For our purposes here, a mentor is someone who has wisdom. And what exactly is wisdom? It is the combination of knowledge and experience.A mentor is generally someone who has been in a field for a while and is successful in what they do. Mentoring itself is defined as a relationship between a more experienced person (the mentor) who supports and encourages others (the mentee) in their business or career path.((Business Mentors: What Is Mentoring)) Mentors generally act as a resource for the mentee without micro managing them.
Like many people, I have had the benefit of various mentors throughout the years and they have proved invaluable to my growth and success. In fact, my first forays into internet marketing were because I had watched a friend of mine become very successful working from home on his computer. When I approached him about helping me learn the business, he agreed, but only if we set certain ground rules. While this was a much more formal arraignment than I was expecting, looking back I can see the value of his approach. Here are the rules we agreed upon:
We were to meet every Wednesday for lunch, each meeting would last approximately one hour, and if one of us couldn’t make it we needed to give the other 24 hours notice. This made the mentoring relationship a priority.Just like anything else that was important to my businesses success, I had do commit to it and take it seriously. Now since that first mentoring relationship, I have had others with various people who lived far away from me, some even in other countries. In those cases we would meet by phone, direct message or video conference, but we always had a set time and a regular schedule.
He insisted that our mentoring relationship have a cutoff date of three months. He explained that while he was happy to help, he was not interested in becoming a crutch for me every time I had a problem. Besides, I wasn’t able to pay him and as he explained “I have a life outside of work”.As it turned out, we have kept in touch over the years and exchange thoughts and ideas regularly, in fact it’s not uncommon for him to come to me for advice now. But having this three month time limit was important for a couple of reasons.First, it made me focus my attention on him as an asset. Knowing that this reservoir of information was going to dry up one day made me value his time more.As time wore on, I found myself carrying a small notebook with me so that I could jot down questions and ideas for our next meeting. This is a habit I carry on to this day, although my phone has replaced the notebook. The other thing it did was give him an out. This wasn’t something that I realized until I started mentoring others. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur or business owner. Some people don’t take direction well or just aren’t organized enough to be their own boss. This can be very frustrating for the mentor, they put a significant amount of effort into the relationship and if they keep leading the horse to water without having them drink, being able to have a hard cutoff date makes mentoring these people bearable.
In our very first meeting, we set (and wrote down) goals for our relationship. I was quite frankly a little stymied when he ask me what my goals for our meeting were, but luckily for me he had done this before and was able to help out.We determined that the goals for this mentoring relationship would consist of the following:
Now that we had our goals in mind, we went through and broke each of them down into smaller steps that could be put on our three month timeline.
Great mentors are like the north star, not a GPS.Man I love my GPS ! I plug in an address and get turn by turn directions to my destination. I haven’t been lost, even in a completely unfamiliar city in years. The newer ones will even reroute you to avoid traffic delays, construction or accidents. But back in the early days of navigation, the north star was an important navigation guide.Using a fixed point in the sky, ship captains could navigate their way across vast oceans traveling from one continent to another. While today’s captains can go to and from very specific ports using a GPS that maps out an exact route. Using the north star for navigation was much less precise. You could get from one continent to another, but the seas, winds and storms would ensure that you never took the same route twice.A good mentor is like the north star, not a GPS. They will give you guidance, just not specific direction.
How can you you recognize a great mentor? Here’re some crucial signs:
The term “Experience is the best teacher” is true. A mentoring relationship is not supposed to save you from all your mistakes, while getting lost in a storm is scary, it may just throw you off course enough that you land in a better place.
While this is definitely related to the first point, they need to allow you to fail and make your own mistakes. It’s more than just that. Mentoring can feed into the mentor’s ego.Being seen as, and thinking of themselves as the one with all of the answers can make them subconsciously want to live up to that expectation. A good mentor will recognize this and only offer the advise that they are qualified to give.
There’s an old saying:
“The good Lord gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. You should listen twice as much as you talk.”
In that respect, the mentoring process is a lot like therapy. A good therapist is there to help you work through issues and problems on your own. They give you tools, advice and suggestions, but you’re the one who has to do the hard work, they won’t do it for you.A good mentor does the same thing.
We’ve talked a lot about mentoring, mentors, what they do, how they do it, and what makes a good one. But mentoring is a two way street. If you see the benefits of getting a mentor, it’s important to understand that as a mentee, you have obligations and responsibilities to the mentor as well. Always keep in mind that you are asking for someone to share their hard earned knowledge and experience with you, maybe for free and maybe (like I did) so that you can get into the same business as them and one day become a competitor. These are some serious things that you’ll want to consider before getting into a mentoring relationship:
This can really be an issue for entrepreneurs, a lot of times we will have our own ideas and ways of doing things.Perhaps we have been successful in other businesses before and we have a track record of success. Recognize that the things that gave us previous success may not translate into success this time around.Starting at zero again can be a bitter pill to swallow. You must be able to set aside what you think you know and learn new and different ways to achieve success.
No adult likes to be criticized or told what to do, but being a mature adult means that you can receive direction and criticism without taking it personally.Every high school football player realizes that the coach is yelling so that the team gets better, not because he doesn’t like you personally. Likewise, your mentor’s criticism is not directed at you, but rather to get you to your predetermined goals.
The length of the mentoring relationship can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few years. If you are not willing to commit the time and effort needed then please don’t even get started.By having someone to mentor you, they are committing their time and energy to helping you out. Nothing frustrates a good mentor more than someone who is disorganized, who misses appointments or who isn’t willing to put in the time and effort needed.Additionally, you need to have realistic expectations about the mentoring relationship. I have seen people approach potential mentors solely based on the mentor’s network or connections. The potential mentee sees the mentor as a conduit to get to the people who he thinks can really help his career. This is a big no no.First of all, it’s a dishonest way to start the mentoring relationship. Secondly, I have never seen it work, and it usually backfires.Mentors, like all of us, don’t like to be used for ulterior motives, and once your motives become clear it is not only the end of the mentoring relationship, but it usually puts the former mentee’s reputation in jeopardy. So if your mentor does introduce you to their network, always be respectful and check with your mentor before initiating contact with someone they’ve introduced you to.
A lot of people are more than happy to help out someone “new” in the business with advise or direction. But becoming a mentor is a much more involved process. Before asking someone to be a mentor, have something that you bring to the table. After all, a mentor is agreeing to take you under their wing so your attitude, reputation and success is a direct reflection on the mentor.
In a working environment, potential mentors are always watching and evaluating the new people. They notice the ones who come in everyday exactly at 9 am and leave exactly at 5 pm. And they also notice the ones who come in early, stay late and don’t complain about doing tasks that no one else wants to do.So by putting in a little extra effort, you will become a much more attractive candidate for a mentor.
A gatekeeper is a person who has access to an influential person. The obvious gatekeeper is the boss’s secretary or personal assistant. These are people you don’t want to piss off!The trickier part is you don’t know all of the relationships that gatekeeper has. So even though you may have a good relationship with the gatekeeper, you might have been rude or unprofessional to a co-worker who is friends with that boss’s assistant. You have just made your life harder than it needs to be.
Once you have shown yourself to be committed, hard-working and valuable to the organization, you’ll need to be direct and ask for the mentoring relationship.Don’t expect mentors to seek you out. You’ll need to be the one to initiate the relationship.
Having a good mentor can have untold benefits for your career or business life. By connecting with a mentor, you’ll get the value of their experience and knowledge. But more importantly, a mentoring relationship will give you accountability, milestones to reach, and an accurate assessment of your skills.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Taking a lead from the US, Mexico should allow states to begin legalizing marijuana while broader efforts are in limbo, a senior government official said, as the country seeks ways to tackle record gang violence.
Tourism Minister Enrique de la Madrid, confronting rising lawlessness in and around the resort cities of Cancun and Los Cabos, said it made no sense for Mexico to maintain prohibition given permissive US policies in states such as California.
“I think in Mexico we should move towards regulating it at state level,” he said in an interview late on Wednesday, calling it “illogical” to divert funds from fighting kidnapping, rape and murder to arrest people using marijuana.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

German World Cup winner Lukas Podolski, who moved to the Japan Professional Football League last year, says that his team Vissel Kobe has every chance of becoming the top football club in Asia.
The 32-year-old forward, who retired from international football last year, having amassed 130 appearances, the third-highest total in German history, announced his transfer to Japanese club Vissel Kobe in March last year – much to the surprise of football fans.
Speaking to RT’s Stan Collymore, Podolski says that he has settled in well in the Land of the Rising Sun.
“It’s all good for now. I am nearly eight or nine [months] here now. The life is good, for me and my family. Everything is good: the food, the safety. People are friendly,” he said.
The third-highest scorer for Die Mannschaft is also positive about Vissel Kobe’s future, and is aiming to help the team become the dominant force in Asian football in the coming seasons.
“I hope that we can bring this club to another level. But it takes time, it can’t be done in one year. In three or five years we can make this club the team in Asia. This is our target, that’s why I’m here. To help the club on the pitch and off the pitch.”
As for the Japanese national team’s hopes for the World Cup in Russia this summer and beyond, former Bayern Munich and Arsenal striker Podolski was cautiously optimistic, noting that the right steps must be taken to popularize football more in a country where baseball is seen as the top sport.
“It would be interesting to see. There’s a lot of potential in this country. Japan has to push football in the next years, closer to the level of baseball. Look at the US, they have NFL, baseball, basketball, but they still have football, and they have a good marketing for it. And I think this is the key point for the J1 League, to push [the level of popularity of football] in the next years.”
He added that bringing big football names to the country is important, but it should be done to share experience with local players, not only for the sake of attracting fans.
“It’s important [to bring the big names], but it’s not everything. You can look at China. A lot of players went there, but they have moved back already. So it’s not only about bringing the names, it’s about making the Japanese players better, to make the quality of the J1 League better, to bring more Japanese players to Europe, and develop football [in the country].”

The United States women’s hockey team are Olympic champions for the first time since 1998, and they did it by defeating their arch-rival, Canada, in a thrilling shootout for the gold medal.
It was a time to celebrate for the American women as they not only won gold, but they did it while avenging losses to Canada in the gold medal match at three of the past four Olympics. Meanwhile, for Canada, the silver medal was a painful consolation prize.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

If the Trump administration excels at anything, it’s in turning something that should be easily manageable — if not completely benign — into an unmitigated fiasco. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s performance at Davos serves as a perfect example.
“Obviously a weaker dollar is good for us as it relates to trade and opportunities,” Mnuchin said on Wednesday at a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
This was not the right answer. In the name of global economic stability (and attracting investment to the US) the answer to any question about the dollar should be automatic, a no-brainer for any US Treasury secretary: “The US supports a strong dollar.” That is what the guidebook says you should say. Very simple.
But apparently Mnuchin, an alumnus of Goldman Sachs, is not one for no-brainers.
On his words, the dollar — which had been falling for weeks — fell to a three-year low at one point on Wednesday, and markets roiled. Wall Street, up to that moment, hadn’t been concerned about the dollar slide. Last week, one top money manager told me the slide was due to “petrodollar rebalancing,” and shrugged it off as if it was the last thing the US government should, or could be worried about.
But after what Mnuchin said, billionaire investors started freaking out about it in online blog posts. Thanks to him, what should be an afterthought is now a matter of international scrutiny and dismay.
So Mnuchin tried to backtrack that statement. On Thursday he explained that he was not concerned about a weak dollar short-term, and that of course the Trump administration preferred a long dollar in the long term and so forth. Trump himself had to go out and make a statement in support of dollar strength.
That’s fine, but it’s all too late. Now investors will vacillate between wondering if the Trump administration has a weak-dollar policy (bad for anyone wanting to buy US assets which would then go down in price), to anyone who thinks they have no policy (bad for anyone wanting to sleep peacefully at night).
None of this had to happen, especially not at the hands of someone who supposedly spent years in banking. It’s just another example of this administration’s talent for turning something that should be simple into a complete and total pandemonium. That is truly what they excel at.

Is having a black child model a “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” hoodie racist, or are netizens reading too much into an innocent take on childhood? RT’s guests weigh in on H&M’s advertisement controversy in an on-air debate.
The online outrage caused by the Swedish retailer’s pick of a photo of a black child modelling a hoodie with the words ‘Coolest monkey in the jungle’ emblazoned on the front, has forced the company into an official apology while removing the image from its site.
Many users on Twitter went as far as calling for a boycott over H&M’s alleged racism. However, Luke Gittos, law editor of Spiked magazine, believes the controversy is overblown and reflects a kind of outrage mentality online.
“This is a very sad day. The word monkey’s been used because this boy is a child, and the word monkey is used to describe children of all races because they’re cheeky and mischievous,” he said. “The idea that this was somehow racially malevolent I think is utterly ludicrous, and really I think this is a symptom of what Twitter does to people; it encourages people to see the absolute worst in [other] people’s motivations.”
Not only that, but scandals like this may in fact deepen the racial divide, Gittos added. “Twitter makes racial solidarity impossible by encouraging everyone [to] believe the worst about everyone else.”
“I think it’s really sad when adult conceptions about racism and race get read into childhood interactions. I think that is potentially extremely corrosive. If this kind of thinking gets into our school environment, for example, what are we going to end up saying? That black children can’t get involved with games that might involve jungle animals?”
But Remy Fadare of Models of Diversity, herself a victim of childhood bullying and the racial slur ‘monkey’, said she was very disappointed in H&M as the implications of associating a black person with that word should have been obvious. “If you’re gonna specifically choose a campaign where a black child is chosen as the monkey and the white child is chosen as the jungle survivor, in a climate of racial tension, you know it’s going to have connotations,” she said.
“This is really ill-timed to say the least. This is really badly thought out by a board of white directors. Even if there’s that opinion that it’s just been badly thought-out and it’s the parents who are negatively thinking about this, you cannot deny the connotations that it holds. I was bullied, called a monkey by the whole class and it really had an effect, and if that had an effect on me, it’s going to have an effect on generations to come.”

Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals was absolutely destroyed in the market this week after reporting earnings on Tuesday.
The stock fell as much as 35% on the news that something was keeping prescriptions of the company’s blockbuster $ 36,000-a-dose drug, Acthar, from being filled. Third quarter Acthar sales fell and the company told investors to expect things to worsen.
Then, at a luncheon with investors in New York City on Thursday, the company admitted that at least one big payer has started putting severe formulary restrictions on the controversial drug. That’s according to a person in attendance.
Here’s what that person took away from the meeting:
The restrictions were applied suddenly to high volume Acthar users — users that started using the drug for pulmonary, rheumatological, neurological and nephrological illnesses after the drug was approved for those indications in 2015.
Unlike patients who use the drug for its main indication, infantile spasms, these users were getting 90-day prescriptions for the drug. Now they’re getting 30-day prescriptions and patient churn is increasing. This is occurring even among patients who use commercial insurers that have deals with Mallinckrodt.
Mallinckrodt declined to comment for this story.
So instead, I asked Express Scripts about it. Express Scripts is the country’s largest pharmacy benefits manager — which means it controls access to drugs for its insurer clients — and it also has a very close relationship with Mallinckrodt. It sells Acthar through its specialty pharmacy, Accredo Health, and runs a patient assistance program for Acthar through its charity, United Biosource.
We asked Express Scripts if the nature of its relationship with Mallinckrodt has changed.
“As a PBM, Express Scripts has always offered clients utilization management restrictions,” said spokesperson Jennifer Luddy. “Coverage is a client’s decision, but for Acthar Gel we recommend clients implement prior authorization criteria that only approves the drug for treating infantile spasms, or for patients who are unable to tolerate steroids for an acute MS exacerbation, for up to a 30-day supply.”
Of course, “There are clients who choose not to implement this rule,” she added. She could not tell if, all of the sudden, patients had decided to implement this recommended prior authorization.
Now, to be fair, Mallinckrodt execs on Tuesdays call told investors that payers are squeezing drugmakers all over the market. It seems like this is happening to them in a dramatic fashion.
Less than 1% of doctors in America prescribe Acthar. It’s usually used as a last resort treatment when it comes to anything having to do with adults — typically multiple-sclerosis. The drug is so rare that its existence (and eye-popping price) go fairly undiscussed.
However, the in 2015 alone the government spent over $ 500 million on Acthar, making it one of the top 20 most expensive drugs for the Medicare Part D prescription drug program.
Business Insider
Acthar’s history has been all about protection and expansion. Just before Mallinckrodt bought Acthar from its previous owner, Questcor in 2014, pharma bro Martin Shkreli complained to the feds — specifically the Federal Trade Commission — about Questcor’s aggressive moves to block a competitor.
Mallinckrodt had to pay a $ 100 million fine over this.
Since the acquisition, Mallinckrodt has poured tons of money into expanding Acthar’s indications — the diseases for which it’s used — to 19.
That indication expansion is part of what has brought the drug negative attention. Back in September, The Journal of American Medicine published a study that questioned why less than 1% doctors — especially in neurology and Rheumatology — were prescribing a drug that cost around $ 36,000 when a steroid 1/50th of the price would work just as well.
“I was shocked for my profession,” said Dr. Dennis Bourdette, one of the authors and a professor and chair of neurology at OHSU, told Business Insider following the publication of the findings in JAMA. There’s an accompanying — and scathing — editorial, written by Saate Shakil, a doctor at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine.
“It’s a mystery to me why someone would be prescribing the drug,” Bourdette said.
Medicare
Now, since Medicare is for the elderly, those patients are obviously not using Acthar for infantile spasms. More likely, they fall in the chronic user camp — the camp of patients impacted by these new formulary restrictions. So investors at this Thursday luncheon, which was sponsored by Raymond James, wanted to know if the company was tracking what’s going on with prescriptions in that segment.
Mallinckrodt CEO Mark Trudeau said that he didn’t know, the person in the room told me. He said the company doesn’t have “visibility” into that market because they put money in a charity that pays the co-pays for those patients, and that it doesn’t manage that money. He also said the company does not disclose how much money goes into that charity for Medicare/Medicaid co-pays.
A lack of disclosure when it comes to charitable donations and patient assistance programs has enraged Congress before. Last year, Valeant Pharmaceuticals was in the hot seat answering for fraud at the company. That’s when Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) asked then-CEO Mike Pearson about his patient assistance programs. He said he had no idea how much money the company was putting into them.
“Don’t tell me you’ve never done the analysis,” said Warren. “By doing this you … keep the patient on the more expensive drug and then you … recoup whatever from the insurance company. What I’m saying is that this must be profitable … for you … You’re making more money … You haven’t done that analysis?”
Pearson said that he had not.
Warren then asked why these programs can’t be used on government insurance and then answered her own question: It’s “because it’s illegal,” she said.
When asked about the charity Trudeau was referring to, Express Scripts’ Luddy offered this clarification.
“The Acthar Gel Patient Assistance Program administered by UBC is a free product program, not a copay assistance program. Insured patients who meet PAP eligibility criteria receive the product at no cost to the patient and the plan…Medicare/Medicaid beneficiaries can participate in manufacturers’ free drug programs. It is not run through the benefit, it’s free product.”
That aside, continued formulary restrictions could force Mallinckrodt to continue raising the price of Acthar, which would only make payers even angrier. Plus, the company has been telling investors that it’s not going to rely on price increases (despite increasing the price of the drug as recently as January.)
Mallinckrodt is damned if it raises the price of Acthar, and at this point, it’s damned even if it doesn’t.

But the packed houses last week at Sadler’s Wells showed that there is a huge fan base for The BalletBoyz celebrating their maleness through the deep satisfaction of moving to music.
Founders and former dancers Michael Nunn and William Trevitt, both Royal Ballet products, have successfully tapped a nationwide market and last week included London in their current UK tour.
Four out of five works had London premieres at the Wells last week starting with Javier De Frutos’s The Title Is In The Text, to music by Scott Walker.
A mammoth see-saw stood in the centre of an empty black stage; the men in greyish shirts and trousers, the lighting dim.
But boy, what talent those dancers have.
The usual question about British modern dance (what does it all mean?) arose but this piece was a pleasure to watch.
There was a great deal of running in circles in Ivan Perez’s Human Animal, although quite why was hard to fathom.
However the orchestra was on the stage giving a magnificence to the piece that perhaps was never intended.
There is a vaguely funereal feel but the dance drifts harmlessly by.
Craig Revel Horwood’s The Indicator Line was about discipline, I think; a fun piece about boys being boys, and featuring clog dancing (Revel-Horwood’s great-greatgrandfather was a champion of the art).
Russell Maliphant’s Fallen closed the evening.
This talented man fills the stage with movement that satisfies the viewer’s head and heart and though it rounded off the evening with the whole company giving their all, the evening’s triumph was a duet by Christopher Wheeldon.
In all my years both on and off the stage I have never seen a love duet between two men that was anything but toe-curling.
Wheeldon’s US, danced by Bradley Waller and Jordan Robson, avoided the usual trick of expecting at least one of the men to dance like a female in love; always a stomach-churning failure.
Wheeldon finds the emotion in Keaton Henson’s music and asks each dancer to express it through their maleness.
A remarkably honest and deeply moving example of dance that makes the whole evening worthwhile.
This show is worth a few pounds of anyone’s money.
Sadler’s Wells, London EC1 (Now touring nationwide until December 2, details balletboyz.com)
That is the view of former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright.
Kane, who captained the Three Lions in the game at Wembley, poked home a Kyle Walker cross in second-half stoppage time to win the game 1-0.
Victory means England have now qualified for next year’s World Cup in Russia.
Kane has now scored 14 goals in his last nine appearances for club and country.
Wright was full of praise for his movement for the winner after the match.
“He led by example,” he said on ITV.
“He hasn’t really done too much in the game.
“I think there is a bit of movement in this which is perfect for young strikers because of what happens with the defender.
“Kyle Walker does well, he whips in a great ball, they know each other.
“But the defender earlier in the move just turns away, we’ll see it in this angle.
“It just gives Harry Kane that impetus to make that run when he turns.
“There, that is it, that’s where he gets that half a yard and that is why he gets this goal.
“That’s where he gets that half a yard from.”

We reported back in May that the Justice Department had commenced a criminal investigation into Uber’s use of a software tool that helped drivers evade picking up local officials in places where the service had not been approved.
Portland, Oregon, was one of the cities we mentioned where Uber employed the so-called “Greyball” tool. The city has now released a scathing report detailing that Uber evaded picking up 16 local officials for a ride before April 2015, when the service finally won approval by Portland regulators.
The Greyball software employs a dozen data points on a new user in a given market, including whether a rider’s Uber app is opened repeatedly in or around municipal offices, which credit card is linked to the account, and any publicly available information about the new user on social media. If the data suggests the new user is a regulator in a market where Uber is not permitted, the company would present that user with false information about where Uber rides are. This includes showing ghost cars or no cars in the area.
