An episode from the epic is spoken here by one of a small number of Manaschi, who dream, improvise and study their way to historical enlightenment.
***
In this occasional series, OZY takes to streets and neighborhoods across the globe to ask a simple question: “How was your day?”
Today is good, very good. It has been so hot recently, and now it is cooler. It is like an opportunity to breathe has appeared. I am from the south of Kyrgyzstan, where it doesn’t get as hot as this. I moved up to Bishkek when I was 18. That was in 1992.
I’ve never had to do any work that must be done by the hour. I live by no schedule or to-do list. My life is mainly free. Today I do this, and tomorrow that. When someone calls us and invites us to speak, there we go, and we tell them about Manas. I do not know when my next performance will be — where I am called, there I will be, telling.
I teach lessons in “Manas-ology” for schoolchildren — we introduce them to the plot of the epic and explain the meanings behind the different stories. I perform at events of all kinds, and I also participate in many TV programs and national celebrations.
You could say that I am famous, yes, thank God. Sometimes people greet me in the street to say hello. They thank me. There is a national pride behind Manas. Therefore, everyone is very welcoming to me. It makes me very happy.

***
Who was Manas? That is a very large, multifaceted question. I could easily talk for two or three days about it. Very briefly, Manas was a hero who fought for justice and honesty. He is the reason that the Kyrgyz people persevered as a nation. And, most important, he is a person who does not enter into the framework of human understanding — he was created by God in a different way, with different skills.
He was an extremely fair and kind person. He would forgive his enemies, not to mention everybody else. For example, while in battle, the enemy would tell him that they were tired and needed to rest. He agreed to this. That’s how kind he was. There have been a lot of trailblazing legends throughout history, and each marks a different epoch. But his story reaches to a period of history we do not even know about. The epic traces through very ancient times. If we study it carefully, it refers to events since the time of the dinosaurs.
I started performing the epic when I was about 11 or 12 years old. But it is difficult to know exactly how or when it started. I do not remember from whom I first heard about Manas — because my generation, and the previous generation, we were all raised on the legend on Manas.
I had some dreams about him, and I studied him. Before I began to tell the epic, I got very sick and I suffered greatly. Yes, I went through all the stages to become a Manaschi.
When performing, the events of dreams and reality get mixed, in a sort of trance state. One time, I was performing the epic, broadcasting live on TV, and I fell asleep mid-performance. I remember thinking: I have a responsibility; so many people are watching. What did I just say? — because in a dream you can say anything — Hey, you fool, you have disgraced yourself. Wake up! I tried to wake myself up, and all I felt was fear for what I said. As I woke up, my tongue was still speaking, but I couldn’t understand what I was saying, or what part of the story I was telling. By habit alone, I continued to speak. I could not think about what I was saying, when to stop or what would come next.
The broadcast lasted only an hour. I was probably in this state for about five or 10 minutes. Afterward, I watched the recording. I saw nothing — everything went well.

There is no schedule by which the dreams come to me. Only he knows when he comes and when he leaves! In a dream, you cannot see any person clearly, like you are seeing them in real life. So I’ve never precisely seen the image of Manas in front of me. But it is as if he is looking, from above, though he is not visible. You know that he is watching. It is difficult to describe. It is an interesting world; you will not understand. The dream world, it is closely related to your real life, but it’s some kind of exclusive world. The experience of performing the epic is often like that. It’s a very difficult phenomenon, which is impossible to explain.
I still learn from dreams regularly, but a dream never tells me specifically what happened. That would make it so much easier! If it were so, I could just ask the question of which century Manas lived in, and then I’d fall asleep and see the answer in a dream. It does not happen like that. A dream only provides the reason, the context. The rest is prospecting, studies, research. I read books, listen to other Manaschi and watch recordings of previous Manaschi. I weigh all of that information, let it go through my mind, and it all comes together to build up an understanding.
This is a big world, a whole universe. As we say, food from a large kettle will not fit in a small frying pan, so a person is given only that share of knowledge that is commensurate with his capacity. From the universe of Manas, any one Manaschi is given only the load that he can carry. It’s like how an electric current is distributed within a circuit to minimize resistance. If too much is given to any one element, it will explode. Knowledge is the same sort of power.

Let’s imagine a Mitsubishi enthusiast awakens after having slept a decade. At first he isn’t alarmed at all, since the Lancer he last saw before taking a long nap still looks the same. The Galant is long gone, but that doesn’t bother him much. The first shock he experiences is when he realizes the Eclipse name has been reserved for a 2018 crossover — so would it be best not to tell him the vaunted Evolution nameplate will be used in an electric SUV?
That’s the plan according to Mitsubishi, as the carmaker announced it will show its e-Evolution Concept at the 45thTokyo Motor Show next month. Mitsubishi speaks of a watershed moment taking place at the show, as it “will wave the flag under new circumstances to usher a new era of longterm growth and sustainable development, returning to where it belongs to better embrace the future.” In short, electric SUV:s.
According to Mitsubishi, the e-Evolution is a preview for a “low-slung aerodynamic SUV Coupe,” and it will be a high-performance, all-wheel-drive vehicle with electric power. Of course, the very name Evolution stands for continuously evolving vehicles, so a change of approach from turbocharging winged Lancers isn’t that ill-advised. The included photo was distributed under the file name “1st Teaser,” so perhaps we will see more photos as the showtime gets nearer.

Halo 6 wasn’t part of Microsoft’s big E3 show, which instead focused on the new Xbox One X.
The only mention made of the series was through information on Halo War 2 on the upgraded system, which apparently caught fans off guard.
It was expected that something new would at least be teased for the popular Combat Evolved franchise, leading to some disappointment among fanbase.
Microsoft have spoken more on the subject since, telling fans that the latest game in the series wasn’t ready for the LA expo.
They have also looked to reaffirm to fans that they shouldn’t worry about a Halo 6 title taking a backseat further down the line to other titles.
A message on the Halo Waypoint boards explains: “I’ve had my share of crazy huge shows (Halo 2 theater, Halo 3’s Chinese Theater reveal for example) and some smaller shows (the year ODST was cut from the keynote last minute comes to mind) but I’ve loved E3 each and every year.
“It’s usually a tremendous amount of work – both at the studio leading up to a big show and the grueling schedules of the week itself – but there’s no place I’d rather be!
“For me E3 has always been the ultimate celebration of my favorite hobby, industry, entertainment medium and a chance to reunite with friends and colleagues I’d not see otherwise.
“So this year’s E3 was still awesome and special to me, personally, even though the Halo community at large had a slightly different take.
“I get it though, really, we’re all passionate about Halo (right or I assume you wouldn’t be here reading this?) and we want to root for the franchise we love and have always associated with Xbox platforms and keynotes.
“Don’t worry, Halo will have its grand moments again for sure, but it’s actually kind of nice to have a breather and let the team stay heads down working on what’s next that’ll be ready when it’s ready.”
In other news, it was confirmed this week that a fan-made Halo game has been given the greenlight on PC.
Installation 01 is a fan-made Halo homage that’s being developed for Windows PC, MacOS and Linux.
According to the official description, Installation 01 aims to recreate the multiplayer experience from the classic Bungie games.
Better yet, Installation 01 will be completely free to play.
And while fan projects have often been shut down by big publishers, it looks like Installation 01 might actually get the go ahead.
The makers of Installation 01 have spoken to 343 Industries about the game, and appear to have the studio’s blessing.
The Installation 01 development team discussed the project in a new blog post, explaining that it wasn’t in immediate danger of being shut down.
“As of right now, we’re in the clear,” the post reads.
“According to 343 Industries, everything we have done to date has been fully within the bounds of those trusty Game Content Usage Rules.
“Installation 01, as a project, is not in immediate danger of legal repercussions if we carefully continue to do what we’ve been doing.”
The impressive project should keep fans busy until 343 Industries releases the next major Halo sequel.
The rumors were true: Pandora CEO Tim Westergren has announced that he’s stepping down from the company he co-founded 17 years ago. He’ll remain in the leadership position while the company searches for a replacement. President Mike Herring and marketing chief Nick Bartle are also leaving, the streaming music company says. While Pandora isn’t clear about why the executives are bowing out, it comes after efforts to “refocus and reinforce” the firm by selling its ticket business and taking a $ 480 million cash infusion from SiriusXM. In other words, it’s likely looking for fresh blood as it adapts to a changing digital music landscape.

With the help of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, researchers made a surprising discovery that goes against what we thought we knew about old galaxies and how they evolve. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is a disk-shaped spiral galaxy. Typical of this shape of galaxy, the Milky Way’s stars move around with predictable regularity and new stars are being formed throughout. From astronomers’ observations, older galaxies that have stopped producing stars take on an elliptical shape with star motions that are unpredictable, different from the Milky Way and other younger galaxies.
However, scientists recently got a look at the MACS2129-1 galaxy, a “dead” galaxy that stopped making stars billions of years ago. But instead of being the expected elliptical shape, it was a flat disk much like the Milky Way. It’s half the size of our galaxy, but three times as massive and spinning twice as fast.
Researchers were able to see this galaxy by combining the power of the Hubble telescope with gravitational lensing — a process by which the gravity of massive celestial objects like galaxies can magnify and stretch light from objects behind them, creating a lens. A galaxy cluster lying between us and MACS2129-1 served as the gravitational lens in this case, allowing scientists to look deep inside the dead galaxy.
Now researchers have to figure out how dead disk-shaped galaxies evolve into elliptical ones, and the answer could be mergers. The merging of multiple galaxies could shuffle the star motions and plump out the shape of the resulting galaxy.
Researchers hope to use NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope to find more examples of this type of dead galaxy.

Last week brought a brand new trailer for Cars 3, along with our reaction after seeing roughly half the movie. Easily the most impressive and promising element of the movie is the new character Cruz Ramirez voiced by comedian Cristela Alonzo, who gives the franchise a much needed bigger heart. But beyond that, Pixar Animation delivers some truly stunning animation in bringing the world of Cars to life for a third round.
Below, we have a batch of images that reveals how a single frame from Cars 3 goes from being a storyboard illustrated by filmmakers to a fully rendered final shot from the film. Every single frame of any Pixar movie is an incredible achievement that is the result of years of work. Check out the Cars 3 scene evolution images below!
This storyboard was created by story artists John Hoffman and Sean Hood as the earliest piece of developing an animated movie. In the case of Cars 3, there were 81,924 story panels like this that were created and delivered to the editorial department. The storyboards provide a rough sense of how the story will go, and how animation will bring it to life. But this isn’t necessarily a definitive representation of how the movie will look when animation is complete.
Based off the rough storyline created by storyboards, concept art is created by the production designer and art department. This is where the look and feel of the movie starts to take shape as color and details are added to the images proposed by the storyboard. Again, even at this point, because of how Pixar operates, just because we see images in concept art form doesn’t mean they will end up in the final cut of the movie. The above piece was created by John Lee.
The concept art then acts as a guide for the basic shapes and forms of a given scene to be pieced together in a computer in a process called modeling. After that, painting and programming is done by technical artists during the process known as shading. This is where textures, colors, patterns and other elements are added to give the scene complexity. During this phase of production, a virtual camera is also placed in the scene in order to properly stage the characters in a position that creates the visuals desired by the director.
After all the setpieces and characters are placed in layout, the animation department comes in to start animating the primary and secondary characters. This is where the characters actually start to show personality and the “acting” that the animation creates is put into place. In addition, in a sequence like this, there’s an entirely separate crowds department that adds hundreds of other characters into the background.
Finally, the lighting department is responsible for integrating characters, sets, effects and more to create the final rendered image. This phase includes placing virtual light sources into the scene that not only illuminate the characters the set but create the right focal point for the audience to pay attention to. They go for what is called directed realism, not photorealism, where the shot looks natural and real within the context of the story and the scene, but may not necessarily appear exactly as the scene might if it were a live-action sequence. The single frame above has over 2 million pixels in it.
***
Keep in mind that at any given point during this process, Pixar’s mentality of story being king might take over and a scene may have to be drastically reworked or scrapped entirely. That’s what makes animation one of the most unique and painstaking ways to tell a story, and it’s also why it takes so long for an animated movie of this quality to be completed.
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is
suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!
Cars 3 arrives in theaters on June 16 this summer.
