HOT WATER bottles are a cheap and effective way to keep warm during the winter months. But holding one close to skin for long periods of time could lead to a skin condition, and even cancer.![]()
Since the Google+ data exposure came to light earlier this week, European regulatory authorities have announced investigations into the matter and a US Senator has called for an FTC probe. Now, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation has sent the company a letter requesting more information about the incident and Google’s decision to keep it under wraps.
“Data privacy is an issue of great concern for many Americans who use online services. Particularly in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica controversy, consumers’ trust in the companies that operate those services to keep their private data secure has been shaken,” the Senators write. “It is for this reason that the reported contents of Google’s internal memo are so troubling. At the same time that Facebook was learning the important lesson that tech firms must be forthright with the public about privacy issues, Google apparently elected to withhold information about a relevant vulnerability for fear of public scrutiny.”
While Google discovered and fixed a bug in March that allowed outside developers to access around 500,000 Google+ users’ private info, it chose not to disclose the finding. The company’s official line is that because there was no evidence that data was misused and no way to know who was affected, it didn’t find a disclosure necessary. However, an internal memo obtained by the Wall Street Journal noted that revealing the bug could result in “us coming into the spotlight alongside or even instead of Facebook despite having stayed under the radar throughout the Cambridge Analytica scandal.”
The letter, which was signed by committee Chairman John Thune (R-SD) and subcommittee Chairmen Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Jerry Moran (R-KS), asks for a copy of the memo referenced by the Wall Street Journal as well as detailed information on how the company discovered the issue and dealt with it. Additionally, the committee wants to know why Google didn’t disclose the bug, whether it reported the problem to the FTC, if any similar incidents have been found and not reported and if Google will inform the committee in the event that it finds the bug did lead to data misuse.
The committee has requested a response by October 30th as well as a staff briefing on the matter.

]]>THE maelstrom that hit global financial markets a decade ago is known in Japan as the Lehman Shock, after the bankruptcy of the American investment bank that caused it. Japanese banks themselves escaped relatively unscathed, owing to defences built during the 1990s, when the country struggled with deflation and excessive debt. But they seem to have forgotten the lesson. Risk-taking is back.
Squeezed at home by razor-thin margins and negative interest rates, both major and regional banks have been on a spree abroad. Banks have more than doubled borrowing and lending in dollars since 2007. Dollar-denominated assets of Japanese banks topped $ 3.5trn at the end of 2016, according to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel. That leaves them vulnerable to currency swings and external shocks, it warns.

A number of common chemicals can have a knock-on effect with thyroid hormone actions in pregnant women.
This is key in brain development in foetuses and young children, according to a report published in Endocrine Connections.
Rising levels of chemical production has led to “widespread environmental chemical contamination,” according to the review.
The review warned current public health policy “does not fully address the risks to vulnerable populations.”
Professor Barbara Demeneix, Universite Paris-Sorbonne, whose Centre National de la Recherché Scientifique headed up the review, said: “We have reviewed the documented exposures of pregnant women and children to mixtures of thyroid-hormone-disrupting chemicals and propose that the data sets provide a plausible link to the recent increased incidence of neurodevelopment conditions, including autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders.
“Many experts in the field consider that the current testing guidelines for thyroid-disrupting chemicals are not sufficiently sensitive, do not take into account recent findings and do not adequately consider risks to vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women.”
Maternal thyroid hormones are key to help with the normal brain development of children and previous studies have discovered even moderate disruption can hit cognitive development and impacts upon the risk of brain development disorders in children.
A frigid, vast mountainous landscape transitions to a lone para ice hockey player training on an icy pond in an arctic storm. Across the screen, a number of statistics on Canadian hockey participation are displayed, culminating in one final figure.
“0.000053% play hockey on a sledge and become Paralympic champions.”
The para ice hockey player is revealed to be Team Canada captain Greg Westlake.
It’s all quite impressive, and you would be forgiven if initially you had thought the scene came straight from an episode of Game of Thrones. It’s part of a reinvigorated plan to boost the exposure of Canada’s Paralympians competing in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Called “Greatness is Rare,” the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s new marketing campaign shifts the focus directly on the athletes themselves, acknowledging the rarity in participation and gold-medal success rate within the Paralympic sports — all while paying dramatic homage to Canada’s harsh northern landscapes.
But the small percentage of participation in para sports revealed in the commercial is also mirrored in the lack of public awareness and brand recognition for Canada’s Paralympic athletes.
With record-smashing international audience numbers for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, many of Canada’s athletes have struggled making a significant dent in television ratings and marketability.
It’s a trend that Martin Richard, executive director of brand and communications for the Canadian Paralympic Committee, hopes to reverse in Pyeongchang.
“Coming back from the Rio Paralympics, the one thing that didn’t work is that we didn’t increase viewership of coverage of the Paralympic Games, which was obviously something that we wanted to expand on,” said Richard.
“According to our survey, 60 per cent of Canadians want to watch the Paralympics on any type of platform, whether it’s traditional TV or online streaming. That’s a big chunk right there. That’s over 10 million. But our audience viewership rating is quite lower. We’ve got an audience that’s off the couch and active, but we didn’t get them to learn more about our athletes.”
The struggle with athlete exposure in Canada is nothing new.
Just ask Summer Mortimer, a Canadian-Dutch para swimmer who won four Paralympic medals, including two gold, at the 2012 Paralympic Games.
“For a country based in diversity, equality, and acceptance, we are so far behind [other countries] in regards to the Paralympic movement,” said Mortimer.
Mortimer made the dramatic move to compete for the Netherlands in the run-up to 2016, before injuries derailed her attempt at qualifying.
For Mortimer, one of the reasons she made the switch to her mother’s native country was to boost her prospects for increased financial support.
“For such a small country, they are so much more progressive than Canada,” explained Mortimer.
Lack of opportunities in Canada have propelled many Paralympians to take charge of their own marketing and promotion. The common theory is that Canadians are too humble when it comes to promoting one athlete or celebrating their success too much.
Mortimer, who struggled to find sponsorship after her success in London, believes Canadian Paralympic athletes have to fight harder when it comes to marketing themselves for companies.
“In the United States, there’s more of a back story and a celebrity status associated with their athletes. With Canada, no one wants to be ‘too great’. Everyone wants to stay modest and humble because it’s frowned upon”, said Mortimer.
With more coverage of the Paralympics available to Canadians than ever before, might we see a reversal in the brand power and marketability of the athletes?
If Canadian companies are looking to associate their brand with athletes that have diverse and interesting back stories, they need not look further than many of the Paralympians competing in Pyeongchang.
Take a look at Tyler McGregor and Dominic Larocque — teammates on Canada’s para ice hockey team.
MacGregor has overcome cancer to become one of the Canada’s leading scorers the past several years. Larocque lost his leg while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan.
CIBC, which has sponsored the Canadian Paralympic Committee since 2013, has taken the lead in sponsoring disabled athletes in Canada.
Andrew Greenlaw, senior director of sponsorship at CIBC, believes that the Paralympics are a powerful vehicle to shift societal perceptions of disability, stressing that the unique stories are the selling point.
“These athletes are great visual representation,” said Greenlaw. “From a marketing perspective, storytelling is our greatest asset.”
By capturing more of the unique capabilities and back stories of the Paralympians, along with new ways to stream the action on social media platforms, Martin and the Canadian Paralympic Committee are hoping more Canadians will tune in this year.
“We have to demonstrate what ‘rareness’ is,” says Martin
“The one thing they have in common is that they are incredible athletes. The best of the best. To say that you’re the best at something in the world is pretty remarkable.”

Two people have been treated for “suspected exposure to an unknown substance” in the city of Salisbury, England, according to police. One of them is reportedly a former Russian double agent.
Sources close to the investigation told BBC and Reuters that one of those affected was Sergey Skripal, part of a “spy swap” between the US and Russia in 2010. The Russian worked as a double agent for the UK intelligence agency MI6 and was jailed in Russia in 2006 for spying for Britain, having passed on the names of undercover Russian intelligence agents. Russia released four prisoners in exchange for 10 US spies.
Police declared a “major incident” after a man and woman were reported to be in distress at a shopping center in Salisbury, in Wiltshire in southern England on Sunday. They “were taken to Salisbury District Hospital and are being treated for suspected exposure to an unknown substance. They are currently in a critical condition,” Wiltshire Police said in a statement on Monday.
A major incident has been declared & a multi-agency response co-ordinated. Alongside partner agencies, we’re conducting extensive enquiries to determine exactly what led to these people falling unconscious & clarify whether or not any criminal activity has happened. #Salisbury

“At this stage it is not yet clear if a crime has been committed and a multi-agency response has been co-ordinated. Police are carrying out a full investigation and working with partner agencies, to clarify the exact circumstances,” police said, adding that at this stage they don’t believe there is any risk to the wider public.
@SalisburyNHS is currently dealing with a major incident involving a small number of casualties, with a multi-agency response. We are not asking additional staff to come to site unless contacted directly.

A Public Health England (PHE) spokesman said those exposed to the substance have been “decontaminated.” It added that, “scientists from PHE’s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards, will continue to assist the response and review information as it becomes available.”
“This has not been declared as a counter-terrorism incident and we would urge people not to speculate,” Wiltshire Police’s Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Craig Holden told reporters. “However, I must emphasize that we retain an open mind, and that we continue to review this position.”
The Salisbury Journal reported that emergency services suspected fentanyl, a synthetic drug similar to heroin, only far stronger, may have been involved. It isn’t clear whether this indicates the pair had taken the drug or merely been exposed to it; because of fentanyl’s potency, it can even endanger those who come into contact with it, as it can be absorbed through the skin.
An eyewitness told the BBC she saw an older woman and a man sitting on a bench and that they “looked like they’d been taking something quite strong.” She said the woman appeared to be collapsed against the man, who was making strange hand gestures and looking up at the sky. “They looked so out of it that I thought even if I did step in, I wasn’t sure how I could help.”

How do you know your local car dealer’s ad congratulating the wrong team for winning the 2018 Super Bowl somehow wasn’t a major bust? Because the internet exists, that’s why—and, um, you’re reading about the bizarre commercial here.
–
So what happened is this: A Subaru dealer in Muskegon, Michigan, was given the opportunity to purchase 30 seconds of local-station air time during the Big Game at the very last minute. This left the dealer scrambling to put together a spot in time, resulting in a silent clip displaying only the business’s website, the logos of its dealership network and Subaru, and “Congratulations Patriots!” In case you missed it, the Patriots didn’t win the game.
–
–
According to the dealer’s Facebook response to the kerfuffle, the decision to include congratulatory language for only one team was calculated. The Patriots “had the best chance at winning and even if they didn’t win we would be congratulating Patriots on a great season and get some buzz on social media over it.” Why the gamble? After submitting the ad last Friday, the dealer said, it couldn’t be altered.

As anticipated, the shame-vironment otherwise known as Twitter immediately took notice when confused viewers on Sunday began sharing photos of the obviously erroneous spot. Say what you will about there being no such thing as bad press, but we’re curious what a dealer on the western coast of Michigan was doing taking sides at all in a Super Bowl matchup between two teams based hundreds of miles away. No doubt a couple of photos of Subarus conquering the sort of winter weather that afflicts Muskegon wouldn’t have had nearly the same effect. As the dealer noted in its Facebook response to the ad today: “Superbowl [sic] commercials are all about getting attention for your brand and that’s exactly what we wanted to accomplish.” Well played?

On Sunday, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) released a measles alert, warning travelers that an individual with a confirmed case of the measles arrived at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on January 10.
The alert said the passenger, who “was infectious on that day,” arrived on an international flight at Terminal 5 of the airport and departed on a domestic flight from Terminal 1. However, the statement adds that the passenger “may have traveled to other areas of the airport.”
The alert did not specify where the infected passenger was traveling from, what flight they were on, or what other parts of the airport they traveled to.
“People may have been exposed to measles if they were at O’Hare International Airport between 6:30am and 1pm on January 10, 2018,” the statement continues.
However, the statement adds that individuals who were vaccinated as children “are not at high risk.”
“Two doses of measles vaccine are about 97 percent effective in preventing measles,” Dr Jennifer Layden, the chief medical officer for IDPH, said in a statement. “We urge everyone to make sure they and their family members are up-to-date on measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine and all other age-appropriate immunizations. Getting vaccinated not only protects you, it protects others around you who are too young to get the vaccine or can’t receive it for medical reasons.”
The agency said that passengers who have not been vaccinated could start to develop symptoms as late as January 31. However, the agency advised travelers to talk to their healthcare provider before going to the emergency room, so special arrangements could be made to protect other patients and staff from infection.
“Those who were considered most at risk are being contacted directly by health officials,” a spokesperson for the agency told ABC News.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that measles is “a serious, highly contagious disease” that is “easily” spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The disease can also spread through direct contact with an infected person’s nose or throat secretions.
The early symptoms of the disease can include a rash, fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes. Infected individuals develop a high fever anywhere from 10 to 18 days after exposure and a rash that starts on the face or neck about 14 days after exposure.
The disease claims the lives of around 134,200 people each year, mostly children, according to the CDC. The majority of people who get the measles are unvaccinated.
Although the measles was declared eliminated from the US in 2000, there were 86 Americans reported to have the disease in 2016.
The CDC states that most measles cases in the US result from international travel, and warned travelers to make sure they are protected against the disease before they go abroad.
“The disease is brought into the United States by unvaccinated people who get infected in other countries. They spread measles to others, which can cause outbreaks,” the CDC states
This is the second case of measles in a US airport this year. On Friday, the New Jersey Department of Health also issued a measles alert after a female student arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport from Mumbai, India, with a confirmed case of measles.
That alert was issued 10 days after the student had been at the airport. She was diagnosed and went into “self-isolation” on Wednesday, according to Indiana University.
