Then came the backlash: As the newspaper continued to churn out stories about the country club incident, the majority of White-owned businesses that had been supporting the paper by running ads pulled their business, leaving the paper struggling to run the presses and pay staff. Managing director Ken Gordon, co-founder Vernon Charles and other senior management figures at the newspaper sat for hours in a brainstorming session at the paper’s offices, determined to come up with a way to ride out the boycott. It helped that the stories had driven circulation up, even as ad revenue fell.
“At that time a newspaper might have been selling for 25 cents,” Gordon says. “To produce that paper may have cost you a dollar or $ 1.20.” The traditional newspaper model mostly runs on ads, with the cost of the paper itself covering just a small portion of how much it costs to print it. But that wasn’t working anymore. “We were right up against the wall,” Gordon says. They decided to cut the paper to just 16 pages, paring operating costs as much as possible to ride out the controversy.

It worked. The Express’ Gordon and his friend Harold Hoyte at the Nation newspaper in Barbados would eventually become household names throughout the Caribbean as well as among journalists in the wider British Commonwealth for going toe-to-toe with the White establishment in their countries to launch Black-owned-and-operated media houses. Their newspapers would rapidly supplant legacy newspapers that had long controlled the media narrative in their countries. Gordon, in particular, used his skills and experience to strengthen other media houses around the region and their ability to operate as independent media houses and guardians of democracy.
There was this view that locals could write in a paper but they could not manage it. … And I took exception to that.
Ken Gordon, Trinidad Express
Gordon joined the Express as managing director in 1969, two years after it was founded. It was the heady era of Black militancy, which spread from the United States and began to make its presence felt in the Caribbean. It was also a time when young, middle-class Black men like Gordon and Hoyte wanted to make their mark and prove their prowess as entrepreneurs.
“There was this view that locals could write in a paper but they could not manage it. That was a popular view at the time. And I took exception to that,” Gordon says. So did Hoyte, and their shared vision led to a lifelong partnership.
When Gordon applied to work as an announcer at Radio Trinidad in the late 1940s, no Black Trinidadian had as yet ever been employed in such a position. The same day, the managing director’s secretary, who lived a few houses down from Gordon, invited him over to show him an ad from 10 years ago for the job he’d just landed. It said: “Announcer needed. Only Whites need apply.”
It was the Express’ coverage of the Dr. Hanna story and the Black Power movement of the early ’70s that led to boycotts of the paper by the White establishment. But that same coverage brought the Express its unprecedented success.
The establishment in Trinidad and Tobago at the time favored the Trinidad Guardian, a decades-old British-owned newspaper. Meanwhile, the Express came to be viewed by many in Trinidadian society as reflecting their own interests and reality. When the Express’ burgeoning circulation made it the undisputed leader among Trinidad and Tobago’s papers in the 1970s, advertisers who had formerly boycotted the newspaper eventually returned.
Prominent Trinidadian journalist Wesley Gibbings, who was the founding president of the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers, credits Gordon’s business acumen for the Express’ turnaround, noting that Gordon was a former Junior Chamber of Commerce president. “[It was a case of] the businessman becoming a defender of press freedom,” Gibbings says. “And as a media pioneer, his role is again virtually unparalleled in the region. His reach extended throughout the length and breadth of the Caribbean because he had this concern about building independent and democratic media.”

Today, the Express is part of a large media collective, One Caribbean Media, which resulted from a merger of newspapers and radio networks in Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. The business end has been successful, says Penn State University assistant professor Juliette Storr, a Bahamian and former journalist herself, but “especially since the merger in 2006 the focus has been more on the bottom line, [thus] forfeiting the public interest.”
Hoyte and Gordon became business colleagues in 1974, after Gordon learned about Hoyte’s efforts to replicate the Express’ success in Barbados with the Nation newspaper. Gordon helped the then-struggling Barbadian newspaper with his newspaper management expertise. The Nation went on to achieve such success that it was lauded by the prime minister as a beacon for Black businesses. Gordon also reached out to the Stabroek in Guyana and the Torchlight in Grenada when the papers came under government pressure, as well as publications in Jamaica, St. Lucia and Dominica, helping them achieve financial viability and success as media businesses.
“If we were going to be threatened by people who wanted to take charge of the press, we had to fight that not just in Trinidad but around the Caribbean,” says Gordon. “Otherwise, they would have picked us off one by one.”

The position of US establishment is to blame for the counter-productive policy of sanctions against Russia, President Vladimir Putin said while describing his Helsinki meeting with President Donald Trump as “useful.”

The death of Dawn Sturgess from what police say was exposure to Novichok has sparked a new fit of Russia-blaming, as an MP, high-profile commentators and mainstream journalists pointed the finger at Moscow.

As British police launched a murder investigation into the poisoning and death of Dawn Sturgess, 44, in Amesbury, various self-styled chemical weapons experts on Twitter have cried for Russia’s blood, squarely blaming Moscow for the incident yet in the early stages of the investigation.
Mike Gapes, the Labour and Co-operative MP for Ilford South who recently got some limelight by urging British parliamentarians against providing any commentary to RT, immediately named Russia as a party responsible for Sturgess’ death.
“This was a murder of a British citizen as a result of use of a chemical nerve agent produced by the Russian state,” Gapes wrote on Twitter, voicing something even Theresa ‘highly likely’ May has yet been wary of saying.
Sad news that Novichok victim Dawn Sturgess has died. This was a murder of a British citizen as a result of use of a chemical nerve agent produced by the Russian state.
— Mike Gapes (@MikeGapes) July 8, 2018
Gapes’ vitriol was joined by Kremlin watchers from UK establishment media, Russia correspondent for The Telegraph Alec Luhn, and The Guardian’s Luke Harding.
Harding, a well-known critic of the Russian government, implied that Sturgess was “collateral damage” of the Kremlin-orchestrated operation that was the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March in Salisbury.
“Dawn Sturgess dies after exposure to #novichok. The circumstances unclear. An utter indifference to collateral damage one of the hallmarks of the #Putin regime and its extra-territorial operations,” he tweeted.

— Luke Harding (@lukeharding1968) July 8, 2018
Harding was a long-time Guardian correspondent in Moscow until 2011, when he was denied entry into Russia after violating accreditation rules. While the issue was promptly resolved and he was allowed back several days later, Harding alleged that he was a victim of a Kremlin crackdown on dissenting opinions.
Alec Luhn, another high-profile Russia critic, has used Sturgess’ death to defy Russian President Vladimir Putin, who, commenting on the Skripals poisoning, said that if the father and daughter were indeed attacked by a military-grade toxic agent they would not have survived.
Putin’s remark, according to Luhn’s logic, somehow gives more credibility to the version that it was Moscow behind the Salisbury poisoning.
“Vladimir Putin previously argued that the Russian state couldn’t have used a military nerve agent in the UK because the victims would have died. Now one of them has,” Luhn wrote.

Some commentators have gone as far as accusing the Russian president of personally killing Sturgess. The upcoming Trump-Putin summit in Helsinki was inevitably dragged into the picture.
“Putin is a murderer. What are the odds Trump doesn’t bring this up next week. Putin is our ENEMY!!!” Brian Krassenstein, an editor at Hill Reporter with nearly 500,000 Twitter followers, wrote.
Since the 12 July meeting was announced, hardliners have ostracized the US President for cozying up to his supposed puppet master, denouncing him as “traitor-in-chief” for his intention to have good relations with Russia and calling the Russian leader “fine.”
READ MORE: Amesbury poisoning incident fuels another wave of anti-Russian hysteria
Far from everyone was convinced by the allegations of Russian involvement, which is still based entirely on speculation, as it’s unclear at this stage how Sturgess came into contact with the substance. Moreover, neither Sturgess nor her partner Charlie Rowley, 45, who remains in critical condition in the hospital, have nothing in their background to suggest they might be of interest to the Kremlin, police said.
However, when faced with backlash (or, indeed, legitimate questions) over his tweet, Gapes preferred to label anyone asking for evidence or doubting Russia’s guilt “Kremlin bots” and “squawking abusive trolls” from Russia.
Lots of skwawking abusive trolls on here tonight following my tweet about the Novichok murder. Seems that they are working late in St Petersburg. Block button ready.
— Mike Gapes (@MikeGapes) July 8, 2018
Gapes reacted the same way when he was accused of attempting to censor alternative opinions in the wake of his attack on RT. At the time, he called those who ventured to disagree with him “Putin apologists.”

Manning is a threat to the status quo, and the establishment is going to unleash every dirty trick to try and suggest that she’s not a real candidate, Arvin Vohra, Vice Chair of the Libertarian National Committee said.
US whistleblower and former US Army soldier Chelsea Manning announced she will be running for a seat in a Senate for the state of Maryland. Following her statement, some members in the Democratic Party, including the head of its leading think tank, accused the Kremlin of being behind Manning’s decision and that Moscow is again trying to subvert American democracy.
RT:What do you make of the claims that the Kremlin is behind this run for the Senate seat?
Arvin Vohra: I am running for that same senate seat, and even I’m the first who admit it – such a claim is nonsensical. Chelsea Manning is an American hero. This is the person who brought forth what was going on in Guantanamo Bay, the horrible abuses. This is the person that brought the information for the famous ‘Collateral Murder’ video that showed what the US military was actually doing. This is somebody who has been reporting to the American people what the US government has been hiding from the American people. Manning is an absolute hero to the American people… If the Russian government has a bunch of American heroes sitting around like that, I encourage them to please send more of them our way.
RT:What would be the motivation for influential Democrats to be spreading sorts of conspiracy theories such as this?
AV: There is a good chance that Manning will embrace some of the anti-establishment views that they are afraid of. I don’t know all of her policies… Maybe she is opposed to foreign wars; maybe she wants to shut down the military base and bring the troops home; maybe she opposes the NSA wireless wiretapping. There could be a million things that she supports that the establishment, that Democrats don’t like. If that is the case then she is a threat. Now they have an actual person registered as a Democrat saying the things that Democrats will not usually say in a state in which they are very established. Maryland is basically a very, very Democratic state, and this is somebody who has the name power, has the public support, has a star recognition, it is somebody that the American people, including her opponents like me, could have just the highest respect and honor. So she is at threat to the establishment, she is at threat to the status quo, and of course they’re going to do every silly dirty trick they can to try to suggest that she is not a real candidate.
RT: In today’s climate, the way that US-Russia relations are evolving, are Americans likely to believe this sort of thing.
AV: I imagine probably a few people will, but I think the vast majority of the people will see her acts of heroism. They watched the collateral murder video. They’ll see the information about Guantanamo Bay that she shared that was published by the New York Times… That really shed light on the horrific atrocities being committed by the US government against non-military, non-combatants that are just prisoned there without trial.
When people see the amazing good that she’s done, when they see the great work that she’s done, I think they are going to side with her; they are going to side against the Democratic Party establishment. They are going to say: “Here is somebody that we can look up to. Here is somebody that we can trust. Here is somebody that is an American hero that is going to fight some of these establishment policies.”
RT:What would Russia even really stand to gain by encouraging Manning to run for the Senate?
AV: Unless Russia has become an American crony capitalist state – which I don’t think it has – here is nothing for Russia to gain. There are many things, however, for established interest to gain from keeping an anti-establishment candidate out. For example, there are so many established interests in Maryland and in Washington DC, who get unfair privileges from the government, who get huge subsidies from the government, who get all kinds of regulatory benefits. They are used to getting those from because they are well-connected with the Democratic Party establishment.
Someone like Chelsea Manning could turn that on its head. She can turn that around. It is one of the reasons that I am so excited to be in the same race; that is one of the reasons so many people in America are so excited to see a true American hero, really stepping up and standing up to the establishment. And we know she can do it, because she’s already done it. She’s already put her own freedom and safety on the line to fight for the American people. Even though I am running against her, even though I have some different policies, that is someone I can respect.

Republican Rep. Martha McSally of Arizona is emerging as the GOP establishment’s favorite to replace retiring Sen. Jeff Flake.
But McSally could run into trouble in a possible run against Republican opponents including former state Sen. Kelli Ward — who is backed by former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and pro-President Donald Trump media — for past comments critical of Trump.
US News and World Report reported last month that McSally was taking steps toward launching a campaign for Flake’s seat, as she indicated interest in the vacancy during a closed-door meeting with the rest of Arizona’s GOP House delegation. The news came after three of Arizona’s other GOP congressmen — Reps. Trent Franks, Paul Gosar, and David Schweikert — ruled out runs for Flake’s seat.
GOP sources told the outlet that McSally has become the consensus candidate of lawmakers and donors.
On Tuesday, The Arizona Republic reported that McSally told House colleagues she is running for the seat.
In an environment in which Bannon has promised to challenge the establishment at every level in 2018, McSally’s past Trump criticism could become an issue.
During a town hall earlier this year, for instance, she called the early weeks of the administration “tremendously bumpy.”
“Some of their decisions and the way they have implemented them have certainly not been well coordinated, not well implemented,” she said. “I’m concerned about distractions. I’m concerned about not shifting from campaigning to governing.”
“He’s our president. So what are we going to do about it?” McSally said.
In a secretly taped recording posted this spring, McSally, who represents somewhat of a swing district in the state, said the current political environment “would have me not prevail” and that “we’re going to hand the gavel to Pelosi in 2018,” referring to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
“They only need 23 seats and the path to that gavel being handed over is through my seat,” she said, noting that “any” GOP member of Congress is “going down with the ship.”
“There’s just an element out there that’s just, like, so against the president,” she said. “Like they just can’t see straight. And all of a sudden on January 20, I’m like his twin sister. I’m, like, responsible for everything he does, and tweets and says. And they want me to be spending my time as a pundit. ‘I disagree with that. I agree with this.’ I have a job in the legislature! … We’re doing the best we can through the minefield that we have to navigate with a tremendous amount of distractions out there.”
McSally refused to make an endorsement during the presidential campaign, but said of Trump, “That’s just not how leaders carry themselves.”

“But I don’t think people should dismiss what he is hearing from people about the level of frustration about lack of opportunity and concerns about safety and security,” she said. “How you deal with that, what you think the solution is — hopefully we can get to where that’s a battle of ideas of public policy solutions for complex problems as opposed to a WWF tournament.”
The Bannon faction has already begun to sound the alarm on McSally.
“If the McConnell establishment runs another ‘Never Trumper’ in Arizona like Martha McSally, expect the full weight of the president’s America First movement to come down upon her like a ton of bricks,” Andy Surabian, an adviser to the Trump-aligned Great America Alliance and a close Bannon adviser, told US News.
Several influential conservative groups, including the Club for Growth and FreedomWorks, said Friday they would oppose a McSally run.
A representative for McSally didn’t respond to a request for comment.
But McSally does have Trump bona-fides that she could stand behind during a campaign. The Arizona Republic recently reported that McSally is the state’s most reliable vote in Congress for Trump’s agenda — more so than the state’s multiple Freedom Caucus members. And in May remarks at the White House, Trump called McSally “my friend” and the “real deal.”
Ross D. Franklin/APAt the moment, Ward is the frontrunner for the seat. But many fear that she is too fringe of a candidate to win in a general election. Last year, Ward ran a losing primary campaign against Sen. John McCain.
What Ward has going for her is increased name recognition and the backing of Trump’s “America First” coalition.
Trump has tweeted in support of Ward’s candidacy, but he has not endorsed the former state senator.
And one of Trump’s top donors, the billionaire hedge fund manager Robert Mercer, has donated $ 300,000 to a pro-Ward super PAC, Politico reported.
Yet in the same month, following a Phoenix rally, Trump met with two possible candidates who had yet to jump into the race: Arizona Treasurer Jeff DeWit and former state GOP Chairman Robert Graham.
In addition to DeWit and Graham, former Rep. Matt Salmon and Jay Heiler, a member of the Arizona Board of Regents, are also considered to be potential candidates in the race.

The Mooch has emerged from the ashes of his short-lived White House career to claim there is an establishment effort to eject Trump from the White House, and that the president should have been “much harsher” on white supremacists in Charlottesville.
“I think there are elements inside of Washington, also inclusive of the White House, that are not necessarily abetting the president’s interests or his agenda,” Scaramucci told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in his first appearance since he was fired from his role after only 10 days.
“For whatever reason, people have made the decision that they want to eject him. It’s almost like he has opened up the door for America’s CEOs and America’s billionaires to enter Washington’s political system,” the former Wall Street executive explained. “The members of that political class do not like that.”
Scaramucci also referred to a “Bannon-bart” influence within the White House that is “nonsensical” and impeding the president’s progress, referring to strategist and former Breitbart head Steve Bannon.
He predicted there will be further staff changes within the administration, explaining he thinks Trump is “getting his arms around the fact that if he wants to prosecute his agenda he’s got to bring in loyalists to him, and he’s got to bring in, I think, a different strategy.”
“He’s done a tremendous amount I think he’s done way better in terms of progress as president that’s been prominently displayed.” he added.
Scaramucci said he wouldn’t have recommended the statement Trump gave on the attack in Charlottesville on Saturday, saying that it should have been “much harder” on the white supremacists involved. He commended national security advisor General HR McMaster for calling out the car-ramming that killed one and injured 19 terrorism.
Trump has been criticized for condemning the violence on “many sides,” instead of referencing the white supremacist violence.
“With the moral authority of the president, you have to call that out,” Scaramucci said.
Scaramucci made his feelings for Bannon clear during his short-lived communications chief role, when he told a New Yorker reporter he wasn’t “trying to suck my own c*ck,” like Bannon. “I’m not trying to build my own brand off the f**king strength of the president..”
He told Stephanopoulos, “I think the president knows what he’s going to do with Steve Bannon,” adding Trump has “a very good idea of who the leakers are” in the White House, as well as those who are “undermining his agenda.”
Bannon has been accused of using the right-wing Breitbart to attack McMaster through negative leaks. The national security advisor has appeared in an array of negative stories on the website.

RT is offering you the chance to hold the rich and powerful to account, through the power of satire.
RT UK is joining forces with the legendary force of satire The Establishment Club to launch a new TV satirical program, and it’s looking for the best talent to take part.
A revamped version of The Establishment Club, originally formed in the 1960s by comedy icon Peter Cook, seeks to “respond to the extraordinary amount of censorship” taking over the country.
The idea is to showcase talent from across the nation, whether they be poets, authors or songwriters, as long as they are “unflinchingly” witty in holding the current state to account.
Just as it gave a platform years ago to renowned satirical character Jonathan Pie, RT UK will now extend that to “nothing but the most cutting and unique takes on the state of the nation.”
In order to find the unique talent, the new Establishment Club team will be taking a double-decker bus up-and-down country in search for those who have a “voice, are angry and passionate.”
The show will be fronted by notorious MC Keith Allen, who is calling on all artists to use their talent to vent their frustration with the government and join the show, saying: “If you want to be heard, let us hear you.”
The Establishment Club will start its scavenging for talent in Bristol on August 9, followed by Brighton, Manchester, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
The best acts from each city will be uploaded to the website each week.
The judges will then choose the top five performers to take part in its new satire TV show to be broadcast every week.
If you are unable to make it to any of the venues, you can still upload your video to the website, as long as it is no longer than four minutes!

Wall Streeters call it “electronification.”
Bustling trading floors, where traders for years elbowed each other out of the way to land a trade, gradually close down. Trading moves to electronic platforms, and new smarter, faster tech-savvy players emerge.
It’s already happened in foreign exchange and the stock market. According to Morgan Stanley and Oliver Wyman, non-bank liquidity providers ― the newer tech-savvy entrants ― now account for 15% to 35% of volumes in spot FX and developed listed equities markets.
“High frequency traders were first, but the new and more threatening class of entrant deploys capital and takes positions to support market making,” the two firms said in a joint report. “Non-banks benefit from lower regulatory costs, but most importantly they rely on market-leading algorithms and data interpretation rather than salespeople and traders to deliver tighter prices in the market.”
Right now, non-banks are most active in the low margin parts of the trading business, with Morgan Stanley and Oliver Wyman estimating that these firms only compete for ~15% of the fee pool.
The question, then, is which market will be the next target of these new players.
Morgan Stanley/Oliver Wyman
The chart above provides a handy guide to the markets where these players might make headway. Morgan Stanley and Oliver Wyman said swaps and bond trading is most likely to come next.
“Some non-banks will look to strike deals with smaller banks to effectively out-source market making,” the report said. “Others will look to rent technology to banks in a more traditional approach. Our analysis suggests that over the next 2-5 years non-banks could take $ 2-3BN of revenues from the Wholesale Banks.”

Vermont senator Bernie Sanders said that he was left “amused” by Donald Trump’s inauguration speech. One part which left him particularly baffled was when Trump attacked the establishment in his speech right in front of the Washington elite.
Speaking to host John Dickerson on CBS’ Face the Nation, when asked if he found some common ground with Trump because of his anti-establishment rhetoric, Sanders said that he actually found it pretty facetious that Donald Trump was criticizing the very same people who have not only funded his campaign, but who now also form a large part of his cabinet picks.
“Well, I found it somewhat amusing that Mr. Trump, President Trump, was punching the establishment, but right behind him, sitting in the VIP section, were billionaire after billionaire after billionaire, some of the most powerful people in this country, who over the last 10, 20 years have become much, much richer while the middle class has shrunk.
The Vermont senator said that it was difficult to take Trump seriously on his anti-establishment rhetoric “when billionaires and large corporations are funding many of your inaugural events.”

It appears Sanders’ observations about the new President are not misplaced. Donald Trump campaigned on the premise that he would “drain the swamp” in Washington, essentially referring to his potential efforts to rid Washington of corporate and moneyed interests. A large part of Trump’s supporter base trusted him with not bowing down to lobbying, considering that he was already king of a vast empire. But it now seems like that some of that faith that working-class Americans placed in Trump was ill-judged.
Donald Trump’s cabinet is full of globalists and industrialists who have more money than one-third of America. Politifact rated a statement which pointed out that 17 of Donald Trump’s cabinet picks had more wealth than one-third of Americans “mostly true,” pointing out that their net worth is in excess of $ 6 billion. That is a dangerously wealthy cabinet which contrasts with Trump’s populist tone during the campaign, in which he had promised to work for the working and middle classes of the American public.

— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) January 22, 2017
Bernie Sanders further noted that if Trump was really serious about working on any of his promises, he would not “throw 20 million working people off of health insurance.” He also argued that the new President wouldn’t cut Medicare and Medicaid if he was not exclusively representing the who’s who of Washington and Wall Street.
“The best thing that Mr. Trump can do right now, today, is to send out a tweet and tell the American people that during the campaign when he said over and over and over again that he would not cut Social Security, cut Medicare, cut Medicaid, tell the American people that he was not lying. That he’s going to keep his word and that they do not have to live in anxiety.”

— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) January 21, 2017
Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders confessed to being very pleased with seeing so many protesters take to the streets one day after the inauguration. He congratulated the women who had taken part in the march, urging America to move forward.
“Congratulations to the women marching around the world today. We will not go back to the days when women had to risk their lives to end a pregnancy. The decision to have an abortion must remain one for a woman, not the government. And we will not go backward to a time before Planned Parenthood, when millions of women had no access to birth control or cancer screenings. We must go forward to ensure full reproductive justice for all women,” Sanders wrote.
