Japanese prosecutors have demanded the top three executives at Tokyo Electric Power Company receive five-year prison sentences for failing to take measures to prevent the disastrous triple meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Ex-TEPCO chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata and former vice presidents Ichiro Takekuro and Sakae Muto have all pleaded not guilty to charges of professional negligence resulting in death and injury, claiming they could not have anticipated the tsunami that triggered the catastrophic meltdown – and that even if they had implemented preventative measures, they wouldn’t have been sufficient to prevent the disaster.

All three executives were told years before the accident that a tsunami could hit the plant, triggering just the sort of catastrophe that culminated in the 2011 meltdown, the prosecution claimed. Not only did the executives not attempt any preventative measures, but they didn’t even try to gather further information about how such an event might endanger the plant.

“It was easy to safeguard the plant against tsunami, but they kept operating the plant heedlessly,” the prosecution argued. “That led to the deaths of many people.” The trio faces responsibility for the deaths of 44 people, including 13 hospital patients forced to evacuate themselves amidst the chaos.

The executives claimed they had not been informed of the tsunami risk, opting to shift blame onto their underlings, according to NHK. 

While the Fukushima meltdown took place seven years ago, the prosecution has only just now delivered its sentencing recommendations in a trial that nearly did not happen. Public prosecutors twice chose not to seek indictments against the TEPCO brass, but an independent citizens’ panel pushed for a trial.

Last year, Fukushima victims won a landmark class action suit that found TEPCO officials had not adequately prepared for potential disasters. A $ 4.5 million payout was split among 3,800 plaintiffs.

The chain-reaction Fukushima disaster, beginning with an earthquake, leading to a tsunami and culminating in the worst meltdown since Chernobyl, is believed to have killed 19,000 people. The radiation released from that catastrophe has also begun taking its toll, with the first official radiation death tallied in September. The area surrounding Fukushima is still highly radioactive, and 30,000 people have been unable to return to their homes.

San Francisco’s biggest tech employer, Salesforce, is not mincing words when it comes to the city’s homelessness crisis.

The cloud computing company, and its CEO Marc Benioff, have donated a combined $ 7.9 million to Proposition C, a ballot measure in San Francisco that would tax the city’s largest corporations to help fix San Francisco’s ongoing homelessness problem. Benioff has spent the past few weeks openly clashing with other San Francisco tech bigwigs, including Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter and Square, who is opposed to Prop C.

A US senator has proposed a privacy law that could issue steep fines to companies and send their top executives to prison for up to 20 years if they violate Americans’ privacy.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore. announced a discussion draft of his Consumer Data Protection Act yesterday. The bill would establish new privacy rules that major companies must follow and establish fines and prison sentences big enough to make even the largest companies take notice.

Consumers would have the right to opt out of systems that share their data with third parties. Companies that don’t follow the proposed law could be fined up to 4 percent of annual revenue on their first offense. The FTC currently is unable to fine first-time corporate offenders, and “fines for subsequent violations of the law are tiny, and not a credible deterrent,” Wyden’s bill summary says.

Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates has definitively been the richest guy in Silicon Valley since “Friends” first aired on television. But leave it to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to dethrone the king and blow the rankings out of the water with a fortune that now tops $ 150 billion.

Although you can be sure that Forbes’ annual list of the 400 wealthiest Americans will be loaded with hedge fund execs and investment firm founders, tech executives have steadily infiltrated the ranks and made their way up the chart.

The 400 Americans who made Forbes’ list this year averaged a net worth of $ 7.2 billion — an estimated half a billion more than last year. To simply make the list, these billionaires needed a net worth of at least $ 2.1 billion. That still left more than 200 billionaires out of the rankings, according to Forbes.

The 2018 list, released Wednesday, has the seasoned founders of well-established tech companies, but also features some new names. Included in the rankings are the founders of file-sharing platform Dropbox, e-commerce site Wayfair, blockchain-based company Ripple, and e-mail provider MailChimp.

Here are the 25 wealthiest tech executives in the U.S. in 2018:

25. John Tu & David Sun, co-founders of Kingston Technology

Net worth: $ 5.4 billion each

Change from 2017 ranking: –36

Net worth in 2017: $ 6 billion

Although the net worth of Kingston’s co-founders did drop by more than a half billion in the last year, the company remains one of the largest providers of USB drives, SD cards, and just about any other memory-storing product.

24. Travis Kalanick, co-founder of Uber

Net worth: $ 5.9 billion

Change from 2017 ranking: +11

Net worth in 2017: $ 5.1 billion

Kalanick’s spot in the Forbes 2017 list dramatically dropped when Uber essentially imploded, and the co-founder was forced out of his role as the company’s CEO. Kalanick has since taken charge of a small real-estate startup and made up some ground in this year’s rankings.

23. Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter & Square

Net worth: $ 6.3 billion

Change from 2017 ranking: +274

Net worth in 2017: $ 2.2 billion

Dorsey made one of the biggest leaps up this year’s list, thanks to shares of Square — a mobile payments company — rising exponentially in the past year.

  • New York City-based falafel chain Taïm is poised to take over Manhattan.
  • Founders Einat Admony and Stefan Nafziger have partnered with an investment group spearheaded by Chipotle veterans to plot an expansion.

After more than a decade in business, beloved New York City-based falafel chain Taïm is starting to expand. 

Chef Einat Admony and Stefan Nafziger opened their first Taïm (pronounced “tah-eem,” Hebrew for “tasty” or “delicious”) restaurant in 2005. The fast-casual chain stays true to its founders’ roots by specializing in Israeli food, serving falafel, hummus, and Israeli salad on pita or as a platter. It also serves a variety of salads, french fries, and other side dishes.

There are three Taïm restaurants operating in Manhattan, with an additional two in the works. The West Village location was the first to open, followed by outposts in Nolita and now, Midtown East, at the Urbanspace Food Hall. The Financial and Flatiron Districts will be the next neighborhoods to welcome the Israeli chain, with the Financial District location set to open in early July.

Eventually, Taïm will likely expand beyond New York and into other markets such as Washington, DC, according to Restaurant Hospitality. To aid in its expansion, the founders of Taïm have partnered with an investment group spearheaded by Chipotle vets Phil Petrilli and Bethany Strong.

Federal prosecutors in Arizona unsealed a 61-page, 93-count criminal indictment of seven men accused of running an online prostitution ring through the website Backpage, which was seized and shuttered last week by authorities.

The seven suspects, who have all been arrested, were charged with conspiracy, facilitating prostitution, and money laundering, among other accusations.

“For far too long, Backpage.com existed as the dominant marketplace for illicit commercial sex, a place where sex traffickers frequently advertised children and adults alike,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. “But this illegality stops right now.”
