Ever since viewers discovered the truth about Moira’s (played by Natalie J. Robb) true role in Emma Barton’s (Gillian Kearney) murder on the ITV soap, the farmer has been struggling to keep it together, even buying heroin from her dead daughter’s former drug dealer.

After Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) convinced the mother of his newborn baby Isaac to let her eldest son Adam (Adam Thomas) take the blame for the horrific crime, vicar Harriet has been sniffing ever closer to the truth.

Finally deciding to take matters into her own hands and confront Moira, Harriet (Katherine Dow Blyton) managed to get the real story in the church where Emma used to frequent.

“I can listen I’m your friend. Whatever it is you can tell me, was it you Moira, did you kill Emma?” she pleaded, as the guilty mother began to sob.

“He said he was protecting me, but he isn’t he’s killing me,” Moira eventually admitted. “Cain persuaded Adam to take the blame for something I’d done, said that Isaac needed me, said I wouldn’t cope, and here I am letting it all happen.

“What sort of person does that make me? Adam didn’t kill anyone, I did. I killed Emma, I pushed her off that viaduct and now she’s dead. You still think you can help me?”

Devastated by the realisation that her boyfriend was instrumental in sending Adam to prison, a furious Harriet stormed over to hear Cain’s side of the story. But will it be enough to stop the former police woman doing her duty to society?

While Cain still attempted to maintain his original cover, he gave in when it was clear Harriet would no longer be trifled with.

Harriet exclaimed: “You in your infinite wisdom think it’s ok for an innocent man to take the rap? What is wrong with you? I can’t believe this is happening,” adding: “So why cover, is it because you still love her?”

Watching his girlfriend storm off, Cain’s expression turned to terror as he called after her: “Harriet what are you gonna do?”

Will Harriet, reeling from Cain’s betrayal, report Moira to the police? Or is the soap’s Emma Barton plot about to get even more complicated?

Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm on ITV.

The former South Carolina police officer Michael Slager will be sentenced and fined this week in the federal civil rights case over the the shooting death of Walter Scott, an unarmed black man who fled a traffic stop in 2015.

Slager’s murder trial ended in a hung jury in December 2016. In May, he pleaded guilty to a federal charge of violating Scott’s civil rights, under a plea deal that dropped state charges and two other federal charges.

Slager was a North Charleston police officer on April 4, 2015, when he pulled over Walter Scott’s vehicle for a broken tail light. Scott, 50, fled on foot. Slager pursued him into a nearby field before firing multiple shots into Scott’s back, killing him. The officer maintained that Scott resisted arrest and attempted to grab his gun, and that he feared for his life when he opened fire.

The officer was not wearing a body camera. However, the shooting was captured on camera by a bystander. The recording, viewed over 1 million times online, begins just seconds after Slager begins shooting and shows Scott breaking away after struggling with Slager over the officer’s Taser. Slager then began firing at Scott’s back from 17 feet away. Five out of eight bullets hit him.

The video also showed Slager picking the Taser up off the ground and dropping it near Scott’s body, in what prosecutors said during the trial was an attempt to plant evidence. Slager denied that, testifying he was following his training in accounting for his weapons.

Slager claimed the physical confrontation took place before the recording started. He was fired from the North Charleston police force when the video became public.

Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence, arguing that Slager committed second-degree murder and should be punished for obstructing justice. They say Slager repeatedly lied to authorities and in court, including not initially telling police he shot Scott in the back while he was running away.

Slager’s attorneys said the offense amounts to voluntary manslaughter. They argued Slager never lied, but the traumatic situation affected his recollection.

“A Swiss cheese memory is a symptom of stress, not an indication of lying,” his attorneys wrote in court papers, citing expert testimony.

Justin Bamberg, the attorney for the Scott family, told AP he believed Slager deserves a life sentence.

“I think everybody’s just ready to close this chapter of life and start the next chapter,” Bamberg told USA Today. “But all of them end the same way, and that is that Walter’s not here.”

Scott’s family said he owed $ 18,000 in child support and may have run for fear he would be jailed. The Coast Guard veteran and father of four had three stints in jail due to child support arrears.

The video of Scott’s shooting provoked Black Lives Matter protests nationwide. North Charleston settled a proposed wrongful death lawsuit with the Scott family for $ 6.5 million. As a result of the settlement, South Carolina lawmakers approved regulations requiring law enforcement to adopt body cameras and provided millions in state money for their purchase.

St. Louis police arrested 22 protesters at the Galleria shopping mall, where dozens gathered to march in defiance of a “not guilty” verdict for a white former police officer in the fatal shooting of a black man.

On Saturday, more than 200 people thronged to the upscale suburban area of Richmond Heights, assembling at Galleria mall to mark the 8th day of protest against the judge clearing a former policeman, Jason Stockley, in the 2011 death of 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Smith.

People passed through the mall halls, chanting “No justice, no profits!” while police closed the mall entrances, not allowing anyone in. According to St. Louis Public Radio, some protesters forced their way past the officers to climb an escalator to join those already upstairs. Some grew disorderly and began overturning trash cans.

At the time, the county police department wrote in its Twitter feed that orders to disperse were given following “destructive actions,” with arrests appearing to be “imminent.” Police reported that some in the crowd refused to leave the property.

After three orders to disperse, police began arresting the protesters, according to the Richmond Heights police department, as cited by St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Twenty-two people were arrested, while nearly 150 obeyed and “peacefully left.”

“They were getting whoever they could get, randomly. It was barbaric. It’s wrong,” one of the protesters, Tricia Harris, told St. Louis Magazine. “No one was being disruptive in any way other than chanting,” one of the shoppers, named Denise, said. “It was just scary. I’ve never witnessed anything like that.”

Two demonstrators received minor injuries and an officer was taken to the hospital for a back injury, the county police tweeted.

Protests have been going for more than a week now after judge ruled Jason Stockley not guilty of the first-degree murder of Anthony Lamar Smith.

Protesters pour into St. Louis streets after murder acquittal for ex-cop Jason Stockley https://briefnews.eu/protesters-pour-into-st-louis-streets-after-murder-acquittal-for-ex-cop-jason-stockley/ https://briefnews.eu/protesters-pour-into-st-louis-streets-after-murder-acquittal-for-ex-cop-jason-stockley/#respond Sat, 16 Sep 2017 00:53:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/protesters-pour-into-st-louis-streets-after-murder-acquittal-for-ex-cop-jason-stockley/ Jason StockleyHarris County Sheriff’s Office via Reuters

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) – Hundreds of protesters poured into St. Louis’ streets and some scuffles broke out as they voiced their anger after a Missouri judge on Friday ruled a white former St. Louis police officer was not guilty of murder in the 2011 shooting of a black man.

With the National Guard on standby in case of violence, authorities appealed to protesters to march peacefully in a state where racially charged clashes in the nearby city of Ferguson spawned the Black Lives Matter movement in 2014.

Police said a few protesters threw rocks and water bottles, while witnesses and video showed officers used pepper spray on at least five people about a block from the courthouse. About 50 riot police were on hand, blocking a ramp to a nearby highway.

Jason Stockley, 36, was acquitted of first-degree murder for killing Anthony Lamar Smith, 24. The former policeman said Smith fled in his car when he attempted to arrest him on drug charges.

Stockley and his partner chased Smith, who was shot five times in his car. The former policeman thought Smith had a gun, defense attorneys said. A gun was found in the car but prosecutors argued Stockley planted the weapon and the gun had only Stockley’s DNA on it.

After the verdict, about 600 protesters marched in downtown St. Louis, chanting “No justice, no peace” and “Hey hey! Ho ho! These killer cops have got to go!”

Some protesters held signs that read “Black Lives Matter” and “No more racist killer cops.”

Later in the evening, a group of about 300 protesters moved from the courthouse to the city’s popular restaurant neighborhood, the Central West End.

“I’m sad, I’m hurt, I’m mad,” the Reverend Clinton Stancil of the Wayman AME Church in St. Louis said by telephone. “We haven’t made any progress since Ferguson, that’s clear. Cops can still kill us with impunity.”

Stockley’s attorney, Neil Bruntrager, said the ex-officer on Friday was relieved and would seek to rebuild his life. “It’s been a long road for him,” Bruntrager said.

Judge Timothy Wilson’s ruling said the state had not proven murder beyond a reasonable doubt or even a lesser charge such as involuntary manslaughter.

The judge also doubted the prosecution’s claim the gun was planted and wrote, “Finally, the court observes, based on its nearly 30 years on the bench, that an urban heroin dealer not in possession of a firearm would be an anomaly.”

The comment sparked outrage by protesters on the street and on social media.

Wilson declined to comment.

‘This ain’t right’

In recent years grand juries have declined to charge officers involved in the 2014 fatal shooting of Michael Brown, 18, which set of nights of violent protest in Ferguson, and the choking death of Eric Garner, 43, in New York. Baltimore police officers also were not convicted in the case of Freddie Gray, who died from a broken neck suffered in a police van in 2015.

Brown’s father, Michael Brown Sr., voiced his frustration after Friday’s verdict.

“You all know this ain’t right and you all continue to do this to us,” he told a St. Louis Fox television station. “Like we don’t mean nothing, like we’re rats, trash, dogs in the streets. Right now, I’m praying for my city because my people are tired of this.”

Ben Crump, an attorney for the Brown family, said the decision would only widen the “chasm of mistrust” between law enforcement and minority communities.

“This decision will outrage many,” he told Reuters. “You see this happen over and over again.”

Prosecutor Kimberly Gardner said she was disappointed with the verdict and called on protesters to avoid violence.

“I understand the verdict has created anger and frustration for many in our community,” she told reporters at the courthouse. “I am frustrated as well. Destruction of our community is not the answer.”

Smith tried to flee from Stockley on Dec. 20, 2011, following an alleged drug deal, authorities said. During the pursuit, Stockley could be heard saying on an internal police car video he was going to kill Smith, prosecutors said.

At Stockley’s direction, the driver of the police car slammed into Smith’s vehicle and they came to a stop, court documents said. Stockley then approached Smith’s car and shot him five times with his service weapon.

Stockley waived his right to a jury trial, allowing the judge to decide. He left the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department in 2013 and was arrested last year.

Smith’s family settled a lawsuit against the city for $ 900,000 in 2013, Watkins said.

A jury in Milwaukee has acquitted former officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown of a reckless homicide charge over the fatal shooting of Sylville Smith last August. The killing sparked two days of protests on the city’s north side.

The jury, which had been in sequestration since June 13, debated for over nine hours before reaching a not-guilty verdict Wednesday.

In August 2016, Smith was shot to death by then-officer Heaggan-Brown during a foot chase in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Heaggan-Brown was charged in December with first-degree reckless homicide.

He was later arrested on unrelated sexual assault charges after meeting a man in a bar on the night of the protests following the Smith’s killing. He was officially let go by the Milwaukee police department on October 31, 2016, according to WITI.

The events unfolded on August 13 at 3:30pm when Heaggan-Brown and his partner at the time, Ndiva Malafa, pulled over Smith and another man under suspicion of drug activity. Smith reportedly ran immediately after the officers exited their vehicle.

Smith headed for a yard that had a chain link fence and hurled his gun over just as Heaggan-Brown fired his gun at Smith.

Heaggan-Brown’s first shot struck Smith’s arm, grounding him. The officer then fired a second shot through Smith’s chest as he lie on the ground. The shot pierced Smith’s lung and heart. The way the bullet hit Smith was described by doctors as “not survivable.”

During the case, one prosecutor argued that Smith was shot by Heaggan-Brown after he tried to surrender. He believes the second shot was unreasonable.

“Mr. Heaggan-Brown knew at the time that he fired that second shot that Sylville Smith had attempted to disarm himself,” said Milwaukee County District Attorney, John Chisolm, according to WISN.

Heaggan-Brown’s attorney said that his client was simply protecting himself and his partner at the time.

The protests against Heaggan-Brown played out mostly on the north side in the Sherman neighborhood of Milwaukee.

For years, Ars has been examining how surveillance technology is used in practice in Oakland, California.

In March 2015, Ars published a feature on license plate readers and what a large LPR dataset, as obtained from the Oakland Police Department, can reveal.

In January 2016, the city codified a Privacy Advisory Commission to “Provide advice and technical assistance to the City of Oakland on best practices to protect citizen privacy rights in connection with the City’s purchase and use of surveillance equipment and other technology that collects or stores citizen data.”

It is believed to be a rare instance of outside citizen-driven oversight on surveillance in a major American city. This past week, we were able to sit down with Timothy Birch, a former police officer, and current civilian employee, who serves as the commission’s liaison to the Oakland Police Department.

This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Can you tell me your name and who you are and what you do?

My name is Timothy Birch. I am the research and planning manager for the Oakland Police Department.
