Another week has passed in Big Brother‘s latest All-Stars season, and things are starting to feel very Groundhog Day in that house.

Just as “I Got You Babe” would inevitably blare from Bill Murray’s alarm clock at 6 am, the Committee alliance predictably stayed in power for another week, all but ensuring the exit of another underdog. And despite Head of Household Memphis’ initial plan to backdoor David — for… reasons? That Memphis seemed to think made sense? — it was Kevin and Da’Vonne who went up on the block, then remained there after Tyler chose not to use the Power of Veto.

But which houseguest went to join Ian at the jury house? And which Big Brother veteran returned to introduce a new twist? Read on for the highlights of Thursday’s episode:

THE STRATEGY | Following the veto ceremony, Da’Vonne tells Dani and Kevin that she has no interest in campaigning for votes, particularly the votes of Tyler, Cody and Enzo. But her resignation is less because she assumes she’ll get evicted, and more because this All-Stars season has prompted her to stay silent in situations where she would normally speak up — and she’s tired of concealing her real personality for a shot at the prize money.

“I literally hide my voice,” Da’Vonne says through tears in the Diary Room. “The very thing that I’ve encouraged people to do — I come in here and do the opposite. And I feel so bad about it. I’m just tired.” (And even though Dani wants Da’Vonne to stay over Kevin, she seems to understand the Committee won’t go for that plan.)

Elsewhere in the episode’s pre-taped segments: Kevin tries to convince Da’Vonne that Nicole was the flipped vote to evict Ian (but Da’Vonne remains skeptical… and Nicole lies to her face about it once again); Memphis and Enzo concoct a long-term scheme to create two separate Final Three alliances — one with Cody, one with Christmas — both of which are called The Wise Guys; and after realizing that Dani wants Da’Vonne to survive eviction, Christmas enlists David as an ally by offering him safety and confirming that Nicole was last week’s flipped vote.

THE EVICTION | Before the votes are cast, Da’Vonne delivers a speech that can only be described as iconic, reminding her fellow players of her intention to become Big Brother‘s first-ever Black winner. But because this season is the worst, Da’Vonne’s fellow houseguests all listen to her speech with looks of admiration on their faces… before evicting her by a vote of 5-2.

Interestingly, both Nicole and Dani break away from the Committee on this vote and decide to keep Da’Vonne, though it seems like they planned that well before Da’Vonne delivered her persuasive parting words. Then, in Da’Vonne’s post-game interview with Julie Chen Moonves, she finally learns that Nicole indeed voted to evict Ian instead of Tyler last week. From a game standpoint, she says she’s not bothered by the betrayal — but she is frustrated on a personal level, since Nicole knew that Da’Vonne didn’t want to accuse a fellow Black contestant of being a liar on national television, if David was indeed telling the truth.

THE TWIST | As for that long-teased return of a Big Brother legend? It’s Will Kirby, winner of Season 2 and possibly the best to ever play the game. (If only he were moving into the actual house, and not the neighbors’ pad, to show these contestants how it’s done.)

Will informs the houseguests that the upcoming Head of Household and Power of Veto competitions will tempt them to choose between playing for power and playing for prizes. But that’s not the biggest piece of news delivered before the hour’s up: Though the houseguests don’t know it yet, next Thursday’s episode will be a two-hour triple eviction. (!!!) For now, though, we’ll have to wait until Sunday to meet the new Head of Household, which could very well be Memphis if Dani uses her Replay power on him. Dani, I beg of you: Don’t!

Your turn! How do you feel about Da’Vonne’s eviction? And who do you want to win the Head of Household competition? Hit the comments with your thoughts!

Spanish students evicted from dorm to make room for ‘Aquarius’ migrants https://briefnews.eu/spanish-students-evicted-from-dorm-to-make-room-for-aquarius-migrants/ https://briefnews.eu/spanish-students-evicted-from-dorm-to-make-room-for-aquarius-migrants/#respond Wed, 20 Jun 2018 00:33:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/spanish-students-evicted-from-dorm-to-make-room-for-aquarius-migrants/ A grand gesture by Madrid to accept migrants rejected by Italy and Malta has backfired on some Spanish students, who were told to leave their dormitories in 24 hours to make room for the new arrivals.

Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s newly appointed prime minister, agreed to take in passengers of the rescue ship Aquarius, who are mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, after Italy’s anti-immigration government and Malta blocked the ship from docking. But the arrival of the ship brought chaos into the lives of Spanish students in the city of Alicante, who were told to leave their dormitory to make room for the refugees.

The La Florida dormitory was chosen by the regional government of Valencia to host around a hundred unaccompanied children from the Aquarius. The children, aged between 12 and 17, were brought to the city by buses after the ship and two Italian vessels, which helped transport the refugees, arrived in Spain on Sunday.

The students, who reportedly pay as much as 750 euros per month for the accommodations, were told to vacate the rooms within 24 hours. The authorities explained that the eviction was necessary due to an emergency situation caused by the arrival of the migrants, reported the news portal Intereconomia. The mother of one of the students told the network that her son was told that all students had to leave La Florida because the migrant children were likely to have “many diseases” and posed a health risk.

The sudden development was reportedly not welcomed by many of those affected.

“We’re not against helping those in need, but it isn’t fair for my son to be removed from his residence and left on the street in the middle of his studies,” the woman said, adding that her son needed to complete his course in German in order to qualify for a new job in that country.

The regional government told RT it will ensure that all displaced students are provided new accommodations and that the province would cover their expenses.

The Aquarius came into the media spotlight earlier this month when it rescued almost 630 people trying to reach Europe from Libya in makeshift boats. Italy denied the vessel from docking at any of its ports, as the country’s new anti-establishment coalition government took a stance against accepting more migrants. The Italian Navy provided two ships to redistribute the refugees for safer travel. Italy also urged Malta to accept the migrants, but the island state also refused.

Sanchez, who became the prime minister of Spain in early June, said that it was “our duty to help avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and offer a safe port to these people” and invited the ships in. Some 2,300 people, including volunteers, translators, police officers and health officials were responding to the arrival, but apparently the operation was not as smooth as the Spanish government would hope it would be.

‘Disgraceful’ fans evicted over abuse https://briefnews.eu/disgraceful-fans-evicted-over-abuse/ https://briefnews.eu/disgraceful-fans-evicted-over-abuse/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 16:52:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disgraceful-fans-evicted-over-abuse/ SOUTH Africa had complete control of the third Test on day two, before an Australian revival helped keep them in the contest.

Australia ended the day’s play on 9/245 and trail by only 66 runs.

Starting the day with only two-wickets in hand, Dean Elgar and Kagiso Rabada stood firm and punished a lacklustre bowling attack.

Nathan Lyon was thrown the ball and left Steve Smith wondering why he didn’t bring him on sooner as he knocked over the two remaining wickets with only five deliveries.

The Aussies then got stuck in with the bat but it all went pear-shaped as the South African quicks lured the batsman into loose shot after loose shot.

Cameron Bancroft was able to make a significant impact with the bat as the underfire opener showed serious poise before falling on 77 runs.

It was then Nathan Lyon who played the role of saviour for the Aussies as he set a new career high by piling on 47 runs from 38 deliveries.

Kagiso Rabada, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander toyed with the Australian batting attack as they had the ball moving all over the pitch.

Here are the main talking points from the second day’s play in Cape Town.

WARNER INVOLVED IN SPAT WITH FAN

David Warner hasn’t been able to escape the controversial spotlight since this series has started and he was in the thick of it again on day two.

After being dismissed by Kagiso Rabada, Warner began the long walk off of the ground and as he approached the gate to start heading up the stairs, he was met by an unruly fan.

Clapping as Warner drew closer, the fan clearly had some choice words to say to the Australian opener which didn’t sit kindly with him.

Turning back to face the fan, Warner exchanged a few words before security stepped in and poorly attempted to stem the flow of chatter.

As Warner made his way up the race, the fan kept up alongside him and the men continued chatting all the way up the stairs.

Australian security officer Frank Dimasi then stepped out of the dressing room and jumped the fence before having a conversation with the fan.

The fan was later evicted, along with several others, from the Newlands stadium after the altercation. He is believed to be a member of the Western Province Cricket Club and could yet face further punishment from the group founded in 1864.

Controversy has followed Warner during his time in South Africa, most notably when he clashed with Quinton de Kock after the wicketkeeper hurled “vile and disgusting” remarks in his direction about his wife Candice.

A tantalising series has often played second fiddle to the constant string of controversies and the latest involving Warner threatened to steal more shine.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann labelled the abuse directed towards his players as “disgraceful” and stated Cricket Australia had lodged a complaint to Cricket South Africa.

ELGAR & SMITH ENTER RECORD BOOKS

South African opening batsman Dean Elgar equalled a world record when he carried his bat through a completed innings for the third time as his team were bowled out for 311 on the second day of the third Test against Australia on Friday.

Elgar finished unbeaten on 141 — only Desmond Haynes of the West Indies had previously batted unbeaten through a Test innings on three occasions.

Elgar and Kagiso Rabada frustrated the Australians for 50 minutes as they took South Africa’s overnight total from 266 for eight. They shared a partnership of 50 before off-spinner Nathan Lyon had Rabada caught by Smith at slip off his first ball of he day.

Morne Morkel hit a four before falling in identical fashion four balls later. Elgar batted for 434 minutes, faced 284 balls and hit 20 fours and a six.

After starting his Test career with a pair of ducks in 2012, against Australia, Elgar has grown into one of South Africa’s batting stalwarts.

Australian captain Steve Smith also equalled a world record when he caught South Africa’s last two batsmen for a total of five catches in the innings, the joint most by a fielder.

Although ten other fielders shared the record, Smith was only the second Australian to achieve the feat after Vic Richardson in 1935/36.

HEAT BUILDING ON KHAWAJA

Usman Khawaja has been under immense pressure during the current series and after another dismal showing with the bat, he’ll be praying to retain his place in the side.

He strolled out to the crease after Warner had lost his battle against Kagiso Rabada and with the Australians needing a steading partnership.

For reasons unknown, Khawaja didn’t seem interested in sticking around at the crease and he played a bizarre shot off the bowling of Morne Morkel.

Khawaja hooked a mid-length delivery around the corner and into the waiting hands of Rabada to end his innings after contributing only five runs.

So far during the series Khawaja has scored a total of 104 runs from five innings. That total includes his 75 during the second innings of the Test in Durban.

Which means from his other four times at the crease, he has compiled only 29 runs. For player coming in at first drop, the recent displays simply haven’t been good enough.

Khawaja will need a big score during the second innings of this Test or he may face the axe from the selectors.

Celebrity Big Brother 2018: Andrew Brady evicted after THAT expletive-ridden rant https://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-2018-andrew-brady-evicted-after-that-expletive-ridden-rant/ https://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-2018-andrew-brady-evicted-after-that-expletive-ridden-rant/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2018 22:22:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-2018-andrew-brady-evicted-after-that-expletive-ridden-rant/

Viewers were stunned when the former Apprentice star branded the 70-year-old an “old c**t” after she claimed his mother and grandmother would disapprove of his antics in the house.

Tonight, fans of the Channel 5 series saw the 26-year-old tell the former MP that he “forgave” her and hoped that they could put their differences aside.

But it seems it wasn’t enough to save him, as Andrew swiftly became the sixth star to leave the house.

Chatting in his exit interview, he told Emma Willis it was “epic” to be part of such a series.

He continued: “Three weeks out of four is a good experience. It has been a good few weeks but those weeks feel like months.”

When asked if he was surprised this week would be a triple-eviction, Andrew confessed he had heard Emma during a live show.

“You heard us?” Emma exclaimed as Andrew nodded.

Andrew also addressed his confrontation with Ann, saying her comments affected him.

He explained: “She knew what she was saying,” before admitted he wished he had risen above it.

Speaking about the incident, Andrew’s mum said she could “see how it happened” but did not condone the use of the C-word.

Johnny Mitchell quickly followed Andrew out of the house as he became the seventh star to leave the reality series.

Speaking to Emma following his departure, he said: “I feel like I kept it together for most of the time. For the first [eviction] I was very optimistic but I didn’t expect to win it.

“I’m so happy with three weeks. I think it was more about my perception and when I saw people kept me in I was pleased.”

He went on to add that he thinks his fellow housemates are “clutching at straws” to find reasons to nominate each other.

Commenting on game-playing antics in the house, he explained: “I don’t know anyone in there personally. I learnt from the other show [Love Island] that some people aren’t the same on the outside.”

Johnny noted that he didn’t believe that anyone left in the Borehamwood Bungalow was playing a game and hoped to see Ann be crowned this year’s winner.

Who will be the final star booted out tonight?

All Rachel asked for was parmesan, but it seemed that Shane and his helper, Wayne Sleep, didn’t get the message.

She told Emma: “They literally got 17 packets of mild cheddar.”

The presenter laughed: “A fridge isn’t complete without parmesan cheese.”

Rachel continued: “You could not imagine the things…

“I had to bite my lips when the boys did the shopping task.”

Meanwhile, viewers praised Rachel for her time in the house on Twitter.

One wrote: “Rachel came across really well and whilst I think her time was tonight… she was a great housemate!”

Another added: “Proper guttered about Rachel being evicted. I thought she was a good character.”

A third complimented: “You went too soon Rachel. Really enjoyed you as a housemate on a fantastic series of #cbb. I felt your pain over the Parmesan!”

What’s more Rachel dropped a shock bombshell about fellow housemate Andrew Brady, which left Emma completely speechless.

She confessed that The Apprentice star has his genitalia pierced – however, the cameras didn’t show the conversation she found that out.

Celebrity Big Brother airs nightly on Channel 5 at 9pm.

‘Out with occupiers!’: Spanish police evicted from hotels in Catalonia (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/out-with-occupiers-spanish-police-evicted-from-hotels-in-catalonia-video/ https://briefnews.eu/out-with-occupiers-spanish-police-evicted-from-hotels-in-catalonia-video/#respond Wed, 04 Oct 2017 01:31:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/out-with-occupiers-spanish-police-evicted-from-hotels-in-catalonia-video/

Hotels around Catalonia evicted up to 500 Spanish police officers from their premises on late Monday, amid a local outcry and mass protests surrounding their buildings.

The demonstrators surrounded hotels in the towns of Calella, Pinedea and Figueres, shouting, “Out with the occupying forces!” and singing Catalan songs.

Videos have also emerged of the National Police crowding the lobby of the Pineda del Mar hotel and singing Spanish national songs, waving flags and calling for action to be taken against the protesters.

Amid the protests, hotel managers in Pineda and the other towns started evicting their uniformed guests on Monday to avoid escalating the situation with the protesters. The management may have also allegedly been influenced by threats made toward property and staff, according to reports in Spanish media.

The Civil Guard’s union, the AUGC, confirmed that over 250 of its officers were expelled from one hotel near Barcelona alone, while local newspapers reported a total of 500 officers altogether from both the Civil Guard and the National Police have been forced to find new accommodation.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said she had a letter signed by a hotel manager accusing the Pineda council of threatening to close the hotels, which she denounced as “mafia behavior,” but the council and hotel later issued a joint statement denying any undue pressure.

On Tuesday, Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said that neither the National Police nor Civil Guard would abandon their hotels under threats. But all the main unions of the National Police – SUP, CEP, UFP, SPP and ASP – have called on the government to do more to ensure the safety of police officers deployed to Catalonia, warning that if nothing is done they will demand resignations from Zoido and other government ministers.

“After a long day of work, the Guardia Civil had to endure shouting, insults and some bottles were thrown,” the AUGC said in a statement.

Tens of thousands of extra officers from the National Police and Civil Guard deployed to Catalonia amid tension over the independence referendum held on Sunday, after Madrid accused local police of not doing enough to stop the ballot. Millions of Catalans turned up to vote in the plebiscite, which was deemed illegal by the Spanish government and violence broke out, with local authorities reporting that nearly 900 people had been wounded by riot police wielding batons and rubber bullets in an attempt to break up the voters. Protests are ongoing in Catalonia and Barcelona, and no official date has yet been announced for the withdrawal of the extra forces.

He was up against Trisha Paytas, Sarah Harding and Chad Johnson after getting nominated earlier this week.

Speaking to host Emma Willis in his exit interview, the 34-year-old joked: “I’m milking it for all its worth. Who gets these chances?”

He went on to talk about being on the show, saying: “These moments come few and far between. I thought soak it in and enjoy the experience.”

Explaining why he thought he had been evicted, the former star of The Apprentice said: “I thought the vote bank was hard to shift. I was against the hunk of the house and the demographic of the show is mainly women.

“Then you’ve got the budding romance with Chad and Sarah.”

Karthik said that there was a “one per cent chance” of staying in.

“It wasn’t much of a surprise. I was surprised last week. It would be interesting to see the voting figures,” he admitted.

Emma, 41, then showed him who had nominated him this week which included Chad, Amelia Lily and Brandi Glanville, among others.

He reflected about the people who nominated him, saying he was “a little surprised” and “especially with Jordan and Chad as well”.

The reality star confessed that he changed his tack after initially coming across rather brash, confessing: “You have to be a people pleaser sometimes.

“I just decided I’m going to give love. If other people are playing games, let them do it.”

Big Brother Season Premiere Recap: Which Vet Returned? Who Got Evicted? https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-season-premiere-recap-which-vet-returned-who-got-evicted/ https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-season-premiere-recap-which-vet-returned-who-got-evicted/#respond Thu, 29 Jun 2017 06:19:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/big-brother-season-premiere-recap-which-vet-returned-who-got-evicted/

According to the calendar, summer technically began on June 21 — but for Big Brother fans, the season hasn’t officially started until Julie Chen utters a well-timed, “But first…”

Fortunately, CBS offered a return to normalcy on Wednesday night with the Season 19 premiere of its reality staple, cheekily dubbed “The Summer of Temptation.” Over the course of their 90-day stint, this year’s 16 houseguests will be offered tempting perks that, if taken, will introduce consequences into the house.

As every BB premiere does, Wednesday’s episode followed a typical trajectory: Alliances were formed too quickly (though I do kind of love the quirky quartet of Alex, Megan, Ramses and Jillian); the word “showmance” was dropped early and often; and, of course, jaws hit the floor when Julie introduced the season’s forthcoming twists.

Speaking of which, let’s recap all of the twist-induced drama from Night One:

* After first learning about the Summer of Temptation theme, the houseguests head outside, where they are presented with the chance to win $ 25,000. The perk? If one of them goes for the money, his or her identity will remain anonymous. The pitfall? Should the cash be taken, the houseguest who wins it will unleash the season’s first big twist into the game and won’t be eligible to become Head of Household for Week One.

Thanks to his fast fingers, Kevin — the three-piece-suit-loving stay-at-home dad — snags the money, but, upon winning it, maintains a poker face that Lady Gaga herself would envy.

* Once Kevin scoops up the cash prize, the summer’s first real consequence is introduced: Paul Abrahamian, runner-up of Season 18, walks through the front door — but since he’s moving in for the summer, he’ll be taking another houseguest’s place… and that person will be getting evicted tonight. Gasp!

Paul is then given a box of friendship bracelets, eight of which he’ll hand out to the houseguests he wants to keep safe from eviction. (Paul’s anxiety-ridden reaction, appropriately: “Oh, I’m throwing up somewhere.”) Once each contestant has a moment alone with Paul, offering him everything from pinky-swear promises to cheese sandwiches in exchange for safety, he announces who’ll get a coveted bracelet: Kevin, Raven, Dominique, Mark, Jason, Jessica, Ramses and Elena.

* As for the other houseguests, they’re left to compete in a Garden of Eden-esque endurance challenge, from which Cody and his chiseled bod emerge victorious. The unlucky trio that ends up on the chopping block: Jillian, Cameron and Christmas, each of whom grabbed a “poisoned apple” from the garden after falling off their trapeze.

* After being presented with the final temptation of the evening — let the eviction take place by a house vote, or compete with one another to decide who leaves — the nominees opt to let their fellow houseguests cast votes, leading to a whole lot of uncomfortable “Please keep me!” conversations in the final minutes of the episode.

Ultimately, though, by a vote of 8-3-2, microbiologist Cameron is the first one sent packing, proving it doesn’t always pay off to be a BB superfan.

With that, I turn it over to you. What did you think of Big Brother‘s Season 19 premiere? Are you rooting for any houseguests yet? Hit the comments with your thoughts!

Big Brother SHOCK as Sukhvinder Javeed quits as husband Imran is evicted https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-shock-as-sukhvinder-javeed-quits-as-husband-imran-is-evicted/ https://briefnews.eu/big-brother-shock-as-sukhvinder-javeed-quits-as-husband-imran-is-evicted/#respond Sat, 17 Jun 2017 02:52:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/big-brother-shock-as-sukhvinder-javeed-quits-as-husband-imran-is-evicted/

Tonight’s instalment saw Sukhvinder and Imran, Rebecca Jane, Kayleigh Morris, Raphael Korine and Charlotte Keys go head-to-head to stay in the house.

However, host Emma Willis was left noticeably shocked as she prepared to interview two contestants instead of one when Sukhvinder followed Imran out of the door once his name had been announced.

Sukhvinder then insisted that she didn’t have any regrets about leaving with Imran as she explained that she wanted to “tell their stories” together.

Admitting that they thought that there should’ve been other people voted out before them, Sukhvinder and Imran didn’t take long to voice their opinions on their fellow housemates.

Sukhvinder raged: “People are selfish and self-absorbed and don’t really give a s**t about other people.

“I don’t have to deal with other people [on the outside] so I’m not that confrontational.”

Tonight’s show also saw the VIPs Gemma Collins, Nicola McLean and Marnie Simpson leave the house… but not before causing chaos once again.

The trio were asked to pick someone to give immunity to, with Marnie choosing Kieran, Gemma naming Lotan and Nicola opting for Raph.

The latest eviction comes after the nominated housemates were told they might not last another week on the show in yet another explosive episode.

Joe Quaranta won the opportunity to give a killer nomination as part of a task and chose Raphael to face the boot, saying: ”He’s too intelligent, knows too much about Big Brother and hasn’t mucked in with everyone else.”

It was then revealed on spin-off show Big Brother’s Bit On The Side who else would be joining him.

Big Brother continues tomorrow night at 9pm on Channel 5.

Domestic violence victims are being evicted for calling 911 in a growing number of US cities https://briefnews.eu/domestic-violence-victims-are-being-evicted-for-calling-911-in-a-growing-number-of-us-cities/ https://briefnews.eu/domestic-violence-victims-are-being-evicted-for-calling-911-in-a-growing-number-of-us-cities/#respond Sun, 16 Apr 2017 17:18:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/domestic-violence-victims-are-being-evicted-for-calling-911-in-a-growing-number-of-us-cities/ Members of the New York Police DepartmentIn the city of Maplewood, Missouri, calling 911 to report violence in your home can get you evicted for being a “nuisance.” Rosetta Watson, a survivor of domestic abuse, learned this the hard way after she called police multiple times between September 2011 and February 2012 to report her former boyfriend.

In one incident, she has said, he kicked open her front door and attacked her in her bed, punching her in the face.

Watson didn’t know that Maplewood is one of a growing number of cities across the country with a “nuisance law,” also known as a “crime-free” or “disorderly house” ordinance.

Under Maplewood’s law, residents can be penalized for calling the police more than two times from the same address within an 180-day period, punished with eviction from their homes or even banishment from the city for up to six months; the law doesn’t differentiate between the sources and victims of the “nuisance activity.”

Though supporters of these ordinances say they deter crime and disorderly conduct, opponents argue that their real impact is to punish victims of violence and prevent them from calling for help.

Watson says that’s what happened to her: Evicted from the home she had rented for two years, she moved to St. Louis, where her ex-boyfriend found her and attacked her in July 2012, breaking into her new place and stabbing her in the legs. Even then, Watson says, she was afraid to call the St. Louis police; only when the hospital she’d gone to for treatment contacted law enforcement was her abuser arrested.

On Friday, the ACLU filed a lawsuit on Watson’s behalf, claiming that “the city of Maplewood violated [her] fundamental constitutional rights by enacting and enforcing a law that punishes crime victims merely because they ask for help,” as Tony Rothert, legal director of the ACLU of Missouri, said in a press release.

Unsurprisingly, nuisance ordinances are especially harmful to—and more likely to be enforced against—communities that already face discrimination in the housing market, such as people of color and people with mental disabilities.

The ACLU has taken on these laws before: Its lawyers sued the borough of Norristown, Pennsylvania, in 2013, and the city of Surprise, Arizona, in 2015. In both cases, the plaintiff was a survivor of domestic violence who’d faced eviction, and both suits resulted in repeal of the laws.

But nuisance ordinances seem to be popping up faster than the ACLU can swat them down. Last summer, NPR reported that municipalities in New York, Wisconsin, and Iowa had recently enacted them. Amanda Grieder, a city official in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, told NPR’s reporter that the law was intended to address the problem of police officers being called over and over to the same handful of properties.

“In addition to making sure that citizens in our city have the ability to live in neighborhoods free of nuisance activity, we also felt the need to recoup some of the costs of taxpayer-funded services,” she explained.

Grieder said the city had recently revised its statute in an effort to avoid targeting crime victims. But its ordinance allows for landlords to be fined hundreds or thousands of dollars for frequent 911 calls from their properties—a strong incentive to address the problem by evicting the tenant, whatever the cause of the calls may be.

That’s what happened to the ACLU’s Norristown plaintiff, Lakisha Briggs, who says her landlord didn’t want to evict her, but told her that he had no choice—the city would fine him $ 1,000 a day if she stayed. Briggs told NPR that she didn’t even make the final 911 call that put her on the street. She’d been determined not to call again, knowing that she was at risk of hitting her limit. Her abusive boyfriend even used the ordinance against her.

“After he found out that I was on my last and final strike, he kind of just like moved into my house,” she told NPR. It was “a really messed up situation,” she said. She wondered, “At this point, what do I do?”

One night, during a fight, Briggs’ boyfriend slit her neck with a broken ashtray, and she lost consciousness, awaking in a pool of her own blood.

“The first thing in my mind is, ‘Let me get out of this house’” before a neighbor called 911, she said. “I’d rather them find me on the street than find me at my house like this, because I’m going to get put out if the cops come here.”

She made it out the door, where an observer must have dialed for help, because the police arrived, and she was airlifted to the hospital. She learned a few days later that, as she had feared, she would pay for that assistance with her home.

Nuisance laws aren’t the only barrier stopping victims of domestic violence from calling for help. In some parts of the country, police frequently practice “dual arrests,” booking and charging both abuser and victim even if it’s clear which party was the primary aggressor.

Nationwide, this occurs in roughly 2 percent of cases of intimate partner violence, but in a recent investigation, ProPublica found that, in Connecticut, the rate of dual arrest is nearly ten times as high. “I can’t stress enough how traumatic it is for women who call the police and end up in the criminal court process,” said Jennifer Lopez, an advocate who works with survivors.

Most recently, reports of domestic violence in Latino communities have dropped precipitously since Donald Trump took office. Undocumented victims fear that calling for help will get them deported—and U.S. citizens or legal residents may also hesitate to bring the police into homes or neighborhoods where friends and family lack secure immigration status.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said in March that reports of rape had declined 25 percent among the city’s Latino population, and reports of domestic violence had fallen by 10 percent, with no such decline among other groups.

On Wednesday, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo announced another staggering statistic: Reports of rape are down 42.8 percent among Hispanics in that city as compared to last year, while reports of other violent crimes in the community have fallen 13 percent.

Nationally, the number of people suffering in silence at the hands of an abusive partner may be on the rise. But in Maplewood, Missouri, at least, another nuisance ordinance seems poised to fall.

The ACLU’s plaintiff, Watson, says the law cost her “my home, my community, and my faith in police to provide protection.” Now, she says, “I want to make sure that other women in Maplewood do not suffer the way I did.”
