Five speech therapists in Hong Kong were found guilty of sedition on Wednesday for publishing three picture books depicting sheep defending their home from wolves.
The therapists may face up to two years in prison under a colonial-era British law against seditious offenses, which the city's authorities have recently revived to use in tandem with a sweeping new national security law.
Prosecutors said the evil wolves in the books were an allusion to the mainland Chinese authorities while the kind sheep represented Hong Kong residents, according to a judgment published by the courts.
The five defended themselves by saying the books are fables meant to teach universally-celebrated virtues and are open to interpretation, per the court judgment.

However, District Judge Wai Kin Kwok ruled that the books were seditious "not merely from the words, but from the words with the proscribed effects intended to result in the mind of children."
In one of the books, a "Wolf-Chairman" directed another wolf to masquerade as a sheep in an attempt to occupy the sheep village and eat those inside, Kwok wrote in a summary, per court records.
Kwok described the disguised wolf as an analogy for the Beijing-backed Chief Executive of Hong Kong, which he wrote would lead children to view the city's real-life leader with contempt.
Another book, titled "12 Warriors of Sheep Village," appears to reference the 12 Hong Kong protestors who were caught trying to flee to Taiwan by sea in 2020. The book tells the story of 12 sheep who fled their village in a boat but were later captured and brought to be imprisoned in a wolf-run fortress.
Kwok wrote that children who read the book would be "led to believe that the 12 fugitives are victims of oppression and unfair prosecution."
The third book involved a story that Kwok said would lead children to believe Beijing had allowed people coming from mainland China to "make their home dirty and spread the pandemic."
The five defendants — Lai Man-Ling, Melody Yeung, Sidney Ng, Samuel Chan, and Fong Tsz-Ho — have been detained since July last year and were denied bail. All five are below the age of 30 and are due to be sentenced on Saturday.

Human Rights Watch on Wednesday called for the sedition convictions to be reversed.
"Hong Kong people used to read about the absurd prosecution of people in mainland China for writing political allegories, but this is now happening in Hong Kong," said Maya Wang, a senior Chinese researcher for the non-profit group.
"Hong Kong authorities should reverse this dramatic decline in freedoms and quash the convictions of the five children's book authors," she added.
"Concerned governments should speak out against Hong Kong's abuse of the sedition law," Human Rights Watch wrote in a release, urging the governments of Australia, the European Union, and the UK to join the US in imposing sanctions on Hong Kong officials stamping out dissent.

After murdering the Ricks in his cabinet who opposed his election, Evil Morty hasn’t returned in a significant capacity since.
However, the eyepatch-wearing Morty did show up for a brief cameo in this year’s midseason opener, Never Ricking Morty.
Whilst trapped on the Story Train, Rick and Morty become entangled in a montage of sorts featuring some of their old foes, with Evil Morty leading an army of Rick soldiers and Mr Meseeks.
Despite poking fun at the series’ formula, the episode frustrated some fans with Evil Morty’s inclusion, only for the series’ antagonist to remain absent for the rest of the series.
]]>This ending of this week’s Evil made me scream.
Not because I’d just witnessed a horrifying rehash of the Rwandan genocide, or a ghastly murder, or the near-miraculous healing of Kristen and Andy’s youngest daughter — though all those events transpired, too. The moment that had me hollering in disbelief, in entertainment, in sheer They didn’t just actually do that, did they? came at the very end of the CBS drama’s hour, which showed nefarious forensic psychologist Leland Townsend meeting with his own therapist.
The scene began with Leland ranting about how Kristen made him feel “impotent” (though not sexually) and how she’d caused him to feel small and unimportant by digging into his past. “I should have ripped out her heart,” he whined, the camera hovering just above the therapist’s shoulder as the other man questioned why Leland hadn’t done exactly that.
“It’s not part of the plan. Or has that changed?” Leland replied sulkily. And that’s when the shot finally changed to show us that LELAND’S SHRINK WAS A DEMON. A full-on, goatlike, big-horned, shaggy-furred, cloven-foot, unmistakably Satanic fiend from Hell.
(He was taking notes on a legal pad. That seems like an important detail to include.)
“This show is from the creators of The Good Wife?!” you say? “From the creators of The Good Wife AND BrainDead,” I reply. You remember BrainDead, Robert and Michelle King’s one-season political drama in which alien bugs — like, actual insects — infiltrated the minds of several members of Congress? If that show was the Kings letting their freak flag fly, Evil is them waving it like Enjolras at the barricade.
The best part about all of this is that, for most of its inaugural season, the show has erred on the side of showing less in order to creep-out more. Just minutes before the demonic reveal, in another storyline, a woman David had been counseling about her evil urges paused to listen to a sound coming through a crack in her basement wall. Was it the barely-there whisper of the Antichrist, egging her on to commit vengeful murder? Or was it merely a draft blowing over a gap in the stones? Viewers never got an answer and were left to draw their own conclusions as the woman calmly shot a man through the head, killing him.
On a show like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Grimm or Charmed, the revelation of Leland’s infernal analyst would’ve been just a footnote in the episode, yet another CGI’d beastie in a long line of Monsters of the Week. But this is different. This is a very definite choice. And I am HERE FOR IT.
Because if Evil isn’t afraid to toss one of Satan’s actual minions into the mix every now and then, who knows how far the show will go? This week’s episode proves that Evil isn’t afraid to get super weird, and we’ve got the Jan. 27 season finale — and a whole ‘nother season beyond that! — to watch that willingness bear twisted, delicious fruit.
What did you think of Evil‘s final scene? Weigh in via the poll below, then hit the comments!

David’s hospital stay on Thursday’s Evil was a very scary endeavor… and we’re not talking about how much he’ll pay before he meets his deductible.
The priest-in-training regained consciousness after his stabbing to realize that he was at the mercy of a sadistic nurse with a diabolical penchant for murdering black men. And while he fought for his life (and tried to discern good-vs-evil shenanigans from the drug-induced visions that plagued him), we learned that the person behind the creepy virtual reality goggles avatar girl Rose390 was the same person who attacked David (as well as the subject of a former exorcism investigation), and that David and Ben previously worked with another psychologist named Judy James (played by Megan Ketch, Jane the Virgin).
TVLine chatted with Evil co-creators Robert and Michelle King about what’s ahead as the CBS drama’s season finale approaches, and why David — while holding himself to a, shall we say, higher authority — is allowed to be as flawed as the rest of us.
TVLINE | You’ve said that David’s guilt over sleeping with Renée — and knowing that other people now know about it — will be a through line in the second part of the season. Will the public nature of his weakness make him second-guess himself more?
ROBERT KING | Yes. Two things there. One of which is, that is true, and we want to find, always, the metaphor for the show. The show often finds that psychological conditions find a metaphoric reality, so the very fact that the guilt about Renée and sleeping with her is expressing itself in this person who comes and tries to kill him I think is all of a piece. And the second thing is, look, I’m someone who believes in confession, who believes that human beings can’t help but do bad things because they are you know, they are fallen. I saw some religious people kind of taking the show to task by showing that, “Oh, you’re the priest who sleeps with someone.” Well, first of all, he’s not a priest. And yes, he should not be sleeping with her, but he goes to confession. So many people kind of think TV only has to show pure people, or it’s problematic about religion, and I just think that’s missing the point.
MICHELLE KING | Right. The lay people in our shows are also not perfect, and we wanted to extend the same kind of treatment to the religious, to keep them real.
TVLINE | We’ve seen so many examples over the years of people who choose these lives and then have a very hard time maintaining the incredibly inhuman standard that is set before them, right?
ROBERT KING | I think so. Yeah. I mean, in many ways, we’ve talked a lot about him being imbedded with Marines and so on, and we were trying to make a connection: Diligence in religious matters is equivalent to those who do very tough things and require very tough things of themselves. Yes, people will fail.
TVLINE | Li Jun Li is back in this episode, when Grace warns David of danger. What can you tease about Grace’s involvement in the rest of the season? Will we see her again?
ROBERT KING | Well, first of all, part of this was a reaction to her performance. We just fell in love with her.
MICHELLE KING | Yeah.
ROBERT KING | There’s this odd sense of holiness about her that’s like Song of Bernadette. What we really liked about [Grace] is that she is a human being, but there was also something that was authoritative about her, whether you call it prophecy or her intuitiveness. So what we thought, if she’s still living on in David’s mind as this presence that’s is the closest he’s seen on Earth to God, I guess. She’s not a priest. She’s not a nun. She just probably just goes to church every Sunday. But what he sees in her is someone who God talks to, and I think that just means so much to him that he’s kind of kept her around, as, like furniture in his brain, you know? And the woman who acts the part is just so amazing.
TVLINE | I noticed that Kristen’s husband, Andy, isn’t in the episode. Is Kristen feeling like he’s on the periphery of her life? What’s her mindset as we move past toward the end of the season?
MICHELLE KING | No, I think she does not see him in the periphery. She has a very full life, a career that is exciting to her, and of course, the four kids. No. She considers her marriage important.
ROBERT KING | And we’ll see him come back in a big way in [Episode] 12. Part of it is that Patrick Brammall has his own show, No Activity. Obviously, we are constantly pulling him away from that to do our show, so part of it is living within what we can do with that.
MICHELLE KING | The realities of producing. [Laughs]

They’re not the stars of their shows, but they might as well be, because these supporting characters shine in every scene that they’re featured in.
As TVLine continues to look back on the past year, we’ve compiled a list of 25 characters who snagged the spotlight and grabbed our attention with their memorable performances. Our picks include many adorable and hilarious kiddos from mixed-ish, American Housewife, Modern Family and, of course, Evil (that gaggle of daughters!).
Several grownups from shows such as Succession, What We Do in the Shadows and The Other Two also stole the limelight this year, commanding the small screen with their comedic zingers or dramatic chops. Even the villains got in on the scene-stealing action: Batwoman foe Alice and Watchmen‘s Lady Trieu were so captivating that they almost made us want to root for the baddies.
We’re also heaping kudos on a Bachelor in Paradise contestant, a Politician scenery-chewer and a Prodigal Son sidekick. And of course, no collection of 2019 scene stealers would be complete without a certain wee standout from The Mandalorian.

Here at TVLine, we immediately jumped at the chance to screen the trailers — which are available here — and we’re ready to tell you exactly what we think about each of them.
Below, Michael Ausiello, Matt Mitovich, Kimberly Roots, Andy Swift, Dave Nemetz, Vlada Gelman, Ryan Schwartz and Rebecca Iannucci share their gut reactions to the new series based on the first footage released by the network. Then we ask you to watch the new spots and tell us whether you agree or disagree with our quick-take reviews.
Keep in mind: The trailers we’ve seen are just a first glimpse and often are not wholly indicative of the series as a whole. As such, don’t take the following analysis to mean the series below will necessarily be good or bad. Previews can be deceiving — and we’ve all been fooled before.
Keep scrolling to see how Team TVLine reacted to each preview…
ALL RISE (Mondays at 9/8c; watch trailer)
AUSIELLO | The Good Wife and The Good Fight have set a VERY high bar for CBS legal dramas. I have no further comment.
MITOVICH | This is what Simone Missick deserves.
SWIFT | Wait, is Shondaland making shows for CBS now?
NEMETZ | I forgot about this utterly average legal drama before the trailer even ended.
SCHWARTZ |This looks much quirkier than your average CBS procedural. That should work in its favor behind a pair of broad comedies.
IANNUCCI | I think I was supposed to be moved by this trailer — but I felt nothing. Also, not enough Wilson Bethel.
BOB HEARTS ABISHOLA (Mondays at 8:30/7:30c; watch trailer)
MITOVICH | I wanted to like this. But didn’t realize Bob would be so stalker-y.
ROOTS | Folake Olowofoyeku is the best part of this trailer. I look forward to her getting her own show which, unlike this, I’ll probably watch.
SWIFT | It’s a fun spin on the traditional romantic comedy, I guess, but does Molly know about this?
NEMETZ | Seems to confuse stalking with romance, which is… troubling. It’s gonna take a lot of work to convince me that Abishola hearts Bob back.
GELMAN | It didn’t make me laugh, but it also didn’t make me cringe.
IANNUCCI | If the penis jokes weren’t off-putting enough (and they were!), Bob’s relentless pursuit of Abishola is just creepy enough to make this a skip.
CAROL’S SECOND ACT (Thursdays at 9:30/8:30c; watch trailer)
MITOVICH | The Rookie meets Scrubs? That was a FUNNY trailer.
ROOTS | So this is literally The Rookie, M.D.? Pass.
SWIFT | I laughed at this trailer a lot more than I expected. I probably won’t watch week-to-week, so can someone let me know when Carol finally bones the guy from Baby Daddy?
NEMETZ |Kyle MacLachlan has gray hair now! (That’s about all I took away from this, aside from all the hokey old-lady jokes.)
GELMAN | So. Many. Old. Person. Jokes.
IANNUCCI |Did you guys know Carol is a little older than her fellow interns? The trailer didn’t quite make that clear.
EVIL (Thursdays at 10/9c; watch trailer)
AUSIELLO | Current frontrunner for my most anticipated new fall series.
MITOVICH | This got far and away the biggest reaction from the Carnegie Hall audience at the network’s Upfront. I’m curious to see how dark it gets/stays.
ROOTS | The X-Files plus The Exorcist, courtesy of the Kings? It’s like I nightmared it into being!
NEMETZ | Intriguingly creepy and complex. Doesn’t feel like a CBS show… in a good way!
GELMAN |Anyone else remember ABC’s short-lived Miracles? It got cancelled too soon so I’m glad Robert and Michelle King seem to have unintentionally rebooted it.
SCHWARTZ |Will be curious to see if the same audience that rejected the Kings’ Braindead will embrace this horror-tinged procedural. The trailer piqued my interest, and this is not the kind of show I typically watch.
IANNUCCI | The straight-up scary stuff came off a little hokey; the demon in the bedroom actually made me laugh, which is probably not a good sign. But it looks well-acted and suspenseful enough that I’ll give it time to work out the kinks.
THE UNICORN (Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c; watch trailer)
AUSIELLO | You had me at Walton Goggins and Michaela Watkins. You lost me at “Natalie.” You had me back at Walton Goggins and Michaela Watkins. (But, seriously, “Natalie” is gonna be a problem for me.)
MITOVICH | Wow, this looks strong. But what a weird pairing with Young Sheldon.
ROOTS | Solid cast, cute dog. But I cover This Is Us and A Million Little Things: I’ve got no tears left. As long as Unicorn stays light, I’m in.
NEMETZ | The cast is pretty great, but I wish it had more laughs and fewer touchy-feely moments.
GELMAN | Anybody else think it feels like an ABC show?
SCHWARTZ | This has been my favorite trailer out of Upfronts Week — by a mile. I’m most excited to see Michaela Watkins back on television after a fantastic run on the criminally underrated Casual.
IANNUCCI | Walton Goggins + Michaela Watkins + a nice mix of heart and humor = GIMME.
BROKE (watch trailer)
AUSIELLO | A cast this strong and a premise this amusing should’ve yielded a funnier trailer. Also: This was the only new show preview not shown at the upfront presentation, which is highly suspect.
ROOTS | Lemme get this straight: Single dads are highly coveted unicorns but single moms are messes who are just scraping by? Cool, cool.
NEMETZ | I love Jaime Camil with a fiery passion, and would love to watch him on a sitcom… just not this one.
GELMAN | It’s a lot broader comedically than I would like, but I will always root for Jaime Camil.
SCHWARTZ | I adore Jaime Camil, but it says a lot that he’s giving the least broad performance here.
IANNUCCI | Now, if this were a buddy comedy focused only on Javier and Luis? Then I’d be interested.
FBI: MOST WANTED (watch trailer)
SWIFT | OH MY GOD, WHY IS HIS LAST NAME LA CROIX?!
NEMETZ | If you watch FBI, you might like this! (I don’t, so I dunno.)
SCHWARTZ | I can’t wait to not watch this for the next 10-12 seasons.
TOMMY (watch trailer)
MITOVICH | Why do I have a feeling this chief of police will be atypically and unbelievably involved in working cases on the streets?
ROOTS | Love Edie Falco. Love a good Beauty and the Beast reference. But good lord, another cop show?
SWIFT | Edie Falco hasn’t disappointed us yet, so I have faith in this show (even if it’s not really my thing).
NEMETZ | I’ll give anything with Edie Falco a shot, but the rest of the show doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.
GELMAN | Not for me.
IANNUCCI | Not quite my thing, but CBS does this kind of drama so well. I suspect it will run 10 years.

MacGyver is going to meet his evil “twin.”
TVLine has learned that film vet Peter Weller is set to pop up on the CBS drama at season’s end, playing a familiarly clever villain named Mason.
Coming out of a recent bombing attempt as well as a previous storyline in which Mac & Co. got doxxed, “Ultimately, all roads are going to lead to Peter Weller being this Big Bad who — and I think it was [series lead] Lucas [Till] who came up with this — is basically a ‘bad MacGyver,’” showrunner Peter M. Lenkov tells TVLine. “He’s someone who has the same head as MacGyver, the same skills, but he uses it for nefarious purposes.”
Weller’s Mason will surface in the Season 3 finale, airing Friday, May 10, and “hopefully, if we come back next season, we’ll continue that arc,” Lenkov says.
Weller is no stranger to Lenkov’s CBS reboot trilogy. In addition to playing the titular Hookman in a Season 3 episode of Five-0, he has directed a dozen episodes of Five-0, a couple of MacGyvers and one Magnum P.I. His most recent on-camera TV credits include Amazon’s Forever, Longmire and The Last Ship.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile will land in UK cinemas next month, coming hot on the tail of The Ted Bundy Tapes series on Netflix. The plot of the new film starring Zac Efron reads: “Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins) refused for years to acknowledge that her boyfriend was a serial killer. Her partner, Ted Bundy (Zac Efron), became famous in the 1980s for committing several heinous crimes against women, despite her disbelief, who watched passively as the murders were unleashed from a very unique perspective.”
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile has a respectable 64 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
The critics’ consensus reads: “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile often transcends its narrative limitations through sheer force of Zac Efron’s compulsively watchable performance.”
Despite the middling score, many critics praised Efron’s performance.
Brian Tallerico for RogerEbert.com:
It’s particularly disappointing that Extremely Wicked doesn’t work considering that Zac Efron is giving it his all here.
THE BEACH BUM REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT THE COMEDY?
Sam Adams for Slate:
Narratives help us sift the meaningful harbingers from the detritus of life. Extremely Wicked discards them entirely.
Kate Erbland for indieWire:
More sad than salacious, it’s the rare film about a criminal that offers human details without humanizing a man who so many agree was a monster.
Johnny Oleksinski for the New York Post:
Berlinger’s aim, it seems, is to cast doubt on whether or not Bundy actually murdered anybody until the very end of the movie to maintain suspense. Good luck, Joe!
A.A. Dowd for the AV Club:
Extremely Wicked can’t seem to commit to its ostensibly limited POV.
AT ETERNITY’S GATE REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT VAN GOGH MOVIE?
Emily Yoshida for New York Magazine/Vulture:
If the narrative film only exists to give us the unsettling sliminess of Efron as Bundy, it won’t be a total waste. But it’s not much of a movie, either.
Owen Gleiberman for Variety:
How is Zac Efron as Bundy? I think he’s startlingly good: controlled, magnetic, audacious, committed, and eerily right.
Carlos Aguilar for TheWrap:
Less a play-by-play perusal of the killer’s methods and perversions, and more an examination of our biases and unending fascination for those among us that find twisted fulfilment in brutality.
Kristy Strouse for Film Inquiry:
Personally, the courtroom element incurs a stuffy countenance, but watching Efron infer Bundy’s unyielding charisma improves the setting.
UNICORN STORE ON NETFLIX REVIEWS: WHAT DO CRITICS SAY ABOUT BRIE LARSON DIRECTORIAL DEBUT
Rafael Motamayor for IGN Movies:
Despite Zac Efron’s performance, the film’s humorous take on a serial killer as a rock star doesn’t really work.
Todd McCarthy for the Hollywood Reporter:
Berlinger attacks the story in a rough-and-ready style only somewhat more refined than what he employs in documentaries, and the approach feels entirely appropriate.
Benjamin Lee for the Guardian:
In fact, the most shocking thing about the film is Efron’s remarkably accomplished, fiercely committed performance.
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile is out in UK cinemas and on Sky on May 3, 2019.
