The October box office has kicked off with a bang as newcomers Venom and A Star Is Born both exceeded expectations with their opening weekend box office.

Despite missing the presence of Spider-Man, the Sony Pictures comic book title Venom still raked in $ 80 million for the weekend. Meanwhile, A Star Is Born earned a little more than half that with an estimated $ 42.6 million. That’s enough to help set the record for an all-time high domestic overall box office total for the month of October. Find out more about the A Star Is Born and Venom box office below.

Box Office Mojo has the numbers for the weekend, and while both A Star Is Born and Venom overperformed, it should be noted that they were helped by having some extra screenings that most opening weekends don’t usually have. A Star Is Born had some sneak preview screenings on Tuesday and Wednesday across the country while Venom started their sneak preview screenings on Thursday night at 5pm instead of the usual 7pm. That certainly added some cash to both of the movies, but each still had great weekends.

Venom‘s total of $ 80 million makes it the best October opening of all time, surpassing Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, whch previously earned $ 55.7 million in 2013. The question is how it will hold up in its second weekend. Superhero movies like this are consistently front-loaded and see massive drops in their second weekend. However, audiences seem to be liking Venom much more than critics with the film receiving a B+ CinemaScore. So if word of mouth spreads, then more people might turn out, especially without much tentpole competition.

Internationally, Venom landed $ 125.2 million from 58 markets. It even gave Sony their second largest opening ever in Korea, coming in just behind Spider-Man: Homecoming, funnily enough. The movie still has to open in France, Japan and China, so the movie is only going to rake in more money worldwide.

Meanwhile, A Star Is Born had quite the succesful weekend as well. After an estimated opening somewhere in the mid-$ 30 million range, the movie brought in $ 42.6 million (or $ 41.25 million if you don’t include the sneak preview screenings from earlier in the week). The film is a big awards contender, so it should have some decent legs heading into October, especially if Lady Gaga fans keep seeing the movie, even if it’s not the most uplifting story to warrant repeat viewings.

Worldwide, A Star Is Born isn’t anywhere near as big of a hit as Venom with just $ 14 million from 31 markets. But it still has to open in a much of bigger markets through October, including South Korea, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, and Australia. It won’t even hit Japan until December.

You can see how the rest of the box office chart filled out at Box Office Mojo.

No Sweat: McLaren Says Its Three-Seater Will Exceed 243 MPH https://briefnews.eu/no-sweat-mclaren-says-its-three-seater-will-exceed-243-mph/ https://briefnews.eu/no-sweat-mclaren-says-its-three-seater-will-exceed-243-mph/#respond Sat, 10 Mar 2018 09:15:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-sweat-mclaren-says-its-three-seater-will-exceed-243-mph/

–

McLaren’s three-seat successor to its F1 supercar aims to at least match that legend’s top speed from 20 years ago. The floor is set: 243 mph.

–

The as-yet-unnamed BP23, a gas-electric hybrid “Hyper-GT” touted to be both “the fastest-ever and the most luxurious McLaren,” will be able to “exceed 243 mph,” the company said. It will be the next model in McLaren’s Ultimate Series after the 2019 McLaren Senna, with a reveal set before the end of the year.

–

That “fastest-ever” claim may wear an asterisk, depending on whether McLaren uses a modified, one-off version to set the fastest possible speed. There’s precedent, since the F1’s reign as the world’s fastest production car—a title it held from 1998 until the 253-mph Bugatti Veyron broke it in 2005, with us behind the wheel—isn’t without disclaimers.

–

BP23 1

–

When we tested one of the first F1s in our August 1994 issue, the then-$ 815,000 supercar pegged its 7500-rpm rev limiter at 221 mph. A year prior, using an earlier prototype, McLaren clocked 231 mph at Italy’s Nardo circuit. Then in 1998, McLaren went all-out at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track, removing the rev limiter and fitting taller gears for an insane 240.1-mph official record, as averaged from runs in opposite directions. The best run on the 5.4-mile straight—242.956 mph—is what McLaren is gunning for with the BP23, even though stock F1s couldn’t have approached that speed on the same track.

–

–

These are technicalities, but technicalities win headlines and customers. It’s a longer way still to beating the Koenigsegg Agera RS, which in November set a 277.9-mph two-way run on a closed 11-mile stretch of Nevada highway. All 106 examples of the BP23 that McLaren plans to build are already sold (at over £1.6 million each) and they’re to be manufactured late next year, which should make them 2020 models. It will be at least that long before anyone knows just how fast the final production model can go.

He said that 18 priority development territories, as well as Vladivostok Free Port, have been created within the Far East’s development program. More than 200 foreign companies have already obtained resident status, according to Trutnev, while the total amount of committed investments has already exceeded $ 63 billion.

The Ministry for the Development of the Far East has adopted 30 federal laws with more than 100 government acts issued and adopted. In addition to that, separate laws have been adopted to increase the investment attractiveness of the region and reduce the costs for investors.

“We provide infrastructural support to investment projects, build roads and power lines..,” said Trutnev.

The priority development territories in the Russian Far East provide the country’s citizens as well as foreigners with tax and customs preferences. Last year, Russia lifted Far East visa requirements for 18 countries to boost tourism and develop the region.

According to Ernst & Young (EY) CIS Managing Partner Joe Watt, there’s a lot of opportunity for investors in the Russian Far East. Talking to RT on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, he praised the work of the Russian government, saying a lot has been put into the region’s development.

Boom: US nuclear arsenal upgrade to exceed $1trillion https://briefnews.eu/boom-us-nuclear-arsenal-upgrade-to-exceed-1trillion/ https://briefnews.eu/boom-us-nuclear-arsenal-upgrade-to-exceed-1trillion/#respond Thu, 02 Nov 2017 16:44:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/boom-us-nuclear-arsenal-upgrade-to-exceed-1trillion/

At a time when the US national debt stands at just over $ 20 trillion, American taxpayers find themselves stuck with a massive maintenance bill to keep the nation’s nuclear arsenal operational over the next three decades.

The modernization of US nuclear forces will carry a price tag estimated at $ 1.2 trillion from 2017 until 2046, according to the US Congress Budget Office (CBO) report.

That planned modernization would increase the total costs of maintaining the current number of nuclear weapons and delivery system by 50 percent over normal operating costs, according to the CBO.

The trillion-dollar question on everybody’s mind is: How exactly will the US government foot the bill for such a massive program?

“We never really knew where the money was coming from and now it is even less clear,” Jon Wolfsthal, former senior director for arms control and non-proliferation in the Obama administration, told the Guardian.

The CBO points out, however, that the modernization plan was attached to the Obama administration’s 2017 budget request, and may change in the context of Trump’s plans for US national security.

Presently, the Pentagon is placing the finishing touches on its so-called Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), which lays out ground rules for Washington’s procurement and use of nuclear weapons. The final version of the NPR is expected to be forwarded to Trump’s desk for approval around late December 2017 or early January 2018, according to reports.

The first draft of the NPR – which is rumored to open the door to underground nuclear tests, last carried out in 1992, as well as new guidelines for determining when it is permissible to resort to the use of nuclear weapons – was presented in September during a meeting between Trump and his top national-security advisers.

“You can … be assured that our administration is committed to strengthen and modernize America’s nuclear deterrent,” Mike Pence, the vice president, said in late October during a visit to Minot air force base in North Dakota, a main hub for Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles and B-52 bombers.

Pence continued with comments that carried faint shades of Orwellian doublespeak: “There’s no greater element of American strength, there’s no greater force for peace in the world than the United States nuclear arsenal.”

Nevertheless, there remains a possibility that Donald Trump, taking into account the US government’s massive debt load, coupled with his campaign pledge to rebuild the crumbling US infrastructure – part of his ‘Make America Great Again’ campaign – may “shift resources to address other defense priorities in the face of long-term budgetary pressures,” the CBO added.

America’s aging nuclear arsenal, much of which was built many decades ago, is reported to be nearing the end of its service life. Trump is therefore expected to accept – begrudgingly, of course – much of his predecessor’s whopping spending package. This is comprised of $ 772 billion for the operation, sustainment and modernization of strategic nuclear delivery systems ($ 313 billion of that amount to be used for ballistic missile submarines); $ 445 billion for research labs and production facilities that support nuclear weapons activities and the command, control, communications, and early-warning systems connected to nuclear forces; while the remaining $ 25 billion will be slated for shorter-range aircraft and the nuclear weapons they carry.

According to the Department of Defense, “virtually every element” of the forces it decides to retain will need to be completely modernized or refurbished.

Whether the bloated American budget can handle the sticker shock is another question.

Tesla misses Model 3 delivery goals but plans to exceed total vehicle numbers https://briefnews.eu/tesla-misses-model-3-delivery-goals-but-plans-to-exceed-total-vehicle-numbers/ https://briefnews.eu/tesla-misses-model-3-delivery-goals-but-plans-to-exceed-total-vehicle-numbers/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 04:29:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tesla-misses-model-3-delivery-goals-but-plans-to-exceed-total-vehicle-numbers/

On Monday afternoon Tesla sent out a press release detailing vehicle deliveries for the quarter, and the missive carried mixed news. The company only delivered 220 of its new, lower-priced Model 3 in the third quarter of 2017, a far cry from the 1,500 Model 3 deliveries the company projected for Q3 in August, according to the Wall Street Journal. Tesla, however, highlighted deliveries of its more time-tested models—in Q3, the company delivered 25,930 model S and X vehicles, which is a record for the electric vehicle startup.

Production ramp-up has always been a weak spot for the company, and, in 2015, the Model X exposed Tesla’s struggles with quality control most clearly. A slow ramp-up invited criticism from investors, and in response Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company was focusing on building the “machine that builds the machine,” that is, automating the production process to improve deliveries.

Although X deliveries have improved throughout 2017, the Model 3 was supposed to enjoy some of the fruits of that learning process. During a May financial call, Musk said he hoped for “5,000 vehicles per week at some point in 2017, and… 10,000 vehicles per week at some point in 2018.” Musk said that the company designed the 3 to be much less complicated than the X, with fewer features and less wiring to make the car not only cheaper but faster to produce.

The ambition of ‘Beyond Good and Evil 2’ might exceed the hype https://briefnews.eu/the-ambition-of-beyond-good-and-evil-2-might-exceed-the-hype/ https://briefnews.eu/the-ambition-of-beyond-good-and-evil-2-might-exceed-the-hype/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2017 05:19:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-ambition-of-beyond-good-and-evil-2-might-exceed-the-hype/

We’ve waited a long time for the sequel to Beyond Good and Evil. And you know what? They actually went and did it. Arguably the biggest surprise of E3 2017 was a minute-long trailer teasing a game that barely seems recognizable to the 2003 original. But even the anticipated return of the cult hit might not match the vision that director Michel Ancel and his team has for Beyond Good and Evil 2. Ancel himself explains the return of the quirky game — and we have a ton of concept artwork to keep the hype going. Ubisoft has (literally) big plans.

14 years is an eternity in gaming, and Beyond Good and Evil‘s sequel/prequel is a rare tale of development hell that managed to turn itself around. Ancel explained to Engadget that the gaming technology of the time, around 2006, simply wasn’t capable enough to replicate the team’s vision for the game series: a space opera that encompassed not only multiple cities but multiple planets and online play that could involve your friends.

But it’s 2017: No Man’s Sky, the GTA series and Mass Effect have shown what’s possible now. Scale is a word that came up several times during the presentation. The planet “System 3” is at the center of both the trailer and a brief in-game engine preview Ubisoft showed us. The BGE2 team has made a proprietary new in-game engine: it exists, it works, and we got to see multiple spaceships and Knox the monkey move around within it.

Ancel tapped away at a keyboard and zoomed out from the city to reveal even more cities across the world. He zoomed out further to show the dark side of the planet ravaged by asteroids, then even further to the planets and stars surrounding it. He then tinkered with it even further, adjusting the angles of light on key character Knox. He then took control of a spaceship and blasted away from a giant Ganesh statue at hyperspeed, touring System 3 and showcasing the speed at which the game scales. It’s not perfect, but it’s fast and smooth. No more “light-speed jump” loading screens? That’s the dream.

Ubisoft

Unlike No Man’s Sky, however, the team explained these worlds weren’t drawn at random through algorithms: designers crafted these worlds with logical rules in mind. So if you follow a river, it leads to a mountain or a lake. Even the story of a planet hinges on its nature: that aforementioned asteroid-ravaged “dark side” is a pretty inhospitable place, so only the poorest citizens (or slaves) attempt to claim space debris and other precious materials from it. The rich live in safety in Sector 3. The poor do not.

Let’s return to Knox the grapplehook-toting monkey that’s the unashamed (f-bomb dropping) star of the Beyond Good and Evil 2 trailer. He is not the main character though, nor is the unnamed hoverbike driver. You will choose the look, gender, even race, of the game’s protagonist. You can be human or you can be humanoid — that’s your choice. Ancel adds that the plan will be to even offer where your character starts the game, whether that’s a prison ship, a planet, or elsewhere. It will be your story to tell.

Ubisoft

The next step for the Beyond Good & Evil 2 team will be extensive playtesting: it’s already started the “Space Monkey Program” (inspired by humanity’s first non-human test pilots sent into space) to help debug and even inspire the direction of the game.

Talking to Ancel, and listening the team’s presentation of various facets of the game’s lore offered up so many more tantalizing details at this still-early stage: a single-player game where your friends can play online with you, the ability to share photos and parts of the game (complete with galactic geotags) with buddies or in-game characters. It all points to a game that’s just so much bigger, grander, than the original Beyond Good and Evil. It looks like the team finally gets to make the game they dreamed of making.
