Motherboard (via The Verge) reports hackers used Russia’s Yandex Taxi ride-hailing app to order dozens of drivers to coverage on Kutuzovsky Prospekt, one of the city’s main thoroughfares. The act caused traffic on part of the already congested street to come to a standstill for about 40 minutes while Yandex worked to address the situation.

“On the morning of September 1st, Yandex Taxi encountered an attempt by attackers to disrupt the service — several dozen drivers received bulk orders to the Fili district of Moscow,” a Yandex spokesperson told Motherboard. In a separate statement shared with Russia’s state-owned TASS news agency, Yandex said it reworked its routing algorithm following the attack to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The event is one of the first known instances of hackers exploiting a ride-hailing app to create a traffic jam.

Several Twitter accounts claiming affiliation with Anonymous say the hacktivist collective is behind the incident. On Friday, one Anonymous account said the group worked with the IT Army of Ukraine, a volunteer organization formed at the start of the war, to carry out the attack.

Anonymous previously claimed responsibility for a cyberattack that took down multiple Russian government websites, including those belonging to the Kremlin and the Ministry of Defence. “Faced with this series of attacks that Ukraine has been suffering from the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, we could not help but support the Ukrainian people,” the group said at the time.

Microsoft found a severe one-click exploit in TikTok’s Android app https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-found-a-severe-one-click-exploit-in-tiktoks-android-app/ https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-found-a-severe-one-click-exploit-in-tiktoks-android-app/#respond Wed, 31 Aug 2022 18:04:06 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-found-a-severe-one-click-exploit-in-tiktoks-android-app/ A serious vulnerability found by Microsoft in the TikTok Android app could have allowed hackers to hijack millions of accounts. On Wednesday, the company’s 365 Defender Research Team detailed a one-click exploit it informed TikTok of in February. The good news is that the social media company promptly patched the vulnerability before today’s disclosure and Microsoft says it has no evidence of someone using it out in the wild.

“We gave them information about the vulnerability and collaborated to help fix this issue,” Microsoft’s Tanmay Ganacharya told The Verge. “TikTok responded quickly, and we commend the efficient and professional resolution from the security team.”

According to Microsoft, the vulnerability involved an oversight with TikTok’s deep linking functionality. On Android, developers can program their apps to handle certain URLs in specific ways. For instance, when you tap on a Twitter embed in Chrome and the Twitter app automatically opens on your phone as a result, that’s an example of the deep linking feature working as intended.

However, Microsoft found a way to bypass the verification process TikTok had in place to restrict deep links from executing certain actions. They then discovered they could use that vulnerability to access all the primary functions of an account, including the ability to post content and message other TikTok users. The flaw was present in both global versions of TikTok’s Android app. The two releases have more than 1.5 billion downloads between them, meaning the potential impact of someone discovering the vulnerability before it was patched could have been massive.

Microsoft recommends all TikTok users on Android download the latest version of the app as soon as they can. More broadly, you can protect yourself in the future from similar exploits by not clicking on sketchy links. It’s also good practice to avoid sideloading apps as you don’t know how someone could have altered the APK.

Microsoft has issued an emergency update that fixes a critical Internet Explorer vulnerability that attackers are actively exploiting on the Internet.

The memory-corruption flaw allows attackers to remotely execute malicious code when computers use IE to visit a booby-trapped website, Microsoft said Wednesday. Indexed as CVE-2018-8653, the flaw affects all supported versions of Windows. The vulnerability involves the way Microsoft’s scripting engine handles objects in memory in Internet Explorer.

In a separate advisory, Microsoft said the vulnerability is being used in targeted attacks, but the company didn’t elaborate. Microsoft credited Clement Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group with discovering the vulnerability. No other details were available about the vulnerability or exploits at the time this post was being reported.

Over the past 11 months, the processors running our computers, and in some cases phones, have succumbed to a host of attacks. Bearing names such as Meltdown and Spectre, BranchScope, TLBleed, and Foreshadow, the exploits threaten to siphon some of our most sensitive secrets—say passwords or cryptographic keys—out of the silicon microarchitecture in ways that can’t be detected or stopped by traditional security defenses. On Friday, researchers disclosed yet another leak that has already been shown to exist on a wide range of Intel chips and may also affect other makers, too.

PortSmash, as the new attack is being called, exploits a largely overlooked side-channel in Intel’s hyperthreading technology. A proprietary implementation of simultaneous multithreading, hyperthreading reduces the amount of time needed to carry out parallel computing tasks, in which large numbers of calculations or executions are carried out simultaneously. The performance boost is the result of two logical processor cores sharing the hardware of a single physical processor. The added logical cores make it easier to divide large tasks into smaller ones that can be completed more quickly.

Port contention as a side channel

In a paper scheduled for release soon, researchers document how they were able to exploit the newly discovered leak to recover an elliptic curve private key from a server running an OpenSSL-powered TLS server. The attack, which was carried out on servers running Intel Skylake and Kaby Lake chips and Ubuntu, worked by sending one logical core a steady stream of instructions and carefully measuring the time it took for them to get executed.

In late 2016, Google’s security team scrambled to fix a critical vulnerability that allowed attackers to gain unfettered root access to Android devices by using a relatively new class of exploit that manipulates data stored in memory chips. Now, 21 months later, many of the same researchers behind the attack, dubbed Drammer, are back to say that a large number of Android phones and tablets remain vulnerable to the rooting attacks because the patches Google deployed weren’t adequate.

Both Drammer and the newly disclosed RAMpage attacks exploit Rowhammer, a class of exploit that alters data stored in memory chips by repeatedly accessing the internal rows where individual bits are stored. By “hammering” the rows thousands of times a second, the technique causes the bits to flip, meaning 0s are changed to 1s and vice versa.

The original Rowhammer attack against PCs made it possible for an untrusted computer application to gain nearly unfettered system privileges or to bypass security sandboxes designed to keep malicious code from accessing sensitive operating system resources. A later variation allowed JavaScript hosted on websites to effect the same security-sensitive bitflips.

More than 115,000 websites—many run by major universities, government organizations, and media companies—remained wide open to hacker takeovers because they hadn’t installed critical patches released 10 weeks ago, security researcher Troy Mursch said Monday. A separate researcher reported on Tuesday that many of the sites were already compromised and were being used to surreptitiously mine cryptocurrencies or push malware on unsuspecting visitors.

Infected pages included those belonging to the University of Southern California, Computer World’s Brazil site, and the Arkansas Judiciary’s Courts and Community Initiative, which were causing visitors’ computers to run resource-intensive code that mines cryptocurrency, Jérôme Segura, lead malware intelligence analyst at antivirus provider Malwarebytes, told Ars.

Segura said a Harvard University page that earlier was also infected with mining malware had since been defaced, presumably by a different party. Meanwhile, a Western Michigan University page that earlier was infected with code that pushed a malicious browser extension was later repaired. Segura reported his findings Tuesday and has indexed more than 900 infected sites here.

Hackers are actively trying to exploit a high-severity vulnerability in widely used Cisco networking software that can give complete control over protected networks and access to all traffic passing over them, the company has warned.

When Cisco officials disclosed the bug last week in a range of Adaptive Security Appliance products, they said they had no evidence anyone was actively exploiting it. Earlier this week, the officials updated their advisory to indicate that was no longer the case.

“The Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) is aware of public knowledge of the vulnerability that is described in this advisory,” the officials wrote. “Cisco PSIRT is aware of attempted malicious use of the vulnerability described in this advisory.”

Mac exploit lets you change App Store preferences with any password https://briefnews.eu/mac-exploit-lets-you-change-app-store-preferences-with-any-password/ https://briefnews.eu/mac-exploit-lets-you-change-app-store-preferences-with-any-password/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2018 00:46:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mac-exploit-lets-you-change-app-store-preferences-with-any-password/

Apple’s Mac password troubles aren’t over yet. Users have discovered that it’s possible to change Mac App Store preferences in macOS High Sierra using any password. You do need to login as an administrator, which is supposed to unlock preferences, but you’re allowed to use any password you like if the preference is locked and you need to get access again. Other sections still require a correct password.

We’ve asked Apple for comment on the apparent bug and will let you know if it can provide a response, although we’ve learned that this shouldn’t expose users and that it should be fixed with the upcoming macOS 10.13.3 update (the fix is already present in the beta).

It’s not going to be a serious issue when an intruder needs admin-level access, but it could be a concern if an attacker already has those privileges. They could loosen your password restrictions for downloads (say, to go on a shopping spree without your consent) or force automatic updates if they know a newer app or OS release is vulnerable. And of course, this illustrates that the company still has avoidable security hiccups to address.

Roar to exploit Sydney’s gruelling Cup win https://briefnews.eu/roar-to-exploit-sydneys-gruelling-cup-win/ https://briefnews.eu/roar-to-exploit-sydneys-gruelling-cup-win/#respond Wed, 22 Nov 2017 09:19:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roar-to-exploit-sydneys-gruelling-cup-win/ BRISBANE Roar intend to spoil Sydney FC’s party at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

If there’s a good time to get the reigning A-League champions, it’s this weekend.

The Sky Blues go into the match after playing two hours of football on Tuesday night when they beat Adelaide United 2-1 in the FFA Cup final.

Star man Milos Ninkovic limped off in the 62nd minute, while player-of-the-match Adrian Mierzejewski is another who may struggle to back up.

“I’m pretty sure there are going to be a couple of changes to the Sydney team,” Roar coach John Aloisi said.

A Sydney FC spokesman remained hopeful that Ninkovic would play on Saturday night.

“We expect him to be fit at this stage and will closely monitor his progression over the coming days,” the spokesman said.

Sydney’s Brazilian striker Bobo, who scored his side’s extra-time winner on Tuesday, said it would be business as usual this weekend.

“We can take a lot of confidence from (the Cup final win) but we’ve still got a job to do on Saturday night and we look forward now to the next game,” Bobo said.

“We have two days of recovery [training] and then we’ll be ready for the A-League game (against the Roar),” he said.

It’s the second year in succession the Roar have been the next opponent of the FFA Cup winners.

Last season it was Melbourne City, who three days after beating Sydney 1-0 in the Cup decider were held to a 1-1 draw by the Roar at AAMI Park.

Amazon Echo and Google Home were vulnerable to Bluetooth exploit https://briefnews.eu/amazon-echo-and-google-home-were-vulnerable-to-bluetooth-exploit/ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-echo-and-google-home-were-vulnerable-to-bluetooth-exploit/#respond Wed, 15 Nov 2017 20:55:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazon-echo-and-google-home-were-vulnerable-to-bluetooth-exploit/

Back in September, Bluetooth-connected device owners got a little scare when security firm Armis disclosed a new hack exploit known as BlueBorne. In theory, bad actors could target smartphones, tablets and such using specific vectors in Bluetooth connectivity. Armis had informed Apple, Microsoft and Google months before and they patched up the vulnerabilities ahead of the news release. But today the firm disclosed that it wasn’t just handheld devices that might have been affected — Amazon’s Echo and Google Home were vulnerable, too.

Once again, Armis notified the companies in question long enough for them to patch out the vulnerabilities, so updated devices should be safe. (Echo owners can verify for themselves by making sure their devices are using version v591448720 or newer.) But the firm noted in its release that each of the 15 million Amazon Echoes and 5 million Google Homes sold were potentially at risk from BlueBorne.

The former used Linux code that could have been targeted by a remote code execution vulnerability in the Linux kernal, while the latter had an information leak vulnerability in Android’s Bluetooth stack. That means Amazon Echoes could have been taken over and Google Homes shut down via denial-of-service. Below, Armis simulated how an Echo would be taken over.

Just like the other BlueBorne vulnerabilities, users wouldn’t have known if their Echoes or Homes had been affected. But those devices posed additional risk given that they’re constantly listening to Bluetooth communications and, thanks to their limited UI, there’s no way to turn it off.
