A right-hand man to his brother at the Roar since 2015, Aloisi was overlooked for the interim head coaching role for newcomer Darren Davies when John stepped down late last year.

Like John, Ross had been contracted to the Roar until 2020.

It is understood a settlement was reached and he informed players of his departure, effective immediately, at training on Friday.

“I want to thank the owners, management, supporters, football department and the players for their support over the past few years,” he said.

“It has been an honour and privilege to work for this great club in Brisbane Roar and I take great pride in making the finals each season, qualifying for the AFC Champions League and going within a point of winning the Premiers’ Plate. “I wish everyone associated with the Brisbane Roar the best for the remainder of the season and beyond.” The Roar have gone nine games without a win this season and were thumped in a club-worst 5-0 loss to Melbourne Victory at Suncorp Stadium on Tuesday night. They travel to Central Coast on Sunday, who sit below the Roar on the ladder but buoyed by a breakthrough defeat of Melbourne City on Wednesday.

Benidorm EXODUS: Britons are FLEEING Benidorm as hotels see drastic FALL in holidays https://briefnews.eu/benidorm-exodus-britons-are-fleeing-benidorm-as-hotels-see-drastic-fall-in-holidays/ https://briefnews.eu/benidorm-exodus-britons-are-fleeing-benidorm-as-hotels-see-drastic-fall-in-holidays/#respond Fri, 04 Jan 2019 12:09:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/benidorm-exodus-britons-are-fleeing-benidorm-as-hotels-see-drastic-fall-in-holidays/

Figures released by local hotel association Hosbec show the number of overnight stays in the famous Costa Blanca holiday resort by Brit tourists last year plummeted by 454,000.

The drop represented an eight per cent fall, although the five million overnight stays registered by UK visitors still made Britain Benidorm’s number one foreign tourist market.

In December 41.7 per cent of the foreign holidaymakers who stayed in Benidorm were Brits according to the Hosbec figures, compared with just three per cent from second-placed Belgium and 2.2 per cent from third-placed Holland.

Spanish holidaymakers accounted for just over half the tourists who made overnight stays in the resort.

Hotel bosses say the resurgence of the domestic market – with the number of overnight stays by Spaniards last year jumping by 494,000 to 5.3 million – has countered the problem the British slump could have caused.

The Spanish rise – helped by a 17 per cent increase in the number of Portuguese tourists – has meant Benidorm hoteliers have been able to grade last year as one of the best-ever and on par with its historic 2016 when the number of overnight stays came close to reaching the 12 million mark.

The Brit fall has been blamed on competition from countries including Turkey and Egypt, the reduction of air capacity and the choice of apartments as accommodation.

Hosbec President Antonio Mayor said: “Despite a push by rival destinations like Turkey and Egypt, we are very satisfied at the results obtained in Benidorm.

“Few holiday destinations can present such solvency. Any businessman in the travel industry would be happy with guaranteed results like this for the next ten years.”

Brits began to flock to Benidorm in the sixties as package holidays became a trend.

The resort slowly became a home-for-home for package tourists from the UK with British pubs and fish and chip restaurants.

In September grandmother-of-six Freda Jackson, 81, from Blackburn, claimed her Benidorm holiday was ruined because her hotel had “too many Spaniards.”

Last week it emerged another Brit holiday favourite – the Costa del Sol resort of Torremolinos – had enjoyed its best tourism figures for 10 years with almost one million visitors recorded.

Giants exodus key to trade finale https://briefnews.eu/giants-exodus-key-to-trade-finale/ https://briefnews.eu/giants-exodus-key-to-trade-finale/#respond Mon, 15 Oct 2018 17:38:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/giants-exodus-key-to-trade-finale/ THE dominoes are set to fall over the last two days of the AFL trade period, with GWS set to play a big part despite shedding players.

The Giants salary caps woes are well known and the side will likely lose Dylan Shiel, who nominated Essendon and Tom Scully to Hawthorn for picks.

But the club may also help West Coast get Geelong’s Tim Kelly, with the Cats looking for a first-round pick to send Kelly home.

The Herald Sun reported the Shiel deal may not be done until deadline night with the Giants and Bombers at an impasse.

There have also been calls by clubs to block Scully’s proposed trade to Hawthorn for pick 53, including Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes, who called Scully “an elite midfielder in the competition”.

However, the dominoes may have fallen the way they have on the back of Shiel’s selection of Essendon according to foxfooty.com.au reporter Tom Morris.

It has also been revealed the Giants may be worried about Scully’s ability to get back to full strength after a season-ending ankle injury in round two.

“My understanding is that he (Scully) originally wanted to go to Essendon — at least that was his strong preference at the start. Then Dylan Shiel, looks like he’s going to go to Essendon, so he said ‘I’d like to go to Hawthorn’,” Morris told Fox Footy’s The Trade Lowdown.

“Certainly other clubs in Victoria were told that Essendon was his club and then it became Hawthorn, so they were left a little bit bemused as well.”

Scully was put through a medical with Hawthorn last week and reportedly passed after the season-ending injury.

Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph said the Giants still had major concerns over Scully’s fitness.

“When he ripped that syndesmosis, this was an injury some compared to Dane Swan’s season-ender (in 2016). That’s the reason why they are giving him up for only Pick 53,” Ralph said on The Trade Lowdown.

“They have serious reservations about his capacity to get back anywhere close to 100 per cent.

“As was discussed to me, ‘if you think a trade is seriously imbalanced, there is a very good reason for it’ — that was the phrasing that was put to me.”

The Giants are draft pick rich and GWS could be key in helping the Eagles land Kelly.

Geelong are looking for a top 10 pick for the first-year star and West Coast hold the pick 20 and 22, which is unlikely to be enough for Geelong.

But it’s expected the Giants will receive pick 9 for Shiel from Essendon, should the deal go through, and pick 11 for Rory Lobb from Fremantle.

“Tim Kelly’s deal with the West Coast footy club will go down to the wire, but his management is confident that a club like GWS will step in as the unlikely saviour,” Ralph said on The Trade Lowdown.

“It’s not just a homesickness issue, there are issues within his family and with his kids, which make it an absolute priority to get home. But if the Giants do the Shiel and the Lobb deals, they’ll have (Picks) 9 and 11, so West Coast could trade 20 and 22 for one of those picks.

“(Kelly’s) manger Anthony van der Wielen is really confident it will happen. West Coast are still saying to Geelong ‘Just take 20 and 22, Stephen Wells, he’s a star!’

“I think something will certainly get done.”

Last week, Ralph revealed Kelly would rather see out his contract with Geelong in 2019 than go to Fremantle, but the Dockers, who hold pick 11, are still trying to lobby the Cats.

Metro Exodus world premiere: Could this be the Half-Life 3 we always wanted? https://briefnews.eu/metro-exodus-world-premiere-could-this-be-the-half-life-3-we-always-wanted/ https://briefnews.eu/metro-exodus-world-premiere-could-this-be-the-half-life-3-we-always-wanted/#respond Wed, 13 Jun 2018 02:56:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/metro-exodus-world-premiere-could-this-be-the-half-life-3-we-always-wanted/

SANTA MONICA, Calif.—The Ukrainian game developers at 4A Games don’t hesitate to list Half-Life 2 as a defining inspiration for Metro, their long-running first-person shooter series. A 4A representative at a pre-E3 event in May cited Valve’s linear storytelling and knack for cinematic presentation as defining tentpoles for the games Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, which the studio now calls “two halves of the same game.”

So what, then, has driven inspiration and development on next year’s sequel Metro Exodus? 4A isn’t specific. Instead, it vaguely refers to modern gaming as “the era of the best single-player games in years.” That’s its competition, the studio says.

But after two hours playing through the massive, harrowing, open-world terror of Metro Exodus, it’s hard to escape the feeling that 4A had a specific goal in making a new, epic game with the word “Metro” on the title: not to beat an existing game, but to make the open-world version of Half-Life that Valve never got around to slapping the number “3” onto.

Man Utd transfer special: Five players in as Mourinho prepares mass exodus https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-transfer-special-five-players-in-as-mourinho-prepares-mass-exodus/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-transfer-special-five-players-in-as-mourinho-prepares-mass-exodus/#respond Mon, 19 Mar 2018 01:27:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-transfer-special-five-players-in-as-mourinho-prepares-mass-exodus/

Shaw along with Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian are all set to be sold to help finance the next round of Mourinho’s re-building process.

United are also set to lose Marouane Fellaini, who is a free agent and has refused to sign a new deal, while Michael Carrick is retiring and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be released.

Among Mourinho’s targets are Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, Tottenham pair Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose, Chelsea winger Willian and Shakthar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

And striker Romelu Lukaku has revealed: “I know that a lot of good players will come in next summer – that’s for sure.”

Shaw bore the brunt of Mourinho’s anger following United’s uninspiring FA Cup quarter-final win over Brighton.

The United manager has criticised Shaw repeatedly in the past, most notably last April when he publicly questioned his approach in training, his commitment, his focus and his ambition.

But his latest attack after he had hauled off Shaw at half-time for not following tactical instructions, is likely to prove the last straw for player and manager.

“I was not happy with his performance,” said Mourinho. “We did not play as I had prepared the team to play.

“We worked in training on certain kinds of movements where it was really important the two full-backs to be aggressive and to be always in front, to create space for [Nemanja] Matic and Scott [McTominay] to play in front of the two central defenders. I didn’t have that with Luke or [Antonio] Valencia.

“I could have changed both of them at half-time but I didn’t change both because it would have left me with only one more substitution. But to try to improve our offensive football and to be more aggressive, I had to change one and I chose Luke because at least Antonio, defensively, was capable of some good positioning.

“In the first half every time they came into Luke’s corridor, the cross was coming and a dangerous situation was coming.”

Shaw, who has made only 55 starts since his £28million move form Southampton in 2014, was clearly in Mourinho’s thoughts when he accused some of his players of being “scared to play” and lacking the “personality” to respond following the dismal Champions League exit to Sevilla in midweek.

“Anyone can be on the pitch and touch the ball every five minutes,” he added.

“But in a period of bad results to have the confidence and personality to be on the pitch and say, ‘give me the ball because I want to play’, that is a little bit more difficult – and not all of them were able to do that.”

Silicon Valley backlash won’t necessarily cause an exodus to Middle America https://briefnews.eu/silicon-valley-backlash-wont-necessarily-cause-an-exodus-to-middle-america/ https://briefnews.eu/silicon-valley-backlash-wont-necessarily-cause-an-exodus-to-middle-america/#respond Sun, 18 Feb 2018 22:03:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/silicon-valley-backlash-wont-necessarily-cause-an-exodus-to-middle-america/

Peter Thiel is fleeing liberal Silicon Valley for … Los Angeles.

That’s according to a story from the Wall Street Journal this week, which reports that Thiel is planning to relocate to a home he bought in the City of Angels six years ago. Fifty staffers from Thiel Capital and the Thiel Foundation are also reportedly planning to move to Los Angeles.

Thiel was reportedly driven out, in part, by the liberal echo chamber he feels has developed in Silicon Valley. In San Francisco, nearly 90 percent of voters cast a ballot for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

A conservative and libertarian thinker who backed Donald Trump in the 2016 election, Thiel thinks Silicon Valley’s hostility to non-liberal values isn’t just bad for conservatives. He believes the political bias will harm Silicon Valley’s ability to innovate, according to a local San Francisco TV station, which spoke with a source close to Thiel.

“SF is still important, but the most exciting future tech developments may come outside of it,” the source told San Francisco’s KPIX 5.

Thiel isn’t alone in thinking that the Bay Area may not maintain its grip on groundbreaking tech startups for much longer. Liberal and conservative tech workers alike are expressing dissatisfaction with Silicon Valley, thanks to its homogeneous thinking and its ever-increasing cost of living.

VentureBeat’s Heartland Tech channel invites you to join us and other senior business leaders at BLUEPRINT in Reno on March 5-7. Learn how to expand jobs to Middle America, lower costs, and boost profits. Click here to request an invite and be a part of the conversation.

Popular podcaster Tim Ferriss moved from San Francisco to Austin in order to escape what he called “a mono-conversation of tech that is near impossible to avoid.” Y Combinator president Sam Altman and Sequoia’s Michael Moritz also both drew criticism for blog posts saying that China’s tech community is better than Silicon Valley’s in welcoming controversial ideas and outworking the competition (though they are both staying in Silicon Valley).

Here at VentureBeat’s Heartland Tech channel, I write about emerging tech hubs in the U.S. While the news that some well-known investors and entrepreneurs are now looking outside of Silicon Valley for inspiration might excite entrepreneurs and in places like Provo and Pittsburgh, a handful of high-profile techies leaving the Bay Area is unlikely to move the needle all that much. The reason is simple: People are most likely to move to places where they already have connections.

Ferriss mentioned that he was already familiar with Austin’s tech scene, having interviewed for a job at Trilogy Software after college. He also mentioned in a Reddit AMA that he’s visited Austin every year since 2007. Thiel is likely planning to move to Los Angeles because he already has a house there, and because he is reportedly planning on launching a media startup, which would be right at home in Los Angeles.

Less well-known tech executives I’ve talked to in the past year that have moved or are planning to move out of the Bay Area often return to their roots. Kansas native Brian McClendon, creator of Google Maps, moved back to his home state to get involved in local politics. Married Google executives Steve and Mary Grove are moving from the Bay Area to Steve’s home state of Minnesota, while Mary plans to leave Google to work for Steve Case’s Midwest-focused startup fund.

What leaders in emerging tech hubs should take away from the increasing criticism of Silicon Valley is this: If a city is waiting to recruit Bay Area tech workers and executives as soon as they express dissatisfaction with Silicon Valley, it’s already too late. The areas that are most likely to attract Bay Area expats are cities like Austin, a place tech workers have likely been visiting for years, thanks to the annual SXSW festival, and other coastal hubs, like Los Angeles, New York, and Boston, or cities the tech workers originally hail from.

Instead of trying to lure these Bay Area transplants, focus on supporting the tech companies and workers that are already in your community — which many Heartland tech leaders are already doing. If your city is home to fast-growing tech startups, Bay Area tech workers and investors are more likely to come across it in their line of work. That way, when they are thinking about moving, your city is more likely to come up on their radar. Better yet, support those startups so that the next generation of tech workers doesn’t feel like they have to move to the Bay Area to have exciting career opportunities.

Darrell Issa to retire from Congress amid record GOP exodus https://briefnews.eu/darrell-issa-to-retire-from-congress-amid-record-gop-exodus/ https://briefnews.eu/darrell-issa-to-retire-from-congress-amid-record-gop-exodus/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2018 00:55:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/darrell-issa-to-retire-from-congress-amid-record-gop-exodus/ California Congressman Darrell Issa is now the 31st Republican to decide against running for reelection this year, giving Democrats a chance to flip the San Diego-based district for the first time in 14 years.

Rep. Issa announced Wednesday that he will not seek reelection in California’s 49th district this November, becoming the 31st Republican to leave the House since President Donald Trump was elected.

“Throughout my service, I worked hard and never lost sight of the people our government is supposed to serve. Yet with the support of my family, I have decided that I will not seek re-election in California’s 49th District,” the 9-term congressman said in a statement.

The last time one party had so many retirees was in 1994, when 28 Democrats retired and Republicans regained control of Congress.

Democrats would need to win 24 seats to retake control of the House in November.

Issa, 64, was nearly unseated in 2016 when Democratic Douglas Applegate came within 1,700 votes of winning the northern San Diego-county based seat, according to data from the California Secretary of State.

Applegate, who has already announced he is running for the same seat this year, tweeted Wednesday that a “blue wave” is coming to San Diego and Orange County.

However, Applegate will be facing off against three other Democrats, including Orange County environmental lawyer Mike Levin, San Diego real estate investor Paul Kerr and former State Department and United Nations aide Sara Jacobs.

Jacobs has been endorsed by EMILY’s List; Navy veteran Paul Kerr; and environmental attorney Mike Levin.

With four Democrats running for the same seat, Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), predicted that the district will have “one of the bloodiest primaries in America.”

“While Democrats fight with each other, Republicans will focus on fighting Democrats — and that’s how we plan to win. We look forward to facing whoever limps out of the Democrats’ battle royale: black and blue, and broke,” Stivers said in a statement.

On Monday, Rep. Ed Royce (R-California), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also announced he would not seek reelection in California’s 39th congressional district, which includes parts of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won Issa’s district by about seven points and Royce’s district by nearly nine points during the 2016 presidential election, leading many to believe that Democrats could flip both districts this year.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) said Issa’s retirement “means we are in a strong position to elect a Democrat to the 49th District this fall.”

“California Republicans clearly see the writing on the wall and realize that their party and its priorities are toxic to their reelection chances in 2018,” Drew Godinich, spokesman for the DCCC, said in a statement.

Following Issa’s announcement, the non-partisan Cook Political Report moved the 49th district from a “toss up” to “lean Democratic.”

The report states that Republicans could still win the district if Democrats split the vote, but the report states that it would require “a very elaborate set of circumstances.”

After Royce announced his retirement on Monday, the Cook Political Report also moved his district from “lean Republican” to “lean Democratic.”

For nearly a year, hundreds of activists with Indivisible San Diego have gathered outside Issa’s office in Vista, California on a weekly basis to protest against the congressman.

On Tuesday, a group of more than 400 activists gathered outside Issa’s office to hold a “retirement party” for the congressman, complete with festive signs and a cake that read “out with the old, in with the new, bye Issa, we won’t miss you.”
