Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Russia wants to use Syrian ports to ship grain to Syria and neighboring countries.

“Syrian ports are ideal for exports of Russian wheat not only to Syria, but via Syria to Iraq and other nearby countries. That’s beneficial for us,” Rogozin said as quoted by RIA Novosti.

The Deputy PM added that Russia harvested another record wheat crop this year, highlighting the necessity to export the grain.

Russia and Syria are also planning to jointly create a phosphates deposit developer, according to Rogozin.

“There’s a big phosphate deposit in Syria. In many countries this product is in high demand,” he said in a follow up to his visit to the country.

Rogozin also said the sides agreed to develop the deposit and export processed phosphate to other countries. All the profits from the enterprise will be divided between Syrian and Russian companies.

Last year, Syria offered Russia the rights to explore and develop land and offshore oil and gas deposits. In particular, Russia was invited to upgrade the Baniyas refinery and construct a refinery with Iran and Venezuela.

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of a significant part of Russian military from Syria, after a successful campaign against Islamic State terrorists (IS, formerly ISIS).

Namibia’s Strange Cold War Export to East Germany https://briefnews.eu/namibias-strange-cold-war-export-to-east-germany/ https://briefnews.eu/namibias-strange-cold-war-export-to-east-germany/#respond Mon, 11 Dec 2017 08:49:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/namibias-strange-cold-war-export-to-east-germany/ Little Lucia Engombe didn’t notice the cold when she arrived in the German Democratic Republic on a wintry night in 1979 because she was wrapped warmly and carried into the airport. But the 7-year-old Namibian refugee was immediately struck by how bright everything was. “In Africa, it was dark at night,” she says. “I had never seen a street lamp.”

Engombe, who has written a moving book about her experiences titled Child No. 95, is one of about 430 Namibians who grew up in the GDR before being sent “home” when Namibia achieved independence in 1990. The “ex-GDR kids” — their term — were part of a wider socialist collaboration that saw Namibian youths being educated in Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Sri Lanka, Cuba and even North Korea.

Little did she know that the 80 other children and their Namibian minders would be her entire world for the next 11 years.

To understand how the children became Cold War pawns, one has to go back a little. In 1914, when World War I broke out, the British colony of South Africa invaded the German colony of South West Africa (now Namibia). “With a much larger force than the Germans,” writes Marion Wallace in A History of Namibia: From the Beginning to 1990, and better transport and equipment, South African troops overwhelmed their opponents, taking Windhoek in May 1915.

In the aftermath of the war, South Africa was given a League of Nations mandate to take South West Africa under its wing. By 1946, Wallace writes, South Africa had “repudiated its ‘sacred trust’ … and began to incorporate the territory ever more closely into its own structures of government.” In the early ’60s, as Britain was granting independence to neighboring Botswana and Zambia, SWA was subjected to the ever-tightening fist of apartheid. Anti–South African sentiment flourished in Namibia (as locals already called it), and in 1966 the South West Africa People’s Organization’s military wing launched the first attacks on South African forces.

Engombe’s family fled the country in 1974 when police pressure on her schoolteacher father, Immanuel, became unbearable (he was known for “driving SWAPO people around in his yellow Ford,” says Lucia). After a stint in Angola, the Engombes eventually arrived in 1976 at the Nyango refugee camp in western Zambia. Immanuel was soon detained there by SWAPO for exposing embezzlement in the organization; Engombe’s mother also spent a lot of time away.

Effectively orphaned, the Engombe children battled daily hunger and physical abuse. When a white doctor at the infirmary asked Engombe if she would like to fly to Germany, she jumped at the idea: “I didn’t know what it meant,” she says. “It was just an exciting adventure.” Little did she know that the 80 other children and the Namibian minders who accompanied the group would be her entire world for the next 11 years. Or that their home for the first six years would be, of all places, an opulent German schloss (castle) near the village of Bellin. There, Engombe would encounter her first toilet (a German governess had to demo its use), her first apple and her first real bed.

At Bellin, Engombe forgot what it was to be hungry, and she and the other children developed a language they called Oshi-Deutsch — a combination of Oshiwambo (or Ovambo, a dialect spoken in Angola and northern Namibia) and German, which was made possible because the children picked up German much more quickly than their Namibian minders, and the German governesses spoke no Oshiwambo. “Later on we used it to plan secret discos,” she says with a laugh.

Bellin173 dsc0153

In those early years, the children’s movements were heavily restricted, but as they grew older their minders decided that the isolated existence was “kind of inhuman,” as Engombe puts it. In 1985, the older children were moved to Staßfurt to attend the School of Friendship, a pioneering institution developed in 1982 to educate pupils from Mozambique, another socialist ally of the GDR.

In Staßfurt, the children were encouraged to become part of the community, and some — Engombe included — had German boyfriends and girlfriends. “In the end I had to break up with him to maintain my friendships with the Namibian boys in my group,” she remembers wistfully. “I had no choice.” The education program suffered a similar fate: In 1989, as the Berlin Wall fell, and Namibian independence beckoned, the School of Friendship was disbanded, and the children were returned to Africa, leaving Engombe one year shy of high school graduation.

“In my mind I loved my country,” recalls Engombe, but it didn’t make her homecoming any easier. She remembers being shocked by Namibia’s dry climate (“We were used to green stuff”), the boring food (“Namibians eat pap three times a day”) and how much tougher life was (“Some of my friends had to carry water from a well just to have a bath”). But the gravest hardships were emotional. There were no support systems for the children, and even their own families laughed at their language and customs. “An old man once called me a whore,” says Engombe, “just because I was wearing shorts.”

Engombe says she flirted with suicide but credits her relationships with other GDR kids (“They are my family”) and finding God for getting her through the tough passages. While a few of her contemporaries have fallen on hard times, many of the ex-GDR kids are now making a positive contribution to Namibian society. Engombe manages the country’s German-language radio station, while others have gone on to become lawyers, airline pilots and entrepreneurs.

In spite of their eventual success, Engombe would not wish her experiences on anyone. As she says, “It was not a sugar life.”

Chinese trade data misses and export and import growth slows https://briefnews.eu/chinese-trade-data-misses-and-export-and-import-growth-slows/ https://briefnews.eu/chinese-trade-data-misses-and-export-and-import-growth-slows/#respond Tue, 08 Aug 2017 06:49:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chinese-trade-data-misses-and-export-and-import-growth-slows/ Chinese trade data produced a rare miss in July with annual growth in exports and imports both undershooting expectations.

According to China’s General Administration of Customs, exports grew by 7.2% year-on-year in US dollar denominated terms, missing forecasts for an increase of 10.9%.

That was also below the 11.3% increase previously reported in June.

On the other side of the ledger, imports rose by 11% from a year earlier in USD-terms, again undershooting forecasts for growth of 16.6%.

They previously grew by 17.2% year-on-year in June.

In volume terms, imports of crude oil, iron ore and coal all fell from the levels reported in June.

Crude oil imports stood at 34.66 million tonnes, down from 36.11 million tonnes a month earlier, while imports of iron ore slipped to 85.74 million tonnes from 94.7 million tonnes in June.

Coal imports also dipped to 19.46 million tonnes, a four-month low.

In the first seven months of the year, imports of crude, iron ore and coal grew by 13.6%, 7.5% and 18.2% respectively from the same period a year earlier.

In the 12 months to July this year, the Chinese yuan weakened by 1.4% against the US dollar, suggesting that the growth in exports and imports was largely driven by strengthening demand both from within China and abroad, rather than movements in currency markets.

In yuan-denominated terms, Customs said exports grew by 11.2% year-on-year. Import growth was even stronger, lifting 14.7% over the same period.

The wash-up from the movements in exports and imports was that the national trade surplus swelled to $ 46.74 billion, above the $ 42.77 billion level of June and forecasts for a smaller increase to $ 46.08 billion.

China’s trade surplus with the United States stood at $ 25.2 billion, down marginally on the $ 25.4 billion level of June.

There has been no significant reaction in stocks, commodity futures, bonds or currencies in Asia to the release of the trade report.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on Saturday on a U.S.-drafted resolution that aims to slash by a third North Korea’s $ 3 billion annual export revenue over Pyongyang’s two intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests in July.

A council diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was a “high confidence” that North Korea ally China and Russia would support the draft resolution, which was circulated to the 15 Security Council members on Friday.

The council is due to vote at 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT). A resolution needs nine votes in favor, and no vetoes by the United States, China, Russia, France or Britain, to be adopted.

The draft resolution would ban North Korea’s exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood. It would also prohibit countries from increasing the current numbers of North Korean laborers working abroad, ban new joint ventures with North Korea and any new investment in current joint ventures.

“These are export sectors where this money is viewed as a critical, critical source of hard currency that the North immediately turns around into its fantastically expensive war machine and these just amazingly expensive ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs,” the diplomat said.

“These sanctions are not targeted at the people of North Korea,” the diplomat said.

US pressure on China

The draft resolution would also add nine individuals and four entities to the U.N. blacklist, including North Korea’s primary foreign exchange bank, subjecting them to a global asset freeze and travel ban.

The United States and China have been negotiating the draft text for the past month. Typically, they agree sanctions on North Korea before formally involving other council members.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has been frustrated that China has not done more to rein in North Korea and Washington has threatened to impose new sanctions on Chinese firms doing business with Pyongyang.

“The Trump administration should issue new sanctions against China at the same time the new resolution is adopted as Beijing is still violating U.S. law by allowing its companies, individuals, and banks to facilitate North Korea’s sanctions evasion,” said Anthony Ruggiero, a Foundation for Defense of Democracies senior fellow and former U.S. Treasury official.

China has also been upset by possible moves by the Trump administration to exert trade pressure on Beijing.

“(The draft) appears to reflect a compromise between the U.S. and China in several areas,” Bonnie Glaser, senior adviser for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said. “It notably does not include any reduction in Chinese crude oil shipments to North Korea.”

While supportive of new U.N. action, Security Council member Sweden said sanctions alone could not solve the problem.

“More creative diplomacy is urgently needed. A long-term solution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiations,” said Sweden’s Deputy U.N. Ambassador Carl Skau.

US vs Russia

The United States had been informally keeping Britain and France in the loop on the bilateral negotiations, while U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said China had been sharing the draft and negotiating with Russia.

It has not been clear if poor relations between Russia and the United States, which imposed new unilateral sanctions on Moscow on Wednesday, would hamper negotiations.

Moscow has disagreed with assessments by Western powers that Pyongyang launched two long-range missiles, saying they were mid-range. Diplomats say China and Russia only view a test of a long-range missile or a nuclear weapon as a trigger for further possible U.N. sanctions.

North Korea has been under U.N. sanctions since 2006 over its ballistic missile and nuclear programs and the Security Council has ratcheted up the measures in response to five nuclear weapons tests and two long-range missile launches.

The U.N. diplomat said North Korea has been estimated to earn in 2017 $ 400 million from coal, $ 251 million from iron and iron ore, $ 113 million from lead and lead ore and $ 295 million from seafood. The diplomat said it was difficult to estimate how much North Korea was earning from sending workers abroad.

A United Nations human rights investigator said in 2015 that North Korea has forced more than 50,000 people to work abroad, mainly in Russia and China, earning the country between $ 1.2 billion and $ 2.3 billion a year for the government.

The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port plans to start exporting crude by early next year, in the latest indication there’s an oil export boom in the world’s top oil consumer. According to media reports citing an emailed LOOP statement, the private company operating the port is currently looking for potential producers interested in shipping their crude from LOOP.

LOOP is certainly not the only port eyeing exports as shale output continues to grow. Yet it is the deepest one: it is the only port on the U.S. Gulf Coast capable of handling Very Large Crude Carriers, or VLCCs, which have a capacity of up to 2 million barrels of crude.

As we noted earlier, the Gulf Coast is bustling with port-expansion activity as producers rush to send their crude overseas. Until relatively recently, the Port of Houston was where all the oil action in Texas took place. Now, things are changing, with energy companies expanding along the state’s coast, shunning the busy—and more expensive—big port.

Energy independents such as Cheniere, Occidental Petroleum, and refiner Phillips 66 are building capacity along the Texas coast, and Occidental even tested a VLCC at its Corpus Christi facility earlier this year. Yet on the whole, the usual way to load VLCCs in the Gulf is to first load the crude on smaller vessels and then transfer it to the supertanker in deeper waters.

This is where LOOP’s main advantage over the other ports lies: there is no need for the transfer, which increases costs and potentially, the risk of a spill. This is an important advantage as U.S. crude is not terribly competitive with lower-cost producers such as those in the Middle East.

“LOOP is the most obvious place for U.S. crude exports since as a deepwater port it makes it more manageable to load up a large ship such as a VLCC,” the head of commodities and energy research at Morningstar, Sandy Fielden, told Bloomberg. “It makes huge sense from a logistical perspective as it will allow for more efficient cargo shipments.”

According to McQuilling Services, as quoted by Bloomberg, demand for VLCC ton-miles for the Far East this year will shoot up 52 times. The Far East is one of the most natural destinations for U.S. crude, so chances are that producers will waste no time to take advantage of the LOOP export capacity, which according to analysts, could boost America’s total daily export rates by 300,000 barrels.

This year, the U.S. has been exporting an average daily of 758,000 barrels through June 14, according to the EIA, with exports hitting a record-high of 1.303 million bpd for one week in late May. By 2020, PIRA Energy forecasts, exports could reach 2.25 million bpd, which is more than what Kuwait and Nigeria, separately, ship overseas. To compare, last year the average daily rate of U.S. oil exports was 520,000 barrels, according to EIA data.

At such rates of growth, LOOP is doing the only sensible thing: using the advantages it already has to benefit from the export rush. For now, its only competitor is the Corpus Christi facility of Occidental.

After 40yr oil export ban, US looks to top global market – report https://briefnews.eu/after-40yr-oil-export-ban-us-looks-to-top-global-market-report/ https://briefnews.eu/after-40yr-oil-export-ban-us-looks-to-top-global-market-report/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 02:05:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/after-40yr-oil-export-ban-us-looks-to-top-global-market-report/ The US may transform into one of the world’s top oil exporters in only a few short years due to its production increase of shale oil, an energy consulting group says.

The consultancy PIRA energy group has released a new forecast relating to the current boom of US shale oil production. The group has estimated that by 2020, US crude exports will rise to 2.25 million barrels a day. This means the production would grow to four times the amount of what was produced last year. The recent uptick of crude production in the US looks to weaken the strength of OPEC exporting countries, according to CNN Money.

This boom would put the US almost on the same level as giant oil exporters such as Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Jenna Delaney, an analyst at PIRA, said that “in the years ahead, these developments position the US to potentially be one of the largest exporters of crude oil in the world,” CNN reported.

Various American cities may play a big role in the success of the US export market. One city in Texas was named specifically. Delaney commented that “PIRA believes Corpus Christi is positioned to become an increasingly prominent area for US exports.”

She continued, “Corpus Christi’s proximity to the Eagle Ford formation and projected pipeline expansions connecting it to the Permian offer it access to cheap supplies, infrastructure projects, both private and public, will allow for greater export scale,”according to the Oil and Gas Journal.

There are rival countries keeping an eye on the situation in the US. OPEC, which encompasses 14 countries, was exporting an average of 25 million barrels a day in 2016. These countries stand to lose a lot due to the rise of American oil crude exports.

The US will look to rise in the ranks and start to diminish the influence of the organization in the next few years. Saudi Arabia, a top ranking member, was a top exporter last year. They sent 7.5 million barrels into other countries last year, according to CNN.

The uptick in US production of crude oil is very surprising considering the country had banned the exports way back in 1975 and only lifted the ban in 2015, according to the Economist.

An increase in the production of shale is the main reason for the surge, Delaney said. In 2014, “the industry was hit hard by a collapse in oil prices. Major producers of oil were forced to reduce investment and production declined overall,” CNN reported.

After the collapse, operators started to be more efficient in the industry. The production of US crude began to slowly grow to reach 9 million barrels a day in February 2017, the US Energy Information Administration reported, according to CNN.

As the US is supposed to ascend to the top of the ranks in crude exports, allegations have arisen that Russia is working with environmentalists in America in order to undermine the shale oil industry.

Representative Lamar Smith, (R-Texas), along with Randy Weber (R-Texas), have sent a letter, dated June 29, to US Treasury Secretary Steven Munchin, alleging that Russia is funding environmentalist groups who spoke out against health concerns related to shale drilling, in order to protect the independence of Russian gas imports. However, the letter states that there is “no paper trail” leading to any strategy set forth by Russia, The Daily Signal reported.

AWS QuickSight now lets you export data in CSV format https://briefnews.eu/aws-quicksight-now-lets-you-export-data-in-csv-format/ https://briefnews.eu/aws-quicksight-now-lets-you-export-data-in-csv-format/#respond Sun, 02 Apr 2017 06:08:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/aws-quicksight-now-lets-you-export-data-in-csv-format/

Public cloud infrastructure provider Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced a small but helpful update to Amazon QuickSight, its web-based business intelligence (BI) tool for visualizing data. Now it’s possible to export data from a visualization into a .CSV file, which people can use in other software, including spreadsheet apps like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.

Now when you’re inside a visualization of data in QuickSight and you’re interested in the underlying data, you can export to CSV by clicking on the down arrow in the top right corner of the visualization box and then clicking “Export to CSV.” The file that should download through your browser will include data fields as well as the data that you’ve filtered. You can export views again and again as you slice and dice your data.

CSV, which stands for comma-separated values, is a common data format that dates the 1970s and that isn’t tied to any one piece of software, unlike, say, Adobe’s .psd format and Microsoft’s .wma format. Now Amazon is embracing it in QuickSight, AWS announced today in a tweet.

Popular BI tools like Qlik and Tableau let people export certain data in CSV format. Microsoft’s Power BI app does, too.

AWS launched QuickSight in 2015 and brought it out of preview in November. Customers include Edmunds.com, Hotelbeds, Infor, and MLB Advanced Media.
