Hero pizza for everyone!

TVLine has learned that just days after black-ish premiered its seventh season, ABC has ordered an extra six episodes, bringing this season’s total to 21 — with the possibility for even more to come.

Once again airing on Wednesday nights following a three-season move to Tuesdays, black-ish this week returned to 3.1 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating (in Live+Same Day numbers) — up sharply from its May finale (2.5 mil/0.4) and right on par with its Season 6 average (2.6 mil/0.6). No small feat in #PandemicTimes.

black-ish was originally slotted to return at midseason (which likely dictated its shorter order), but less than 24 hours after ABC unveiled that 2020-21 game plan — and in the midst of so much summertime civil unrest — it was promoted to a proper fall perch. (As a result, Kyra Sedgwick’s Call Your Mother freshman comedy got pushed to midseason.)

As ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke explained back in June, “black-ish has a long-standing history of shining a light on current events and honoring Black voices through the lens of the Johnson family. After speaking with [series creator] Kenya [Barris] and our creative partners, we decided it was important to tell these meaningful stories during this moment in time, so we are adjusting our premiere schedule and are committed to doing whatever it takes to bring this series back as soon as we possibly can.

“Following recent monumental events, it’s imperative that the dialogue continues and empowers viewers to raise their voices,” Burke added, “and there is no other show that does that like black-ish.”

Hulu’s expanded Funimation deal gives it first dibs on anime shows https://briefnews.eu/hulus-expanded-funimation-deal-gives-it-first-dibs-on-anime-shows/ https://briefnews.eu/hulus-expanded-funimation-deal-gives-it-first-dibs-on-anime-shows/#respond Tue, 04 Dec 2018 20:45:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hulus-expanded-funimation-deal-gives-it-first-dibs-on-anime-shows/

Hulu likes to see itself as a go-to source for anime in the US (with certain exceptions), and it just cemented a deal reflecting that. The streaming service has struck an expanded “multi-year” deal with Funimation that gives it more access to desirable shows. It’ll have “first look” at US streaming rights to anime series produced and released by Funimation from 2019 onward, while Hulu and Funimation will be the “co-exclusive” premiere outlets for key subtitled anime titles. You’ll have to subscribe to one or the other if you want access to some shows the same day they launch in Japan.

The fresh deal doesn’t change the two companies’ existing strengths in anime. Both are the only places offering all dubbed and subtitled episodes of shows like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia. Clearly, though, they don’t feel that’s enough — they want to further squeeze rivals like Crunchyroll and become a one-stop shop for Japanese animation.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Gets Expanded Episode Order for Final Season https://briefnews.eu/crazy-ex-girlfriend-gets-expanded-episode-order-for-final-season/ https://briefnews.eu/crazy-ex-girlfriend-gets-expanded-episode-order-for-final-season/#respond Sat, 14 Jul 2018 05:42:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/crazy-ex-girlfriend-gets-expanded-episode-order-for-final-season/

Rebecca Bunch just got a bunch of episodes added to her swan song.

The CW is expanding Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s upcoming fourth and final season to a total of 18 episodes, TVLine has confirmed. That makes Season 4 the show’s biggest since its freshman season, which also had 18 episodes. (Seasons 2 and 3 were 13 episodes each.) The network announced back in May that Season 4 would be the last for Rachel Bloom’s musical rom-com. (SpoilerTV first broke the news of the expanded episode order.)

In case you forgot where we left off: Season 3 of Crazy Ex ended with Rebecca facing a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to the attempted murder of her own unstable ex Trent. That decision has “unintended consequences for her West Covina friends,” per The CW’s official Season 4 description. “Nathaniel feels betrayed by her, Josh is taken aback by her, and Darryl is parenting her baby. Paula, Heather and Valencia remain staunchly by Rebecca’s side but they are busy finding their own identities (as a law student, regional manager and kickass party planner, respectively.)”

Crazy Ex‘s expanded Season 4 kicks off Friday, Oct. 12 at 9/8c. Got predictions for the final season? Drop ’em in a comment below.

McLaren’s expanded eSports program includes mobile racing games https://briefnews.eu/mclarens-expanded-esports-program-includes-mobile-racing-games/ https://briefnews.eu/mclarens-expanded-esports-program-includes-mobile-racing-games/#respond Sun, 08 Jul 2018 05:45:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mclarens-expanded-esports-program-includes-mobile-racing-games/

McLaren is enamored with eSports — so much so that it’s expanding the scope of its program. The 2018 edition of the Shadow Project promises to be more “open and inclusive” than you might expect, letting you compete for virtual motorsports glory not just with die-hard PC racing simulators like iRacing and rFactor 2, but more forgiving experiences like Forza Motorsport on the Xbox One and even a mobile game, Real Racing 3. It may seem counterintuitive for a performance car brand to accept competitors who may only ever play casual titles, but there’s reasoning here — it’s not about the games so much as the intellect involved in playing them.

The automaker noted that one of 2017’s finalists, Danish surgeon Henrik Drue, reached the finals despite never having played a racing game on a console or PC. He forged ahead (even beating some ostensibly more experienced rivals) because of his sharp cognitive skills. McLaren is more interested in someone’s potential than whether or not the game they play is realistic.

There are new sponsors, too, with Alienware and HTC joining Logitech and Sparco. And yes, HTC’s involvement makes clear that VR experience counts.

Shadow’s basic formula will sound familiar. It will start with succession of qualifiers between August and October (starting with iRacing and Real Racing 3), semi-finals and amateur finals in November, and the finals in January 2019. The winner gets a spot in the company’s eSports team and will compete against the “best” in the Sports world, mirroring McLaren’s conventional racing efforts. If you’re interested, details about the scoring system and choice of cars (all McLarens, logically) will be available in the “coming weeks.”

‘UK & US want OPCW powers expanded to justify future attacks against Syria’ https://briefnews.eu/uk-us-want-opcw-powers-expanded-to-justify-future-attacks-against-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-us-want-opcw-powers-expanded-to-justify-future-attacks-against-syria/#respond Wed, 27 Jun 2018 05:12:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-us-want-opcw-powers-expanded-to-justify-future-attacks-against-syria/ London’s effort to empower the UN chemical watchdog with the right to assign guilt serves Western interests in finding loopholes and justifications for new attacks against Damascus, investigative journalist Rick Sterling told RT.

“The UK in alliance with the US is hoping to have the OPCW able to assign blame and provide a rationale for future attacks by the US and the UK,” Sterling believes.

Under Donald Trump’s administration, the US used chemical incidents in Syria as a pretext to stage two nearly instant ‘retaliatory’ strikes against Damascus without due investigation. The UK, as well as France, joined the US-led military endeavor this spring when they bombarded government bases and infrastructure in response to an alleged chemical attack in Douma on April 7. A year earlier, Washington unilaterally launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Shayrat Airbase, as a response to the Khan Shaykhun chemical incident on 4 April 2017.

Moscow has repeatedly criticized the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) for mishandling its probes, cherry-picking evidence and for vague wording in their reports. JIM’s mandate expired last November, following a number of failed attempts by the UNSC to extend its authority.

“One of the problems is that OPCW has not been willing to go to the sites in some cases and they don’t pursue evidence which contradicts the Western claims,” Sterling noted.

Despite repeated failures by OPCW experts to impartially investigate chemical attack claims in Syria –and at times even to visit the sites of an actual alleged incident– an ongoing special conference of the watchdog in the Hague is set to vote on the expansion of its mandate. The proposed new powers would involve the OPCW declaring any party to a conflict responsible for any chemical incident.

“OPCW has assigned blame to the Syrian government in various instances in the past, including chlorine, but if you look at their reports they rely really on witnesses who are provided to them by the opposition. So it is very logical to question the objectivity and the independence of the OPCW,” Sterling told RT. “Even the director of the OPCW is Turkish. And Turkey, of course, is a member of NATO.”

US seeking to turn OPCW into ‘manipulation instrument’ to exert pressure on Syria – Russian MoD

All of the latest OPCW reports were in large part based on open source data, witness testimonies and video and photo evidence provided by select ‘moderate’ rebel groups and controversial NGOs, such as the Syrian Civil Defence (SCD) –better known as the White Helmets– or the US-based Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS). Those same sources by coincidence were instrumental in heating up international public outrage in the buildup for ‘retaliatory’ US-led strikes against Damascus.

“In the last several years we’ve seen a situation in Syria where the efforts of countries to overthrow, to topple the Damascus government have used claims, accusations of chemical weapons usage, and the OPCW have been a part of that,” Sterling believes.

  • China has created a new anti-corruption agency that can investigate any government employee in the country, including managers who work in schools, hospitals, universities, and state-run companies.
  • The National Supervision Commission works outside the court system, and can hold suspects for up to six months without granting access to a lawyer.
  • Corruption has been widespread in China, and can be linked to the concept of ‘guanxi,’ that considers close relationships to be crucial for accomplishing business.
  • But experts say the commission is abusive, and will undermine efforts to thwart corruption and grow the economy.

China has officially established a new anti-corruption agency that can investigate any government official in the country.

Since coming to power in 2012, President Xi Jinping spearheaded an anti-graft crackdown on the 89 million-strong Communist Party. In that time, 1.5 million members have been punished.

The New Expanded Universe: Where to Start with ‘Star Wars’ Comics https://briefnews.eu/the-new-expanded-universe-where-to-start-with-star-wars-comics/ https://briefnews.eu/the-new-expanded-universe-where-to-start-with-star-wars-comics/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 11:08:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-new-expanded-universe-where-to-start-with-star-wars-comics/

Ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, the company has been trying to reinvent the vast, fluid, and beloved Star Wars Expanded Universe. For those of us who loved the EU, it was an upsetting decision, but one that made a whole lot of business sense. Disney is a corporation who likes to control the narrative, so it’s unsurprising that they want to stay on top of the new Star Wars canon.

It’s been six years and Disney has actually done a pretty fantastic job of diversifying and solidifying the greater world of Star Wars outside of the movies, with a huge selection of novels and comics that expand the universe of the new films. It can be a little overwhelming working out where to start, but these fantastic Marvel and IDW comics offer the best possible entry point for the updated Star Wars galaxy.

Star Wars

Jason Aaron, John Cassady, and Laura Martin

The flagship title of the Marvel Star Wars line, this introduction to the new comics continuity saw critical darling Jason Aaron team up with Planetary‘s John Cassady and superstar colorist Laura Martin to take us back to the iconic original trilogy. This first story arc focuses on the classic crew as they battle the Empire after the destruction of the Death Star. This is a perfect entry point for fans of the original movies, as Aaron, Cassaday, and Martin take fans back to the era just after A New Hope and expand on the legends that we all know and love that many of us grew up on.

Darth Vader

Kieron Gillen, Salvador Larocca, and Edgar Delgado

Everyone loves a villain. In main Star Wars canon, there are none more villainous than Darth Vader and this is one of the standout series from the new line of comics. Taking place directly after A New Hope, this story follows Vader attempting to come to terms with Palpatine’s Machiavellian acts whilst also seeking a very personal vengeance on the Rebels who destroyed the Death Star. Salvador Larocca and Kieron Gillen craft a great story for Dark Side fans, especially those who always wondered why the little boy who was so great at making droids never really bothered to do that after becoming Vader.

Obi-Wan & Anakin

Charles Soule, Marco Checchetto, and Andres Jose Mossa

This miniseries takes readers back to the years following The Phantom Menace, before best two friends became fierce foes. If you’re a fan of the Master/Padawan relationship, this is the comic for you. Exploring Obi-Wan and Anakin’s friendship as it’s tested during a routine mission to a remote planet, this book is heartbreaking for audiences who know just where these two men will end up. An exciting and fully contained story, this is a great comic for anyone who loves Star-Lore, as well as a fantastic entry point to the greater Star Wars canon.

Princess Leia

Mark Waid, Terry & Rachel Dodson, and Jordie Bellaire

Though we long to see the day that a woman is allowed to write a Princess Leia book – check out the Forces of Destiny and Star Wars Adventures entries below for women writing Star Wars books – this is a fun and adventurous book, with the fantastic Rachel Dodson on inks. This five-issue miniseries follows everyone’s favorite Princess as she deals with the destruction of her home planet of Alderaan and attempts to find other survivors like her around the galaxy. The creative team does a great job of creating a portrait of a young woman fighting to preserve her culture and heritage against the background of an expansive galactic war.

Chewbacca

Gerry Duggan and Phil Noto

This is one of the most fun and inventive of the Star Wars comics. It’s always a joy to see creators work out how to tell a story where the main character doesn’t speak in anything but roars. Duggan and Noto do a great job of creating a world that revolves around Chewie without ever making him stray from his mother tongue of Shyriiwook. The story focuses on Chewie helping a young girl named Zarro, who has escaped from a slave colony and enlists the Millennium Falcon co-pilot to help free her people. It’s an accessible action comic that’s perfect for fans of the famous furry one.

Humans expanded out of Africa 40,000 years earlier than we thought https://briefnews.eu/humans-expanded-out-of-africa-40000-years-earlier-than-we-thought/ https://briefnews.eu/humans-expanded-out-of-africa-40000-years-earlier-than-we-thought/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2018 12:00:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/humans-expanded-out-of-africa-40000-years-earlier-than-we-thought/

There’s not much left of this person who lived and died in a cave on the slopes of Israel’s Mt. Carmel between 177,000 and 194,000 years ago. All that remains is the left half of an upper jaw, with some fragments of palate, cheekbone, and the floor of the nasal cavity still attached, along with a complete set of upper left teeth. But those fragments of bone mean that modern humans probably found their way to southwest Asia about 40,000 to 50,000 years earlier than fossil evidence previously suggested.

For early humans, the Levant was the gateway to everything beyond Africa. When the newly discovered fossil human, dubbed Misliya-1, and its companions arrived in the area, they would have found themselves living alongside Neanderthals. Both species were living in spaces once occupied by Homo erectus, an early human ancestor that had reached southern Eurasia by 1.75 million years ago. Understanding which species lived here—and when—is crucial to reconstructing the story of our ancestors’ expansion.

Who, where, and when

And the Misliya-1 fossil is definitely human, not Neanderthal or an early hominin like Homo erectus. The shape of the jaw and the nasal floor look distinctly human, and so do the shape and arrangement of the teeth. Misliya-1’s presence brings the fossil evidence into line with genetic studies, which suggest that modern humans first interbred with Neanderthals around 200,000 years ago somewhere outside of Africa.

Why Lucasfilm Decided to Dump the Expanded Universe Before Making ‘Star Wars’ Sequels https://briefnews.eu/why-lucasfilm-decided-to-dump-the-expanded-universe-before-making-star-wars-sequels/ https://briefnews.eu/why-lucasfilm-decided-to-dump-the-expanded-universe-before-making-star-wars-sequels/#respond Mon, 15 Jan 2018 19:55:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-lucasfilm-decided-to-dump-the-expanded-universe-before-making-star-wars-sequels/ Lucasfilm Expanded Universe

It’s been over a month since the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so you’re all probably very familiar with the complaints about the movie by now. One of the most popular sounds something like this: “The Luke Skywalker I know would never act like that.” Basic translation: “I read a ton of novels featuring that character in which he behaves totally differently than he does in this movie.” Those novels were part of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, a collection of Lucasfilm-approved stories that was stricken from the official canon when Disney bought Lucasfilm and rebranded into what’s now called Star Wars Legends.

We heard an official explanation about why the company decided to set the EU aside when that decision was made back in 2014, but now one of the Lucasfilm Story Group members has given a much more specific justification for their reasoning in a new interview. Check out the latest Lucasfilm Expanded Universe explanation below.

Speaking with SyFy.com, Story Group member Leland Chee, who also oversees The Holocron (which is essentially Lucasfilm’s official version of Wookieepedia), relayed his reasoning for separating the Expanded Universe stories for the new movies, games, and projects moving forward, and it has to do with the death of a major character:

“For me it came down to simply that we had killed Chewbacca in the Legends — a big moon had fallen on him. Part of that [original decision] was Chewbacca, because he can’t speak and just speaks in growls, he was a challenging character to write for in novels. Publishing had decided they needed to kill somebody, and it was Chewbacca.

But if you have the opportunity to bring back Chewbacca into a live action film, you’re not gonna deprive fans that. There’s no way that I’d want to do an Episode VII that didn’t have Chewbacca in it and have to explain that Chewbacca had a moon fall on his head. And if we were going to overturn a monumental decision like that, everything else was really just minor in comparison.”

The Chewbacca scenario certainly isn’t the sole reason this decision was made, but it’s a perfect example of the types of problems Lucasfilm would be dealing with if they had decided to incorporate everything from the EU into their future properties. Filmmakers would be totally boxed in – not only with what characters can and can’t do, but also with having to bring their movies to a screeching halt in order to explain things that happened off-screen to general audiences who didn’t immerse themselves in the world of novels and comics over the previous 30 years.

As much as fans were upset that the Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi didn’t align with his portrayal in the books, I’d like to think that if everyone took a step back and looked at the Star Wars universe with a macro view, we’d all know deep down that Lucasfilm made the right decision. And if this is still a bitter pill to swallow, remember: just because the EU has been set apart doesn’t mean it’s been completely wiped clean. Some characters and story elements in Star Wars Rebels were originally created in Expanded Universe content, and there’s always the chance that future filmmakers could use the EU in a similar way to pull aspects back into the official Star Wars canon.
