Ina Fassbender/AFP/Getty Images Countries around the world are rushing to crush inflation. The price? A global economic downturn. In the US, the Federal Reserve chair, Jerome Powell, has warned that the fight against rising prices will "bring some pain" to Americans by slowing job growth, making mortgages and credit cards more expensive, and possibly prompting layoffs. He characterized the Fed's inflation target as "unconditional," offering a clear signal that the central bank will accept some economic discomfort — and even a recession — if it means ending the price surge. He's not alone. Central banks in the UK, Europe, Canada, Switzerland, Indonesia — more than 80 countries in all — are similarly slamming the brakes on their economies to curb inflation, according to the World Bank. Monetary tightening is the broadest its been in five decades, and as inflation hovers at worrying highs around the globe, it's unlikely any central banks will ease up soon. Policymakers' mission — to bring inflation to heel — has already caused downward revisions of forecasts for advanced economies' growth through 2023. Experts see job losses and weak wage growth on the horizon as economies shift into a lower gear. And businesses are already warning shareholders that things are only going to get tougher. Companies are already feeling the pain from the Fed's hiking cycle. On September 15, FedEx retracted its earnings forecast for the rest of the year and warned investors that the slowing economy will lead revenue to come up $ 500 million short of the firm's prior target. When asked by CNBC's Jim Cramer if the global economy is entering a recession, FedEx's CEO, Raj Subramaniam, put it plainly. "I think so," he said. Restoration Hardware's CEO, Gary Friedman, was more colorful when addressing recession worries in a September 8 earnings call. "We're in a recession. Anybody who thinks we're not in a recession is crazy," he told analysts. "The housing market is in a recession, and it's just getting started." Friedman and Subramaniam aren't alone. Of the companies included in the S&P 500, 240 brought up "recession" in their second-quarter-earnings calls, according to FactSet analysis. That's the highest share going back to 2010, when the firm started tracking such mentions. It also dwarfs the 212 "recession" citations seen at the start of the pandemic recession in early 2020. Stocks' initial reaction to companies' slowing growth can pull the broad market dramatically lower, as it did on September 16, when FedEx's report amplified worries of economic weakness. That translates to less household wealth at a time when the S&P 500 is almost 20% below last year's highs. Lower revenues and dampened profit forecasts can also lead to more immediate economic damage. Companies tend to cut costs to protect their margins when economic growth slows. That often shows up in the form of smaller raises, slimmed-down hiring plans, and, in the direst cases, widespread layoffs. At some firms, job losses are already here. The Gap is set to cut 500 corporate jobs by laying off staff and shedding some roles entirely, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal published Tuesday. The move comes amid falling revenue and earnings and marks a major shift toward cost-cutting. Tumbling sales have also prompted layoff plans at Walmart, Best Buy, and Bed Bath & Beyond in recent weeks. The former has also said it plans to hire fewer workers for the busy holiday season, further stoking concerns that waning demand will cut into the labor market's health. Sales are expected to keep slowing, and "the current macro environment trends could be even more challenging and have a larger impact for the remainder of the year," Matthew Bilunas, the chief financial officer of Best Buy, said in an August 30 earnings call. The Fed doesn't just expect some labor-market damage, it's betting on it. Powell has repeatedly highlighted the labor market's unusual tightness as a factor keeping inflation strong, with job openings still outpacing available workers two-to-one at the end of July. The US likely needs "softer labor market conditions" if it's to get over the inflation spell, the Fed chair said in a Wednesday press conference. That softening is looking increasingly bleak, however. Projections published by the central bank on Wednesday show officials bracing for weaker growth, higher unemployment, and stickier-than-expected inflation through 2023. Those three factors are the key components of a growth recession. If the Fed can get inflation lower with only a minor jump in unemployment, it's possible that the US can pivot to steady growth and a healthy economic expansion. Yet other central banks face the same predicament as the Fed, and as policymakers around the world rush to stifle inflation, the threat of a broader downturn looms large. More than 80 central banks are staring down the same problem. Inflation is well above their targets, but pulling it lower involves historically large rate hikes. Such a hiking cycle comes with some unappealing trade-offs, but most have echoed the Fed's message: Some weakness today is worth it to make sure inflation doesn't get stuck at four-decade highs. The Fed made its latest move on Wednesday, raising rates by another 0.75 percentage points to place its benchmark squarely in restrictive territory. "If we want to set ourselves up and really, really light the way to another period of very strong labor market, we have got to get inflation behind us," Powell said Wednesday. "I wish there were a painless way to do that. There isn't." That followed a hike of the same size by the European Central Bank on September 8. The ECB's 0.75-point hike was the first in its history and pushed its benchmark to the highest level since 2011. Officials noted that they expect to raise rates even higher to "guard against the risk of a persistent upward shift in inflation expectations," echoing the Fed's reasoning for such aggressive hiking. The Bank of England, meanwhile, raised interest rates by half a percentage point on Thursday, saying it would continue to "respond forcefully, as necessary" to elevated inflation. That so many central banks share the Fed's outlook could become a huge problem. The world's fight against inflation could spark recessions in several countries as policymakers dramatically tighten financial conditions and slow their economies to a halt. Such a globally synchronized downturn would be worse for everybody. A new study from the World Bank forecasts that should inflation prove more persistent than expected, the global economy could enter a downturn in 2023 before recovering the following year. Jobs would be lost en masse, high rates would crush some borrowers, and the recovery from the pandemic would give way to a new crisis. "Recent tightening of monetary and fiscal policies will likely prove helpful in reducing inflation," Ayhan Kose, the acting vice president for equitable growth, finance, and institutions at the World Bank, said. "But because they are highly synchronous across countries, they could be mutually compounding in tightening financial conditions and steepening the global growth slowdown." Central banks could be mere months away from a lose-lose scenario. If inflation doesn't start to cool soon, the prevailing options policymakers have are to slam the brakes on their economies and throw the world into a recession — or usher in an era of cripplingly fast price growth. https://i.insider.com/5fb6846732f2170011f6fffe?format=jpeg
Corporate earnings offer the first signs of an impending downturn
How a mild US slump becomes a deep global recession

I spend my days helping people learn how to coupon, find clearance deals, and save money.
I started my Instagram account in early 2020 because I was always telling people about the deals I was getting. My boyfriend at the time said, "Why don't you just put it online so the people interested in it will see it?" It just kind of grew from there.
My desire to find coupons came from a real need: In 2016, I was a broke college student and a new mom.
Everything was expensive and I was trying to find a way to save as much money as I could. I didn't really think I was going to get into couponing like I did. I thought I was just going to use coupons here and there, save a little bit of money. Then I realized just how much this could really impact people and how much money you really could save.
I started in 2021 with about 2,000 followers. At the beginning of this year, I had 10,000. Now, I'm at 23,000. It used to be a side gig thing, but with the referrals, brand deals and sponsorships, this is my main job. It's great. Growing up, I always wanted to do something for myself on my own and not worry about being bossed around by people.
When I wake up, I'll check different apps and see if any rebates have been posted. If they have, then I kind of cross-check with the sales going on with Target, Publix, CVS, wherever. Then, I search for coupons online. Really all you have to do is Google the brand and the coupon you're trying to find. Google does a pretty good job of pulling up anything relevant.
Then I go to the store, find the deals, and take pictures and videos. After that, I post the deals for people on my page.
Over the past couple of years and especially since Covid started, more companies are starting to pull coupons out of the Sunday paper insert. The Smart Source inserts also harder to find. But you can get the coupons digitally, like through the Kroger app or the Target app.
A lot of stores are now changing their coupon policies; they're not wanting to accept printable coupons or paper coupons anymore because of people using them illegally or printing multiple coupons. I think a lot of stores and a lot of brands are going digital, so they want people to do more of the apps and the rebate apps.
There are ways to save pretty much across the board. I never pay for toilet paper, skincare products or makeup – even diapers and wipes. You can get those extremely cheap. I think the main things that people for sure can get for free, or even make money getting through rebate apps, are toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner. The things people use every day, there is no need to ever pay for those because there's always a sale, a coupon or a rebate app that you can use to get them for free.
I use a multitude of apps, but if anyone was going to get just one app, get Ibotta. It has the most rebates on it and it's super user-friendly. All you have to is upload your receipt, click the items you got, then you get reimbursed through an account.

Netflix is keeping Christmas alive (so to speak) with a post-holiday delivery on Thursday, Dec. 26: A killer new season of YOU.
Loosely based on Hidden Bodies, the second novel in Caroline Kepnes’ series about serial killer Joe Goldberg, YOU‘s second season relocates the bludgeoning bookworm from New York to Los Angeles in the hopes of making a fresh start.
“For Season 1, New York was instrumental in telling this particular love story — and whenever I say ‘love story,’ it’s a little bit in quotes, of course,” executive producer Sera Gamble tells TVLine. There’s a very particular romantic feeling that comes with being in New York as a young person. You’re young, free, you’re struggling and you’re trying to find a kindred spirit. Los Angeles is a completely different vibe. I’ve lived here since I was 16, and one of the classic truisms about living in L.A. is that you’re surrounded by former New Yorkers who f–ing hate it here. So we started the writers’ room for Season 2 by being like, ‘Joe moves to L.A. and he completely hates it. Let’s talk about how much fun that is.’”
But secrets don’t always stay buried, and old habits — unlike Joe’s growing list of victims — tend to die hard. And along with Joe’s new location comes a new group of individuals who will find themselves drawn into his orbit, for better or (usually) worse. From a new love interest to an old flame back from the “dead,” we’ve got the scoop on everyone you’ll meet as Joe (or is it Will?) moves west to unleash hell in the City of Angels.
Browse our gallery of YOU‘s new additions — you can click here for direct access — then drop a comment with your thoughts below. Will you binge Season 2 as soon as it arrives on Thursday?

James Haskell meanwhile was sorting through the chest where the rations of rice and beans are stored.
“We have got to be way better at this food organisation, we’ve got 21 (packets of) beans in here,” he said.
“What?!” exclaimed Ian, “And we are getting the same amount of rice to beans?”
Jacqueline Jossa then explained not everyone has been eating the beans.

Game of Thrones season four episode titled The Mountain and the Viper saw Oberyn Martell (played by Pedro Pascal) die in a thrilling, yet devastating battle against Ser Gregor Clegane, otherwise known as The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson).
Fans will remember the combat scene that saw Oberyn offer his services as Tyrion Lannister’s (Peter Dinklage) champion in a trial by combat.
The Red Viper impressed the crowd despite not being dressed for battle and having drunk before the match, taunting his opponent and attempting to get his confession for the rape and murder of Elia.
However, just when Oberyn appeared to be winning things took a turn for the worst as he met one of the show’s many gruesome endings as The Mountain crushed him to death.
But one fan doesn’t think the Red Viper should have died, taking to account the wound he inflicted upon his opponent before he was killed.
The scene saw Oberyn stab Gregor in the stomach severing his hamstring before he stabs him again through the breast plate.
Reddit user AnemicRoyalty10 explained that once the spear had been pulled from Gregor, it’s highly unlikely he would have been able to fight, as his circulatory system would have shut down.
The user said: “It seems rather preposterous that he would be able to lift all 400 plus pounds of himself off the ground to get aholt of Oberyn after tripping him,
“which is probably all anyone would have been able to do, especially after poison had been coursing through his body for what seemed like a long time, on top of a direct hit to the heart.
The user noted the show was of the fantasy genre, but still revealed the death took away from the realism.

The user continued: “To me this debunks the theory that GOT was truly realistic.
“A more realistic outcome, as a commenter pointed out, would have been for Oberyn to win, Cersei to fly into a rage, and chaos to ensue, maybe Oberyn misses Tywin with a spear, etc.
“Instead what happened seemed to just be done for shock value and to shoehorn in a vintage GOT moment”.
Moreover, the theorist explains Oberyn should have been allowed more screen time and character development.
However, other fans disagreed as one user commented: “In the books I’m fairly certain he uses a poison that has a very slow and painful death that takes time to set in.
“Plus, I think his spear just punctures in armour in like his gut too so I don’t think that would’ve instantly killed him”
Another theory suggested Oberyn was responsible for killing Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance)
Reddit user Exex123 wrote: “Just realised about Oberyn. Being foolish during his duel with The Mountain actually led to the death of his main target, Tywin Lannister.
“If he had just finished The Mountain off, Tyrion would never have killed his father.”
Oberyn’s death had lead to Tyrion’s imprisonment, and during the escape of which was when Tyrion killed his father.
The Handmaid’s Tale viewers have experienced yet another harrowing and brutal season.
June Osbourne (played by Elisabeth Moss) has gone up against another bout of hardships, and is not yet any closer to getting her daughter and escaping.
Although her progress is slow, all hope is not yet lost, as pointed out by some astute viewers on The Handmaid’s Tale Reddit.
The show’s source material of the same name is told from the perspective of tapes recorded by June whilst she was held captive.
And while no tapes have been recorded as of yet, fans think this is proof June will ultimately survive her ordeal against Gilead.
Reddit-user NightOwlWishes explained: “I realised that we’re probably just seeing June’s memories of Gilead.
“The whole show is supposed to be based on the tapes June recorded in the book that were found like a hundred years after Gilead’s fall, right?”
The user went on to explain the behind the scenes featurette saw June actor Elisabeth explain flashback scenes were cut from the latest episode.
“So, my theory,” continued the fan. “Is that all we are seeing is literally what June could remember about Gilead.
“That’s why so many of the characters seem to be out of the picture, because June didn’t know where they were or what they were doing at the time.”

Later in the discussion post NightOwlWishes theorised the long-running close-up shots of June were used to emphasise how she was feeling at the time.
If this is indeed the reason viewers are seeing a closed view of her story, it would certainly mean June survives until the end of the show.
So far she has overcome a number of harrowing events, including childbirth, a manhunt, and constant beating.
But will she eventually be able to escape with her daughter unharmed?
Meanwhile viewers have also been poring over the scenes involving Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski).
And recently they have pointed out that a subtle nod towards the phone in her bag may be pointing towards her upcoming escape from the dictatorship.
A fan wrote: “I don’t think that the creators would have taken the time to show the phone in Serena’s handbag at the airport.
“I think that while she wants Nichole back, she wants to do it in a place that Nichole can have all of the advantages.
“Why else would she have fought so hard for it?”
The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 continues 9pm Wednesdays on Hulu on Wednesdays and Sundays on Channel 4.
Line of Duty stunned viewers on Sunday night when John Corbett (played by Stephen Graham) was killed in an epic storyline twist.
Ahead of the penultimate episode airing this weekend, ITV This Morning hosted by Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford had invited two police officers into the studio to discuss how close the BBC drama was to reality.
Peter Bleksley, a former Undercover Detective, also recognised for his role on Channel 4’s Hunted sat alongside Marc Cananur a serving Detective Sergeant and discussed the mystery of ‘H’.
Keen to hear their theories, viewers saw Eamonn quiz: “Who is H? Who do you think H is? Do you have a guess?”
Peter was first to answer and immediately threw all previous suspicions into the air: “Is it a person or a place?
“Cast your mind back to the flats where people were being held, do you remember one was Flat B?”
As for what Marc thought, he decided it was best to keep his opinion to himself and be diplomatic, he said: “You’re taking it from a very evidential perspective. I’m going to receive judgment for my thoughts so I won’t say anything.”
Eamonn then turned his attempts to asking about the incorrect spelling of ‘definately’ which was seen when H spoke to John over a live web chat back in episode three.
Viewers were convinced the use of the ‘A’ instead of an ‘I’ was a clue.
“You’ve analysed this more than I have at this moment Eamonn,” Marc responded jokingly.
As for how realistic the programme is compared some of the work the police carry out in reality, Marc commented: “It’s an entertainment programme.
“I’m a fan, I want to know what happens, every week. [But] people would be turning off in their drives if they had to see what happened on a daily basis.”
And Ruth was keen to find out: “Why? Because it’s not as exciting?” To which Marc clarified: “Yes”.
It comes after actor Adrian Dunbar who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings spoke out about ‘H’ and the current storyline.
During a conversation with The Telegraph, Adrian revealed he “didn’t know” which culprit was ‘H’.
Many viewers have been in uproar since a suggestion came to the forefront claiming Hastings could be the culprit.
And the Irish actor answered whether or not there was any truth int he claim. he said: “Well, that’s the question a lot of people are asking. It’s difficult, you know… we might find out at some point.”
After some teasing, Adrian clarified he “didn’t know” who the mysterious bent copper is, Hastings or not. And if Adrian doesn’t know, then surely it can’t be the Superintendent?
But to add to this, filming for series five wrapped up a long time ago, and all the episodes have been scheduled to air later this month and into May which suggests viewers may not out who ‘H’ is until series six, or even worse, series seven.
To add to this, there are many questions left unanswered when Lee Banks returned on Sunday night to visit Hastings, but what did he want?
Line of Duty returns to BBC One this Sunday at 9pm.
