THE FATE of the euro was always going to depend on Italy. With annual GDP of more than €1.6trn ($ 1.9trn), about 15% of euro-area output and debt of nearly €2.3trn, it poses a challenge to the single currency that Europe seems unable to manage but cannot avoid. Matters are now coming to a head, as Italy’s new coalition government instigates a showdown over the European Union’s fiscal rules. The disagreement might well become disastrous. The pound to euro exchange rate ended last week with sterling trading fairly low in the region of €1.124.

However, an expert has told Express.co.uk there may be a “lift” to the pound.

Laura Parsons, currency analyst at TorFX, spoke to Express.co.uk regarding the latest exchange rate figures.

She said: “The GBP/EUR exchange rate closed out last week trading in the region of €1.124 as the pound found little reason to rally.”

However, she added there are a few event this week that may affect the pound’s standing.

“Today’s run of Eurozone data could have an impact on the pairing.

“But, investors will also be looking ahead to a Thursday and the Bank of England’s (BoE) long-awaited interest rate decision.

“A rate hike from the BoE could give the pound a lift this week, but if the central bank keeps rates on hold we could easily see GBP/EUR falling to new multi-month lows.”

Higher interested rates announced by the banks would boost the British economy.

This is because they attract investment into the country, boosting the value of sterling.

Many Britons will have their fingers crossed for a positive movement in the sector.

Currently the Post Office is offering traveller’s 1.1015 euros for the pound.

If you exchange £750 you will get £826.13 in return.

In comparison to this week, last week was a “data-light week for the UK” in terms of the pound to euro exchange rate. 

Laura Parsons said on Friday: “The European Central Bank (ECB) delivered its latest interest rate decision.

“The central bank’s comments were both unsurprising and uninspiring in terms of euro movement, so the GBP/EUR exchange rate remained around the €1.125 level.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said she and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed on Tuesday to create a eurozone budget charged with boosting investment. The weak pound against the euro has meant Britons looking for good value beach resorts should look outside the Eurozone.

Bulgaria and Turkey are far cheaper than their lowest-priced Eurozone competitors, including Portugal’s Algarve and Spain’s Costa del Sol.

This is according to this year’s Post Office Travel Money Holiday Costs Barometer, which has crowned the Bulgarian resort of Sunny Beach as the best value beach resort for the fifth year running.

Despite prices rising 16 per cent since last spring, the Black Sea resort is still the most economical for Britons on the hunt for a bargain.

The study revealed that a couple could enjoy an evening meal with wine for £26, or lunch for less than £9.

In fact, tourist staples cost less than half the price of two-thirds of the other destinations surveyed by Post Office Travel Money.

Turkish resorts also represent excellent value for money in this year’s Holiday Costs Barometer.

Coming in second, the survey revealed holidaying in Marmaris on the Mediterranean coast would make Britons money stretch further.

This is in part due to the plummeting Turkish lira, down 25 per cent against sterling, year-on-year.

To add to that, local prices in Marmaris remain low due to healthy competition between restaurants and bars, who want to entice tourists.

As a result, costs in Marmaris are down 20 per cent compared with last year.

Meanwhile, prices on the opposite side of the Europe have spiked – Portugal’s Algarve has seen a 17 per cent increase in costs, which is 20 per cent more than in Marmaris and a whopping 57 per cent more than in Sunny Beach.

Spain’s Costa Del Sol is even costlier, with tourist staples coming to £72.

However, the Balearic island of Ibiza was surveyed as Spain’s most expensive destination, costing 65 per cent more than the Costa Del Sol.

Andrew Brown, from Post Office Travel Money, commented: “This may well be the year when it will pay to plan a trip outside the Eurozone.

“There has already been reports of growing demand for Turkey as low-priced packages attract cash-conscious UK holidaymakers. Now a combination of the Turkish lira’s weakness and low resort prices will make resorts like Marmaris even more attractive for holiday markets on a tight budget.

“The cost of eating out is always a big consideration for holidaymakers and this year we found that meal costs in Sunny Beach and Marmaris are significant lower than in any of the Eurozone resorts surveyed. On a week’s holiday, the cost of lunch and dinner ranges from £243 in Sunny Beach and £287 in Marmaris to well over twice as much in Sorrento.

“That’s why it will pay to do your homework before booking a resort that fits your budget.”

The pound weighed in against the euro at 1.1460 this morning according to the latest Bloomberg figures. 

This figure indicates a slight dip from the exchange rate yesterday that saw the pound trading at 1.1468.

The GBP/EUR exchange rate has been in a state of flux over the last few weeks as the ‘Beast from the East” swept across the UK causing a fall in consumer spending. 

Despite a fall in retail sales reported by the Bank of England citing “some evidence of financial distress”, the pound managed to stabilise over the Easter weekend. 

Speaking to the Express.co.uk, currency analyst at TorFX, Laura Parsons, outlined her predictions for the remainder of the week. 

She said: “The GBP/EUR exchange rate remained trading in the region of €1.145 on Wednesday despite the UK’s construction PMI revealing a decline in output. 

“Although the Eurozone’s unemployment rate fell to a fresh five-year low, the euro failed to see much benefit in light of mixed inflation data for the currency bloc.

“While non-core inflation increased to 1.4 per cent, the core measure remained at 1.0 per cent instead of rising to 1.1 per cent as expected.”

Economics are keeping a close eye on the Eurozone’s sales data that is expected to be announced soon. 

Laura explained: “Today’s UK services PMI and the Eurozone’s retail sales report could both inspire volatility in the pound to euro exchange rate.” 

She went on to add: “The UK’s services sector accounts for over 70 per cent of total GDP, so if output declines as expected it would put Sterling under pressure. 

“Conversely, the Eurozone’s retail sales report is projected to show a euro-positive rebound in monthly activity.”

According to Eurostat, the Eurozone unemployment rate dropped to 8.5 per cent in February this year. 

A drop from 8.6 per cent in January and 9.7 per cent in February 2017.

This is the lowest recorded rate in Eurozone unemployment since December 2008. 

Last week saw a similar exchange rate in the pound with the GBP/EUR trading at 1.144 on Wednesday.

Despite Germany’s lower that forecast data, the pound managed to remain steady.

Laura explained: “Although disappointing data from Germany reduced demand for the euro on Tuesday, the pound’s gains against the common currency were limited amid an absence of pertinent news from the UK.”

She went on to add “Germany’s Gfk consumer confidence index is also forecast to show a decline in sentiment, a result which could give the pound more impetus to climb against the euro.”

Anyone looking to exchange today can expect a rate of £1.1165 from the Post Office when trading £400 and over.

The pound to euro exchange rate saw the GBP currency fall against EUR today, Tuesday 30 January.

Pound Sterling is converting to €1.1355. in figures accurate at 7:30am.

This is lower compared to yesterday, when the pound converted to €1.1394.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Laura Parsons, TorFX currency analyst said the pound could come back up today.

‘The pound extended its decline against the euro over the course of Tuesday, dropping back to the €1.135 level.

According to Laura, this has come “ahead of a run of influential ecostats for the Eurozone.” 

“Today’s German inflation numbers could help Sterling creep back towards last week’s highs if they show a decline in consumer price pressures.”

“However, the Eurozone’s growth stats are expected to be sturdy and could limit any EUR losses.”

Yesterday, Laura said there was “positive potential” for the pound this week.

She noted the pound stayed at “post referendum highs” against the US dollar.

She said: “After peaking at an eight-month high of €1.150 last week, the GBP/EUR exchange rate dropped from its best levels in the wake of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) rate decision.

“Speculation about the future of ECB monetary policy drove the euro higher across the board on Thursday.

“The common currency held gains heading into the weekend.

“With UK data lacking, speeches from ECB officials may be the main cause of GBP/EUR fluctuations in the hours ahead.

“Any vaguely hawkish remarks could see Sterling lose more ground to the euro.

“However, the pound remains at post-referendum highs against the US dollar and has the potential to extend last week’s bullish run if sentiment surrounding the UK’s economic outlook remains positive.”
