Just a couple of months after drone sightings grounded flights at one of the UK’s busiest travel hubs, the nation is expanding drone no-fly zones around airports. As of Wednesday, the no-fly radius is widening from one kilometer to five kilometers (around three miles).

In December, drones spotted near Gatwick Airport led to flight operations being shut down for more than a day during the busy holiday travel period. The disruption affected more than a thousand flights and around 140,000 passengers — police have yet to find the perpetrators. Flight activity also stopped for around an hour at Heathrow in January after a drone was sighted nearby. Both airports bought anti-drone systems this year.

Through its upcoming Drones Bill, the government wants give police more power to stamp out drone misuse, including the ability to stop and search people suspected of using them maliciously near airports. If the bill becomes law, it will also grant police the power to access data stored on drones. Those who recklessly endanger flights with drones currently face up to a five-year prison sentence.

Astronomers are engaged in a lively debate over plans to rename one of the laws of physics.

It emerged overnight at the 30th Meeting of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), in Vienna, where members of the general assembly considered a resolution on amending the name of the Hubble Law to the Hubble-Lemaître Law.

The resolution aims to credit the work of the Belgian astronomer Georges Lemaître and his contribution—along with the American astronomer Edwin Hubble—to our understanding of the expansion of the universe.

Expanding ‘chokehold’ on Russia: Analysts to RT on NATO’s plan for new command centers https://briefnews.eu/expanding-chokehold-on-russia-analysts-to-rt-on-natos-plan-for-new-command-centers/ https://briefnews.eu/expanding-chokehold-on-russia-analysts-to-rt-on-natos-plan-for-new-command-centers/#respond Sat, 09 Jun 2018 16:49:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/expanding-chokehold-on-russia-analysts-to-rt-on-natos-plan-for-new-command-centers/ Building two command centers in the US and Germany, NATO is either preparing to take on Russia or executing its “suffocation” strategy against Moscow, military analysts told RT.

“NATO had 33 military commands during the Cold War, but they reduced the number of those commands to seven,” Alexander Bartosh, former Russian diplomat and military expert told RT.

The alliance may be preparing to deploy troops and heavy weaponry from North America to Europe, he alleged, adding it explains the establishment of the new command centers. “This is exactly what the newly formed commands will be dealing with.”

The western military bloc has made no secret of following the goal of “deterring Russia” citing its notorious mantra of perceived “threat” posed by Moscow.

But it’s the US and NATO themselves who “are seeking to create a so-called suffocating ring embracing Russia from the north – namely, the Baltics – and eastern European countries,” Bartosh countered.

The comment came on the heels of news saying NATO has green-lighted putting new command centers in the US and Germany. On Wednesday, NATO Secretary General had announced the bloc’s Joint Force Command for the Atlantic will be based at Norfolk, and the new Enabling Command will be based in the German town of Ulm.

Also in the week, NATO defense ministers approved the so-called ‘Four Thirties’ initiative, said to enable the alliance to mobilize 30 land battalions, 30 Air Force squadrons and 30 warships within 30 days or less.

The military bloc is deploying troops and materiel to Europe to prepare for a future war with Russia, posited Igor Korotchenko, military expert and editor-in-chief of Russia’s National Defense magazine. “They are developing and carrying out relevant plans,” he argued.

The analyst said building two command centers in Norfolk and Ulm has nothing to do with Western militaries trying to get more budget money. “Budget appropriations are fairytales for idiots,” Korotchenko said. “What is really going on is building up military infrastructure and command-and-control facilities aimed at waging war with Russia.”

The US-led alliance boosted its military presence and ramped up the number of drills in Eastern Europe after Moscow’s reunion with Crimea and the beginning of the military conflict in Ukraine in 2014. Moscow has been consistently warning that such a build-up at its doorstep undermines security climate on the European continent.

It has been recently reported that Poland was in favor of paying $ 2bn for permanent presence of US troops in the country. Moscow called the move a “dangerous initiative,” saying that such a deployment jeopardizes regional security and makes Poland “one of the main targets in case of a possible conflict.”

Amazon appears to be expanding its Prime Wardrobe service https://briefnews.eu/amazon-appears-to-be-expanding-its-prime-wardrobe-service/ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-appears-to-be-expanding-its-prime-wardrobe-service/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 05:00:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazon-appears-to-be-expanding-its-prime-wardrobe-service/

Last June, Amazon announced a clothes-by-mail service so Prime customers could try out new apparel without committing to buying it ahead of time. The service has been in beta ever since, but TechCrunch reports that it has now reached more customers. A number of people have tweeted that they have received an invitation to try Prime Wardrobe and an Amazon employee tweeted that the service had officially launched — though that tweet has since been deleted. Additionally, the Twitter account for the University of California, Irvine’s Prime Student Brand Ambassadors encouraged students to try out Prime Wardrobe in a tweet posted yesterday.

Amazon initially denied any change to the ongoing Prime Wardrobe trial, but later told TechCrunch that it had extended the service to more customers. When we reached out to Amazon for more information, we were told that Prime Wardrobe is still in an invitation-only phase.

The service takes on companies like Stitch Fix, Trunk Club and DailyLook Elite that have similar offerings. For Amazon’s version, Prime members can shop through a dedicated Prime Wardrobe selection of apparel and accessories, choosing three to eight items per box. Customers can then try on the items at home, having seven days to make a decision before any unwanted items must be sent back. Currently, Amazon is also offering a deal wherein customers can get $ 20 off if they spend at least $ 200 through Prime Wardrobe.

Unlike Stitch Fix, there isn’t any style personalization with Prime Wardrobe. But Amazon does let you shop by occasion or style and provides suggestions through sections like “Our editors’ top picks” and “Brands we love.” The move makes sense for Amazon, which has been expanding its fashion-focused offerings over the last couple of years. And it could appeal to those who like the try-it-before-you-buy-it aspect of companies like Stitch Fix but don’t want to commit to a monthly subscription.

Swedish CEO: Amazon is expanding to Sweden within 12 months — ‘then we’re all dead’ https://briefnews.eu/swedish-ceo-amazon-is-expanding-to-sweden-within-12-months-then-were-all-dead/ https://briefnews.eu/swedish-ceo-amazon-is-expanding-to-sweden-within-12-months-then-were-all-dead/#respond Wed, 25 Oct 2017 14:51:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/swedish-ceo-amazon-is-expanding-to-sweden-within-12-months-then-were-all-dead/ jeff bezosRichard Brian/Reuters

  • Amazon is rumored to be establishing itself in Sweden soon.
  • Nicklas Storåkers, CEO of comparison site Pricerunner, says that when it happens, no e-commerce players in the country stand a chance.

One of the hottest topics in Swedish e-commerce right now, is when — not if — Amazon will establish itself in the country. Swedish tech site Breakit now reports it will likely happen in the next year.

Breakit cites two sources from the top echelons of Swedish tech, who, citing credible sources, say Amazon is indeed gunning for Swedish e-commerce consumers.

Nicklas Storåkers, the CEO of comparison site Pricerunner and previously CEO of online bank Avanza, cites a “reliable but informal” source, who yesterday confirmed to him that Amazon has decided to launch in Sweden — and very soon.

Storåkers commented the unconfirmed rumors at Retail Tech Stockholm Tuesday.

“You don’t just buy three pieces of real estate in Eskilstuna, Västerås and Katrineholm,” Storåkers said, referring to cloud provider Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) recent investment that effectively established Sweden as one of Amazon’s data “superregions.”

‘All e-commerce players will become slaves under Amazon’

Amazon has this year already opened an AWS office in central Stockholm, in addition to buying the local domain name Amazon.se. Exactly when Amazon would be making its online services available in Sweden Storåkers didn’t want to comment.

“I didn’t get any report about it, but we are counting it happening in the next 1 to 12 months,” Storåkers said, adding that it’s difficult to guess the exact date.

Storåkers pointed out that the arrival of Amazon, the world’s sixth most valuable company, could have major repercussions for the country’s e-commerce scene.

So what happens if Amazon arrives?

“Then we’re all dead. All e-commerce players will become slaves under Amazon, and there will be no space left for us. That’s how you should think,” he said at the event, adding that Amazon today has 40 percent of the U.S. market, with a fifth of them being Prime-customers.

Storåkers believes it will take some time for Amazon to set up a logistics warehouse network; something that could be temporarily aided by distribution from its German operations.

Breakit’s other source is Staffan Mölndal, a partner at Swedish VC firm Verdane Capital, who, like Storåkers, refers to a “credible” source confirming Amazon’s arrival in Sweden.

“It will have different consequences for different players. [But already] share prices have fallen for many [players]. E-commerce companies will see declining valuations,” Mölndal said.

Another tech profile, who is not as pessimistic about Amazon’s likely arrival is Susanne Najafi, the co-founder of investment company Backing Minds.

“[Looking at] the U.K., Germany and Japan, where Amazon has almost as big a footprint as in the U.S., the e-commerce market has not been down-valued,” she said.

Researchers now updating and expanding evolution’s list of 20 amino acids https://briefnews.eu/researchers-now-updating-and-expanding-evolutions-list-of-20-amino-acids/ https://briefnews.eu/researchers-now-updating-and-expanding-evolutions-list-of-20-amino-acids/#respond Thu, 05 Oct 2017 17:50:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/researchers-now-updating-and-expanding-evolutions-list-of-20-amino-acids/

Serine? So last century. Valine? Over it. Glycine? You’ve got to be kidding me.

Those chemicals are part of the 20 amino acids that are typically incorporated into proteins. That means they have a dedicated place in what’s called the genetic code, which translates between the bases of DNA to the amino acids of proteins.

Granted, the genetic code has enabled the entire diversity and complexity of life on Earth, from E. coli to T. rex. But still, researchers are starting to find this kind of limiting. Life has evolved ways of using more than 140 amino acids in proteins; and once we start tinkering with the things, we can make scads more. Just because evolution has done so doesn’t mean we need to rely on only these 20 old boring ones. What follows is a look at how and why we want to engineer artificial amino acids into cells and living organisms.

Walmart is slowly expanding its Uber-powered grocery delivery https://briefnews.eu/walmart-is-slowly-expanding-its-uber-powered-grocery-delivery/ https://briefnews.eu/walmart-is-slowly-expanding-its-uber-powered-grocery-delivery/#respond Mon, 21 Aug 2017 20:52:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/walmart-is-slowly-expanding-its-uber-powered-grocery-delivery/

Walmart has been testing a grocery delivery service since 2013, when it expanded from San Francisco and San Jose to the Denver market. It’s been using ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft to deliver the goods since last year, in Denver and Phoenix. The company is now expanding the delivery service to two new cities: Customers in Dallas or Orlando can now order groceries from Walmart.com and have them delivered via an Uber ride.

The process is pretty simple, which is what you want when you’re grabbing groceries online. You can order online on your desktop or mobile browser, place an order and then arrange a time for delivery. Then Walmart’s “personal shoppers” grab your items, scan them and request an Uber delivery car to come get it from the local Walmart store.

Walmart is testing various ways to get your groceries to you, including deliveries by actual Walmart associates and Walmart trucks and drivers. Still, these are only the third and fourth cities that Walmart has moved into with Uber delivery. That’s a seriously slow roll out, especially as compared to the faster pace shown by Amazon, Target and other retailers.
