Jamie, 47, spoke with This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield, 59, and Holly Willoughby, 39, on Thursday as his autobiography – Me and My Family and the Making of a Footballer – hits the shelves. As well as discussing his own rise to fame, the book also touches on some more personal moments from his life, including his relationship with his father and football manager, Harry Redknapp, 73. The Sky Sports pundit opened up on the ITV show about how he and his mother Sandra Harris reacted to the news their loved one had been involved in a car crash which claimed the lives of four people.

At the time, Harry and his West Ham teammate Brian Tiler had travelled to Italy to watch the Italia 90 World Cup.

Following one of the games, the pair were travelling back to their accommodation when their vehicle collided with another car.

Unfortunately, Brian – who was driving the car – died at the scene along with three young Italian men, and Harry survived the tragedy.

Jamie was only a teenager at the time and when asked about his father’s heartbreaking ordeal, the former footballer admitted his mother was worried all night her husband hadn’t called her.

“It was one of the most difficult times of my life. He’s not just my dad, he’s my best friend,” the sports pundit said.

The father-of-two explained he was walking his mother back home after she spent the night babysitting for a neighbour.

“She said something’s not right,” Jamie recalled, reassuring Sandra her husband would call in the morning.

However, he said when the call did come, they were informed Harry was alive but had suffered injuries, whilst his best friend Brian had died.

“He was very fortunate to be alive,” the former footballer remarked, explaining his father had suffered from a broken leg and fractured skull.

Harry had spoken about the night in question in his own autobiography ahead of his stint on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! in 2018.

The former football manager said of the moment he realised how close he came to death: “The emergency services at the scene of the crash had apparently thought I was a goner and pulled a blanket over my head.

“The doctors, I’m told, also thought I was dead upon arrival at the hospital.

“But I was lucky. I had fractured my skull, broken several bones, and suffered a horrific gash to my leg, but I don’t think the injuries, though serious, were ever life-threatening, despite those first impressions.”

Taking to Twitter, those watching at home commented on Jamie speaking so candidly about his family’s past on the show.

One viewer wrote: “Jamie Redknapp – comes across as a decent bloke. Pretty good footballer back in the day also. #ThisMorning.”

Another added on the social media platform: “What a lovely family the Redknapps are, Jamie is so nice #ThisMorning.”

Whilst a third commented: “#ThisMorning Walk in and Jamie Redknapp is on tv. Winner,” a fourth posted: “Jamie is such a handsome fella. #thismorning.”

Writer/director/podcaster Kevin Smith has visited J.J. Abrams‘ Star Wars Episode 9 set, and he hated every second of it. “It was dumb,” Smith said of the set. “I looked around, shrugged my shoulders, and said, ‘This is the best you got?’ I interrupted J.J. in the middle of a take and just said, ‘Hey man, thanks for the invite, but this sucks. I’m outta here.’”

I’m kidding, of course. Smith, as rabid a Star Wars fan as you’ll ever find, brought back several tidbits from his travels to the film’s London set, and they’re all overwhelmingly positive – including how he witnessed a performance that drove him to tears. Watch him recount his visit in a video below.

Kevin Smith’s Star Wars Episode 9 Set Visit

Smith was a guest on Good Morning America and regaled the hosts with tales of his travels to a galaxy far, far away. In case you can’t watch the video above, I’ll transcribe his relevant quotes:

“Number one, J.J.’s doing the Lord’s work, man. This movie looks fantastic. It’s a year away, but man it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I’ve seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I’ve ever seen in my life. The dude’s not directing a movie, it’s like he’s directing a small country. The thing is so massive.”

Smith says he saw two scenes being filmed, one of which was “absolutely amazing,” and says he overheard plot details while he was there – but of course, he couldn’t reveal what those details might be.

Since we’re legally bound by Internet Law to speculate about every single element of Star Wars news, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, let’s talk about which actor may have driven Smith to tears on the set. Could it have been Mark Hamill? Does his Force ghost get a powerful close-up moment that could have sent Smith over the edge? It doesn’t seem likely that it was any of the younger cast members, because their careers are still relatively fresh. If I were to bet money on this, I’d put all of my chips on Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. Audiences haven’t seen Williams as the live-action Lando since 1983’s Return of the Jedi, so it makes sense that Smith might get caught up in the emotion of seeing him return.

Smith always has exceptionally nice things to say about the productions he visits, so keep that in mind when digesting his comments here. He also visited the set of The Force Awakens and admitted to breaking down into tears on that set as well, and StarWarsUnderworld reminds us that Smith actually lent his voice to one of the Stormtroopers during post-production on that movie.

Star Wars: Episode 9 hits theaters on December 20, 2019.

Don H writes in “Did you now VUDU has been doing this for quite some time now?  I’m not sure how long, but I found old marketing e-mails from them going back to March 2017 offering free TV shows with ads. They have over a 1000 movies and TV shows to choose from and they change up the selection monthly.”  
  • Peter asked for TV show recommendations, here are some of the responses:
    • Jacob Chandler Mississippi: “Hey Peter, I heard you were looking for a new show to watch and you have a list of criteria for what kind of show you want it to be. I’m not sure if this show meets all the criteria but it’s definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already. I would highly recommend looking at Amazon Prime’s Patriot. It’s a dark comedy about a U.S. spy coming to Luxembourg to interfere with the Iranian election. And as generic and uninteresting as that sounds, it is actually one of the better shows in the “sad hitman” genre. It’s really quirky with a very complex plot and a whole lot of ridiculousness somehow wrapped up in a decent emotional struggle. Check out at least the first three episodes and if you don’t like it by then you probably won’t be able to get into it. But I highly recommend it.  Love the show”
    • Matt Y: “Long time listener, first time writer as they say. Love the show! Last week you guys discussed super hero one-offs and a couple of other examples of one of style shows like Black Mirror. I wanted to recommend that you check out an episode or two of Room 104 on HBO. The first season from the Duplas brothers was zainey and unexpected.  Each half hour episode takes place in the same nondescript motel room. The era, visitors, and metaphysical rules are always different. The first season episodes split pretty evenly into a third of the episodes as junk, another third as a “good sit”, and a third of truly inspired story telling. I’d recommend you check out episodes 2 (Pizza Boy), 5 (The Internet), and 7 (The Missionaries). Season two is three episodes in and they have all been great! Last night Michael Shannon played a Russian diplomat who sets up a date with a woman he met on the Internet, played by Judy Greer. You don’t get these strange stories anywhere else! Anyways, have a great weekend.”
    • Fred from Chattanooga,TN says “Of course you may have seen all of these but I thought I’d throw a few out there that I really like and these could keep you busy for a little while  Six Feet Under The Shield The Knick – the show was directed by Stephen Soderbergh and is fantastic. So underrated Banshee – another fantastic show that not a lot of people talk about  Mad Men, The Leftovers, Deadwood.”
    • Roger writes in: “you might want to check out one of the greatest sci fi shows of all time!!! babylon 5!!! it’s free on amazon prime.  the first season is a tad a slow build, but it’s just incredible. You might also want to check out misfits , it’s on hulu right now”
    • Sean from Missouri writes in “Hey Peter, I thought I might suggest the X-Files or Gilmore Girls for shows with a decent amount of seasons that you could watch if you haven’t seen those yet. I guess there’s also the various Star Trek series which have a lot of seasons if you put them all together. Hope that helps!”
    • Errol L writes in “Hey Peter! Errol from LA. Looking for some binge worthy completed shows? Well strap in!  
      • Banshee is my first suggestion. I would argue it’s the greatest action television show ever made. The fight scenes throughout this show get progressively more insane and unbelievable in all the best ways. The only thing I’ll say is you just need to get over the initial premise, and if you can do that you will have so much fun with this show, and the final season (not only was chosen to end by the creator instead of being cancelled) brings everything home in truly the best way it all can.  
      • Rectify is another option if you’re open to a bit of a slow burn that will literally make you cry every episode, and not for the reasons that Parenthood or This is Us do. The dialogue and the uniqueness of the main character makes this show very much worth the time to invest.  
      • Man Seeking Woman. Hilarious and unique sketch type show that also is able to tied together a coherent story from season to season and again I feel the way they choose to end the show is just perfect   Those are my top 3, at least of current shows. Hope you check em out and can’t wait to hear you talk about how awesome Lucas Hood and Kai Proctor are!”
    • Peter Freeman from Gainesville, VA writes in “You mentioned you were looking for a suggestion for a serialized TV show. Have you tried Person of Interest. This show ran 5 seasons and stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson. Jonathan Nolan was the show runner   The first season initially was procedural with an over arching storyline but by season two it became a full blown serialized show. I believe it’s available on Netflix.“
    • Amber-T writes in “In terms of shows with lots of seasons that are available and fun to watch… (and you’re right, I don’t know what you’ve seen)  The Good Wife, The West Wing, Doctor Who, 30 Rock, Parks & Recreation, Mad Men, Supernatural, Friday Night Lights.  I also recently watched an indie horror film called Sick For Toys that’s super dark and weird, about a brother who kidnaps a guy for his sister for her present every Christmas. Deals with a lot of #metoo stuff without being too on the nose. Flew really under the radar, but worth checking out.”

You asked for film related questions on a recent podcast.  I’m wondering what the best movie going experiences you can recommend when it comes to visually enjoying a film.   Super large screens really don’t matter much to me, I feel like I can always sit closer if I want everything projected large. It’s mainly about contrast, color, clarity and deep blacks and overall brightness.  Are the premium offerings from standard digital projection really worth it when it comes to the visuals? Skyroam Solis was probably the number one most helpful thing I packed. It’s a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that offers unlimited 4G LTE service without having to worry about cell data overages or big fees. The device itself is $ 149.99 on Amazon and the Skyroam “day passes” for wifi are $ 40 for 5 days ($ 8 per day). For the $ 8 per day, you can hook up to five devices at a time to the Solis. If you’re traveling with family or friends, that means that one day pass will cover everyone’s data for the day. Over our five-day trip, it worked almost flawlessly.

Part of the joy of international travel is not always having wifi, but we really only used it for necessities like Google Maps and looking up more information on the sights we were enjoying. It allows you the considerable luxury of being flexible with your choices, and can save a closed restaurant, museum, or unfortunate turn of events from ruining your day.

Yet travel is the hard wall into which such assertions slam—and slide limply to the ground. When you’re off home turf, you don’t get to reframe how safety is perceived. Your priority is to stay safe. To this end, the Australian government’s advisory service, Smart Traveler, offers 2,000 words of advice; upwards of 50 tips for female travelers, specifically.

The tips are hard to flaw. It probably is smart to “act as if someone is expecting you” or “wear a wedding ring”. Smarter still to “avoid taking a room on the ground floor”, “make sure the telephone works”, check the “peephole, deadbolt or chain lock” and “use a door wedge”. And while you’re at it, “sit in train compartments with other women”, “check in using only your initial and surname”, “increase your privacy settings on social media” and avoid eye contact with men or sitting in the front seat because “it can be misinterpreted as a sexual advance”.

But such advice puts the exhausting onus on women to “avoid” being raped, groped, harassed, catcalled or even noticed, instead of on the perpetrators—usually, men. Implicit in each tip is that bad things happen because of something you have, or haven’t, done. Ah, the open road!

Running parallel to this story is another story: The Morocco I adored, wrote about rapturously and would visit again in a flash. My trip came at a pretty momentous time in history to be a woman and a feminist, causing me to reflect in a way that wasn’t always comfortable. Yet it also proved a maxim about travel I hold close: That sometimes it gives you what you need, not what you want.
