Ryan Murphy is expanding the American Horror Story universe to include a limited attention span-friendly spinoff series.

The uber producer announced early Monday on social media that he is moving forward with American Horror Stories, an offshoot of the FX anthology franchise that would consist of “one-hour contained episodes,” per Murphy. The new series will also air on FX, an insider confirms.

Murphy first broke the news to his primary American Horror Story cast members in a Zoom call, during which he also revealed “when we will start filming the next season of the mothership…and other stuff I cannot print.” (Murphy did not make the actual AHS Zoom reunion public.)

The news comes just one week after Murphy revealed that AHS‘s upcoming 10th season — production of which has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic — may be pushed back a full year. “A lot of what I was going to shoot was dependent on a very specific moment,” Murphy told The Wrap. “It was a weather-dependent show. So now I don’t know. I don’t know what we’re going to do. I don’t know what I’m gonna do next with that show. I don’t know if I’ll accelerate another season or wait till next year to shoot this one.”

Check out Murphy’s Instagram post below.

A member of the UK parliament who recently ordered the seizure of a cache of internal Facebook documents has shown no signs of backing down.

Meanwhile, a California county judge is irked that documents that he ordered kept secret under a protective order have now been shared abroad.

The years-long legal dispute between Facebook and the tiny app company Six4Three has now intersected with an ongoing British investigation into Facebook’s privacy practices—resulting in a strange twist.

Costco exec says the company still pays better than any rival following Amazon’s decision to raise wages to $15 per hour (COST) https://briefnews.eu/costco-exec-says-the-company-still-pays-better-than-any-rival-following-amazons-decision-to-raise-wages-to-15-per-hour-cost/ https://briefnews.eu/costco-exec-says-the-company-still-pays-better-than-any-rival-following-amazons-decision-to-raise-wages-to-15-per-hour-cost/#respond Fri, 05 Oct 2018 11:52:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/costco-exec-says-the-company-still-pays-better-than-any-rival-following-amazons-decision-to-raise-wages-to-15-per-hour-cost/ Costco worker employeeTim Boyle / Getty Images

  • Costco is unconcerned about losing potential employees to Amazon despite the e-commerce giant’s higher minimum wage.
  • CFO Richard Galanti said that Costco’s average pay still “dwarfs any other retail or retail-type entity out there” in a call with investors on Thursday.
  • According to Galanti, Costco workers make an average of roughly $ 22.50 per hour, with employees who have been at the retailer for years making into the mid-$ 40 to $ 50 range.
  • On Tuesday, Amazon announced plans to raise minimum wage to $ 15 per hour, following Costco raising its minimum wage to $ 14 earlier this year.

Costco’s executives are confident the retailer is still on top when it comes to workers’ pay and benefits — even after Amazon’s much publicized wage increases.

“Our average US hourly wage is in the mid-22s, $ 22.50 roughly, which we believe dwarfs any other retail or retail-type entity out there on a big scale,” Costco’s CFO Richard Galanti said on a call with investors on Thursday.

How a Marvel exec and 2 other Mar-a-Lago cronies are secretly shaping the Trump administration’s VA policies https://briefnews.eu/how-a-marvel-exec-and-2-other-mar-a-lago-cronies-are-secretly-shaping-the-trump-administrations-va-policies/ https://briefnews.eu/how-a-marvel-exec-and-2-other-mar-a-lago-cronies-are-secretly-shaping-the-trump-administrations-va-policies/#respond Wed, 08 Aug 2018 01:10:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-a-marvel-exec-and-2-other-mar-a-lago-cronies-are-secretly-shaping-the-trump-administrations-va-policies/ Department of Veterans AffairsCharles Dharapak/AP

  • Ike Perlmutter, the chairman of Marvel Entertainment and a longtime acquaintance of President Donald Trump, is leading an informal council that is exerting sweeping influence on the Veterans Affairs Department from Mar-a-Lago.
  • None of the informal council’s three members has ever served in the US military or government.
  • They have remained hidden except to a few VA insiders, who have come to call them “the Mar-a-Lago Crowd.”
  • The Mar-a-Lago Crowd spoke with VA officials daily, according to documents obtained by a Freedom of Information Act request.
  • They reviewed all manner of policy and personnel decisions, and prodded the VA to start new programs.
  • “Everyone has to go down and kiss the ring,” a former administration official said of the group.

Last February, shortly after Peter O’Rourke became chief of staff for the Department of Veterans Affairs, he received an email from Bruce Moskowitz with his input on a new mental health initiative for the VA. “Received,” O’Rourke replied. “I will begin a project plan and develop a timeline for action.”

O’Rourke treated the email as an order, but Moskowitz is not his boss. In fact, he is not even a government official. Moskowitz is a Palm Beach doctor who helps wealthy people obtain high-service “concierge” medical care.

In 25 years, the items in your grocery basket could be as high-tech as the smartphone in your pocket.

Alpha Food Labs, a New York-based company that makes prototypes of future supermarket staples, has a new list of “concept foods” its team is incubating — some in partnership with existing food companies, some purely theoretical for now. If Alpha is successful, we’ll soon be munching on lab-grown burgers, genetically modified chips, and 30 other sci-fi inspired snacks.

“The Future Market,” as Alpha’s prototyping lab is called, is helmed by Mike Lee, a food industry veteran who once led product development at Chobani. We asked Lee to break down five ideas he’s using to shake up traditional (read: unsustainable) means of production, and to spark systemic change.

“People are gravitating toward a number of new ideas,” he says. “We’re working at how to commercialize and make them a reality.”

The following five foods are all conceptual for now, but also totally feasible, says Lee, whose team has assigned a likely price and a possible tagline for each item. Here’s what could be on your plate by 2043.

Polyculture Polenta

The Alpha Food Labs

  • Likely price: $ 6.99
  • Potential tagline: “Polyculture Polenta Flavored by Nature”

American farmers typically plant the same one or two crops every year — a process that robs soil of precious nutrients. Soon, Lee predicts, more farmers will switch to biodiverse agricultural techniques like “companion planting,” coupling certain vegetables for efficiency and pest control, and will be rewarded with tastier, fuller harvests.

This polenta product uses beans, squash, and corn that were all grown in the same patch. “The idea,” Lee says, “is a tasty consumer proposition that’s better for soil health, and farmers along the supply chain.”

Faux Fin Soup

The Alpha Food Labs

  • Likely price: $ 88.88
  • Potential tagline: “Celebrate with Cell Ag”

Shark fin soup is a controversial delicacy. It’s a staple at Chinese weddings and holiday meals — but critics say the dish’s popularity incentivizes brutal fishing practices, and has led to dwindling shark populations around the world.

“Cellular agriculture” — a technique scientists are already using to grow meat from animal cells — offers a mind-blowing alternative: PETA-friendly fin soup grown in a petri dish.

Having a concrete illustration helps potential consumers understand what’s actually a fairly simple solution to traditional meat production, Lee says. “The idea of lab-grown meat is technically and conceptually difficult,” he says. “The depiction of a commercial product makes it more tangible.”

Potato CRISPRs

The Alpha Food Labs

  • Likely price:$ 2.75
  • Potential tagline: “The perfect potato”

CRISPR, a new gene editing technology, has been touted as a broadly applicable technology that can do everything from preventing birth defects to preserving endangered species.

It’s got the food world hyped too: Scientists are already using CRISPR to create mushrooms that don’t brown, and drought-tolerant soybeans. In the case of chips, CRISPR could help companies produce potatoes with specific textures or tastes.

“CRISPR is a very efficient way to go in and turn different genes on and off,” Lee says. “It can be used on foods that have super mass appeal … like the ideal potato chip.”

  • Facebook’s security boss Alex Stamos called on Facebook to make some major changes in the wake of its string of scandals in March 2018.
  • BuzzFeed News has published an internal memo in which the exec argues that the company needs to collect less user data and listen to people’s concerns about it being “creepy.”

Alex Stamos, Facebook’s head of security, called for radical overhaul in how Facebook operates in a leaked memo from March 2018, as the company reeled from a chain of ugly scandals.

In the nearly-1,700-word memo, which was published by BuzzFeed News on Tuesday, the chief security officer called for Facebook to collect less user data, stop focusing on growth, and to listen to concerns when people think a feature is “creepy.”

Anthony Levandowski, one of the most controversial figures in the self-driving car business, is connected to a new driverless truck startup, TechCrunch has reported. Called Kache.ai, the company is still in stealth mode, so little is known about its technology or business model.

What we do know is that Kache’s incorporation documents list an address in St. Helena, California that—according to TechCrunch—is owned by Levandowski’s father and stepmother. “Kǎchē” is “truck” in Chinese.

We also know a lot about Levandowski. He was involved in the DARPA Grand Challenge competitions more than a decade ago. Later, he was a key figure in Google’s self-driving car program before he left to start the self-driving truck startup Otto in 2016. Within months of its founding, Otto was acquired by Uber, and Levandowski was put in charge of Uber’s driverless car program.
