Things have been going really well for Chicago P.D.‘s Burgess and Ruzek lately, which begs the question: When will they stop messing around and finally get back together?

In the aftermath of Burgess’ miscarriage last season, the pair have only gotten closer while working through their shared trauma. They hang out together, work together and as Ruzek so expertly observed in the Jan. 13 episode “Tender Age,” they’re basically an old married couple at this point.

A romantic reconciliation seems like the logical next step, so why haven’t they moved forward in their relationship? For Marina Squerciati, who plays Burgess, the not-couple is in too good of a place right now to shake things up.

“What’s keeping them apart is how well they get along,” Squerciati tells TVLine. “Burgess is scared of anything new right now because of this miscarriage and the trauma she suffered, so comfort is the main goal in her life. Just flannel shirts and ice cream on the couch — anything else seems scary. Their biggest problem is they’re too comfortable, and Burgess is really happy right now.”

Patrick John Flueger, who plays Ruzek, thinks the pair is exactly where they need to be at the moment. “I think that it’s an incredibly adult relationship,” he explains. “These are two people that love each other enough to take steps back when they need to, and lean forward when they need to. At the end of the day, they just love each other, and they can’t really escape from that. Right now, [Ruzek and Burgess] feeling each other out and feeling out life works for them really well.”

Though they’ve hit a pretty comfortable routine, there is still the potential for the Intelligence detectives to once again make things official. However, Squerciati says that it’s going to take a lot more than sweet talk for Burgess to want to make that leap again: “Ruzek says a lot of really wonderful things, but I think he needs to do something super romantic or really show up.”

Should Burgess and Ruzek get back together right now? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Horseshoe Bay’s motley crew of amateur sleuths resumed the most important mystery of their lives on Wednesday: How does one stop oneself from being murdered by a vengeful sea spirit? (We said it was important, not relatable.)

Nancy Drew‘s second season premiere picked up right where the CW drama’s truncated freshman finale left off, with Nancy & Co. scrambling to outsmart the Aglaeca, when Detective Tamura arrived with troubling news. A young woman named Amanda Bobbsey was hit by a car in the woods — sorry, make that haunted woods — and the last thing she said before losing consciousness was Nancy’s name. Not good.

Long story short, Amanda and her twin brother Gil (aka the Bobbsey Twins!) were looking for Nancy after seeing a tweet about the Aglaeca from the Drew Crew’s official Twitter account. (Bess had the bright idea to crowdsource their supernatural crisis, bless her heart.) As we would come to learn, the twins allegedly possessed a mirror capable of defeating the troublesome spirit, so the Crew had no choice but to track down Amanda’s missing twin. In a haunted forest. What could possibly go right?

The group’s search brought them to a hunting lodge, where they stumbled upon a shady meeting led by — you guessed it — Nancy’s secret grandfather! After narrowly escaping with their lives (thanks, Ryan!), the gang resumed their search, eventually finding Gil hiding from the forest’s dreaded Midnight Wraith in an abandoned bus. And when their collective positive thoughts fail to defeat the fear-loving wraith, Nancy resorted to plan B: light the damn thing on fire!

After a minor tussle with the authorities, Nancy was eventually released. (Thanks again, Ryan!) Her estranged father also handed over the mirror, which turned out to be much more than just a fancy piece of glass. Hidden beneath the surface was a cryptic message suggesting that the key to defeating the Aglaeca might be… musical? (Sea shanties, they’re not just for TikTok anymore!)

Nancy Drew RecapBelow, executive producers Melinda Hsu Taylor and Noga Landau answer a few of TVLine’s burning questions about the new season:

TVLINE | As I’m sure you fondly remember, the show’s first season was cut short because of the pandemic. How did that affect where you ended things and where you chose to resume the story in Season 2?
Fortunately for us, Episode 18 served as a really great season finale, almost like we planned it — which we definitely did not. [Laughs] But we got to leave people on a great cliffhanger. During the months between the shutdown and when we resumed production, we were on Zoom with the writers figuring out how to move forward. We had four scripts ready to go, which were originally 119, 120, 121 and 122. But 119 didn’t feel like a season premiere, because it wasn’t designed to be one. So we put together what we call 118.5, which takes place in the six hours between the end of 118 and the beginning of 119. We picked up directly with Nancy and the Crew’s visions, and we inserted a new mystery to forward the supernatural investigation and introduce the Bobbsey Twins.

TVLINE | It definitely felt like no time had passed.
We love reminding people that the timeline of the show is very compressed. In Nancy’s world, it was only a week ago tops that she found out she’s Lucy Sable’s daughter. So we’re still in October 2019. And Season 2 only takes place over six weeks, so we will never get to the pandemic in Nancy Drew. We will never, ever have people in face masks on screen on Nancy Drew. (Editor’s note: Thank. Goodness.)

TVLINE | Nancy’s panic attack on the bus suggests that she’s experiencing a bit of an identity crisis. Is that something she’ll explore this season?
That’s really what the season is about for Nancy. It’s hard to be a 19-year-old anyway, figuring out who you are and what you want to do with your life. On top of everything else, she has to reckon with the fact that her parents basically kidnapped her and raised her as their own. And they didn’t tell her that she’s actually from a family of troublesome billionaires who sometimes murder people. She has to figure out who she is. And there’s a lot of nature vs. nurture conflict this season. She starts to worry that she’s more like the Hudsons, as opposed to the Drews, who were always her moral compass.

TVLINE | I also enjoyed Carson and Ryan’s little face-off. Should we expect more friction between them?
Yes, but they’ll also kind of form a bond over time, over the shared desire for Nancy’s wellbeing. I think the odd-couple nature of that relationship is so fun. You’ll see them get to their own détente over the first few episodes. Carson has a lot of atoning to do and wants to rebuild his relationship with Nancy, and Ryan needs a role model for how to be a dad and a grownup. The three of them are one of the most fun triangles on the show, Nancy is not having it from either.

TVLINE | Nick and George are clearly very nervous about telling Nancy that they’re together. Considering everything else she has going on, will she really care that much?
Well, it always stings when that happens. Something I love about our show is that the three girls are always very tight and loyal to one another. That makes it even more bittersweet that George is now the one falling in love with Nick. Nancy wants her friend to be happy, but it also hurts, and Nancy is the type of character who tries to bury that hurt. It will pop up later on in the season. We were just so excited to pursue this romance, which is something that never would have happened in the original canon.

Dan Walker leaves Matt Hancock red-faced over embarrassing error ‘Explain yourself’ https://briefnews.eu/dan-walker-leaves-matt-hancock-red-faced-over-embarrassing-error-explain-yourself/ https://briefnews.eu/dan-walker-leaves-matt-hancock-red-faced-over-embarrassing-error-explain-yourself/#respond Wed, 17 Jun 2020 09:36:04 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/dan-walker-leaves-matt-hancock-red-faced-over-embarrassing-error-explain-yourself/

Dan Walker, 43, and his co-host Naga Munchetty, 45, were joined on today’s edition of BBC Breakfast by Matt Hancock, 41, to discuss the latest headlines from the political sphere. With Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, 22, leading the news agenda today after the government made a U-turn on free school meals for school children in light of his campaign, the Health Secretary was grilled about the action taken. However, towards the end of the interview, the BBC news host left the politician rather embarrassed as he asked him about an error he had made in a previous television appearance where he called the footballer by a completely different name.

It was previously in doubt whether a £12 million voucher scheme would be given the go-ahead to provide millions of school children with free school meals over the summers as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Rashford was poignant in seeing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, 55, give the green light to the scheme and Hancock has been questioned all morning on the government’s U-turn.

Speaking on Sky News this morning, the Health Secretary said the decision came after “Daniel Rashford” had a one-to-one conversation with the Conservative leader on the phone.

The politician was quickly called out by viewers on his error, with Walker giving the platform for him to explain what happened at the end of their interview.

The presenter said: “Before I let you go, I know your job is a difficult one to come on this morning and to do all these live interviews.

“I’m sure you’re aware already Daniel Rashford is trending on social media because you called Marcus…” Walker tried to continue as Hancock burst into nervous laughter.

“Do you want to try and explain yourself because I think you’re probably going to have to talk about this at some stage,” the host added.

“I can’t. Of course, I know he’s called Marcus Rashford,” the politician explained as Walker laughed off the embarrassing gaffe.

“I think he’s getting a bit of grief for it, but it is early,” Walker said, defending the Health Secretary over his error.

Munchetty added: “The amount of grief, I know you do, I do, for getting people’s name wrong. He will absolutely slapping himself on the head.”

The host told his colleague she even got someone’s name wrong earlier on in the show, to which she admitted she does it “all the time”.

“You kick yourself, but then in that position, it’s all for the world to see,” the BBC presenter remarked.

Former football and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, 59, has already taken to social media to call out the politician.

In view of his 7.5 million followers, he wrote in response to Hancock’s Sky interview: “Morning Daniel!

“Good to see Matt Hancock finally giving credit to footballers and Daniel Rashford in particular,” he added.

Rashford replied to the television personality: “I’ve been called much worse over the last couple of days.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

  • Jayme Closs, 13, has been found alive in rural Wisconsin nearly three months after a man allegedly murdered her parents and kidnapped her.
  • Former kidnapping victims Elizabeth Smart and Katie Beers said Jayme has a long, challenging healing process ahead of her.
  • They said the best way for people to handle Jayme is to give her time and space to discuss her trauma on her own terms.

CHICAGO (AP) — Katie Beers’ joy quickly turned to deep concern when she learned 13-year-old Jayme Closs had been found alive in rural Wisconsin nearly three months after police say a man shot and killed her parents then abducted the girl from their home.

“She is going to have to grieve the loss of her parents and also come to terms with the fact she was abducted, escaped and whatever (other) hell she went through,” said Beers. “And it’s not going to be easy.”

The fastball is, as its name implies, the fastest pitch in major league baseball, reaching speeds in excess of 100 MPH, and ideally arriving at the strike zone before the batter can react. Sometimes those fastballs make an unexpected twist that can make or break the outcome of a game. What accounts for differences between pitches? It all comes down to spin speed, spin axis, and the orientation of the ball.

So says Barton Smith, a mechanical and aerospace engineer (and staunch baseball fan) at Utah State University. He studies the complicated physics of how a pitcher’s biomechanics can influence the air dynamics of a baseball. Smith presented his findings earlier this week at a meeting of the American Physical Society’s Division of Fluid Dynamics in Atlanta, Georgia.

There’s some colorful history to the study of baseball pitches, most notably the heated debate in the 1940s and 1950s around whether a curve ball really does curve, or whether it’s just a trick of perception. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dizzy Dean had this to say to skeptics: “Ball can’t curve? Shucks, get behind a tree and I’ll hit you with an optical illusion.” Dean was right. Curve balls really curve—and we know why in part because of research in the 1950s by Lyman Briggs, a former director of the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD).

‘Explain this censorship’: Facebook removes Guardian writer’s video on British colonial crimes https://briefnews.eu/explain-this-censorship-facebook-removes-guardian-writers-video-on-british-colonial-crimes/ https://briefnews.eu/explain-this-censorship-facebook-removes-guardian-writers-video-on-british-colonial-crimes/#respond Wed, 17 Oct 2018 13:58:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/explain-this-censorship-facebook-removes-guardian-writers-video-on-british-colonial-crimes/

Guardian columnist George Monbiot is the latest to decry Facebook’s increased censorship after a video he made, on the crimes of European colonialism, was taken down by the tech giant.

In his tweet, following the removal of the video Monbiot wrote: “Here’s our video about the airbrushing of colonial history, that @facebook has gone and airbrushed.”

The video, produced by Double Down News, shows Monbiot talking to the camera, and is intercut with often gruesome film clips, as he goes through colonial history detailing atrocities committed by Europeans.

The journalist tweeted that he had not received an “explanation or a right of appeal.” Going on to implore fellow journalists Owen Jones, Medhi Hassan, left-wing publication Novara Media and activist Peter Tatchell to retweet his video.

Monbiot’s video initially looks at the crimes of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus – namely his massacre and torture of natives on Hispaniola, modern day Haiti and Dominican Republic, in the late 15th century.

The video also covers the “British manufactured famine” which led to an estimated “at least 12 million deaths” in India. Monbiot states that Indians were driven into work camps, “where the inmates received the same rations as the inmates in [Nazi concentration camp] Buchenwald and where there was a 94 percent death rate per year.”

The journalist, known for his environmentalism, goes on to detail Britain’s more recent crimes of colonialism, focusing on the torture and internment in concentration camps of Kenya’s Kikuyu people. The Guardian writer details the gruesome torture methods, including castration, used by the British against Kenyans, adding that the papers documenting the crimes were burned.

In 2012, Mau Mau representatives, an anti-colonist military force predominantly made up of Kikuyu, sued the UK. The British government, in a rare legal victory for former subjects of the British Empire, accepted that prisoners had suffered “torture and ill-treatment at the hands of the colonial administration.”

Monbiot decries that the actoricities of colonialism have been “completely airbrushed from our national consciousness.”

The video comes amid fierce debate over Britain’s colonial legacy, with many talking up the benefits of the empire, while others, like Monbiot, are arguing that Britain needs to come to terms with its colonial era crimes.

Trump takes a minute to explain the obvious: It's the president's job to talk to foreign leaders https://briefnews.eu/trump-takes-a-minute-to-explain-the-obvious-its-the-presidents-job-to-talk-to-foreign-leaders/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-takes-a-minute-to-explain-the-obvious-its-the-presidents-job-to-talk-to-foreign-leaders/#respond Sat, 18 Aug 2018 23:57:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-takes-a-minute-to-explain-the-obvious-its-the-presidents-job-to-talk-to-foreign-leaders/

Apparently seeking once again to dispel his opponents’ scorn over his diplomatic practices, US President Donald Trump has tweeted out a video address. In it, he explains that world leaders sometimes meet and it’s a good thing.

It takes Trump just under a minute to state something that only needs spelling out in the craziness that is the current American politics: World leaders talk to each other. It’s called diplomacy.

“Many people have asked it, why do I meet with foreign leaders, why do I even waste my time. The fact is, it’s very important,” Trump says. “You have nothing to lose and you have a lot to gain.”

He then brings up the two recent diplomatic efforts that have incensed his opponents the most: the June 12 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore, and the July 16 meeting with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. The latter in particular caused a veritable storm in both Democrat and some Republican ranks, earning Trump the title of “traitor” for his refusal to call Putin out on what the #Resistance claims was Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election and American democracy as a whole.

The meeting with Kim was comparatively well-received, with some hailing it as a milestone effort for peace in the Korean peninsula – though most of the work had arguably been done at the earlier meeting between Kim and his South Korean counterpart. Still, resisters are placing Kim and Putin in the same line of “murderous dictators.” The comments under the video are, unsurprisingly, mostly insults and calls to resign.

Trump wraps up by repeating what’s becoming a trademark phrase of his, again stating what should be obvious: engaging in diplomacy “is a good thing, not a bad thing.” He then adds, “especially if your president knows what he’s doing.”

‘I want my daughter to have a future’: Returning Syrian refugees explain urge to come back home https://briefnews.eu/i-want-my-daughter-to-have-a-future-returning-syrian-refugees-explain-urge-to-come-back-home/ https://briefnews.eu/i-want-my-daughter-to-have-a-future-returning-syrian-refugees-explain-urge-to-come-back-home/#respond Tue, 07 Aug 2018 19:35:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/i-want-my-daughter-to-have-a-future-returning-syrian-refugees-explain-urge-to-come-back-home/

As the Syrian Army moves closer to regaining control over the last remaining militant-occupied areas, a growing number of refugees are returning to begin rebuilding their lives. RT asked some of them why they are coming home.

Between January and October of last year, 700,000 Syrians returned home from abroad, according to UN data.

One man who’s already moved back to Aleppo told RT that normality was returning to the city as infrastructure and utilities were being repaired after more than seven years of civil war.

“We opened a shop here,” he said, upon his family’s return to the city. “Thank God the electricity is back and life went back to normal again.”

Another man making the trip from Lebanon by bus said they’re thinking of moving back because it’s become safer.

“Thank God safety and security are back in Syria and Zebiadani. Now we are hopefully returning home,” he said.

Lebanon hosts over one million registered refugees from Syria, with the government suggesting the actual number could be as high at 1.5 million. Unable to work, and facing reluctance by the Lebanese government to set up formalized camps for Syrians, many have longed to return home.

“As for why I am going back… There is no place like home. We were not happy here [in the camp],” the returning Syrian said.

While there is an estimated seven million Syrians still living abroad, at least 1.5 million have expressed a desire to return home, according to data gathered by the Russian Ministry of Defense. This is in contrast with claims in Western mainstream media implying that all Syrian refugees would not want to go back home unless Syrian President Bashar Assad was removed from power.

Instead, the people who fled war seem to be preoccupied with having a better life and education for their children, something their places of refuge can hardly offer. One man currently residing in Jordan said that he wanted his family to return to Syria because of his daughter growing up.

“We want to go back. We want to return to our beloved Syria. I want my daughter to have a future, she doesn’t have it here,” he said.
