The USB Promoter Group announced that the next-gen USB Version 2.0 standard is “pending release” and will double the bandwidth of existing USB 4 connectors, from 40 Gbps to up to 80 Gbps.

Amazingly, the new standard is also backwards compatible with previous USB 4 cables. This means that existing USB-C cables capable of 40 Gbps will also get the faster speeds when the new standard becomes available. From the press release: “Key characteristics of the updated USB4 solution include: Up to 80 Gbps operation, based on a new physical layer architecture, using existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly-defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables.”

The USB promoter Group didn’t explain the details around how that’s possible, but a spokesperson for the organization told The Verge it was “a requirement when the new specification was developed and the specifics as to how 80Gbps signaling is accomplished will be disclosed once the final specification is released.”

It’s not yet clear when the new standard will actually reach consumers. In its press release, the USB Promoter Group said the “update is specifically targeted to developers at this time” so it could still be some time before the rest of us can get computers with the new super-fast connector.

“China and Russia are pursuing hypersonic weapons because their speed, altitude, and maneuverability may defeat most missile defense systems, and they may be used to improve long-range conventional and nuclear strike capabilities,” the report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reads.

The report also highlights the challenges to American security posed by Chinese and Russian anti-satellite weapons and stealth aircraft that “could fly faster, carry advanced weapons, and achieve further distances.” The rapid development of the cutting-edge technology “could force US aircraft to operate at father distances and put more US targets at risk,” the report notes.

Speaking at a Valdai Club session in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia surpassed its rivals in terms of hypersonic weapons, calling Russia’s prevalence in the field “an obvious fact.”

“Nobody has precise hypersonic weapons. Some plan to test theirs in 18 to 24 months. We have them in service already,” Putin said.

In March Putin unveiled several advanced weapons systems, including the Avangard hypersonic glider warheads and the Kinzhal –or Dagger– hypersonic cruise missile. The Kinzhal can fly at Mach-10 speed and has a reported range of 2,000 km (1243 miles). It was reported that Russia’s advanced Sukhoi Su-57 jet might soon be armed with a missile similar to the Kinzhal.

While the Avangard is about to enter military service, the Kinzhal has already been deployed with the force.

Faced with the unmatched hypersonic capabilities, the Pentagon has launched about a dozen programs to protect the US from hypersonic weapons. A project named ‘Glide Breaker’ to develop an interceptor capable of neutralizing incoming hypersonic gliders has been in the works with The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

It’s hardly the smoking gun for what’s called the conformal cyclic cosmology (CCC) model, especially given other things that could also explain these ‘scars’. But it’s definitely worthy of serious consideration.

If you’ve been craving TiVo’s interface overhaul ever since it was unveiled last year, you now have an opportunity to try it without buying a brand new device. As of October 29th, you can visit TiVo’s website and request an upgrade to your Bolt, Mini or Roamio set-top box. It’ll take “2-3 hours” before you can force the download, but you don’t have to wait for TiVo to push the new design on its own. Think carefully before you make the leap, though: while the interface is a leap into the modern era, you may lose functionality in the process.

The interface treats streaming content as roughly on par with conventional TV, and introduces a more sophisticated prediction system that surfaces what it believes you’d be likely to watch, including online material. It’s more extensible too. However, Zats Not Funny notes that you lose the Live Guide in favor of a plain grid guide, and you can’t yet upload content from your PC. And when first-run TiVo Minis (the ones that have infrared-only remotes) don’t have a back button, navigating the new interface will be tricky.

All the same, this could be a breath of fresh air if you have a (slightly) older TiVo device. The revamped interface won’t suddenly turn your hardware into a cutting-edge media hub, but it may do enough that you won’t feel as much pressure to get a secondary device to play video from online services.

Cunard is a stalwart of the global cruising industry. 

The glamorous UK cruise line is adding an exciting new member to its impressive fleet. 

A fourth ship is officially on the way, but it won’t set sail until 2022. 

Cunard’s parent company, Carnival Corporation & PLC, has signed a memorandum of agreement with Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, where the huge new ship will be built. 

The 3,000-passenger cruise liner will become the biggest in the Cunard fleet, at a stunning 113,000 tonnes. 

It easily surpasses the 2,695-passenger Queen Mary 2 at 151,400 tonnes, and trumps Queen Elizabeth’s 90,901 tonne 2,092-guest capacity, as well as Queen Victoria, which weighs 90,049 and fits 2,081 passengers on board. 

Carnival said it has “ambitious plans” for Cunard’s future.

The new ship is the first to be built in the fleet since Queen Elizabeth in 2010.

Since then, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria have both undergone extensive refurbishments for modernisation.

The amount of money generated by the Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) of blockchain-based companies is astounding. In July alone, ICOs generated $ 500 million of funding, bringing the all-time total to over $ 1.6 billion. That doesn’t even include August, where FileCoin is closing in on $ 200 million by itself.

It’s impressive.

Yet, on the horizon is a potentially even greater wave of ICOs. Call them “reverse ICOs,” where existing businesses realize the best way for them to compete is by decentralizing themselves.

The poster child for this move is messenger service Kik, which will introduce its Kin token in the next few quarters. Depending on the research, Kik is somewhere between #5 and #15 among messaging apps in terms of worldwide popularity and usage, but there was speculation as far back as a year ago that its growth has stalled.

Most likely, Kik realized Facebook was going to own the traditional messaging market due to the dominance of Messenger and WhatsApp. Kik needed a new, more compelling strategy.

That is EXACTLY what it has found by reverse ICOing itself. In so doing, it is giving users who generate value on its platform the opportunity get compensated for it, in the form of tokens.

It is as good an example of the future world as we will get.

In the first iteration of software, you paid for using an app. Today, you use an app “for free” (even though you pay for it with your personal data).

In the blockchain-based world of decentralized tokens, you get paid for the value you create.

Given that Kik has 300 million users (give or take), I would not be surprised if its ICO generated $ 750 million to north of $ 1 billion. (Not that I am expert, but I did predict Tezos would raise $ 250 million. I was off by only $ 18 million.)

Kik will kickstart a new industry — the reverse ICO

After Kik’s successful ICO, we will see a wave of existing companies follow suit.

The most likely scenario involves the tokenization of “sharing economy” companies that are either not profitable or sitting in positions #3-#7 in their industry (most likely both).

The web is already full of proposals for how SoundCloud, Twitter, Visa, Uber, Medium, Spotify, and more could pull this off. Trent McConaghy has done a stellar job of showing how this might look, including how industry leaders like Amazon and Facebook might decentralize.

I think reverse ICOs from Amazon and Facebook are a bit further afield, as insanely profitable companies or those with total market domination have more to risk by changing everything. The secondary and tertiary players don’t. That’s where Kik, SoundCloud, Twitter, and many others find themselves.

The tokenized future

In the years to come, as the trend toward reverse ICOs increases, we will see new jobs emerge, such as “Tokenization Consultant,” as well as new industry practices, such as reverse ICO departments at law firms and management consulting firms.

In the ongoing march of blockchain towards mainstream adoption, the trend that Kik begins is one to watch. It will have profound implications for the stock market, IPOs, regulation, and community ownership. And a lot of new jobs will come from transitioning existing companies from the centralized paradigm to the decentralized paradigm.
