Cabin crew in the 1950s had to take great care of their appearance while at work.

The early decades of flying were strongly associated with glamour and luxury as only the wealthy could afford to fly.

Consequently, the air hostesses were expected to look pleasing to the eye.

However, some flight attendant requirements were also very practical and necessary.

An air hostess who served with United Airlines in the USA in the early 1950s has revealed the height restrictions that were in place.

Ethel Pattison, 93, joined United Airlines as a stewardess in the summer of 1951.

Today, she is a historian at Los Angles airport in California, US which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

She explained that when she flew, air hostesses needed to be within a certain height bracket.

This was entirely from practical reasons as the woman needed to be able to reach upwards as well as not scraping the aircraft ceiling.

“In those days, those ladies applying to be stewardesses had to be 5 foot 2 inches to 5 foot 8 inches,” she told Express.co.uk.

“With the jets, planes were bigger and so height increased to 5 foot 10 inches to reach the overhead storage.”

Air hostesses also had to look after their weight, and this was measured by bosses on a regular basis.

A New York Times classified ad for stewardesses at Eastern Airlines listed the following requirements in 1966: “A high school graduate, single (widows and divorcees with no children considered), 20 years of age (girls 19 1/2 may apply for future consideration).

“5’2” but no more than 5’9″, weight 105 to 135 in proportion to height.”

The strict rules did not prevent the cabin crew enjoying themselves, however.

“I enjoyed being a stewardess, living with roommates in Seattle and travelling and learning about the United States, it was a great experience for me,” Ethel said.

Ethel went on the become America’s First Airport Tour Guide in 1956 at Los Angeles airport.

The airport then was incredibly different to the huge bustling hub it is today.

“LAX was three two storey buildings before the jet age airport in 1961, two for the airlines with small seating area for passengers and their outside gates and one for post office, bank, coffee shop and weather bureau, restaurant and observation deck on the second story,” she explained.

She added: “Looking back in time at how far LAX has come, it seems to adapt to its growth and increase in passenger totals well and we look forward to seeing it continue to reach its potential.”

Rules still apply to flight attendants today when it comes to appearance, although they are more relaxed.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Why does flat Earth belief still exist? https://briefnews.eu/why-does-flat-earth-belief-still-exist/ https://briefnews.eu/why-does-flat-earth-belief-still-exist/#respond Thu, 08 Nov 2018 01:54:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-does-flat-earth-belief-still-exist/

Reality vs. belief about the shape of the Earth. Click for a full transcript.

There’s no shortage of strange beliefs out there, and not all of them involve having a firm grip on reality. But it’s truly bizarre to see one from the latter camp have a sudden surge in popularity and attention millennia after we knew it was wrong. But when it comes to the idea that the Earth is flat, centuries of accumulating evidence don’t make much of a difference—its adherents have centuries of history of ignoring it, along with at least one not-nearly-as-famous-as-it-should-be instance of threatening a prominent scientist along the way.

That was Alfred Russell Wallace, one of the two co-developers of the theory of evolution.

This is our first try of a new video format where we look at controversies that, well, really shouldn’t be controversial. While we may get back to Wallace and his theory, for the most part we’re going to focus on cases where the motivation for the controversy is a bit less obvious. What drives people to believe in ideas that are blatantly, obviously divorced from reality? Or to reject ones that have a solid foundation of evidence?

  • Etsy shops Irish Confectionery Co. and VineGelee both sell gummy bears made with Fireball cinnamon whiskey.
  • VineGelee’s Fire Bears start at $ 9.95, while Irish Confectionery Co.’s Fire Cubs start at $ 5.81.
  • Reviews for both are very positive.

For some of us, back in the day, no college party was ever complete without a big vat of booze-soaked gummies. These days, we’ve graduated to classier alcohol-infused candies thanks to trendy companies like Sugarfina and its Rosé Roses and Champagne Bears. We’re big fans of these more sophisticated gummies, but very occasionally, we find ourselves reminiscing on the less fancy days of college. Turns out there are a couple Etsy shops that have found a way to turn a drink we still love from college into chic gummy candy form.

Delish recently uncovered Irish Confectionery Co. and VineGelee on Etsy, and both shops are selling Fireball gummy bears. Most of us first encountered the cinnamon whiskey in college, and it has remained a staple on our bar carts ever since. Now, we’re excited to try it out in this new form. VineGelee calls its boozy creation Fire Bears, and according to a review on the Etsy shop, the bears are quite potent (great news for those of us trying to relive our college days). The Fire Bears are made by hand and ship anywhere in the United States. VineGelee also offers custom labels so you can give them away as a party favor at your bestie’s Bachelorette party. Packages of Fire Bears start at 4 ounces and go for $ 9.95 each.

  • The Chinese Communist Party is keen to portray itself as a peaceful and scandal-free power.
  • It refuses to acknowledge its human rights abuses, and discrimination against LGBT community and feminists.
  • It’s not easy to do in the digital age, where nearly half of China’s citizens use the internet.
  • These are four of the most commonly used tricks in the party’s playbook.

The ways that China has been monitoring and ranking its citizens, secretly imprisoning ethnic minorities, and ignoring its LGBT community have been widely documented in the West.

But citizens in China itself may have no idea that any of these things are going on.

Child-free plane zones: Do YOU think they should exist? This many passengers say YES https://briefnews.eu/child-free-plane-zones-do-you-think-they-should-exist-this-many-passengers-say-yes/ https://briefnews.eu/child-free-plane-zones-do-you-think-they-should-exist-this-many-passengers-say-yes/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2018 19:22:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/child-free-plane-zones-do-you-think-they-should-exist-this-many-passengers-say-yes/

Children on planes can be one of the most feared things on a long-haul flight.

A recent viral video captured the shocking scene of a child causing chaos during an eight-hour flight, screaming and running down the aisles.

The child was filmed “climbing over all the chairs” despite flight attendants attempting to intervene with the child’s parent.

But do you think that planes should have child-free zones?

A survey conducted in 2017 by Airfarewatchdog asked whether children should sit in separate zones.

It found that over half of people thought that families who had children aged under 10 years old should sit in a designated spot.

Some airlines already have this in place such as Malaysia Airline and AirAsia.

Passengers can purchase seats that are ‘kid-free’ meaning they won’t have loud children sitting next to them.

Of course, this doesn’t stop the problem of younger children terrorising the whole plane, simply that they won’t be sat next to them.

A number of Reddit forums support the idea, with many happy to pay extra to be away from children.

Some felt that it should be the norm without charging passengers more, with one user commenting: “It is absolutely high time they introduced childfree zones, given the distress/consternation that poorly controlled or bored children are known to cause other travellers.

“But under no circumstances should childfree travellers be expected to pay (a CF tax) for this, these zones should exist by default.”

Another stated: “Go one step further – child-free flights. If a screaming kid is 2 rows behind, it’s still loud.”

Yet airlines in the UK are yet to implement them, with Airfarewatchdog content editor Tracy Steward explaining some of the issues that could arise.

She told Business Insider: “It’s probably hard for parents to be super objective for this stuff. Whenever this comes up, people get so upset about it.

“If you’re a parent and you live with that kind of behaviour, you’re probably pretty resigned to kicking and screaming.

“If some stranger calls out your kid for misbehaving on a plane, those situations escalate so quickly.”

Flight secrets have revealed how to avoid sitting next to children on a plane with this simple trick.

The Real Vikings sees experts exploring the historical accuracy of the drama written by Vikings creator Michael Hirst.

Split into four parts, each episode of The Real Vikings looks at a different area of the warrior people.

The first episode of The Real Vikings focuses on women and looks at whether there could be shieldmaidens like Lagertha (played by Katheryn Winnick).

In fact, actress Winnick and co-star Alyssa Sutherland – who played Aslaug in the show – features in episode one.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN SUITS SEASON 7, EPISODE 11?

Did Shieldmaidens like Lagertha really exist?

Yes, the show discovered that it was feasible for women to fight alongside the men in battle if they were skilled, which could outwit brute strength.

On top of that, The Real Vikings documentary showed that a Viking skeleton buried with weapons was that of a woman and not a man as first thought.

The bones in question were dated to the 10th Century and found in the Viking fortified town of Birka in 1878.

When asked by Winnick whether the skeleton was definitive proof that Shieldmaidens existed, world renowned Vikings expert explained: “I say this is definitely a female warrior, someone who made her living on the battlefield.”

He added: “I think we can go back to old excavations and re-evaluate them.

“I think we’re going to see female warriors taking their place on the Viking stage in a way that hasn’t be possible to identify before.”

VIKINGS SEASON 5 RETURN DATE

Who is Lagertha in Vikings based on?

Due to the lack of firm historical evidence, Vikings often blurs history and myth to create drama.

It appeared that Lagertha or Lagerda was rooted in Norse mythology and she was described as being a shieldmaiden living around 795AD in what is modern-day Norway.

Historian Saxo Grammaticus from the 12th Century documented her life in his book Gesta Dacorum.

Saxo said that Lagertha was a “skilled Amazon, who, though a maiden had the courage of a man, and fought in front among the bravest with her hair loose over her shoulders”.

VIKINGS SEASON 6 RELEASE DATE

The real Lagertha is said to have married Ragnar (played by Travis Fimmel in the show) and that they did have children with their son named Fridleif rather than Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig).

Historical accounts suggest that Ragnar had to win Lagertha’s hand by killing both a boar and a hound before she would accept his marriage proposal. These scenes were depicted in the History drama.

By some accounts Lagertha helped Ragnar to fight the Danish civil war, while others said that she returned home to rule along as queen.

Did he really exist? https://briefnews.eu/vikings-is-ragnar-lothbrok-based-on-a-real-person-did-he-really-exist/ https://briefnews.eu/vikings-is-ragnar-lothbrok-based-on-a-real-person-did-he-really-exist/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 13:48:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vikings-is-ragnar-lothbrok-based-on-a-real-person-did-he-really-exist/

From seasons one to four, TV drama Vikings was led by fearsome Danish warrior Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel).

The show, created by Michael Hirst and airing on US channel History, followed his exploits as he sought to conquer England and France.

Season one started off with the Lindisfarne raid of 793 AD, which is the first real-life recorded Viking incursion in history and led to the destruction of a monastery – the ruins of which can still be seen today.

In the drama Lothbrok was portrayed as a farmer who climbed up through the ranks of the Viking hierarchy by proving himself during a series of English raids.

He eventually became a Scandinavian king thanks to his military success and the support from his fellow Vikings and kinsman.

The last run ended with the shocking death of Ragnar and season five has dealt with the power struggle between his sons in the aftermath.

But did Ragnar Lothbrok really exist and is his depiction in Vikings historically accurate?

VIKINGS SEASON 6 RELEASE DATE

Is Ragnar Lothbrok from Vikings based on a real person?

The existence of Ragnar Lothbrok or Lodbrok is uncertain with some suggesting that he is the stuff of Norse legend.

Others theorise that he may have been a real man but his successes over the years have been subject to exaggeration.

Justin Pollard, who served as the consultant on Vikings, explained that the character in the TV show is an amalgamation of a number of individuals who appear in historical accounts from the era.

“It could never be a complete historical reconstruction, nor would we have enough data to base our hero on a single character, but a hero must have a name and we chose one whose shadow haunts the pages of 9th Century chronicles before re-emerging in later centuries as a sparkling saga hero. That man was Ragnar Lothbrok,” Pollard explained in an article for Biography.

He went on to say: “Ragnar is the first real Viking personality to emerge from the hazy accounts of the period but in many ways he still belongs more in the fable-filled pages of the sagas than amongst the sober entries in the chronicles.

“That there even was a single Ragnar is still a matter of some debate due not least to the eagerness of contemporary writers to kill him off – something which is dutifully recorded a number of times, at a number of dates and accompanied by a number of different reasons.”

According to Pollard, the figure of Lothbrok first appeared in historical records around 845 via a man called “Ragnall”, who led a fleet of ships to invade Paris. But due to dysentery sent by the gods, the captain and his men perished from the illness.

However, the figure of Lothbrok comes up again and again over the next 10 years with accounts having him sailing the seas off the coast of Scotland and eventually settling in Dublin.

He meets his death in 852, before he’s resurrected and killed off again at Carlingford Lough. The accounts see Lothbrok then kicking the bucket in Anglesey and finally in Northumbria during a raid where he’s thrown into a snake pit.

After this, Scandinavian poets write about the Saga of Ragnar and the Tale of the Sons of Ragnar, which are not based in historical fact.

Pollard describes these poems as “dramatic fictionalised stories of long dead heroes whose connection to reality might be little more than a name”.

The Lothbrok portrayed in Vikings is a mixture of the Ragnar chronicles and heroes mentioned in history but also “the embodiment of the extraordinary effect the arrival of Viking raiders had on the Ninth Century European mind”.

He concludes: “Our Ragnar is a combination of all these things – the ghostly remembrance of one of the first great Viking raiders, the swashbuckling hero of the sagas and above all, the fear of the arrival of ‘outsiders’.”

The Lothbrok of Vikings met a gruesome end in season four when he was tossed into a pit of venomous snakes – which was one of the ways the legendary figure met his many demises.

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE IN VIKINGS SEASON 5?

Who plays Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings?

Ragnar Lothbrok is played by Australian actor Travis Fimmel, whose biggest roles to date include Hollywood film Warcraft and The Beast.

Speaking about his character’s death, Fimmel told The Hollywood Reporter: “It felt right for the show. The episodes that follow my death are fantastic. It works well for the show and the young actors to keep the audience.”

However, creator Hirst teased that Lothbrok could make a return in some form or other in the future, saying: “But because he’s such a powerful presence in people’s lives he could reappear in dreams, in visions…

“I don’t think that any of my major characters… I started with — Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard), Ragnar and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and Rollo (Clive Standen)… none of them will ever actually go away or disappear from the saga.”

Will there be another season of Vikings?

Yes, is the short answer. Season six was announced shortly before the premiere of the latest run in November 2017.

The renewal came off the back of the ratings success of season four with an average of 7.8 million viewers per episode in America.

The sixth run is in production now on location in Ireland.

  • A Lockheed Martin executive recently hinted that the SR-72, the hypersonic successor to the SR-71 Blackbird, may already exist.
  • The executive said that new design tools and more powerful computers created a “digital transformation” that helped bring about “the aircraft you see there” before he showed a slide of it.
  • It’s still unclear whether the aircraft exists, and how far Lockheed has progressed in developing it.

A Lockheed Martin executive hinted at a recent aerospace conference that the SR-72, the hypersonic successor to the SR-71 Blackbird, may already exist, according to Bloomberg.

Jack O’Banion, a vice president at Lockheed’s Skunk Works, made mysterious comments about the ultra-secret project at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ annual SciTech Forum.

O’Banion said that new design tools and more powerful computers brought about a “digital transformation” and “without [that] digital transformation, the aircraft you see there could not have been made,” Bloomberg’s Justin Bachman reported, adding that O’Banion then showed a slide of the SR-72.

This digital transformation reportedly gave Lockheed the ability to design a three-dimensional scramjet engine. Scramjet is a kind of ramjet air-breathing jet engine where combustion happens at supersonic speeds.

O’Banion said that five years ago Lockheed “couldn’t have made the engine itself — it would have melted down into slag,” according to Bloomberg.

“But now we can digitally print that engine with an incredibly sophisticated cooling system integral into the material of the engine itself and have that engine survive for multiple firings for routine operation,” O’Banion said.

Lockheed Martin did not respond to any Business Insider’s request for comment, and declined to answer any further questions from Bloomberg. The US Air Force also declined to answer any questions from Business Insider.

Lockheed announced it was developing the SR-72 in 2013, and that the “Son of Blackbird” would hit Mach 6 — over 4,500 mph — and possibly be operational by 2030.

Last year, reports emerged that Lockheed might test an “optionally piloted” flight research vehicle in 2018, and an actual test flight in 2020.

Reporters at Aviation Week also reportedly caught a glimpse last year of a “demonstrator vehicle” that may have been linked to the SR-72.

And, in perhaps a more far-fetched development, an American man named Tyler Gluckner, who runs a popular YouTube channel about aliens and UFOs called secureteam10, recently posted a video of images from GoogleEarth that he surmised looked like a hypersonic craft, reported by The Sun and Mailonline.

SR-71Wikimedia Commons

The satellite images were taken outside of a Pratt and Whitney building, which is not part of the Lockheed conglomerate.

Coincidentally or not, Boeing also unveiled a conceptual model for a new hypersonic jet that would hit Mach 5 and fulfill the same missions as the SR-71 at the same aerospace conference O’Banion spoke at.

Lockheed and Boeing are two of the largest defense contractors and political donors in the US.
