The US attorney general and DEA announced Monday that Tony Hernandez has been charged with “conspiring to import cocaine”, possession of “machineguns and explosive devices” as well as lying to federal agents. He appeared in a Miami court after being arrested on November 23rd, and if found guilty is potentially facing life in prison.
Hernandez has a rap sheet that would make Tony Montana proud, using “machinegun toting security” to protect “multi-ton” cocaine shipments, bribing law enforcement in order to secure crucial information for facilitating narcotics shipments and soliciting bribes from large-scale drug dealers, according to the DoJ. Investigators even found packages of cocaine in drug laboratories in Mexico and Colombia that were hubristically stamped with the former lawmaker’s initials “TH”.
The indictment represents official US recognition that massive drug trafficking rings were presumably sanctioned at the highest levels of the Honduran government, including bribes paid to members of the National Congress of Honduras for protection and safe passage. The drugs were smuggled for over a decade, from 2004-2016, by air and by sea, allegedly pushed up through Guatemala and eventually into the United States. In a move the writers of Breaking Bad would probably call far-fetched, the DoJ’s public statement even says that “on at least one occasion” Hernandez used a submarine to transport the goods.
The statement also says that a recording exists of Hernandez giving a $ 50,000 kickback to a former member of the Honduran National Police to help force “Honduran government entities” to make payments to companies that launder money for a violent drug-trafficking gangs, which essentially amounts to Honduras having state subsidized drug-money laundering services.
Tony’s brother, the president of Honduras, who has ironically been trying to crack down on drug cartels, said that while being entitled to the presumption of innocence “no one is above the law.” So despite being the brother of the head of state, he will be given no advantages that an ordinary citizen would not have during a trial, Juan Orlando Hernandez stated.

The home of the republican Bobby Storey, who previously served as the party’s chairman in Northern Ireland, was also targeted.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed on Friday night that they were dealing with “two incidents at two separate addresses in West Belfast.”
A further search of both locations saw remnants of “industrial, firework-type devices” seized by police, and “a parked car was damaged at one of the houses”, according to a PSNI statement.
Sinn Fein’s Policing and Justice Spokesman Gerry Kelly condemned the “reprehensible and cowardly attacks.”
“Grandchildren were in the driveway of Adams’ home minutes before the attack,” he said.
Appealing for calm, Kelly described the attacks as “the desperate acts of increasingly desperate and irrelevant groups.”
Adams, a prolific social-media user who led Sinn Fein from 1983 until his retirement last February, tweeted in the early hours of Saturday morning that no one had been hurt during the attack, thanking neighbors and Sinn Fein members for their quick response.
All well here. No one hurt. Thanks 4 all the texts & phone calls. Thanks 2 all the great neighbours, the Neighbourhood Watch & Sinn Féin reps who were here very quickly.

The attacks were also condemned by other political parties in Northern Ireland, with Alliance Party leader Naomi Long calling for unity in the wake of the incident.
“We need to stand together against all violence. No exceptions. No excuses,” she said. “It seems this week some people are determined to drag us back into violence at whatever cost.”
"These latest attacks on the homes of Gerry Adams and Bobby Storey are a deliberate and calculated attempt to cause fear and raise tensions within our community. They must be condemned without equivocation by us all." pic.twitter.com/EYCoRLufeJ

Those sentiments were echoed in the Republic of Ireland, where Taoiseach Leo Varadkar denounced the Belfast attacks, as well as the wider violence across Northern Ireland.
“We stand with the decent law-abiding people from all communities in the North,” he said. “We will not allow a small minority intent on violence to drag Northern Ireland back to the past.”
I unequivocally condemn the violence in Derry and Belfast last night. We will not allow a small minority intent on violence to drag Northern Ireland back to the past. We stand with the decent law-abiding people from all communities in the North.

The west Belfast incidents come after six days of violence in Derry’s republican Bogside neighborhood, which the PSNI have attributed to dissident republican elements from the ‘New IRA.’
The unrest coincides with the loyalist marching season, which sees loyalists and unionists parading through nationalist areas.
Stating that the rioters in the Bogside had tried to murder them on Thursday night, police arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after officers were attacked with 74 petrol bombs and two improvised explosives.
The previous night saw numerous vehicles hijacked and burned in Belfast, while a bus was hijacked by masked men and set on fire in county Down.

(Reuters) – A Houston-area woman has been charged with mailing booby-trapped packages designed to explode to former U.S. President Barack Obama, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and a federal office in Maryland.
Julia Poff, 46, was ordered held in jail last week ahead of trial after she was indicted on charges of mailing packages last year that were designed to kill, transporting explosives and other criminal counts, court documents showed.
“Poff presents a real safety risk to witnesses and others in the community,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacy wrote in a five-page order outlining the case.
Poff, who was charged earlier this month and pleaded not guilty last week, reached out to the Houston Chronicle to defend herself, the newspaper reported on its website on Thursday.
Poff told the Chronicle that investigators had taken trash from her home. The trash was “used in some serious crimes that we did not commit and know nothing about,” she was quoted as saying.
It was not clear whom Poff was referring to as “we.”
An explosive-laden package mailed to Obama in October 2016, while he was still in office, contained hair that an FBI crime lab matched to one of Poff’s cats, the judge wrote in the detention order.
Poff is said to have expressed dislike for Obama, who is a Democrat, according to the order. Packages sent to Obama and the U.S. Social Security Administration in Maryland were both stopped in screening, according to Houston TV station KPRC.
In October 2016, Abbott, the Republican governor of Texas, opened a third package that also was rigged to explode, but it failed to detonate.
The judge’s detention order said Poff was upset with Abbott because she believed that in his previous role as state attorney general, he played a part in her inability to receive support from her ex-husband.
It was unclear what type of support Poff might have sought. The state attorney general’s office has a division that handles requests for child support after a divorce or separation.
The packages sent to Obama, the Social Security Administration and Abbott contained pyrotechnic powder, and investigators found a large amount of fireworks at Poff’s home in Brookshire, west of Houston, the court order said.
Poff is represented by a public defender, who could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
She is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on Jan. 2.

The Ukrainian police force has reported finding a cache of assault rifles, ammo and explosives in the capital Kiev. Security officials say the weapons could have been used during Tuesday’s mass protest in the city center.
The weapons were discovered during an ongoing investigation, according to a statement from the deputy head of Ukraine’s national police, Vyacheslav Abroskin.
Footage of the bust, uploaded to the police’s YouTube channel, shows an AK-47 assault rifle, several bags of ammunition and disassembled hand grenades stashed away in a garage.
“The searches continue,” Abroskin said, touting efforts by the Ukrainian police and national security service (SBU) to prevent “actions aimed at destabilizing the situation in the country.”
The weapons could be intended for use during Tuesday’s protests in central Kiev, according to SBU deputy head Viktor Kononenko.
During the original Maidan protests in 2014, numerous firearms found their way to the hands of militant rioters, many of them members of far-right groups such as the Svoboda (Freedom) party. Some of the same political forces were seen in central Kiev on Tuesday, again protesting the policies of the current Ukrainian authorities, which the 2014 coup brought to power.
Tuesday’s protest was called by Mikhail Saakashvili, the former president of Georgia and ex-governor of Ukraine’s Odessa region and also former friend of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko – until Saakashvili started calling him out on corruption and demanding that his “gang” be ousted from power. Poroshenko stripped Saakashvili of his Ukrainian citizenship in July.
The rally, attended by some 6,000 people, called for parliamentary immunity to be revoked and for reforms to the electoral system. Protesters put up tents, set up cordons and faced off with riot police.

PARIS (Reuters) – France’s interior minister said on Tuesday police had arrested a number of people after the discovery of an explosive device outside a residential building in Paris last weekend.
One of those arrested was “radicalized”, he said, a likely reference to Islamist militancy.
Minister Gerard Collomb, speaking on public radio station France Inter, said the discovery of the device in the affluent 16th district of western Paris highlighted that France was as much as ever at risk of terrorist attacks.
“(Police) services are investigating,” Collomb said. “What I can tell you is that among the people who were arrested, one was … radicalized”
More than 230 people have been killed in attacks by Islamist militants over the past three years. The Islamic State militant group whose bases in Syria and Iraq are being bombed by French war planes has urged followers to attack France.
Soldiers shot a knifeman dead on Sunday after he killed two young women at a train station in the southern French port city of Marseille.
A judicial source said the explosive device found late last Friday night was made of four gas cannisters.
“We’ve foiled numerous attacks since the start of the year that would have involved many deaths,” Collomb said. “We are still in a state of war.”

Tejo got its start hundreds of years ago in the town of Turmequé, in Colombia’s Boyacá Department. Back then, the sport was populated by the indigenous Muisca people. The Muisca didn’t have a written language, but oral history suggests tejo was first played during the market town’s raucous festivities. It endured through the years, earning a hallowed spot in Colombia’s cultural heritage as well as a prominent place in the country’s sporting landscape.
Tejo is horseshoes with booze; bocce with explosives.
The fundamentals are simple. Teams stand about 20 meters from a target composed of a box filled with clay. Nestled in the clay is a ring, and the goal is to lob a metal disc (the tejo) into the ring’s center, or as close to the ring as possible. So long as the tejosticks in the clay, you stand a shot at getting a point; if it bounces out, it’s a big fat zilch. There’s a catch — packets filled with gunpowder are strategically placed in the box. Hit one, and the resulting explosion signals an automatic three points for your team. A hit is usually enough to swing victory. Basically, tejo is horseshoes with booze; bocce with explosives. But it’s the communal act of the game that makes it so enjoyable.

For a long time, tejo was a male-dominated activity associated mostly with farmers and the lower classes. But in the middle of the 20th century, politicians got into it as a way to relate to, or to pander to, the people they governed. The sport’s popularity spread, and eventually all social classes were enjoying it. In the 21st century, tejo continued to break gender and class barriers, and these days women of all ages compete in local tournaments across the country.

“I always tell visitors that playing tejois the most Colombian thing you can do in Colombia,” says Shaun Clausey, owner of Macondo Hostel in San Gil. Clausey has been running tejo games for his guests every week for the past eight years — it’s his only guaranteed crowd-pleaser of an outing. But it isn’t just about the sport, he says: “It’s about the music and interacting with locals.” Clausey believes that tejo’s appeal stretches beyond borders because it’s similar to other popular global sports like bowling, bocce and curling, but, as he puts it, “Colombia added gunpowder and made it exciting.”
“The 70-cent beers are a big attraction too,” he adds.
Rich heritage aside, our group, down on points and buzzed on beer, wasn’t holding out hope for a miracle. Petros, the Greek playboy who’d deputized himself our unofficial captain — his alpha-male posturing suggested he was a clutch player, the one to put points on the board — had become too distracted by Spanish teammate Maria. I wasn’t exactly representing the U.S. like an Olympian, notching just one of our seven points — an effort that even the most polite of Colombians would regard as uninspiring. Luckily it was the quiet Finn who turned the tide: On the last throw, Antti channeled his inner Viking berserker, landing the tejo flush on the center packet. There was a spark and an explosion. Electricity filled the air as everyone focused on the sound. Then, a deafening cacophony of cheers and applause while beer bottles clinked in toast. We’d won.

Tejo may be firmly stitched into Colombia’s cultural fabric, but could it take off in the U.S.? Who knows? But if someone started a sport that combined throwing things, beer drinking and the Fourth of July, would you buy stock in it? I sure as hell would.

Around 100 investigators from the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) are looking into the incident, one of whom spoke to the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Saturday.
“The explosives in the pipe bombs, which were filled with metal pins, might have come from the stocks of the Bundeswehr [German armed forces], but that’s still being checked,” the newspaper quoted the anonymous investigator as saying.
The source added that specialized training was needed to use the military detonators, which are hard to acquire.
A spokeswoman for the federal public prosecutor’s office declined to comment on the newspaper’s claims.
Three explosive devices went off near Dortmund’s team bus as it was transporting players to their match with Monaco on Tuesday evening, causing defender Marc Bartra to require surgery to his arm and wrist.
Although an Iraqi man, who is a suspected member of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), was arrested in connection with the blast on Thursday, authorities say there is no evidence to suggest that he was directly involved. A letter claiming responsibility was found at the scene of the crime ostensibly linking it to IS, but for the militant group to claim responsibility in this way is highly unusual. The letter also gave no religious justification for the attack, and an investigator told Bild newspaper that far-right extremists may actually be responsible.
According to Welt, police believe more attacks targeting high-profile venues and events, such as football matches or pop concerts, could be possible, so surveillance and security at these vulnerable spots should be stepped-up. A corresponding letter has been sent to regional police headquarters.
“In Bavaria, we are planning more intensive video surveillance especially of crime hotspots and public places,” Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told the Welt.
“Additionally, the video surveillance strengthens the population’s sense of security and can act as a deterrent to potential perpetrators,” he said.
Germany’s security services have been on high alert since December of 2016, when a truck driver drove into a Christmas market in central Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring 56. Germany also saw a wave of smaller terror attacks last summer. In July, a rejected asylum seeker blew himself up outside a wine bar near a music festival in the German town of Ansbach. That explosion injured 15 people.
The same month, a 17-year-old Afghan refugee attacked passengers on a train in Wuerzburg, wounding five people. The attacker was shot dead by police, who later found a handprinted Islamic State flag in his room.

A “bag of explosives” was reportedly uncovered in the wreckage of the truck used in the Stockholm attack which killed four. Police officials could not immediately confirm the reports by local media.
A police bomb squad was spotted at the site of the attack, according to an Aftonbladet reporter. The area within a 200 meter radius was reportedly cordoned off. It remains unclear whether the uncovered “bag of explosives” is a blast-ready improvised explosive device.
The device did not go off, but the suspect received burns from it, SVT reports.
The head of the Swedish Security Police told Swedish TV4 that he could not immediately confirm the media reports.
A suspect was detained late Friday in a Stockholm suburb and subsequently arrested, according to Swedish police. The suspect is believed to be the driver of the truck, Reuters reports, citing police spokesman Lars Bystrom.
Several other people were questioned after the deadly incident, as police believe that there might be other people associated with the suspect.
Police raided several locations in Stockholm during the night after the incident.
“The mission has been going on in several different locations with different measures that cannot be described in detail at present,” The Local Sweden quoted police spokesperson Towe Hägg as saying.
The attack took place in Drottninggatan, one of the city’s main pedestrian areas, killing four and leaving 15 injured. The truck smashed through crowds of people before crashing into a department store. Swedish PM Stefan Lofven said the attack appeared to be an act of terrorism.
While the area around the attack scene remains cordoned off, people are bringing flowers and candles to the police barricades, commemorating the victims of the truck rampage.
Top officials and members of Sweden’s Royal family visited the scene of the attack to pay tribute to the victims.
“This is an attack on society, on Stockholm and on the Stockholmers,” Stockholm Mayor Karin Wanngård said at the scene, The Local Sweden reports.
Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and Crown Prince Daniel visited Sergels torg square on Saturday morning. The attack has left a feeling of a “tremendous sadness and emptiness,” the crown princess told local media.
The 18-story tall Bonn-Center building in Germany was brought crashing down by 250 kilos of explosives.
The landmark building, that has towered over the city of Bonn for nearly 50 years, was demolished in seconds on Sunday as residents looked on at it’s spectacular implosion.
The rumbles from crumbling concrete could be felt by cheering members of the public hundreds of meters away. Many considered the 60-meter (197 feet) high-rise an eyesore and were delighted to witness its demise.
More than 150 officials from the fire brigade, police, technical aid organization and the city ordinance were reportedly on duty to ensure the building’s safe demolition.
Construction of a new and improved Bonn-Center buidlinis scheduled to start in 2018 with a modern city center expected to open in 2020.
An iconic 37 year-old, 55,000 ton archive building in Atlanta, Georgia, known locally as the “white ice cube,” was flattened on Sunday with ruthless efficiency… and it was all captured on camera.
Some 500 pounds (226 kilograms) of explosives were detonated to bring down the Hammond Exchange Building in a controlled implosion triggered by Devin Simmons, a 5-year-old patient from the local Children’s Health Care of Atlanta facility, according to WSBTV.
In the late 1990s, engineers determined that the cost of refurbishing the building, which had sustained structural damage due to groundwater and the construction of a nearby freeway, would be prohibitively expensive when compared to the cost of simply moving the archives.
The building was officially vacated in 2016.
So effective was the demolition that the building fell to the ground at an aesthetically pleasing 45 degree angle.
Its unique silhouette had marked the skyline for decades and its absence was soon noticed once the dust had settled.
Though roads and bridges in the immediate vicinity were closed as a precaution, the demolition went smoothly and without incident.
The site is due to be redeveloped as a new judicial center that will house the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Georgia Supreme Court reports NBC.
