Serbia has expelled six Croatian football fans who were caught stealing from a gas station near Belgrade while traveling to a game in Bulgaria, also slapping them with three-year entry bans. The Hajduk Split fans were arrested last week for stealing beer, cigarettes and toys from the station near Belgrade while part of a group making their way to watch a UEFA Europa League qualification game against Slavia Sofia, AP reports. READ MORE: Two Croatian fans stabbed in Glasgow before Europa League game Serbian media also showed pictures of the fan group’s name, Torcida, written on a wall at the gas station along with a ‘U’ sign associated with the World War II pro-Nazi “Ustasha” fighters. Police detained 28 fans as they were returning from the game. A further 14 supporters received 15-day jail terms and one-year entry bans, while others were fined for smaller offenses, according to AP. Anders Aslund’s deep knowledge of Eastern European politics was no match for April Fool’s, when the supposedly all-knowing Russia commentator fruitlessly cheered fake news about Belarus expelling Russian diplomats. Aslund, who was presented by the American think tank the Atlantic Council as a “leading specialist” on Russian economic policy and Eastern Europe in general, has been featured on the BBC, CNN and the Washington Post as a commentator on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s administration. READ MORE: As real as the Yeti – Western propaganda tries to invent Siberian Nationalism In 1999, he predicted the imminent collapse of Russia (something he is still waiting for). Now, in 2018, Aslund appears to have been left slightly red-faced after he provided online commentary on a breaking news prank regarding further expulsions for Russian diplomats. The prank was carried out by Martin Kragh, of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, who tweeted: “Breaking: Belarus expels 5 Russian diplomats in solidarity with the UK. ‘Russia is on the wrong side of history,’ says [President Aleksandr] Lukashenko.” Aslund even commentated on the ‘development,’ stating that it revealed how Putin had “profoundly” isolated his country. “This is not ‘Global Russia’ but Russia alone,” he added. Kragh later revealed his tweet to be a prank by alluding to the date it was posted – April 1st – a day for playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. It shows what westerners want to believe — brian g (@bodhibrian) April 1, 2018 While Minsk and Moscow have recently locked horns over a temporary milk produce export ban, the two comprise a Union State, making the idea of expelling diplomats somewhat awkward. The decision to cut the permanent size of the Russian mission from a maximum size of 30 to 20 people was a “clear message to Russia that there are costs and consequences for its unacceptable and dangerous pattern of behavior,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said following a meeting with NATO allies in Brussels. He went on to accuse Russia of having a “lack of constructive response” to the incident.
Led by the UK, a number of European countries and the US have accused Moscow of the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, earlier in March. No solid evidence has been presented, but this has not stopped some from severing diplomatic ties with Russia, which has denied playing any role and has offered its full support in the investigation.
The secretary-general stated that NATO’s decision to expel and deny accreditation to Russian diplomats “does not change NATO’s policy towards Russia.” He said the alliance “remains committed to a dual-track approach of strong defense and openness to dialogue, including by working to prepare the next meeting of the NATO-Russia Council.”
However, speaking to Sputnik following Stoltenberg’s statement, a source within the Foreign Ministry said the step “very much narrows the possibilities for starting such a dialogue [between Moscow and the alliance] which is now urgently needed in the current difficult situation with security in Europe.”
This is not the first time the NATO head has come out to the press with a barrage of tough words targeting Moscow, giving examples of Russia’s wrongdoings, but failing to provide evidence.
Stoltenberg’s statement came just one day after the US, more than half of the EU’s member states, other European countries, and Canada announced they would be expelling diplomats over the Skripal case. But as certain countries continue to point the finger at Russia, others are keeping a more level head, realizing that no evidence has been presented that proves Moscow was responsible.
Austria stated that it would not be expelling any Russian diplomats, with Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl saying on Tuesday that Vienna wants “to keep the channels of communication to Russia open.”
Switzerland also stated on Tuesday that it would wait for the results of the investigation before taking any action. Slovakia also said it would not be taking any steps to expel diplomats currently, but that it was summoning the Russian ambassador “without delay,” adding that the development of the situation would influence the country’s next steps.
Moscow, for its part, has said it will not let the provocative acts against Russian diplomats go unanswered, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday. It accused the countries that expelled the diplomats of taking a “prejudiced, biased, and hypocritical stance” in the “absence of explanations of what happened and refusing to engage in substantive cooperation.”

Russia has demanded that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) take concrete steps to ensure press freedom in Latvia, after the Baltic state deported a Russian documentary maker without explanation.
“We hope you will immediately take measures within your mandate to change this approach of Latvia authorities towards Russian journalists. Declarations are not enough, actions are highly needed,” tweeted the Russian foreign ministry Friday night, in response to an OSCE statement published earlier.

Olga Kurlaeva, a documentary maker for Russian state television company VGTRK, was this week placed under guard, taken to a deportation center, had her visa annulled, and then whisked to the Russian-Latvian border and set free on the other side in the middle of the night. Her husband, Anatoly, also a journalist, was deported along with her.
Harlem Desir, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, wrote in an open letter to Riga that “Free access to information and free flow of information between the participating States contribute to the freedom of the media in the OSCE region and are an essential part of the broad concept of security on which the organization is based.”
“That’s why I call on the authorities to reconsider the use of restrictive and selective measures in relation to foreign journalists who pursue their professional activities,” continued the text, which has been published on the OSCE website. Desir expressed particular alarm as “the reasoning for such restrictive actions in both cases lacks transparency and remains unclear.”
Previously, the Russian foreign ministry appealed to the OSCE to resolve the situation before it spirals out of control, with Moscow warning it would have to resort to “retaliatory measures.”
Latvian authorities said it’s their right not to explain their decision in a public statement, and asked Brussels to cancel Kurlaeva’s Schengen Area multiple entry visa.
The journalist said she had been treated well by security personnel but was given no explanation about the decision, other than that “it came from above.” She has produced several documentary films criticizing Baltic politicians and the treatment of Russian-speaking minorities in the former Soviet Republics. She was conducting filmed interviews on a legal visa when she was detained and deported.

The fall-out around disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein continues.
The Oscar-winning producer, who was fired from his position at the Weinstein Company following scathing reports of his history of sexual misconduct, was ousted from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences amid troubles with Weinstein’s legal team and the growing number of women accusing him of sexual assault and harassment.
But Weinstein’s downfall isn’t over — Weinstein may yet be expelled from the Television Academy following board discussions that took place two days ago.
As the number of accusers against Harvey Weinstein grow, so do the organizations ousting the ex-mogul. The Motion Picture Academy’s board of governors — which includes powerful Hollywood figures like Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Kathleen Kennedy — voted to strip Weinstein’s Academy lifetime membership on Saturday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Academy released a statement following Weinstein’s expulsion:
“We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over.”
This move, apart from being particularly significant because of Weinstein’s influence on the awards-season campaigns of Oscar-winning movies, is virtually unprecedented for the Academy who have only once expelled a member in its 90-year history: Carmine Caridi, an actor who violated the Academy’s policy of loaning out awards-season screeners.
This calls into question the membership status of other similarly polarizing figures like Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski, both of whom had cases of sexual assault that went to court. For now they maintain their status — though Polanski remains in self-exile in Europe after fleeing charges of raping a 13-year-old girl while Cosby remains exiled from Hollywood’s good graces. However, members of the Academy’s board did question the policy now that they’ve established precedent by expelling Weinstein, THR reported.
Ashley Judd was the first prominent Hollywood actress to go on record in the New York Times report that blew open the doors of sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein two weeks ago. Since then, the allegations have grown to include sexual assault. Three women, including actress Asia Argento, alleged that Weinstein raped them in Ronan Farrow’s New Yorker story, and Rose McGowan — who has been outspoken about Weinstein’s allegations — recently alleged that she was also raped by Weinstein.
On Sunday, another woman came forward to allege that Weinstein sexually harassed her when she was working as a production assistant on Weinstein’s first film, The Burning, in 1980 — making her case the oldest case of Weinstein’s alleged behavior. Buffalo News (via Variety) reported that Weinstein exposed himself to the now 62-year-old Paula Wachowiak when she was working as his intern.
More than 20 women have levied allegations against Weinstein to the New York Times, the New Yorker, or on their social media feeds. Here is the growing list of women who have gone on record (via Variety):
The Television Academy board met Saturday to discuss the ex-mogul’s membership, but there are rumblings that Weinstein — who has been nominated for the Emmys 17 times — will be ousted from this organization as well, according to Deadline.
Most actors and actresses have condemned Weinstein through their social media accounts, though a few figures like Woody Allen — who himself has faced sexual abuse allegations — have taken a lukewarm stance on the situation. Allen called the situation “sad,” but hoped that Weinstein’s allegations don’t “lead to a witch hunt.” The red carpet for Allen’s newest film Wonder Wheel, which was produced by Weinstein, was cancelled this weekend.
Meanwhile, Weinstein’s legal team continues to bleed members with Weinstein firing Charles Harder, his lawyer handling the lawsuit against the New York Times, according to Variety. This follows the exit of attorneys Lisa Bloom and Lanny Davis. The lawsuit has not yet been filed and Harder’s departure casts doubts on whether it will go through at all.
But The Weinstein Company may find salvation as it looks to officially change its name and spring back from financial woes. TWC announced this morning that Colony Capital is looking to buy shares of the company, according to Deadline. One-third of its board resigned following the bombshell New York Times and New Yorker reports against Weinstein, and Bob Weinstein has denied knowledge of his brother’s wrongdoings. The soon-to-be-rebranded Weinstein Company is reportedly still investigating the allegations against Harvey Weinstein.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has expelled Harvey Weinstein following numerous allegations that the powerful Hollywood producer had been sexually harassing women for over three decades. The academy said the vote was “well in excess of the required two-thirds majority to immediately expel him.” The 54-member board, which includes such famous figures as Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Whoopi Goldberg, said they wanted not only to separate themselves “from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues, but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over.” The most famous women among the sea of those claiming harassment at his hands are Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan and Rosanna Arquette. Weinstein, 65, was also accused of rape in several media publications, but denied having non-consensual sex with anyone.

WASHINGTON/HAVANA (Reuters) – The United States said it had expelled two Washington-based Cuban diplomats in May after unspecified “incidents” caused physical symptoms in Americans serving at the US Embassy in Havana that an unnamed official said included hearing loss.
US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters on Wednesday the exact nature of the incidents was unclear, but the Americans serving in Cuba returned to the United States for non life-threatening “medical reasons.”
The United States first learned of the issues at the embassy in late 2016, she said.
“We don’t have any definitive answers about the source or the cause of what we consider to be incidents,” Nauert said. “It’s caused a variety of physical symptoms in these American citizens who work for the US government. We take those incidents very seriously, and there is an investigation currently under way.”
As a result, the United States on May 23 asked two Cuban officials in Washington to leave the country and they have done so, Nauert said.
“What this requires is providing medical examinations to these people,” Nauert said. “Initially, when they’d started reporting what I will just call symptoms, it took time to figure out what it was, and this is still ongoing. So we’re monitoring it.”
A US government official said several colleagues at the US embassy in Havana were evacuated back to the United States for hearing problems and other symptoms over the past six months. Some subsequently got hearing aids, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Washington and Havana re-established diplomatic relations in 2015 after more than five decades of hostilities, re-opening embassies in each other’s capitals and establishing a new chapter of engagement between the former Cold War foes.
President Donald Trump rolled back part of his predecessor Barack Obama’s policy toward Cuba, but has left in place many of the changes, including the re-opened US Embassy in Havana.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert has not elaborated on the nature of the reported incidents or the symptoms, except to say that they were not life threatening and that the matter is under investigation.
The incidents resulted in a “variety of physical symptoms,” prompting some US government personnel to leave the island, Nauert said at the State Department’s press briefing on Wednesday.

She added that the State Department first heard about them in late 2016, and asked the Cuban diplomats in Washington to leave in May, which they did.
While the State Department has refused to publicly give details of the reported incidents, US officials speaking on condition of anonymity told AP that the symptoms that US embassy staffers in Cuba reported included loss of hearing.
Investigators were looking into whether elements of the Cuban government placed sonic devices that produce non-audible sound inside or outside the residences of roughly five US Embassy staffers with the intent of deafening them, AP cited one unnamed official as saying.
The staffers arrived in Havana in the summer of 2016, AP reported. Like all foreign diplomats in Cuba, they lived in housing owned and maintained by the Cuban government.
The affected diplomats and their spouses began to experience symptoms of hearing loss so severe that an investigation was launched, and it was determined that they were at risk, the unnamed officials told AP.
“The Department has reminded the Cuban government of its obligations under the Vienna Convention to protect our diplomats,” Nauert said at the briefing on Wednesday. “The Department is taking these incidents very seriously and is working to determine the cause and impact of the incidents. The Cuban government has assured us that it is also investigating and taking appropriate measures.”
There has been no immediate official reaction from Cuba.
The US and Cuba reestablished diplomatic relations two years ago under then-President Barack Obama.
Washington and Havana had been estranged ever since President John F. Kennedy cut ties with Cuba and imposed an embargo on the island in 1961.
Last year, President Obama traveled to Cuba, looking to warm the long-frozen relations with the Communist-run island.
In June, President Trump said he was reversing “the last administration’s completely one-sided deal with Cuba.”
He reimposed some restrictions on travel to Cuba, but left the newly-established embassies in Washington and Havana open “in the hope that our countries can forge a much stronger and better path,” he said in June, adding that he will “expose the crimes of the Castro regime.”
Cuba fired back, saying: “The United States is not in a position to give us lessons” on human rights, adding that the new restrictions “are doomed to fail, as it was the case in the past.”

France has expelled a radical Swiss Islamist preacher, police escorted Hani Ramadan to the border on Saturday. The French Interior Ministry cited past remarks and behaviors as reason for his expulsion.
The Egyptian-born Swiss Muslim cleric was apprehended on Friday in the town of Colmar, near the German border, where he was participating in a conference. Swissinfo reports that he was then escorted to the French-Swiss border by police.
“Mr. Hani Ramadan is known to have in the past adopted a stance and made remarks that could pose a serious threat to public order on French soil,” the French Interior Ministry said in a statement released Saturday.
“The Interior Ministry and security forces are prepared and will continue to fight relentlessly against extremism and radicalization,” added Interior Minister Matthias Fekl.
Reacting to his expulsion, Ramadan said he would appeal against the decision and called the French government’s statements erroneous and based on a narrow interpretation of his actual views.
Ramadan was formerly the director of the Geneva Islamic Centre. He is the brother of well-known intellectual Tariq Ramadan and the grandson of Hasan al Banna, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Several of Ramadan’s lectures have been canceled in France in the months leading up to his expulsion. In 2002, the Swiss canton of Geneva suspended him from his post as a school teacher following an article he wrote for French newspaper Le Monde, in which he defended the stoning to death of adulterers and suggested that AIDS is a form of divine punishment.
He later won compensation of just over €200,000 for the sacking.
