President Donald Trump on Saturday repeated his call to give drug dealers the death penalty in an effort to solve the opioid crisis.
Trump gave a speech in Pennsylvania, stumping for GOP special election candidate Rick Saccone, but spent much of the time railing against various Democrats, members of the media, and countries the US trades with.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

ANALYSIS:
Where were you 20 years ago today? If you were Jeff Bezos or a shareholder with enough foresight and confidence to invest in his startup, you were probably celebrating Amazon’s IPO, which raised $ 54 million — which in turn helped build a $ 465 billion company.
Let’s not dwell on the buzzkilling numbers of how much money everyone missed out on by not buying Amazon at $ 18 a share on May 15, 1997. (If you must know, here’s the IPO’s investment banker doing the math). There are two other notable things about this anniversary: how absurd the debate looks now that occurred around Amazon’s IPO valuation, and how similar it is to the debate that is still taking place today.
Amazon initially planned to sell its shares for $ 13 apiece. Some analysts balked at that price because it valued the company at 20 times sales – Amazon had made less than $ 16 million in 1996 and had 180,000 customers. There weren’t a lot of Internet startups to compare valuations to, so Wall Street opted for brick-and-mortar retailers, which traded around 1 times revenue.
At such a high valuation, some predicted Amazon would have trouble selling its shares to investors. After all, its prospectus warned that “the rate at which such losses will be incurred will increase significantly from current levels, and its recent revenue growth rates are not sustainable and will decrease in the future.”
Instead of bowing to skeptics, Bezos is said to have spent hours on the phone talking the offering price up to $ 17 a share. When investment bankers argued the IPO could fail if priced too high, Bezos shot back, “Can you guarantee for me that it will fail at $ 17?” When the answer was no, he asked the same question about $ 18 a share.
Amazon shares priced at $ 18 a share and rose 30 percent on their first day of trading. (Factoring in three stock splits in the late 1990s, Amazon’s offering price was $ 1.50 in today’s terms. The stock closed today at $ 957.57.) By the end of 1997, the company had 1.5 million customers and revenue of $ 148 million.
There were still plenty of skeptics. “Some people smoke Internet inhalant and their judgment gets bizarre,” said an analyst at Forrester Research about Amazon’s IPO. The debate raged, growing louder during the wake of the dot-com bust, but quieting in more recent years as Amazon dominated first e-commerce and eventually cloud computing.
In that time, Wall Street has come to accept that Bezos’ plan – shovel today’s potential profits into future revenue growth – could work for Amazon, even if multiple startups since then have tried that same trick and largely failed. Bezos spelled out clearly that plan in his 1997 letter to shareholders, a letter he reprints every single year to underscore Amazon’s early and long-term vision.
We believe that a fundamental measure of our success will be the shareholder value we create over the long term. This value will be a direct result of our ability to extend and solidify our current market leadership position. The stronger our market leadership, the more powerful our economic model. Market leadership can translate directly to higher revenue, higher profitability, greater capital velocity, and correspondingly stronger returns on invested capital.
Our decisions have consistently reflected this focus. We first measure ourselves in terms of the metrics most indicative of our market leadership: customer and revenue growth, the degree to which our customers continue to purchase from us on a repeat basis, and the strength of our brand. We have invested and will continue to invest aggressively to expand and leverage our customer base, brand, and infrastructure as we move to establish an enduring franchise.
What read in 1997 like boilerplate language for an Internet startup’s annual report looks, with the hindsight of 20 years, more like a bold business plan. It’s one that Amazon has fiercely and faithfully executed. The success of the plan can be seen in the growth of its revenue and valuation. Even now, Amazon’s stock is trading at 196 times its 2016 earnings. That may still raise some eyebrows, but it’s harder to find skeptics who would be willing to bet a lot of money against the company’s growth.

VARNER, Ark. (AP) — A federal judge temporarily blocked Arkansas from executing a second inmate Monday night after attorneys questioned whether the first execution had gone properly.
Jack Jones received a lethal injection earlier Monday evening that lasted 14 minutes. The state was set to execute Marcel Williams about an hour later after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Williams’ last appeals, but a federal judge temporarily halted the proceedings due to an emergency filing from Williams’ attorneys.
U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker halted Williams’ execution until she issues another order. His death warrant expires at midnight.
In the emergency filing, Williams’ attorneys wrote that officials spent 45 minutes trying to place an IV line in Jones’ neck before placing it elsewhere. It argued that Williams, who weighs 400 pounds, could face a “torturous” death because of his weight.
Intravenous lines are placed before witnesses are allowed access to the death chamber.
Arkansas’ attorney general says the attorneys’ account of the Jones execution was “inaccurate.”
An Associated Press reporter who witnessed the execution said Jones moved his lips briefly after the midazolam was administered, and officials put a tongue depressor in his mouth intermittently for the first few minutes. His chest stopped moving two minutes after they checked for consciousness, and he was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m.
Jones, who’d argued that his health conditions could lead to a painful death, gave a lengthy last statement. His final words were: “I’m sorry.”
“I hope over time you can learn who I really am and I am not a monster,” he said in the roughly 2-minute statement.
Williams was scheduled to be executed at 8:15 p.m. Monday after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his final appeals, but Baker’s order placed that on hold.
Jones was sent to death row for the 1995 rape and killing of Mary Phillips. He was also convicted of attempting to kill Phillips’ 11-year-old daughter and was convicted in another rape and killing in Florida.
Jones said earlier this month that he was ready for execution. He used a wheelchair and he’d had a leg amputated in prison because of diabetes.
The state conducted its first execution last week after a nearly 12-year hiatus. Initially, Gov. Asa Hutchinson scheduled four double executions over an 11-day period in April. The eight executions would have been the most by a state in such a compressed period since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976. The state said the executions needed to be carried out before its supply of midazolam, one lethal injection drug, expires on April 30.
The first three executions were canceled because of court decisions, then inmate Ledell Lee was executed last week.
Williams’ “morbid obesity makes it likely that either the IV line cannot be placed or that it will be placed in error, thus causing substantial damage (like a collapsed lung),” his attorneys wrote in a court filing asking justices to block the execution.
Both men were served last meals on Monday afternoon, Arkansas Department of Correction spokesman Solomon Graves said. Jones had fried chicken, potato logs with tartar sauce, beef jerky bites, three candy bars, a chocolate milkshake and fruit punch. Williams had fried chicken, banana pudding, nachos, two sodas and potato logs with ketchup, Graves said.
Before Lee’s execution Thursday, Arkansas hadn’t put an inmate to death since 2005. In several of the 31 states where executions are legal, drug shortages have often forced delays as manufacturers prohibit their use in executions. Arkansas believes that secrecy it grants to suppliers can solve that problem, though it still has difficulty obtaining the drugs. Courts have also forced rewrites of Arkansas’ lethal injection protocols, causing further delays. Jones and Williams committed their crimes more than two decades ago.
In recent pleadings before state and federal courts, the inmates said the three drugs Arkansas uses to execute prisoners — midazolam, vecuronium bromide and potassium chloride — could be ineffective because of their poor health.
Jones, 52, lost a leg to diabetes and was on insulin. Williams, 46, weighs 400 pounds, is diabetic and has concerns that the execution team might not be able to find a suitable vein to support an intravenous line.
The poor health of both men, their lawyers claimed, could make it difficult for them to respond during a consciousness check following a megadose of midazolam. The state shouldn’t risk giving them drugs to stop their lungs and hearts if they aren’t unconscious, they have told courts.
The last state to put more than one inmate to death on the same day was Texas, which executed two killers in August 2000. Oklahoma planned a double execution in 2014 but scrapped plans for the second one after the execution of Clayton Lockett went awry.
Arkansas executed four men in an eight-day period in 1960. The only quicker pace included quadruple executions in 1926 and 1930.
Williams was sent to death row for the 1994 rape and killing of 22-year-old Stacy Errickson, whom he kidnapped from a gas station in central Arkansas.
Authorities said Williams abducted and raped two other women in the days before he was arrested in Errickson’s death. Williams admitted responsibility to the state Parole Board last month.
“I wish I could take it back, but I can’t,” Williams told the board.
Jones was given the death penalty for the 1995 rape and killing of Mary Phillips. He strangled her with the cord to a coffee pot.
In a letter earlier this month, Jones said he was ready to be killed by the state. The letter, which his attorney read aloud at his clemency hearing, went on to say: “I shall not ask to be forgiven, for I haven’t the right.”
Including Jones, eight people have been executed in the United States this year, four in Texas, two in Arkansas and one each in Missouri and Virginia. Last year, 20 people were executed, down from 98 in 1999 and the lowest number since 14 in 1991, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Fighting in western Mosul has been intensifying in recent weeks as Iraqi troops, backed by Shia and Kurdish militias as well as airstrikes from the US-led coalition, close in on the Old City, a stronghold of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
As it loses territory, IS has told the local population that the approaching forces will kill or imprison them in an attempt to deter people fleeing. But when this doesn’t work, the militant group has turned to mass executions of would-be refugees. In the latest incident, 50 civilians were executed in western Mosul on Saturday, a local source told Alsumaria News.
Another witness, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters he found a relative’s mutilated body left hanging on an electric pole in the Tenek district, along with three others who tried to flee.
“Their appearance was shocking. We weren’t able to get them down and they have been there for two days,” he said.
A woman who successfully made it out of IS-occupied territory described her narrow escape.
“They took our bags thinking there was gold or money in them and as they were busy checking the contents, we fled through the houses taking advantage of the pitch darkness,” she told Reuters. “I fear those families who stayed in Daesh’s [pejorative term for IS] grip met a terrible fate.”
The Kurdistan Regional Security Council has said that 140 civilians were killed trying to flee IS-controlled areas on Monday and Tuesday.

US military sources say that IS is using the civilian population as human shields in order to maximize casualties, giving the militants a propaganda boost.
“They brought the civilians back into the fight,” Brig. Gen. John Richardson, a coalition deputy commanding general in Irbil, told the Stars and Stripes, adding that Iraqi soldiers had recently found nine headless bodies at a traffic circle, along with a sign threatening more killings if anyone else tried to flee. “They’re actually telling them to stay in the neighborhoods.”
Some 150,000 civilians have fled the city, with a further 600,000 still in Mosul, 400,000 of whom are trapped in the embattled Old City, according to the United Nations.
But while the US-led forces might shift the responsibility for civilian casualties onto IS, scores have been reportedly dying in coalition airstrikes as well. In March, a Pentagon spokesman admitted the US “probably had a role” in a single bombing that killed around 240 people alone.
“You know that at the end of the missile there are four flaps, on that cartridge was written ‘made in USA’,” one man, who lost his wife and whose four-year-old child was left badly disfigured in separate airstrikes, told RT.

A Syrian refugee is on trial in western Austria for allegedly murdering at least 20 unarmed or wounded Syrian government soldiers during the Syrian civil war, local media reported.
The trial for the 27-year-old man began in the city of Innsbruck in Tyrol state on Wednesday. He was arrested in June 2016 after allegedly boasting about the killings to a fellow Syrian at a refugee center.
The accused was a member of the Farouq Brigades, a group that is a part of the Free Syrian Army, which was operating in the city of Homs in Aleppo Province, Kronen Zeitung reported. The organization is now largely defunct.
The Syrian refugee is accused of allegedly killing at least 20 wounded and unarmed Syrian Army soldiers in the city of Homs and the near-by village of Al-Khalidiyah between 2013 and 2014.
“The accused is not being prosecuted for his contribution to combat operations, nor for being a member of a terrorist organization,” the prosecutor stated in his opening remarks, as cited by Kronen Zeitung. “He is accused of shooting dead enemy soldiers on the ground.”
The man initially admitted to the killings, but later recanted his confession. In the meantime, one witness reported that he had seen the suspect in Syria as a fighter. The trial will resume on March 28 due to the suspect’s health.
The Syrian was arrested in June of 2016 along with two Iraqi refugees, aged 19 and 28, who were accused of being members of terrorist groups. One of them was also said to have committed murders.
At the time, the authorities said that the Syrians had arrived via the Balkan route back in 2015, and Tyrol state’s governor, Gunther Platter, called for the full “severity of law” to fall on the refugees.
“We will not allow terrorists to come to our country and endanger our security,” he stressed.
