Sometimes even when you win, you lose. For Dianne Wiest, that might just be the case. The Academy Award-winning actor says that winning an Oscar wasn’t the career boon she thought it would be. Despite flashing impressive range in roles that netted three Best Supporting Actress nominations and two wins, Wiest says she’s been boxed in by playing the same character in nearly every movie she’s offered.

When you think about Wiest, you might think of Vi, the mother of the rebellious Ariel in “Footloose.” Or maybe you think of the struggling divorced mom Helen in “Parenthood.” Or perhaps Peg, the mother-like figure for Edward in “Edward Scissorhands.” Maybe Joan, the matriarch of the Short family in the CBS sitcom “Life in Pieces?” And of course, there’s Lucy, mother of the vampire-fighting Emerson brothers in “The Lost Boys.”

And that’s Wiest’s point. Despite her acting chops, authenticated by the two Oscars sitting on her shelf (or wherever Dianne Wiest chooses to show off her hardware), she’s been stuck playing the same role over and over.

She’s Typecast As A Nice Mom

When an actor is typecast, it means that Hollywood producers only see them as one specific character type. While that might mean a safety net for struggling actors, it’s potentially a death knell for actors with the talent and desire to play a wide range of roles. For example, there was a time when Tom Hanks was typecast as strictly a comedy actor before he broke free in the 1993 drama “Philadelphia.”

Unfortunately, Wiest never had her “Philadelphia” moment to escape the dreaded Hollywood typecasting. The big question is, why? Wiest won Oscars for Best Supporting Actress in two Woody Allen films, “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “Bullets Over Broadway.” Both roles were rather salacious and neither involved being a mom.

Despite this, Wiest claims that there’s typically one type of role she’s been offered in Hollywood since her Oscar wins. The actress told The New York Times she’s been typecast as “a nice mom and that’s it. That’s all that ever came [after the Oscars], except in theatre.” Wiest also sent the gossip columns into a tizzy with the quip, “I have to move out of my apartment soon.” She later clarified that her unpredictable acting career and (ironically) covering large tuition bills as a single mother made her New York rent too expensive.

Dianne Wiest: Hollywood’s Mom

You hate to see Wiest limited by Hollywood typecasting, but let’s face it, she does it so well. Since the early 1980s, Wiest has played mom to some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Michael J. Fox (“Bright Lights, Big City”), Corey Haim and Jason Patric (“The Lost Boys”), Winona Ryder and (sort of) Johnny Depp (“Edward Scissorhands”), Lori Singer (“Footloose”), and Joaquin Phoenix (“Parenthood”) are all part of her show biz brood.

And though we’re well beyond the 1980s when Wiest played some of her most iconic “mom” roles, Hollywood refuses to release its grip on her as a mother. She’s now playing parent to another generation of actors, including Steve Carell (“Dan in Real Life”), Amy Poehler and Tina Fey (“Sisters”), and Jeremy Renner (“Mayor of Kingstown”).

But it’s not all bad. Let’s face it, Wiest is a Hollywood treasure and serves as an inspiration for moms everywhere. Her performances have inspired mom blog posts like “How to Handle Motherhood Like Boss mom Dianne Wiest” and social media posts celebrating her as a mother.

Wiest says she turns to the theatre to feed her artistic needs that Hollywood’s mom roles can’t. In 2019 she finished a three-year run as Winnie in Samuel Beckett’s iconic play “Happy Days.” She told the L.A. Times, “I just want to do Beckett’s ‘Happy Days’ over and over again. I don’t want to do anything else, because nothing else comes near it.” Prior to that, she starred in the thought-provoking “Rasheeda Speaking” alongside Tonya Pinkins.

Meanwhile, we’ll continue to relish Wiest as Hollywood’s mom, even though it’s a moniker she’d like to permanently ground, or at least send to bed without dinner.

The Masked Singer is getting all dolled up for Season 5 — and here’s a sneak peek performance to prove it.
One of the competitors in the upcoming season of Fox’s bizarre singing competition is Russian Doll, whose costume only allows for the most minimal of movements — a marionette-style mouth with a lower jaw that opens and closes.

You can get a good look at the… innovative new Masked Singer entry via the full performance below, which Fox released Tuesday. In the clip, Russian Doll and a friend perform “Shallow,” the Grammy- and Oscar-winning Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper ballad. (You truly have not lived until you’ve seen that little mouth flap up and down to all the “la-la-laaaa”s.)

In addition to the previously announced addition of wildcard contestants in this season’s gameplay, Fox on Tuesday also introduced Cluedle-Doo (as seen below), a giant rooster who’ll mess with the judges and offer new clues about the players’ identities.

Stranger Things: The Duffer Brothers reveal they know ‘exactly’ how the show will end https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-the-duffer-brothers-reveal-they-know-exactly-how-the-show-will-end/ https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-the-duffer-brothers-reveal-they-know-exactly-how-the-show-will-end/#respond Tue, 23 Jun 2020 05:35:32 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-the-duffer-brothers-reveal-they-know-exactly-how-the-show-will-end/

Twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer have helmed the 80s nostalgia trip Stranger Things since the hugely popular series debuted on Netflix in 2016. The wait for the fourth exciting instalment still continues, and The Duffer Brothers have teased they already have an ending in mind.

Many subscribers were anticipating Stranger Things to continue indefinitely until the writers eventually ran out of steam, as is the case with many popular television shows.

Thankfully, the series’ co-creators have confirmed that won’t be the case, and explained they have a definitive ending in mind for the science fiction thriller.

Netflix’s most popular drama series features super powered teen Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends in Hawkins battling against supernatural threats.

Season one kicked off the story with a gripping mystery when young high schooler Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) was abducted by a sinister alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.

The latest outing ramped up the action as the series moved into the Cold War and the kids and grown-ups investigated a covert Soviet operation beneath the Starcourt Mall.

Season three concluded when Hawkins Sheriff Jim Hopper (David Harbour) was caught in a devastating explosion, though a recent teaser trailer confirmed he survived and is being held in a Russian prison.

With both Netflix and the Duffer Brothers keeping the show’s secrets close to the chest, the Stranger Things fandom has been going wild with speculation.

In an exclusive interview with Deadline, the show’s masterminds explained how much of the show’s future has already been mapped out.

It still remains unclear whether Netflix will finish the show with the fourth season, or if Stranger Things will continue with a fifth and sixth instalment.

However, the recent interview confirmed whatever the future of the series has in store it will eventually come to a satisfying close.

Even though many mysteries remained unsolved by the end of season one, the Duffer Brothers revealed they weren’t sure if Stranger Things would be renewed for another round.

Matt continued: “I mean, the honest truth is, we didn’t know if we would go beyond season one. So we liked the idea that season one could function as its own standalone limited series, but it had the potential to go beyond that.”

  • The interim appointment of a man unknown and unqualified, except for his open loyalty to the president, to one of the top law enforcement jobs in the federal government has happened before.
  • In May 1972, President Richard Nixon elevated Patrick Gray III to the directorship of the FBI a month before the Watergate burglars were apprehended in the DNC offices.
  • However, the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general is slightly different as Gray was not appointed in the midst of an investigation that threatened to reach inside the Oval Office.
  • The timing and possible duration of Whitaker’s appointment give the acting attorney general maximum opportunity to wreak havoc.

It has happened before: the interim appointment of a man unknown and unqualified, except for his open loyalty to the president, to one of the top law enforcement jobs in the federal government.

It was May 1972 when President Richard Nixon abruptly elevated Patrick Gray III, a Justice Department official as colorless as his name, to the directorship of the FBI following the sudden death of J. Edgar Hoover. The announcement came as a shock.

Eleven people were killed and six others were injured when a gunman armed with an AR-15 and handguns stormed the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

When police rushed the synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood, they were met with gunfire.

The suspect, Robert Bowers, was eventually taken into custody and reportedly told one police officer: “All these Jews need to die.”

The shooting is believed to be the deadliest attack on Jewish people in US history, according to a statement the Anti-Defamation League.

Here’s how the shooting unfolded:

Just before the attack on Saturday morning, a post was shared on social media connected to Robert Bowers.

Bowers, the suspected shooter, was reportedly a frequent poster on Gab, a relatively new social network that has attracted many far-right supporters.

“HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people,” Bowers wrote just before the shooting, according to an archive of his Gab posts. “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”

9:54 a.m.: Allegheny County Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call about an active shooter.

The call into the Allegheny County Emergency Operations Center came just five minutes after Bowers’ social media post on Gab.

  • President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a private meeting on Tuesday morning.
  • Experts are concerned Trump could have gone off-script and may provide an unreliable account of events.
  • With only the leaders and their interpreters present, there may never be a full transcript of the meeting, potentially denying US officials the ability to analyze Kim’s words to Trump.
  • The US interpreter will create an official record of the meeting but this may not be a full transcript.

President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held their first-ever meeting, and there may never be a full record of what was said.

After meeting shortly after 9 a.m. (local time) for a handshake and photo-op, the two leaders entered a library at Capella Hotel on Singapore’s Sentosa Island to begin a one-on-one bilateral meeting. The two men were each accompanied only by an interpreter, raising concerns among experts.

Facebook will soon reveal exactly which websites are tracking YOU https://briefnews.eu/facebook-will-soon-reveal-exactly-which-websites-are-tracking-you/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-will-soon-reveal-exactly-which-websites-are-tracking-you/#respond Tue, 01 May 2018 17:26:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-will-soon-reveal-exactly-which-websites-are-tracking-you/

has revealed it is building a new privacy control called “clear history” to allow users to delete browsing data.

The social network says it’s introducing this feature to allow everyone to have more information and control over the data Facebook receives from other websites and apps that use their services.

The new feature is a bit like deleting cookies from a web browser and will mean Facebook users can see exactly what data is being shared about them.

Explaining more about the update, Facebook’s VP and Chief Privacy Officer, Erin Egan, explained: “Today, we’re announcing plans to build Clear History.

“This feature will enable you to see the websites and apps that send us information when you use them, delete this information from your account, and turn off our ability to store it associated with your account going forward.

“Apps and websites that use features such as the Like button or Facebook Analytics send us information to make their content and ads better.”

Facebook says the update may take time to implement as it will be working with privacy advocates, academics, policymakers and regulators to get their input on the best approach.

Tech companies are under intense scrutiny about how they protect customer data after Facebook was embroiled in a huge scandal where millions of users’ data were improperly accessed by a political consultancy.

“One thing I learned from my experience testifying in Congress is that I didn’t have clear enough answers to some of the questions about data,” said Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

This latest news comes after the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal, which saw millions of users’ data shared without permission.

.

Around 87 million users may have had their information shared with Cambridge Analytica after they or their friends took part in a quiz called ‘This Is Your Digital Life’.

Alongside the tool Facebook explained: “Recently, we shared information about the potential misuse of your Facebook data by apps and websites.

“We also shared plans for how we’re taking action to prevent this from happening in the future.

“Check below to see if your information may have been shared with Cambridge Analytica by the app “This Is Your Digital Life.”
