Nebraska used a lethal injection of four drugs in a never-before-tried combination, including the powerful opioid fentanyl, to carry out its first execution in more than two decades.

Asay, 53, who was convicted of double murder in 1987, was pronounced dead at the state prison in Starke at 6:22pm Thursday. His murder convictions are based on the shootings of Robert Lee Booker, 34, and Robert McDowell, 26. Booker was a black man and McDowell was mixed white and Hispanic.

Etomidate, the anesthetic used to end Asay’s life, had been approved for lethal injections by the Florida Supreme Court, but doctors hired by Asay’s attorneys say the previously unused drug causes pain and involuntary writhing, according to the Guardian.

Earlier Thursday, the high court rejected Asay’s final appeal to avoid his execution without issuing a comment.

Asay hired McDowell, who at the time was a prostitute dressing like a woman. When Asay found out McDowell’s true gender, he killed him, prosecutors said. And when Asay murdered Booker, he purportedly made racist comments toward him.

In an August 23 interview with WJXT’s Tom Wills, Asay acknowledged that he shot and killed McDowell in a drunken rage he does not remember, but Asay denied being a racist and killing Booker.

Asay was asked his thoughts on the August 12 “Unite The Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that ended with the death of a counter-demonstrator.

“I think it’s foolishness,” he said. “I think it’s time that people come together and accept that it’s just ignorance.”

Asay said in the interview that he had white supremacist tattoos, such as a swastika, but said he only had the ink done to protect himself in jail at the age of 19. Asay stated that he had since covered up, burned or removed the ones on his body that he could reach.

Asay said he was not afraid of dying because he was a born-again Christian. He had also been seeking spiritual guidance from a black man named Norman Smith of Calvary Chapel in Melbourne, Florida.

Smith said Asay admitted to hurling racial epithets at Booker before he murdered him, but mentioned that he was drunk and angry, not a racist.

Smith spent two hours with Asay before he was put to death and the two spoke about the comments he made when killing Booker.

“Until I heard that, I would’ve never known that this man was tagged as a racist,” Smith said.

Before Thursday’s execution, Asay was asked if he wanted to make a final statement before he was put to death, to which he responded, “No sir, I do not. Thank you,” according to WTOP.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Corrections Department, Michelle Glady, said there were no complications during the execution, and Asay did not speak as it transpired.

The execution was Florida’s first since the practice was halted by the US Supreme Court in the state after finding Florida’s methods for sentencing people to execution were unconstitutional.

The key Greene evidence0:38

AFL: This incident from 2015 involving Luke Parker should end up being a guide to what Toby Greene will receive from the MRP.

Josh Kelly of the Giants has been linked with St Kilda.

Ben WaterworthFOX SPORTS

TRIPLE premiership Lion Jonathan Brown believes St Kilda must be prepared to give up its best bargaining chips to acquire Josh Kelly, even if that means surrendering its two first-round selections to strike a deal with the GWS Giants.

The Saints currently have two top-10 selections in this year’s national draft, holding Pick 8 — their first natural selection — as well as Pick 7 — Hawthorn’s first selection that was acquired during last year’s trade period.

St Kilda has been consistently linked to the out-of-contract Kelly, who has developed into one of the prime midfielders in the competition this season. He looms as a potential gap-filler for a Saints on-ball brigade crying out for a superstar.

According to the Official AFL Player Ratings via Champion Data, the Saints only have one player inside top 50 over the past two seasons, with Jack Steven coming in at No. 21 — and that’s after dipping a few spots this season.

Asked on Fox Footy’s On The Couch whether the Saints should give up their two first-rounders for Kelly, Brown said: “They do as far as I’m concerned.”

Brown added that the Saints desperately need a star midfielder and should be prepared to make a bold deal, just like Collingwood did for Adam Treloar nearly two years ago.

“Someone made a point today, is there a St Kilda player in the top 30 players in the league? It’s a fair point,” Brown said.

“Jack Steven hasn’t set the world on fire, Seb Ross has been pretty good … but the very top-end elite players — are they there?

“I think if it’s Pick 7 and (8), I’m doing that for Josh Kelly. I think that’s pretty good form.

“If Collingwood did it for (Adam) Treloar, I think that’s reasonable market value.”

However Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd earlier in the night disagreed with the potential trade.

While Lloyd admitted the Saints are desperately in need of some “class”, but said giving up two first-round selections — especially after trading into the first round last year — was a big risk.

“It’s a big call. You’ve probably got to assess the draft … it’s Picks 7 and 8 at this stage, but it’s a lot to give up for one player,” Lloyd told 3AW’s Sportsday.

“I’d still take Picks 7 and 8 over Josh Kelly.”

–

In rallying, a handbrake turn is extremely useful for getting your car to rotate around a tight corner and keep momentum. By locking up the rear wheels, the driver can slow the car, slide the rear end out, and get the front end pointed in the proper direction without having to brake excessively and lose valuable speed. This video shows you how to pull off the maneuver yourself.

–

Piloting a Ford Fiesta ST equipped with gravel tires, Wyatt Knox of the Team O’Neil rally school in New Hampshire put together a clip laying out the basics of performing a turn using the emergency brake. He demonstrates the method in a slow-speed bend, showing us exterior and in-car views of the maneuver.

–

Knox points out that even though it’s an “emergency” brake, the handbrake actually acts a lot like a normal foot pedal, with consistent travel that increases braking pressure as you pull harder. Depending on the corner, a full tug on the lever might not even be necessary to get the car pointed around.

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Let Knox explain the ins and outs of a handbrake turn:

Game of Thrones season 7 spoiler: Will Jon Snow EXECUTE sister Sansa Stark for the crown? https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-7-spoiler-will-jon-snow-execute-sister-sansa-stark-for-the-crown/ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-7-spoiler-will-jon-snow-execute-sister-sansa-stark-for-the-crown/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 01:34:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-7-spoiler-will-jon-snow-execute-sister-sansa-stark-for-the-crown/

The 30-year-old actor, who plays Jon Snow in the HBO hit series, has admitted his character will become increasingly frustrated with his sister Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner).

Viewers saw the siblings finally reunite at the end of season six after years apart and it appears there will be some tension between the two as Sansa questions Jon’s ability to be King in the North.

“I think Sansa twists him in a way that no one else can. She infuriates him, she speaks up at times when it’s more helpful for him for her to not speak up,” Kit told Indiewire.

And as the eldest living legitimate heir of father Ned Stark, Sansa could be Jon’s biggest threat to the crown.

He continued: “As a leader you can’t have someone question you. But when it’s your sister there’s not much you can do about that. What are you meant to do? Punish your sister or execute your sister?

“So she’s a real challenge for him and she knows that. She knows she’s cleverer than Jon, in many ways.”

Will Jon Snow be forced to execute his sister to succeed as ruler of the North and destroy the White Walkers?

However, Sansa could be the one to take out Jon instead as actor Kit warned viewers not to expect the King in the North to survive the upcoming season.

He said: “I felt quite safe in Season 6, a little less safe this season. We need to know Jon Snow is in genuine peril otherwise the whole point of this TV show is lost.

“We know everyone’s in peril. So don’t expect him to be in Season 8; he might not be.”

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on July 16 and will be simulcast in the UK at 2am on Sky Atlantic. Catch up on season one to seven on NOW TV.

Virginia to execute 'mentally ill' inmate despite calls for clemency https://briefnews.eu/virginia-to-execute-mentally-ill-inmate-despite-calls-for-clemency/ https://briefnews.eu/virginia-to-execute-mentally-ill-inmate-despite-calls-for-clemency/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2017 21:52:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/virginia-to-execute-mentally-ill-inmate-despite-calls-for-clemency/ Virginia’s governor has rejected calls to spare the life of convicted killer William Morva, despite his mental disorder, as well as appeals to halt the execution from the daughter of one of his victims.

Morva’s lawyers insist that he is suffering from a severe mental illness that the jury were not aware of when they sentenced him to death.

Jailed in 2005 for trying to rob a convenience store, Morva escaped a year later when he was taken to the hospital to treat an injury. At the hospital, he overpowered an officer and took his gun, with which he killed an unarmed hospital guard Derrick McFarland, a father of two.

Before he was captured Morva also fatally shot Montgomery County Sheriff Eric Sutphin, in the back of his head. The late sheriff’s daughter, Rachel Sutphin, has urged Virginia’s Democratic Governor, Terry McAuliffe, to halt the execution of her father’s killer.

“I am against the death penalty for religious and moral reasons,” Sutphin said in an email to reporters as quoted by CBS News. “I have fought and will continue to fight for clemency for all death row inmates until Virginia declares the death penalty unconstitutional. I have sent my own letter to the Governor showing my support for clemency.”

However, other family members of Morva’s victims do not share that view. Sheriff Sutchin’s mother said the execution would bring “justice for my son,” according to The Roanoke Times.

Morva escaped and shot the two men because he believed someone in jail wanted him to die, according to his lawyers. After the jury sentenced Morva to death, he was diagnosed with delusional disorder, a severe mental illness akin to schizophrenia that makes it impossible for him to distinguish between delusions and reality, his attorneys said.

Prosecutors maintain that it was established during trial that Morva suffered from a variety of personality disorders, and yet the jury decided that the inmate was able to comprehend the consequences of his actions.

Governor McAuliffe said in a statement: “At the conclusion of that review, I have determined that Mr. Morva was given a fair trial and that the jury heard substantial evidence about his mental health as they prepared to sentence him in accordance with the law of our Commonwealth.”

McAuliffe added, “In short, the record before me does not contain sufficient evidence to warrant the extraordinary step of overturning the decision of a lawfully empaneled jury following a properly conducted trial.”

On Wednesday, two United Nations human rights experts called on McAuliffe to stop the execution. As did a group of Virginia clergy, a dozen state lawmakers and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Following his conviction trial, Morva went on a courtroom rant saying, “There are others like me, and I hope you know that. And soon they’re going to get together. They’re going to sweep over your whole civilization, and they’re going to wipe these smiles off your faces forever.”

McFarland’s widow, Cindy, shouted at him, “You deserve to burn in hell!”

Morva is set to be executed through lethal injection. Recent changes in Virginia’s execution protocol mean that he would remain shielded from the view of his attorney and media witnesses until after IV lines with lethal drugs have been inserted in his veins.

Execution through lethal injection has been under scrutiny in states that have capital punishment regimes after a number of botched executions. In Ohio, executions had been suspended for months pending a federal appeals court decision which last month ruled in the state’s favor and allowed it to resume executions using the method.

Philippines’ death toll tops 100 as besieged ISIS-linked terrorists execute ‘betrayers’ (GRAPHIC) https://briefnews.eu/philippines-death-toll-tops-100-as-besieged-isis-linked-terrorists-execute-betrayers-graphic/ https://briefnews.eu/philippines-death-toll-tops-100-as-besieged-isis-linked-terrorists-execute-betrayers-graphic/#respond Mon, 29 May 2017 03:48:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/philippines-death-toll-tops-100-as-besieged-isis-linked-terrorists-execute-betrayers-graphic/ The death toll in the Philippines city of Marawi has exceed 100 people, including at least 27 civilians and 61 terrorists. Some 2,000 people reportedly remain trapped as ISIS-linked Maute militants mercilessly kill “betrayers” who try to flee the city.

At least 27 civilians have been killed in Marawi since Maute fighters, aligned with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), raided the city last Tuesday.

This figure includes the latest victims – eight males, whose bodies were discovered with gunshot wounds to their heads on a roadside in the outskirts of Marawi on Sunday. According to locals, the victims were civilians who worked at a rice mill and a medical college and had attempted to flee the city.

A signed note attached to one of the men indicated that the victims had “betrayed their faith,” police officer Jamail Mangadang told the Philippine Star.

In another discovery, the bodies of four men, three women and a child were found on Saturday near a university in the city.

“These are civilians, women. These terrorists are anti-people. We found their bodies while conducting rescue operations,” regional military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera said, according to Manila Standard.

In addition to the civilian casualties, Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said a total of 11 soldiers and four police officers have been killed since the fierce fighting erupted last Tuesday.

The military says it has killed at least 61 Maute fighters, bringing the total death toll to over 100 people.

The militants seemed significantly weakened by the ongoing military operation and are showing less resistance, but still pose grave danger to locals, Padilla said.

“We believe they’re now low on ammunition and food,” he said. “Compared to the initial days, there has been increasingly less resistance from the militants within Marawi.”

In tandem to the military onslaught, the army was also carrying out rescues operations, freeing civilians trapped in jihadist-held areas and bringing them to safety.

“We have successfully rescued and assisted 124 trapped civilian residents since the start of the operations,” Padilla said.

President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law across the southern part of the Philippines after IS-linked militants stormed the city last Tuesday.

Most of the predominantly Muslim city’s 200,000 residents have fled since the fighting began, but an estimated 2,000 people still remain cornered in areas controlled by the militants.

“They have been sending us text messages, calling our hotline, requesting us to send rescue teams but we cannot simply go to areas which are inaccessible to us,” said Zia Alonto Adiong, spokesman for the provincial crisis management committee.

“They want to leave. They are afraid for their safety. Some are running out of food to eat. They fear they will be hit by bullets, by airstrikes,” he added.

The military intensified its air campaign on parts of Marawi over the weekend as ground troops engaged in street battles with the militants.

Philippines government officials also said that the Maute group confronting the army was no longer considered a local terrorist organization as many Malaysian, Indonesian and “other nationalities” have joined their ranks.

Driving out terrorists from the Philippines has become Duterte’s personal crusade who promised to resign if extremists prove him incapable of maintaining peace in his country.

“As president, if I cannot confront them, I will resign,” Duterte said last week. “If I am incompetent and incapable of keeping order in this country, let me step down and give the job to somebody else.”
