After publicly locking horns over the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry interview on Twitter, Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan welcomed Alex Beresford onto the ITV show today to discuss. However, when arguing about the allegations of “concern” over son Archie’s skin colour which were raised during the chat with Oprah, Alex touched on his own personal experiences of “covert and overt” racism in the workplace.

“Why the Meghan interview really resonates with me,” Alex said to his GMB co-star, “is because an ex-work colleague, not of this show, asked me if I was worried of the shade of cocoa that my son was going to come out.

“So I fully understand the hurt that is behind all that,” Alex added.

Piers tried to interject but Alex’s passionate speech continued: “When you’re mixed race, what I find in my own personal experience,

“People gain confidence and they say things to you that they wouldn’t say to a black person.”

Piers then pointed out this kind of conversation was the very reason he’d asked Alex to appear on the show.

And while Alex thanked him for that, he warned the GMB host about the “power of his words” when it comes to his public criticism of the royals.

“I’m not saying that you’re a racist,” Alex told the GMB star, who abruptly hit back: “Well, what are you saying?”

“Do you know what I honestly feel?” Alex snapped back. “I feel that because of your previous relationship with Meghan Markle -“

The row turned heated as Piers interjected: “I didn’t have a relationship with Meghan Markle, I knew her briefly.”

Alex tried to clarify his point further but by this point, Piers clearly wanted to get his own point across.

“All that did was – sorry, I’m allowed to speak!” Piers barked as Alex continued to try to talk.

“All that did was inform me that she is a bit of a cut-and-run,” Piers added.

Piers’s tirade against Meghan continued: “All her life – her father, her ex-husband, her ex-friends, they’ve all been cut out of her life, right?

“It’s an interesting observation that I happen to be one of those people,” Piers added, to which Alex quickly chimed back in.

“I do feel that in this situation -” Alex said but Piers furiously hit back at his colleague once more.

“Let me finish,” Piers said which prompted Susanna Reid to try and bring some order to the pair’s row.

RELATED STORIES

Miss Audrey has been singing the blues ever since Mr. Wilford resurfaced — and this Monday’s Snowpiercer (TNT, 9/8c) will delve into the dark reasons why.

When last we tuned in, the Night Car’s manager and premiere entertainer was looking a bit wobbly, slurring through a welcome for the horde cramming into her cabaret, as Snowpiercer shut down numerous cars to power through a perilous climb. And while newly minted Detective Till wrote it off as Miss Audrey “cracking” like many a passenger, there is a specific reason for her spiral, as Tony Award-winning Broadway vet Lena Hall, who plays the enigmatic chanteuse, shares in this TVLine Q&A.

TVLINE | When they were moving everybody to the Night Car to brace for that big climb, Miss Audrey wasn’t looking too good. She seems a bit off her game. What’s going on?
You know, there’s a lot to unpack. There’s a lot going on. Everyone else is just running around trying to make things not happen, and she knows inevitably what is actually going to happen, so it’s really weighing down on her.

Not only that, she has such a past with Wilford (played by Sean Bean) that we’re going to see more of in Episode 4 and 5, and she just doesn’t know how to deal with the fact that he is there. She doesn’t know what’s going to happen when she sees him again, knowing everything that had happened.

TVLINE | It sounds like her connection with him is a bit more than knowing what his favorite whiskey is.
Correct. There’s a lot there, and she knows it’s coming. I would liken it to the people who knew that this pandemic was happening, while everyone else was running around, not really understanding how bad it’s going to get.

TVLINE | In the promo for this week, it looks like she is being asked to do something that she does not want to. She worries it will “open Pandora’s Box.”
Oh, yes. There’s a lot asked of her, and she knows her vulnerabilities. She basically can’t stop what’s inevitable, and she won’t be happy with it.

Snowpiercer PreviewTVLINE | It feels like Wilford’s return really “flipped a switch” with Miss Audrey, because she had been cool as a cucumber until now.
Yes. She’s had her Night Car, her strength. Her purpose in life changed when they left that station, basically, and she found a new purpose, a broader horizon, a better life for herself. She’s dealt with everyone else’s problems and never her own. She has no one to go to. So, essentially she has never dealt with her own demons and her own s–t, and she’s now suddenly faced with it head on.

TVLINE | Give us a taste of what it’s like when Miss Audrey and Wilford lock eyes on each other again for the first time.
It’s like explosive fire. I would liken it to two people who bring out the absolute worst in each other.

Snowpiercer 1x03TVLINE | Meanwhile, Zarah (Sheila Vand) is leaning towards a dark turn herself, with Josie still alive. Is that anything that Miss Audrey will get a sense of? They seemed to be buddies in Season 1.
Well,  Zarah worked in the Night Car and she was very close with her workers. Miss Audrey taught Zarah everything that she knows, and there’s kind of a “therapist/patient” thing going on between them and at this point. But Audrey doesn’t have any bandwidth for that anymore. In Episode 2, she snapped at Zarah because she just can’t wrap her head around her problems. It’s like, “Zarah, you have bigger fish to fry than that. Just stay safe.” And again, it’s because Miss Audrey knows what’s coming around the bend, and knows it’s going to be horrible for everyone.

TVLINE | I heard we’re going to get a special song from you in Episode 5. What can you say about it?
Yes. I was lucky enough that the team really embraced my music and other sides of me as well. They’ve been doing their research and allowing me to kind of infuse Miss Audrey with a lot more of like the things that I grew up doing, and I think that’s pretty cool. So, for Episode 5 they basically used my voice to tell a story. Previously they licensed a bunch of covers from me, but here they asked for some original music. I had been working on an original album ages ago that stalled out, but I had a bunch of demos and they picked one that they loved, and it reignited that project. But they asked for me to record it in French….

TVLINE | And what language did Lena Hall take in high school?
Spanish, and failed horribly. [Laughs] But I did a lot of research to make sure that it was close to being how a native French speaker would sing. My father speaks fluent French, so I had him translate the lyrics, and then I found a French singer to help me translate that into a song because it is very different when you have to sing something phonetically. I recorded the song, and I am releasing it on [February] 15th, and it’ll be in the show the following week.

TVLINE | If you are telling a story while singing, it almost sounds like a Moulin Rouge sort of moment for the show.
Kind of, yes. I don’t want to give anything away, but she’s already established as a performer and she’s already established as kind of a muse, but here we get to hear all these different sides of her and her voice. It’s very fun.

I love that they asked me for an original, because it did spark this album again, and I am so grateful for that because for the longest time I was just doing covers. I had a rock band, called The Deafening, and we did all original music, but it was like classic rock-sounding. I had been working on this [solo] album with the guitarist of that, but then the band disbanded because everybody moved to different parts of the country. But now these beautiful songs that never got to see the light of day are coming back, and they’re more relevant than ever.

Snowpiercer Season 1

TVLINE | Lastly, I feel like we have almost exclusively seen Miss Audrey in the Night Car. Are we going to see her in any other locations this season? Maybe interacting with other characters, besides Wilford, for the first time?
Certainly.  She is much more around. And one of the best things about Miss Audrey that she magically comes up with the most amazing outfits….

TVLINE | It’s funny, I wondered during Season 1, like, who packed all these fancy fabrics? There was a dancer once in the Night Car who had on, like, a bird costume or something. If I’m boarding a train for the apocalypse, I am grabbing all sweat pants and jeans.
[Laughs] Well, [Snowpiercer] was supposed to be a luxury liner. And the Night Car was originally supposed to be a very debaucherous car, a place where everyone did drugs and drank. And Miss Audrey sang and entertained, but also kind of was a concubine, running her harem of women and men, and those who have yet to make up their minds. We joke that Miss Audrey has an entire train car that is just her wardrobe!

Denise Welch clashes with Eamonn Holmes in explosive COVID row: ‘How am I causing panic?’ https://briefnews.eu/denise-welch-clashes-with-eamonn-holmes-in-explosive-covid-row-how-am-i-causing-panic/ https://briefnews.eu/denise-welch-clashes-with-eamonn-holmes-in-explosive-covid-row-how-am-i-causing-panic/#respond Fri, 04 Sep 2020 13:59:39 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/denise-welch-clashes-with-eamonn-holmes-in-explosive-covid-row-how-am-i-causing-panic/

This Morning saw Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford back for the final instalment of the week. As ever, the presenters were joined by a range of guests to discuss various topics. One of this morning’s talking points remained COVID-19 after some famous faces, including Denise Welch, have come out and given their thoughts on the Government’s strategy towards the disease. However, when host Eamonn accused Denise of causing “panic” she continued to stay firm on her stance in a heated discussion.

Today’s show saw Denise and This Morning’s resident doctor, Dr Sara Kayat speak out on the pandemic.

With the Government now urging Britons to go back to work as life slowly begins to resume to normal, many members of the public have differing feelings on what should happen next.

And when Eamonn led a debate between Denise and Dr Sara, the former slammed the media and Government’s response, claiming they were not explaining how things had improved.

Denise claimed: “At the moment, people aren’t going in (to hospital), aren’t putting their sick relatives into hospital – it’s criminal.”

Taking aim at the news coverage once more, the Denise continued: “What we have is, ‘Bong, fears rise as spikes reach 1,075 positive tests per day’.

“So if you’re going to frighten us with how many were dying every day, please enlighten us and tell us how things have improved, when no one is dying.”

Touching on the issue of mental health, she said: “As a mental health person, if people want to say, ‘She’s on about that again,’ I don’t care because of the people it does help – I will do anything to help balance the fear-mongering.

“The other day, it said, ‘Universities could become the care homes of the second wave,’ how dare they?”

Those watching at home flocked to Twitter to comment on the debate, with many coming out in support of what the star had shared.

One said: “Thank you, you are totally right, I work in a care home and we’ve said we will lose more residents from mental health due to lockdown than COVID! Plus I’m a high-risk pregnancy and have to go to appointments on my own, so no support at appointments.”

Another shared: “Denise you are smashing it on @thismorning thank you so much.”

“I couldn’t agree with what you are saying more.  So much scaremongering it’s terrible!” commented a third.

However, not everyone agreed with Denise, with one saying: “Please calm down. I know you’re passionate but I can’t listen to shouty people! It’s stressing me out. Calm comes across better.”

Another added: “Why on earth is This Morning giving a platform to tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy theorist Denise Welch? Who next? David Ike?”

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.

On Friday, President Trump took to Twitter in response to the Black Lives Matter protests and wrote in a now blocked but still accessible post: “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

There was a huge backlash from users of the micro-blogging site, with the social media giant taking action to ensure the comment was still visible, but could not be liked or replied to.

The interview with Mr Giuliani today started with the former Mayor stating he believed Derek Chauvin, the white police officer who held his knee against Mr Floyd’s neck before he became unconscious and died as a result, should have been “charged with first-degree murder.”

However, as the discussion moved on to the post made by the American leader in response to the outrage over police brutality, the attorney jumped to his defence.

This transpired into a clash between Morgan and his guest, which led the latter to declare the interview was “over”.

BACK BRITAIN’S BRAVE NHS HEROES – CLICK HERE NOW

Piers Morgan was riled up during today’s edition of Good Morning Britain when he and co-star Susanna Reid interviewed Conservative MP Helen Whately via live video link from her house in Faversham. During the conversation, the presenter asked the Care Minister about personal protective equipment, the staggering increase in care home workers deaths and frontline testing. But at one point he accused the guest of laughing.

“We’re doing everything we can to protect vulnerable people -“ Whately began but she was cut off by Morgan: “Well yes, I assume you are doing all that, but is it true that 4,000 people have died in care homes? Yes or no?”

“Well I’m glad you appreciate we are doing that, it’s really important to take the steps we can -“ Whatley attempted to answer but Morgan interrupted once more.

“No I’ll tell you what’s important is if you just answer straight questions – is it true that 4,000 people -“ Morgan probed but he became distracted as he asked: “Why are you laughing?”

Explaining her smirk was in reference to Morgan constantly interrupting her she said: “I’m coming to answer your questions but -“

“Why are you laughing? What do you find funny about this?” Morgan hit back.

“I don’t think it’s funny in the slightest!” Whately defended but those watching at home saw the presenter ask again: “Then why do you keep laughing?”

“I’m not laughing at all,” Whately replied.

“I literally just asked you; is it true that 4,00 elderly people have died and all you can do is laugh! What is the matter with you?” Morgan slammed.

“I’m not laughing! Please don’t suggest for a minute I’m laughing -“ Whately asked.

“We literally just saw you laughing,” Morgan berated again.

“I have not been [laughing] but it feels like you are shouting at me and not giving me a chance to answer,” the guest replied.

“I have asked you a question three times now and you won’t answer it! Is it true – let me try one more time – is it true 4,000 people, elderly vulnerable people have died of coronavirus in our care homes?” Morgan asked.

“The data we have from the ONS – which is the source of data – has told us, up to April 3, 2017 people have died from coronavirus in care homes. I believe because I have been talking to care providers and representatives, and very sadly, very sadly, more people have died in care homes,” she explained.

Morgan interrupted: “How many?”

Whatley continued: “And we are working to make sure we have the data – but it’s important the data is accurate.”

‘Petulant child’ Prince Harry attacked over explosive tell-all interview threat https://briefnews.eu/petulant-child-prince-harry-attacked-over-explosive-tell-all-interview-threat/ https://briefnews.eu/petulant-child-prince-harry-attacked-over-explosive-tell-all-interview-threat/#respond Mon, 13 Jan 2020 16:26:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/petulant-child-prince-harry-attacked-over-explosive-tell-all-interview-threat/

There is growing fear among senior figures in the palace that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could agree to an explosive tell-all interview if the Queen doesn’t give them what they want. ITV’s Tom Bradby suggested that the royal couple would reveal disparaging details about the royal family, including bullying towards Meghan. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, broadcaster and journalist Andrew Pierce savaged this threat as childish.

He said: “But Harry’s threat, via his friend Tom Bradby, to do an interview is the sign of a petulant child.”

This attack on Prince Harry comes as the underfire royal is set to attend unprecedented crisis talks with Queen and senior royals today.

Meghan is likely to dial in from Canada for the summit at Sandringham, while Harry will be joined by the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William.

It will be the first face-to-face meeting between the main members of the family since Harry and Meghan dropped their bombshell announcement on Wednesday.

JUST IN: Farage exposes who is to blame for the royal crisis – and it’s NOT Meghan Markle

The crunch meeting comes after five days of chaos amid claims that the Sussexes feel “driven out” of the royal family.

The Queen is demanding a swift resolution to prevent long-lasting damage to the monarchy.

On Sunday, Prince William expressed his sadness over the breakdown of his relationship with his brother.

He told a friend: “I’ve put my arm around my brother all our lives and I can’t do that any more, we’re separate entities.

“I’m sad about that. All we can do, and all I can do, is try and support them and hope that the time comes when we’re all singing from the same page.”

According to insiders today, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle feel that they have been pushed out of the royal family by Prince William’s “bullying attitude”.

Sources also told the Daily Mail that Harry is understood to be in turmoil over his decision to ditch his senior royal role.

Talks today will centre on how much time the couple intend to spend in North America and in the UK, and where Archie will be raised.

The funding and royal duties of the pair will also be a hotly-debated topic at Sandringham.

Whoopi Goldberg and Meghan McCain Downplay Their Explosive View Fight: ‘Calm Down, All of You’ (Watch Video) https://briefnews.eu/whoopi-goldberg-and-meghan-mccain-downplay-their-explosive-view-fight-calm-down-all-of-you-watch-video/ https://briefnews.eu/whoopi-goldberg-and-meghan-mccain-downplay-their-explosive-view-fight-calm-down-all-of-you-watch-video/#respond Tue, 17 Dec 2019 19:40:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/whoopi-goldberg-and-meghan-mccain-downplay-their-explosive-view-fight-calm-down-all-of-you-watch-video/

Just 24 hours after trading barbs on live television, Meghan McCain and Whoopi Goldberg returned to The View on Tuesday with remarkably less combative dispositions.

But first, a refresher: On Monday’s episode, Goldberg became so annoyed by McCain consistently talking over her fellow co-hosts that she finally lashed out. “Girl, please stop talking,” Goldberg said to McCain, who replied, “No problem. I won’t talk the rest of the show.” Goldberg then said, “I’m okay with that. I’m okay with that. If you are going to behave like this.” After attempting (and failing) to proceed to the next topic, a flustered Goldberg threw to commercial.

This brings us to Tuesday’s show, which began with the following explanation from Goldberg: “This is not an indication that women can’t sit down and talk. This is not an indication that we don’t know how to deal with each other on camera. This is happening in real time … and everybody, wherever you sit in all of this, don’t assume that we’re over here with butcher knives under the table. It just doesn’t work that way. This is our gig, and sometimes it goes off the rails. If you can say that’s never happened to any of y’all, that you’ve never had this happen, then you understand where we’re coming from. It’s a TV show, we’re on together for an hour and we step in poopy. Everybody just calm down.”

When Goldberg was finished speaking, McCain assured the audience that their friendship remains strong. “Whoopi and I get along great,” she said. “We’ve been friends for a long time, she was friends with my dad. We fight like we’re family. It’s all good. Calm down, all of you.”

And the co-hosts didn’t leave it at that. McCain also took the media to task for their coverage of Monday’s scuffle, saying, “I just don’t think it would happen with men. There were a lot of commentators, particularly Greta Van Susteren, who were talking about the coverage of us, and how sexist the language always is, especially reporting on when the fights happen on this show. I, for one, am over it.”

Goldberg was quick to remind McCain that this is nothing new. “It’s 20 years of this,” she said. “I’ve only been here for 10 or 11 or something, but I always remember people saying, ‘You girls, you ladies…’ It’s like, wait a minute, we’re actually human beings having conversations that you don’t want to have!”

But while the co-hosts exchanged pleasantries on camera, McCain’s social media told a different story. Just hours before filming Tuesday’s episode, she tweeted a gif of Game of Thrones‘ Daenerys Targaryen, greeting “all the fellow conservative ‘girls’ who won’t be quiet.’”

Coronation Street spoilers: Jim McDonald’s return set to be explosive after shocking news https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-jim-mcdonalds-return-set-to-be-explosive-after-shocking-news/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-jim-mcdonalds-return-set-to-be-explosive-after-shocking-news/#respond Fri, 27 Sep 2019 12:22:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-jim-mcdonalds-return-set-to-be-explosive-after-shocking-news/

After only learning a matter of weeks ago Emma (played by Alexandra Mardell) was his daughter, he’s now in for some more shocking news as it is revealed she may have inherited his dad Jim’s illness.

It’s been a dramatic few weeks for the McDonald family, as Steve (Simon Gregson) recently made the discovery Emma was his long lost daughter.

And he is set to be left terrified as she collapses for unknown reasons later this autumn.

In upcoming scenes, Emma will start to feel unwell, and leaves the salon to head to the doctors.

However, before she can make it there, she falls to the floor and is discovered by Gary Windass (Mikey North) who calls for help.

READ MORE: Coronation Street spoilers: Robert betrays Michelle over killer plot?

As Emma remains unsure what her mysterious symptoms could mean, Steve is concerned she may have inherited Jim’s (Charles Lawson) myotonic dystrophy.

Speaking to The Sun, an unnamed Coronation Street source said: ”Emma’s not going to understand what’s wrong with her but her dad Steve knows only too well what it could be.

“Jim’s illness skipped a generation with Steve but the possibility of it affecting Emma is almost too much to contemplate.

“It’s going to be a really harrowing time for the McDonalds if it’s what caused Emma’s collapse.”

Recent weeks have seen the Emma struggle to cope with the revelation, however the two finally seem to have bonded.

If Emma does indeed have myotonic dystrophy, it could bring further heartbreak, and is sure to pave the way for a difficult time for the McDonalds.

Actress Alexandra, who plays Emma, is planning on sticking around, telling the Daily Star: ”I’ve just signed a new contract and I’m more than happy to stay for as long as they’ll have me.”

“You’ve got people that have been in the show for decades, and I think you need to clock up at least five years before you feel any different,” she added.

Therefore, is a return for Jim on the cards this year?

If she has inherited the disease, he might well need to be on hand to guide her through the illness.

However, Jim did not leave himself a lot of friends in the cobbles, so if he does indeed return, it’s sure to be dramatic.

Coronation Street continues tonight at 7:30pm on ITV

Emmerdale spoilers: ‘Explosive’ Kim Tate star drops Joe Tate return bombshell https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-explosive-kim-tate-star-drops-joe-tate-return-bombshell/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-explosive-kim-tate-star-drops-joe-tate-return-bombshell/#respond Sun, 09 Jun 2019 01:10:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-explosive-kim-tate-star-drops-joe-tate-return-bombshell/

Viewers were absolutely devastated when Emmerdale declared Joe Tate (played by Ned Porteous) as dead following his altercation with Cain Dingle (Ned Porteous) in the midst of Kim’s (Claire King) dramatic return plot last October.

Joe had been determined to marry love-of-his-life Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) when Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) revealed he’d been ordered to kill him.

And while Joe refused to leave the village for his own safety, in the end he wasn’t accidentally killed by Cain as viewers thought – he was shipped off to Montecarlo by his godfather Graham.

Ever since it was revealed he was alive however, ITV fans have been begging producers to bring the tortured character back from his travels, especially now Kim seems to have settled back into her old life at Home Farm.

But if Joe returned, he would likely try and steal his family home back from his cold and manipulative step-mother.

It seems actress Claire thinks the same – and there could even be violence between the pair.

Speaking in a recent interview, the star teased: “I can’t see him coming back in the foreseeable future.

“But if he did come back and they saw each other I imagine it would be quite explosive, wouldn’t you?”

“Kim and Joe are cut from the same cloth,” she went on to tell The Sun Online. “And he was from the other side of the Tate family that Kim did not get on with.”

Joe’s disappearance from the Yorkshire Dales set in motion all sorts of drama for the Dingle family.

Utterly heartbroken, Debbie refused to forgive her father Cain when she discovered he’d apparently “killed” her fiance and the duo have been at odds for months.

Cain’s own mental health suffered at the possibility of killing a man – albeit accidental – and he began spiralling out of control.

Yet when there seemed to be a light at the end of the tunnel – Joe being alive – the news did little to assuage Debbie’s feelings of distrust against her father and Cain was forced to consider he would never get his first-born back.

All that changed this week after the death of Dingle matriarch and legendary Emmerdale character Lisa Dingle (Jane Cox).

Lisa had been battling terminal cancer for months in Scotland, and it was only when she was looking towards her last months did the mother-of-one return to the village.

Following her unexpected death on the day of her wedding to Zack Dingle (Steve Halliwell), the Dingle family rallied around to give Lisa a beautiful send-off and support her husband and daughter Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) in their time of need.

What’s more, the Dingles only realised after Lisa’s death she had written secret letters for them all.

Lydia (Karen Blick) was the only one who knew what Lisa’s last act was, and Lisa’s loved ones were equally upset and pleased with their private goodbyes.

Sadly Zack is still struggling so much he hasn’t even been able to open his letter yet.

Emmerdale continues Monday at 7pm on ITV.

The following post contains major spoilers for Blindspot‘s Season 4 finale.

It’s going to be a long and brutal hiatus for Blindspot fans.

The NBC drama’s fourth season concluded on Friday with a two-hour finale, which left the lives of Weller, Reade, Zapata and Patterson hanging in the balance. And though the show has been renewed for a truncated final season, it won’t be back on NBC’s schedule until midseason. In other words? At least seven months remain until we find out which FBI agents — if any — survived.

“It would be safe to assume that not everyone makes it out of that safe house alive,” series creator Martin Gero cryptically tells us. (Gero previously hinted, ahead of Blindspot‘s renewal, that Friday’s finale would be a “very bad” series ender if the show ultimately got cancelled. And now we totally understand why.)

A quick recap: In the final two episodes, the FBI discovered that Madeline Burke’s “Project Helios” involved hacking into the country’s power grid and plunging the entire Eastern seaboard into darkness (and chaos). Not only did Madeline’s henchman, Dominic, successfully pull off the scheme (though he got shot and bled out in the process), but Madeline successfully framed Jane, Weller and the entire FBI team, spinning a convincing story to make it seem as though the agents were responsible for Project Helios.

The FBI team (minus Rich Dotcom, who stayed behind at headquarters) discovered they’d been framed while en route to Iceland, where they planned to find hacker Kathy Gustafson, who was helping carry out Project Helios. But after realizing they’d immediately be arrested upon landing in Iceland, they decided to jump out of the plane instead (!) in order to buy some time. Once the agents had parachuted down to safety, a friend of Rich Dotcom’s helped them evade the authorities, bringing them to a remote cabin where they could lay low until they resumed their fugitive lifestyles under new identities.

Unfortunately, Madeline (who was released from prison and given an actual job with the FBI) was able to locate the team’s hideout… and she ordered a drone strike on the cabin, much to Matthew Weitz’s horror. In the finale’s closing scene, Jane — who was standing several yards away from the cabin, having volunteered to take first watch that night — looked on in horror as a missile hit the cabin, immediately destroying the entire structure (and potentially the four agents still inside of it).

After screening Blindspot‘s finale, TVLine spoke with Gero for more insight on that explosive cliffhanger, and how it will shape the drama’s fifth and final season.

Blindspot Season 4 FinaleTVLINE | In most of your previous finales, you’ve tied up the season-long arcs pretty nicely, and the Big Bads — Shepherd, Roman and others — have all been defeated. Why did you decide to subvert that this time and let Madeline get the win?
There’s a couple reasons. One, we want to be unexpected. We want our audience not to be ahead of us all the time. And you’re absolutely right: For the most part, the season finales — because we’re novelistic in our approach and every season has a beginning, middle and end — typically have the bad guys get their comeuppance. When we started talking about Season 4 — or, more importantly, what we wanted to do with Season 5 — we just decided, “Man, it’d be so awesome to spend the whole season laying the groundwork for Madeline to just win.” We really have the team take a loss, which you don’t often see in procedural television. It was super exciting for us, because it leads to a very propulsive Season 5, unlike any [season] we’ve ever done. It’s basically the team against the world, trying to still take down Madeline but also trying to clear their name. And this isn’t going to be something like, “They’ll be back on the FBI set by Episode 2!” The whole final season is about getting back home.

TVLINE | The last time we spoke, I had asked you if the Season 4 finale could possibly serve as a series finale, and you said definitely not — and now that completely makes sense. Were there ever any discussions, when you were breaking this episode, of not doing such a drastic cliffhanger, just in case you weren’t picked up?
This was always the plan. We have an incredible partnership with NBC. They’ve been such amazing champions of this show for five seasons now, and they really felt [that we should] do a Season 4 that demands a Season 5. And that’s what we did. There was no backup plan. We felt relatively confident, as we were making that episode, that there would be a Season 5. If NBC had sent up a flare, like, “Hey, guys, it’s not looking good,” then we might have altered it. But no, that was always the plan, and no alternate ending was considered.

TVLINE | The only character we can confidently talk about right now is Jane.
[Laughs] Sure.

TVLINE | Where does she go from here? How will she cope after what she’s seen in this finale?
The easiest way to talk about it is: Should members of the team survive, they’re bonded together now, closer than they’ve ever been — the ones that survive, if they survive. The idea of revenge and justice is heavy in their minds. And it’s interesting for Jane because the rest of the team — sure, they’ve bent the rules sometimes, but they feel like they’re living a just and moral existence, whereas Jane’s big arc of the season was her reckoning with the fact that she has done terrible things in a past life, so to speak. Remi is not a separate person, Remi is a part of her. What’s interesting now is to watch Jane call on some of those experiences she had as a terrorist, to call on some of those experiences she had when she worked in kidnap and ransom, in order to operate outside the law for a greater good.

TVLINE | Before the cabin was blown up, the team had resolved a lot of the issues they’d been arguing about on their flight to Iceland. Assuming any of the team survives, will any of that tension linger in Season 5?
Certainly there’s going to be tension, just because of the fact that they’re isolated together. They don’t have anyone else to go to, they don’t have friends or family. It’s not that they have cabin fever, because that cabin blew up, but there certainly will be stuff that needs to get resolved because of the close quarters they’re working in. But also, on our show, people really love the team, and the reality is, for storytelling purposes, we’ve always needed to keep some of them at odds with each other for inner conflict and all that. But now, for the ones that can make it out, there’s going to be a great unity and a great common purpose of, “We’ve got to fix this together. We have to trust each other.” It’ll be some of the purest team stuff that the show’s ever done.

TVLINE | How does Matthew Weitz play into all of this? It seems in the finale that he’s really on the team’s side now, but he’s also been untrustworthy at different points of the season.
What Matthew Weitz looks out for is himself more than anything. [Laughs] As long as his interests align with the team’s, then he’s on their side. What I love about that character is we spent the first half of the season making you go, “I love this guy! This guy’s OK!” And then the second it was inconvenient for him, he immediately starts to blackmail Weller and threatened to put Jane in a black site. He has that in him still, and that’s why that character is so fun. He doesn’t have a lot of subtext. [Laughs] He says what he means. He’s not trying to hide anything, he’s very overt with what he wants and what he’s willing to do for it. But now that his power has been greatly neutered by Madeline, he’s going to want to take her down, too.

TVLINE | The skydiving sequence in this finale was completely insane, and you had mentioned in a previous conversation that it was quite the undertaking to film. What was that process like? Were there any mishaps during production?
When we decided to start doing these international shoots, the idea was we would go somewhere and we wouldn’t take any lights, [we’d do] very few stunts, and we’d just shoot someone walking outside in Paris or whatever. And then as we got into it and started doing Venice with that boat chase, or the huge rooftop fight in Japan, we started to push the envelope and ask, “What is possible on our budget and timeline if we plan far ahead?” So this sequence was planned for six months.

The skydiving team was captained by some of the people from Mission: Impossible, we flew them in from the U.K. And it was tremendously dangerous — maybe the most dangerous thing we’ve done on the show. We’d done skydiving before, but it was under pristine conditions, and they were just falling down on a flat piece of ground with not a lot of wind. This time, they were landing, like, 300 feet away from a glacier. The wind was exceptionally high, the terrain was rugged. That shot of Patterson falling and getting dragged? That actually happened. We didn’t plan that. The parachutes they were using are twice the size because they can hang in the air a lot longer, which is great for us, because it’s hard to shoot them if they fall too fast. But it means that when you get to the ground, they’re very unwieldy in the wind. We got really, really lucky. That team was extraordinary, and that whole sequence was done over two jumps on two different days that we were able to tie together. But it’s all real. There’s no CG in that sequence. [Laughs] It’s incredible.

TVLINE | When the show was renewed for a final season, you wrote that this had been your initial plan for the show, that it would run for five years. Have these first four seasons been in line with your original vision?
When I sat down and wrote that mini-Bible for myself [before pitching the show], the level of detail dissipated with each season. [Laughs] I knew Season 5 was going to be [the team] on the run, and it would have an ending that I can’t really talk about right now, but the ending of the show is something we’ve been playing around with for a while. But what’s amazing about working on a TV show is it’s no one’s idea, you know? It’s everyone’s idea. There’s 450 people that work on this show on a daily basis… Everyone puts themselves in the show, so the show grows and mutates from your original ideas, and we’ve been evolving those ideas for what we wanted the seasons to be. But if it came down to the sentence that I wrote for each season [originally], it’s come pretty close. The details grew around the incredible people that we have on the show.

TVLINE | And looking ahead to Season 5, is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to? Any stories you haven’t gotten to tell yet that you’re hoping to do?
You know, it’s so rare for a show like this to know it’s going to end. It’s such an incredible privilege to do these amazing episodes and really honor the show in a great way — to give people all of those fan moments and proper goodbyes, not only to our main characters, but also the dozen or so supporting characters that people love when they drop in. [Season 5] is a little more compact, so the storytelling is even more dynamic, and we know where we’re going. We know we’re going toward a very specific end now. This isn’t something where we have to set up Season 6 or Season 7. We can be a little more reckless than we’ve been, in a good way, as far as the outcome of some of these stories. Fans of the show are in for a pretty crazy ride.
