Florence, a Category 2 hurricane that has already prompted massive evacuations in the US, is far from being the only one roaming through the Atlantic. Another hurricane, Helene, is devolving in the eastern part of the ocean and moving northeast towards Europe, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) says. However, this Category 1 hurricane is expected to lose steam before it actually arrives at Europe’s shores, as the scientists believe it will eventually come to the western part of the continent in a form of a storm early next week.
Meanwhile, in the Caribbean Sea, a tropical storm Isaac is making its way through the Lesser Antilles as its wind speed reaches more than 70 kilometers per hour. However, it is also expected to lose power and arrive in Jamaica in a form of a tropical depression next Monday.
Another storm, Joyce, has also formed in the Atlantic Ocean and is now heading towards the Portuguese islands of the Azores, where, according to NHC forecasts, it will arrive as a tropical depression early next week.
The Atlantic, however, has more potentially unpleasant surprises up its sleeve. On Thursday, meteorologists recorded a disturbance in the center of the Gulf of Mexico that in the next 48 hours could become yet another tropical storm.
It is also not the only part of the Northern hemisphere hit by foul weather. In the Pacific Ocean, the super typhoon Mangkhut is approaching the northern part of the Philippines, where the authorities have already ordered evacuations. Meteorologist Tim Heller has tweeted that during his 35-year career he has “never seen so much activity in the tropics all at the same time.”

The oceans are “exploding with cyclonic activity,” The Washington Post says in an article explaining that the simultaneous formation of several storms in the Atlantic is due to the sudden alignment of two factors: energy and wind. Strong winds in the atmosphere can prevent the development of storms at the lower altitudes but now the winds in all these regions are mild. In addition, wind shear has reached its seasonal minimum, causing any incipient tropical disturbance to become a storm.

A viral video has emerged online capturing the terrifying moment a pavement explodes.
Filmed in Amsterdam, a large power outage was reported by Dutch newspaper Nu on March 9.
As a result of a cable being hit, the explosion underneath the pavement occurred and sent out a large plume of fire into the street.
It makes for a scary watch as people walk by just seconds beforehand.
As people walk across the pavement, a cafe with tables and seats can be seen whilst a man is up a ladder.
One man narrowly avoids injury as he walks quickly, only for steam to start seeping through the cracks,
Seconds later, the pavement collapses in and a huge fireball explodes upwards.
The worker is then knocked from his ladder onto the floor and quickly flees the scene.
Nu newspaper reports that two people were taken to hospital with burn injuries, with it not yet known if the problem has been fixed.
Having been viewed online over 660,000 times on Imgur, many online users were shocked at the accident.
One remarked: “The lifting of the sidewalk right before the event…whoa!”
Another joked: “Portal to hell open for business.”
It isn’t the first time a scary explosion caused chaos, with one lorry being the cause of the accident.
The video shows the lorry driving along w motorway, being filmed by the camera behind.
He has a lot of snow on the top of his lorry, before driving under a bridge.
What happens next thankfully doesn’t cause any injuries.

An explosive epidemic of HIV/AIDs has gripped Russia in recent years, partly with the strength of anti-Western conspiracy theories online that promote the idea that the virus is simply a myth.
Online groups, forums, and chat rooms have repeatedly sprouted up to spew denialism of HIV and AIDS recently—often with thousands of members—according to a new report by the AFP. One group dubbed the virus “the greatest myth of the 20th century,” while calling HIV drugs “poison” and doctors “killers” working to enrich pharmaceutical companies. They coached believers on how to deny treatment. Others claimed the “myth” of AIDS is intended to establish “total control” over the world population.
Meanwhile, Russia has seen steep and consistent increases in rate of new HIV cases in the past decade, even as the rest of the world has seen declines. Since 2006, the rate of new cases in Russia has increased by at least 149 percent and has been steadily increasing by 10 to 15 percent each year. There are now more than 900,000 Russians living with HIV, with 10 new cases reported each hour. About 80 people die from AIDS-related issues each day.

2017 has been a banner year for merger and acquisition activity.
Broadcom is trying to buy Qualcomm for more than $ 100 billion, which would be the biggest tech takeover in history. United Technologies agreed to fork over $ 30 billion for Rockwell Collins back in September. And just this week, Roark Capital, which owns Arby’s, said it will buy Buffalo Wild Wings for about $ 2.9 billion.
The glut of activity has the US M&A market set to clear $ 1 trillion in total dollar value transacted this year, according to data compiled by Robert W. Baird. It would be the fourth straight year it cleared the threshold after six years spent trailing it.
Sounds great right? Well, the investment banking team at Baird says 2018 could be even better, for three main reasons:
The number of private equity-backed companies in the US has surged by more than 30% from 2011 to 2017, growing every year, according to Baird data. The total number is now greater than 7,000.
This is meaningful activity because PE-backed companies are, by nature, more likely to be involved in M&A activity, says Baird. They can function as either buyers or sellers, depending on liquidity conditions and what their PE overlords have in mind for growing their businesses.
PE has also benefited greatly from accommodative lending conditions. With the Federal Reserve only just now starting to tighten its purse strings, firms have had access to loads of cheap capital they’ve then used on M&A activity. And even though the Fed is now tightening and preparing to unwind its massive balance sheet, it will be a gradual process that shouldn’t immediately disrupt debt-raising activities.
While the Chinese government recently took measures to make it more difficult for native entities to do M&A overseas, Baird is confident that outbound deal volume will rebound in 2018. The firm cites its own anecdotal experience in sell-side processes, which suggests that Chinese buyers are still very interested. Still, they seem to have very specific sector preferences.
“We have seen multiple Chinese potential buyers meaningfully participate at high valuation levels, resulting in transactions to Chinese strategic and private equity buyers in the consumer, education and travel sectors,” the firm’s investment banking team wrote.
Further, Baird cites guidelines recently released by the Chinese government that suggest outbound M&A will be encouraged in cases when the opportunities are based on “sound fundamentals and solid strategic logic.”
One side effect of the aforementioned easy lending conditions is that lots of different companies and firms have a lot of money on hand. This drives competition in the M&A space, and leads to higher purchase prices.
Another consideration is that, at this point in the market cycle, some firms may be trying to insulate themselves from an inevitable rough patch.
High valuations will “continue in 2018 as both strategic buyers and PE firms compete for high-growth, mid-market companies and defensive business models that can withstand the next economic downturn, whenever it may be,” said Baird.

The Celtics moved to 16 games unbeaten after a sensational comeback victory over the Mavericks and it was Irving who stole the show.
He missed just one shot in the first half but it looked like Dallas would clinch an unlikely victory after growing their lead to as large as 13 in the fourth quarter.
But the Celtics rallied back with Jayson Tatum levelling the score at 96-96.
Dallas had a chance to win the game with close to the last possession of the game but Harrison Barnes was unable to connect with his jumper, taking the game into overtime.
And Irving took over once more, scoring 10 of Boston’s 12 points to ensure the victory.
Boston fans could be heard chanting MVP towards Irving as he made his way off the court.
And that swiftly transcended into fans on Twitter flooding the social media feed with reasons why they believe he should be MVP.
One fan said: “Why are people not putting Kyrie Irving in the MVP conversation? Kyrie with or without the mask is the reason why the Celtics is on a 16 game winning streak!!!”
While another couldn’t quite contain their excitement: “But my goodness, Kyrie Irving is my MVP currently. The kid just can’t be stopped.”
Home to the largest advertising firm ever assembled, Alphabet is the second most valuable company on the planet, after Apple. But while the Cupertino smartphone-maker has sometimes struggled to maintain the ferocious growth rate of the early iPhone years, Alphabet’s growth is, somewhat ludicrously, accelerating. This quarter’s profit margin was its highest in almost five years, and the company has notched double-digit growth in sales in 15 consecutive quarters.

So, how does Alphabet do it?
Several years ago, there were some concerns about Google’s profitability, as attention shifted to mobile devices, where ads are puny, annoying, and a more measly source of revenue on a cost-per-click basis. Today, cost-per-click is indeed declining. But Google has more than made up for the lost revenue by increasing total clicks on ads in mobile search results and YouTube videos, especially in Asia. While the Alphabet family includes some precocious younger children, like a growing cloud business and the self-driving car division Waymo, Alphabet is basically an advertising company, with nearly 90 percent of its revenue coming from ads.
There are at least two trends that are driving the company’s gains: its utter dominance as the discovery mechanism for information online and the inexorable shift to computers—particularly the ones in our pockets and purses—away from print and television.
The singular corporate innovation of the 21st century has been the creation of discovery platforms that, rather than own their own products, instead control their customers’ discovery of those products. Just as Facebook does not own its content, and Uber does not own its cars, Google does not own the websites it surfaces in the vast majority of search results.
These discovery firms thrive in marketplaces of abundance. In early 1996, as Larry Page and Sergey Brin were developing the web page-ranking technology that became Google, there were about 100,000 websites in the world, according to Walter Isaacson’s The Innovators. Yahoo! and Alta-Vista rejected Page and Brin when they tried to commercialize their work, because, well, search just wasn’t an important functionality in the mid-1990s. Page and Brin’s little science project would only become truly lucrative if the Internet somehow became a labyrinthine enormity—perhaps one million web pages! or 10 million!—so that the search engine itself would become the default homepage of the Internet.
The bigger the web grows, the more valuable Google becomes. And, with more than one billion websites in the world and more than 4 billion people with regular access to the Internet, finding your needle in that haystack is the fundamental problem of Internet use. As the tech writer Ben Thompson wrote, “Google is the king of aggregators because, when information shifted from scarcity to abundance, discovery became the point of leverage, and Google was better at discovery than anyone.”
Second, the migration of attention from print and television to the internet—both desktop and mobile—has created a advertising duopoly for Google and Facebook. As these slides from the last Kleiner Perkins internet presentation show clearly, mobile is the future of media attention and Facebook and Google’s share of digital ad revenue is growing faster than the rest of the industry combined.

Those graphs are for U.S. revenue alone, but the global picture isn’t much more balanced. (In fact, Google’s Asian revenue is growing faster than its North American markets.) According to eMarketer data emailed to me, Facebook’s worldwide digital ad revenue is larger than Alibaba, Baidu, Twitter, Amazon and Snap, combined. And Google? Its global ad business is bigger than all those companies—plus Facebook. The upshot is that Google is, conservatively, eating at least 30 cents of every marginal ad dollar that shifts online.
When a company becomes this dominant, its gravest threat is political, not economic. Indeed, the company recently paid a $ 2.7 billion fine to the European Commission for its treatment of shopping websites in search results. Antitrust experts in the U.S. may similarly punish Google for anticompetitive practices. As a behemoth, Google may eventually attract unwanted attention from government regulators. As a pure business, however, Google appears unstoppable.

The car manufacturer issued an urgent recall last night after a number of cases were reported of airbags going off unexpectedly.
The cause for the faulty airbag is due to a dodgy spring in the steering column.
Mercedes are concerned the clock spring module could break causing the airbag to go off unexpectedly.
Cars built between November 2011 and July 2017 could potentially be affected by the faulty airbag.
Models in Mercedes’ range that are at risk are the A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, E-Class and also some CLA, GLA and GLC cars.
Currently no fatalities have occurred as a result of the exploding airbag but 30 individual cases have been reported on worldwide.
Mercedes is warning customers that if a warning light appears on the dashboard, they should contact their dealership immediately.
Cars are still safe to drive in this period of time and Mercedes will in due course contact owners on how to get them fixed.
The German car giant has stated that it will replace the faulty spring free of charge and the repair will take around an hour to fix.
A Mercedes spokesman said: “If the steering column module clock spring is broken and the wiring components are not earthed, this could lead to an electrostatic discharge which could inadvertently deploy the driver’s airbag.
The airbag issues affecting these cars is said to be an issue that is not related to the Takata airbag scandal.
Millions of vehicles worldwide were recalled over faulty airbags supplied by Takata.
Chat app users can now play Exploding Kittens with Microsoft’s conversational bot Zo, the company announced tody. Exploding Kittens is the first partner game launched through chat with Zo, a Microsoft spokesperson told VentureBeat.
Exploding Kittens with Zo is the first single-player option for the card game that came to life following an $ 8.7 million Kickstarter campaign in 2015. To win the game, all you have to do is avoid drawing an exploding kitten. Cards let you do things like skip your turn to draw a card, shuffle the pile, or defuse an exploding kitten with a catnip sandwich.
To start a game, say “Play EK” when chatting with Zo on Facebook Messenger, Kik, and GroupMe and the game will open in webview.
The ability to play a game is the latest feature to be added for people who chat with Zo to enjoy. Last month Zo gained the ability to insult you, though it’s not the first Microsoft bot that can insult you.
Even before the feature launched, it may not have been the first time Zo insulted you. Zo, a bot that identifies as a 22-year-old woman, launched in December 2016. At launch the bot refused to discuss things like politics or religion, but this summer Zo was caught calling the Qu’ran “very violent” and calling the Microsoft Windows operating system “spyware.”
Zo is one of a series of bots from Microsoft made for the specific purpose of carrying on a conversation, including Rinna, which operates in Japan, and Xiaoice in China. Microsoft’s conversational bots now have more than 100 million users, according to a Microsoft AI blog post.
The Tay bot, also from Microsoft, was killed off in 2016. Less than 24 hours after launching on Kik and Twitter, Tay was shut down for spouting anti-feminist and anti-Semitic opinions. The offensive language occurred because Microsoft allowed the bot’s language to be influenced by the people it interacted with. Analysis after the fact found that people who influenced Tay’s words came from certain sometimes unpleasant groups, according to research manager of Fuse Labs at Microsoft Lili Cheng.
“The kind of gamer trolls were at the core of a lot of the misbehavior, but then we had a lot of anti-feminists, there were a lot of Trump supporters, and then a lot of tech people,” she said.
