International aviation experts told RT that a problem of this kind could doom aircraft of any type. The tragedy that happened to Lion Air’s Boeing 737 MAX is not the first of its kind to involve a faulty “Pitot tube” – a critical air-speed sensor that measures the flow velocity – explained Elmar Giemulla, a leading German expert in air and traffic law.

“This is not unusual in the way it happened before,” he noted, mentioning incidents similar to the Lion Air crash. Back in 1996, a Boeing 757 operated by Turkey’s Birgenair stalled and crashed in the Caribbean because of a blocked pitot tube. Likewise, erroneous air-speed indications, coupled with pilot errors, led to the crash of an Air France Airbus A330 over the Atlantic in 2009.

While the problem is not entirely new, it is unclear how Boeing had tackled it, according to Giemulla. “It is not very unlikely” that Boeing knew about the problem, he said, warning that “more than 200 planes are concerned and this could happen tomorrow again.”

There is so much experience with [using Pitot tubes] that it surprises me very much that this could happen to a newly developed plane.

However, the expert doubted that there has been any cover-up of the issue, instead suggesting that “obviously gross negligence” had been involved.

A 737 MAX 8 servicing Lion Air flight 610 last week ploughed into the waters of the Java Sea shortly after take-off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board. Investigators say there is a possibility that inaccurate readings fed into the MAX’s computer could have sent the plane into a sudden descent.

Meanwhile, David Learmont, an England-based aviation journalist and contributing editor of Flightglobal, suggested that the 737 MAX crash in Indonesia was more about poor maintenance or pilot error than the equipment itself.

He told RT that the ‘angle-of-attack’ sensor and the computerized system it feeds are “helpful but not essential to safe flight.” 

Crews are usually trained to deal with this kind of failure and Boeing “has drawn the airlines’ attention to it,” he explained.

If the pilots had recognized what the problem was, it would have been possible for them to isolate the faulty system and fly the aircraft safely in the traditional way.

Lion Air had already known that a faulty sensor needed replacement “but believed they had fixed it.” Learmont argued that this is not a problem with the aircraft as such but a problem with a sensor system installed on other planes.

“Airbus uses angle-of-attack sensors also, as does Tupolev and other Russian manufacturers,” he said.

If the Portuguese’s prediction is to come true, United must shake off the inconsistency that has so far undermined their efforts this season.

This was a start, particularly as Bournemouth had begun the season so impressively.

Mourinho will know, however, there must be much more to come if they are to revive their challenge for a top four place.

Romelu Lukaku was a surprising absentee, with Mourinho revealing before the game the forward had not travelled to the south coast after picking up an injury the day before.

“In training yesterday, after the press conference, he felt something that needs to be studied in the next couple of days,” Mourinho said.

“So Lukaku has not come and we decided to start with Alexis (Sanchez).”

Lukaku had started on the bench against Everton six days previously so his starting place was far from guaranteed – he has not scored in nine games for his club.

But Mourinho decided not to risk the Belgian with the Champions League trip to Juventus looming.

Sanchez got the nod ahead of Rashford, a starter against Everton, but the Chile international had little chance to shine during the opening stages when Bournemouth could have sealed the points.

The visitors struggled to cope with Bournemouth’s pacy front players and Eddie Howe’s side exploited the lack of organisation in the United backline, forcing the lead in the 11th minute after a period of sustained pressure.

Wilson was denied by David De Gea and Junior Stanislas’s shot deflected wide before United finally cracked after failing to deal with the resulting corner.

Luke Shaw headed clear but Mourinho’s side were guilty of failing to put pressure on the ball, allowing Stanislas to drill in a low cross that was turned home by an unmarked Wilson.

United finally clicked in the 35th minute when Sanchez showed his worth. The former Arsenal forward won the ball in midfield, with the help of his arm, according to the Bournemouth players, and played it wide to Ashley Young before advancing into the box to collect the return and set up Martial for the 35th minute equaliser.

Mourinho’s side were fortunate to be level at half-time but after the restart, they improved the longer the game went on and should have claimed a decisive second goal after Young struck the bar with a free-kick.

The ball fell to Rashford whose close range shot was blocked by Nathan Ake. However, Rashford made amends in the final seconds when he turned in Paul Pogba’s cross from close-range.

Lewis Hamilton extended his lead at the top of the F1 drivers’ championship to 50 points with victory at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi, finishing ahead of teammate Valterri Bottas and title rival Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton beat teammate Bottas – who had started on pole – as the pair’s Mercedes team ordered the Finn to let the British driver pass mid-way through the race to give him a clear run at the lead.

Vettel, Hamilton’s main title rival, came home third as the Ferrari failed to match the pace of the Mercedes.

Under overcast skies at the Sochi Autodrom, the top three on the grid of Bottas, Hamilton and Vettel maintained positions from the start after jostling at the first two turns.

The biggest mover in the opening stages was Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who marked his 21st birthday by marauding up the field from the back of the grid, where he started due to an engine penalty.

The Dutchman moved to the top of the lead as he left his pit stop late, leading the field as the top five frequently shifter positions the teams took pit stops.

The key moments in the context of the title battle came on lap 15 when Hamilton went in to pit after Vettel, then being overtaken by the German as he returned to the track.

Hamilton retook the leap with an impressive pass just two laps later, and despite looking slower than teammate Bottas he was given a clear run to the front when Mercedes bosses ordered the Finn to let the championship leader past.

The Brit then moved into the lead when Verstappen finally pitted on lap 43 of the 53, giving Hamilton a free run to the flag.

The win is Hamilton’s third in Sochi and Mercedes fifth in a row since the Russian Grand Prix was added to the calendar.

The production problems Tesla has faced with its Model 3 have been well documented. Now, sources say the company is facing similar issues with its solar roof tile initiative. According to Reuters, former and current employees have revealed that assembly line problems, plus CEO Elon Musk’s exacting aesthetic demands, has delayed production, causing tension with partner Panasonic, and rattling officials that are keen to see a return on significant state investment.

The “Solar Roof,” produced at Tesla’s factory in Buffalo, New York, is designed to look like and function as a regular roof while also generating energy. According to sources, technical challenges have delayed production, as has Musk’s design plans. Speaking to Reuters, one source said that “Aesthetic look is the key point that Elon is not always satisfied with. That’s the big issue.”

Neither Tesla nor Reuters‘ sources have revealed current production figures for the roof tiles, but the delays are such that Panasonic — which the initiative depends on for solar components — has been forced to find other buyers for the parts it had built to sell to Tesla. According to a former Panasonic employee, the company has been shipping “large volumes” of its photovoltaic cells as samples to other prospective buyers, due to low demand from Tesla. Panasonic declined to comment on the issue, stating only that it “believes Tesla will use Panasonic cells when it mass-markets the Solar roof.”

It’s not clear when that will actually happen. In an investor call last week, Musk said that “hundreds” of homes already had solar roofs, but the company later clarified to Reuters that Musk’s estimate included systems that had been partly installed or scheduled for installation. According to state records, there are just 12 Tesla roof systems in operation in California.

Tesla received massive state support for the project, including $ 350 million to build the factor, $ 275 million for equipment and $ 125 million for additional costs. In return, the company is require to employ 1,460 people in Buffalo and spend $ 5 billion in the state over a decade. Some lawmakers are concerned that the delays jeopardize Tesla’s ability to hold up its end of the deal, however Tesla would face penalties of $ 41.2 million a year if that were to happen. In a statement, Tesla said its facility now employs 600 people, and is “on track to meet all of its commitments.”

Russia’s synchronized swimmers continued their country’s winning run at the European Championships in Glasgow, adding two more gold medals to the team’s tally.

On Tuesday, Aleksandr Maltsev and Maya Gurbanberdieva won the duet free routine mixed final, posting a meet-high score of 92.400 points.

The mixed duet is a relatively new discipline which was introduced at the 2015 FINA World championships in Kazan, Russia.

Also on Tuesday, Svetlana Kolesnichenko and Svetlana Subbotina claimed yet another gold in the duet free program, beating the second-placed Ukrainian couple Anastasiya Savchuk and Yelyzaveta Yakhno by a full three points. Italy’s Linda Cerruti and Costanza Ferro finished third.

On Monday, 18-year-old Russian swimming sensation Kliment Kolesnikov added the 100m backstroke gold to his name, having earlier won the men’s 50m backstroke with a world record time.

Kolesnikov was the fastest swimmer the cross the 100m distance, clocking a time of 52.53 seconds. Silver went to fellow Russian athlete Evgeny Rylov, who was 0.3 seconds behind Kolesnikov.

After four competitive days at the multi-sport European Championships, Russia tops the medal standings with 17 gold medals, which is 10 more than the second-placed Italians, whose athletes have taken seven titles so far.

Great Britain has the same number of golds but trails Italy by overall number of medals.

Living longer may be made possible by drinking a particular type of tea, studies suggest.

Green tea has been earmarked as a life elixir by several leading doctors, including Dr Sarah Brewer and nutritionist Juliette Kellow.

“Tea – particularly green tea – features in the diets of some of the longest-living groups,” they wrote in the new book ‘Eat Better Live Longer’.

“Tea drinking has been linked to protection against cancer and cognitive decline,” they added.

“Plus, it’s rich in fluoride [which can help teeth].”

Green tea, originating in China, could protect against cancer according to some studies.

A 2014 analysis of several studies suggested green tea “could reduce the risk of developing mouth cancers,” according to Cancer Research UK (CRUK).

Others have found it could reduce the risk of lung, oesophagus and bladder cancer among others.

However, CRUK said “more evidence” is needed before it can be proved that green tea prevents cancer.

“At the moment it is impossible to draw any firm conclusions,” they wrote, “different amounts of tea have been taken within studies, there is possible interaction with other treatments and there is a lack of randomised controlled clinical trials.”

Alzheimer’s Research UK, the charity campaigning for more help with dementia, said green tea “may” help prevent the condition.

The charity made the claim while referencing a study published last year in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging on green tea’s effectiveness in 957 over 75s living in Singapore.

“Nature can be a powerful source of compounds with medicinal properties, but it’s too early to conclude that tea drinking is directly linked to better brain health,” said Dr David Reynolds, Chief Scientific Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK.

“Those who regularly drink tea may also partake in other interests and behaviours that influence their risk of memory disorders later in life.

“With one million people in the UK expected to have dementia by 2025, we must continue invest in research to inform approaches to maximise brain health into older age.”

Dr Brewer and nutritionist Kellow also suggested coffee could help extend lifespans.

“Moderate amounts of coffee (four cups a day) may confer some health gains.

“Coffee has beneficial antioxidants and may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

There are several ways to reduce Alzheimer’s risk, the biggest form of dementia, including doing exercise.

Simple gardening or dancing can help the brain, said charity the Alzheimer’s Society.
