  • Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Sergei Skripal, a former double agent poisoned in Britain, had betrayed the motherland. 
  • “He was simply a spy. A traitor to the motherland. He’s simply a scumbag, that’s all,” Putin said, in remarks that drew applause from parts of the audience.
  • Putin also dismissed the allegation that Russia was responsible for the accidental poisoning of Dawn Sturgess, a Salisbury-area woman who British police said died after coming into contact with the nerve agent Novichok.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that a former double agent poisoned in Britain had betrayed the motherland, calling Sergei Skripal a scumbag.

Former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found slumped on a public bench in the English city of Salisbury in March. Britain says they were poisoned with a nerve agent administered by Russian intelligence officers.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia’s foreign ministry said on Friday it was summoning ambassadors from Western countries who had taken “unfriendly” steps over the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy and informing them of Moscow’s retaliatory measures.

The ambassador’s of Germany, France and Italy were seen arriving at the foreign ministry building. RIA news agency reported that the Polish ambassador has also arrived.

He raised a number of questions, including asking what information there is about where the nerve agent came from. There were cries of “shame” from some MPs, unhappy at his decision to question the evidence.

“The attack in Salisbury was an appalling act of violence,” Corbyn said. “Nerve agents are abominable. Our response as a country must be guided by the rule of law, support for international agreements and human rights. It is essential the government works with the UN.”

Corbyn also took aim at Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who was jeering during his response to the prime minister’s statement. He said: “I didn’t understand a word the foreign secretary said but his behavior demeans his office. It is in moments such as these governments realize the importance of strong diplomacy.

“The measures we take have to be effective not just for long-term security but to secure a world free of chemical weapons.”

The government should work with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Corbyn said. He also asked what is being done through the OPCW if the government still believes this material could have been obtained due to Russian government negligence.

“It is a matter of huge regret that diplomatic capacity has been cut,” he said, after the expulsion of Russian diplomats was announced.

His comments came after Theresa May fired warning shots to Russia insisting the country has shown “complete disdain” for Downing Street by refusing to meet a response deadline.

The PM had given the government until yesterday to react to claims it used the nerve agent Novichok to try and murder ex-double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, last week.

May announced a new range of sanctions including the expulsion of 23 diplomats and further checks on Russian private planes entering the UK. This represents the biggest expulsion of what the government has described as “undeclared agents of Russia” in 30 years.

No royal family member or politician will attend the football World Cup in Russia, May told the Commons, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will have his invitation to visit the country withdrawn. May said: “Either this was a direct act by the Russian state against our country or the Russian government lost control of a military-grade nerve agent.

“They have provided no credible explanation. No explanation as to how this came to be used in the UK. The Russian state was culpable for the attempted murder of Mr Skripal and his daughter. This represents unlawful use of force by the Russian state against the UK.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Johnson vowed to respond “robustly” if evidence emerges of Russian involvement in the incident with the former Russian double-agent, who had spied for the UK. He particularly warned that London would be “forced to look again at our sanctions regime and other measures.” Later he added that the UK’s participation in the 2018 World Cup might not “go ahead as normal.”

The Russian embassy in the UK also criticized Johnson, saying his rhetoric “sounded as if the investigation was over that Russia was to blame for what happened in Salisbury.” The embassy noted in a statement that “one gets a steady impression that a scenario for yet another anti-Russian campaign has been already written.”

The incident that has led to another war of words between Moscow and London happened on Sunday, when Russian national Sergei Skripal, 66, and his daughter were found slumped on a bench in Salisbury, England. Reportedly exhibiting symptoms similar to a drug overdose, both were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

It remains unclear what exactly happened, but the British media rushed to compare the incident with the infamous case of the former Russian security officer Alexander Litvinenko, who died from radioactive poisoning in 2006. Litvinenko’s death sparked a major crisis in British-Russian relations, as many public figures in the West accused the Russian government of alleged involvement, while Moscow denied responsibility.

Skripal worked as a double agent for the UK intelligence agency MI6 and was jailed in Russia in 2006 for spying for Britain, having passed on the names of undercover Russian intelligence agents. He was pardoned and released four years later as part of a “spy swap” between the US and Russia.

In the meantime, Russia said it is ready to cooperate with the UK in the investigation of the incident. Moscow is “open” to any such contacts, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that no one, however, has so far approached Moscow with such a request.
