President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa has suggested creating a single currency for Africa which, according to him, could boost trade across borders and match international currencies.
The idea was first mooted by Ramaphosa during a meeting of the African Union in Rwanda, where 44 countries gathered to sign the African Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) treaty.
“The hour, the day, and the moment could have arrived for Africa to have its own currency so that we get out of our heads this colonial mentality of relying on other people’s currency. We can match that currency with others,” Ramaphosa told African leaders.
Currently, there are over 40 different currencies in Africa, with many of them struggling to maintain value. In 2008, Zimbabwe’s national currency soared to a staggering inflation rate of 89 sextillion (a million raised to the power of six) percent.
The CFTA treaty, which was agreed by the heads of state during the meeting, may result in the biggest free-trade area in terms of participating nations since the establishment of the World Trade Organization. The deal is expected to come into effect within six months, and the leaders hope the plan will boost prosperity for 1.2 billion Africans.
It is expected to erase trade barriers such as tariffs and import quotas, providing free movement of goods and services among member states.

Pyongyang must strive for parity of “real force” with Washington on the Korean peninsula so that US leaders “dare not talk about military options,” North Korean leader Kim Jong-un told defense officials during the latest test of IRBM.
“Our final goal is to establish the equilibrium of real force with the US and make the US rulers dare not talk about military option for the DPRK,” Kim said Friday, according to state news agency KCNA.
The North Korean leader also “stressed the need to run at full speed and straight, continuing to qualitatively consolidate the military attack capacity for [a] nuclear counterattack the US cannot cope with.”
“We should clearly show the big power chauvinists how our state attain the goal of completing its nuclear force despite their limitless sanctions and blockade,” he added, KCNA reports.
On Friday morning, North Korea fired another missile which flew over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.
The launch came mere days after the UN Security Council, including China and Russia, agreed on a new round of sanctions which fixed an annual cap of 2 million barrels worth of oil imports into North Korea as well as a ban on the country’s textile exports.
Tensions have been steadily rising on the Korean peninsula over the past few months, with Pyongyang conducting several missile and nuclear tests in defiance of rulings by the UN Security Council, while the United States has continued to carry out joint exercises with South Korea and Japan while amplifying its rhetoric against Pyongyang.
“North Korea best not make any more threats to the US. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen,”President Donald Trump said in August. In response, North Korea said it was “carefully examining” a plan for a missile strike near the US territory of Guam, a Pacific island some 3,400km away from the Korean peninsula.

“This is complete nonsense,” Peskov said on Tuesday after posed with a question by a reporter.
Earlier Monday, the Washington Post reported, citing unnamed US, European and Arab officials, that the UAE in January arranged secret talks between Erik Prince, the founder of notorious private US military firm Blackwater, and “a Russian close to President Vladimir Putin.”
According to the paper, the meeting at the Seychelles was organized to establish a “back-channel line of communication” between the Russian government and the administration of President Trump.
The White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, has rejected the report, calling it “a bunch of flimsy pieces of information all tied together.”
Spicer pointed out that Prince had no role in Trump’s campaign or his transition when the alleged meeting took place on January 11, with this fact not being contested by Washington Post.
The paper “can’t identify the other individuals” except the Blackwater founder, who participated in the talks, he added.
“Apparently, he [Prince] knows somebody, who knew somebody, who knew a guy in the UAE, who also knew a guy in Russia,” Spicer said, describing the article.
He also added that the authorities at the Seychelles said that they have no records of such meeting taking place and even of Prince visiting the islands.
Spicer believes the paper linked the Blackwater founder to the story only due to the fact that his sister, Betsy DeVos, was on the Trump team as Education Secretary.

When the journalist asked the White House spokesman to acknowledge that the Washington Post report may be potentially problematic for the Trump administration, he categorically replied: “No.”
Reports about the alleged “Russia ties” of the Trump administration have been consistently used by Trump’s Democratic Party opponents, who also allege that Russia-backed hackers got into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) email server to influence the election in favor of the Republicans. None of the allegations of Moscow’s involvement in the 2016 US presidential elections or those of Trump having an established connection with Vladimir Putin’s government have so far been backed by evidence.

“Our first contacts with the government of Kiribati were a year and a half ago, now our negotiations are entering the decisive phase,” Bakov told RT by email, referring to the tiny aid-dependent Pacific nation from which he plans to purchase land. “Kiribati needs investment, it has a working democracy and a friendly people. I believe our cooperation will be mutually beneficial.”
No business plan or architectural proposal has been unveiled, but surmising from interviews given by Bakov in recent weeks, he plans to purchase – “not rent,” he tells RT – three uninhabited islands, investing $ 120 million into the treasury of Kiribati in return. Over the next “10 to 15 years” an investment of a further $ 230 million is planned, turning the islands into luxury resorts, with their own “air and sea ports, solar power stations, freshwater plants, hospitals, schools and settlements for the employees.”
“President of Kiribati Taneti Mamau is currently visiting the islands, and we are all waiting for his return,” wrote Bakov, who is himself vacationing in Kiribati.
While the islands may look close to each other on a map, in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean, the nearest of them, Malden Island, is about 700km south of the populated part of Kiribati, and the furthest, Caroline Island, is 1500km away. All three islands are almost entirely barren and dominated by the shrieking of millions of migratory terns, and Malden, the biggest of the three at 40 sq. km, was used by the British as the target to test the hydrogen bomb in 1956. All were inhabited by guano miners and sailors in past centuries, before being abandoned, due to their remoteness and inhospitability.
But then, none of the previous owners planned to designate the atolls as the administrative center of an empire.
“We want to become an internationally recognized state under the rule of Emperor Nicholas III. He will not be a claimant to the throne of the defunct Russian Empire, but the head of the Romanov Empire,” Bakov, who says that he would become the Archchancellor – the head of the government – of the new empire, wrote to RT.
Nicholas III is in actual fact Prince Karl Emich of Leiningen, a bona fide descendant of the Russian royal family, and a disinherited heir, who lost his turn to lead the House of Leinengen when he married a Catholic, Gabriele Renate Homey, who later divorced him and married Aga Khan IV.
The established branches of the House of Romanov, from the closest descendants of the Nicholas II, the last Tsar executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918, have rejected the pretentions of Prince Karl Emich. Informed of the latest plan, a representative for the Romanovs told Moskovsky Komsomolets daily that it was a “circus” perpetuated by a “conman or mentally ill individual” that “discredited the idea of a monarchy.”
While Bakov’s interviews and social media posts provide little evidence of overt insanity, his credentials for the current undertaking do appear somewhat thin.
Bakov, 51, first rose to fame when he formed one of the Soviet Union’s first private travel agencies, prior to its collapse in 1991, and was a one-time part-owner of Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport, now a multi-billion dollar business.
He parlayed his financial success into a political career in his home region of the Urals, running unsuccessfully for mayor and governor several times. He was, however, elected to the State Duma in 2003, and served a four-year term.
He was also the campaign manager for multiple candidates and one of the chief ideologists for the disbanded center-right Union of Right Forces party.
Although always an Orthodox Christian activist, his conversion from secular democracy to religion-based royalism occurred around the turn of the decade, as he proclaimed the new Russian Empire in 2011, and founded the Monarchist Party the year after.
Both entities exist more on paper than in real life, though it is notable that Bakov has attempted to buy other islands in the Pacific, and a part of Montenegro for his would-be state before. He told RT that he was about to travel to the latter, to “negotiate with the new government,” after the previous attempts to establish the Russian Empire on the shores of the Adriatic Sea “ran into political disagreements.”
Even if the royalist aspect of the latest project is disregarded – Kiribati officials have insisted that it is more of a marketing hook and a distraction, and its essence is commercial development – there is little to suggest that Bakov, who has not featured in any recent wealthiest lists, has the financial wherewithal to buy and develop the islands. Of his own capital, he says only that it comes from “buying and selling land,” and he has not named any outside investors.
But despite accusations of running a “smoke-and-mirrors operation” or even “an elaborate practical joke” by the Russian media, Bakov says he is deadly serious – and says the restoration could take place before 2017 is out.
“I am hoping for the return of the Romanov dynasty in the hundredth anniversary year – perhaps even month – of its fall in October 1917,” Bakov told RT.

The members of the radical Salafist organization, the Muslim Brotherhood, which was established in Egypt in 1928, “have long been active in Saxony, although they were stealthy,” Gordian Meyer-Plath, the president of the regional department of the German domestic security and anti-terrorist service, the BfV, told Germany’s MDR broadcaster.
Meyer-Plath warned, however, that “only now, when a [large] number of Muslims have come to Germany, do they see a chance to expand their network beyond some central structures and become interesting for the new Muslims in Saxony.”
While downplaying the threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood in Germany as being “beyond Jihad,” meaning that the group is not actively involved in terrorist attacks, the security official pointed to the threat it poses to democratic society.
“The Muslim Brothers still want to establish Sharia law in Germany,” which would have grave consequences for religious freedom, women’s rights and democratic values, Meyer-Plath said.
The group is active in about 70 countries, where it builds mosques, schools and hospitals, presents itself as a democratic force and officially distances itself from an idea of the global Jihad in an attempt to win the sympathies of locals.
In Saxony, the Salafist group has been actively sponsoring the construction of new mosques. It has already built several mosques and plans construction of more places of worship in such cities as Dresden, Leipzig, Meissen, Riesa, Pirna, Bautzen und Goerlitz.
Meyer-Plath drew attention to the fact that, while western Germany has numerous Muslim associations that offer their services to newly arrived Muslims, the eastern part of the country lacks them. The Muslim Brotherhood “is trying to break into this vacuum and secure a monopolistic position,” he said, adding that the opportunity to spread the group’s influence came with the ongoing refugee and migrant influx from Muslim-majority countries.
“Offering prayers is a religious duty for Muslims. And when there are no [other] mosques in the region, they go to those that exist there,” Meyer-Plath explained, adding that “it is needless to say that it is a bad situation when the only Muslim structures in the area are controlled by Islamists and political extremists.”
The security official believes that the group has vast financial reserves as it does not lack money for sponsoring new construction projects or just buying real estate.
“They are going through the land with a fantastic sum of money and are just buying real property” to turn it into mosques, Meyer-Plath said, adding that the local Muslims often appreciate their efforts.
The official urged citizens to avoid prejudice toward all people who attend mosques established by Salafists. The fact that the mosques are controlled by Islamists “does not mean that people who go there are necessarily being indoctrinated [into and becoming extremists],” the head of the regional BfV department said.
The Muslims that attend such mosques “are often absolutely unaware” of the true nature of these facilities because the Salafist structures are quite “cautious about what they are saying,” Meyer-Plath said. He added, however, that believers often “start sympathizing [with the radicals] and become potential [recruits].”
At the same time, Meyer-Plath stressed that the security services would continue to just monitor the activities of the Brotherhood in Saxony but would not take any active measures against them in line with German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere’s policy of “intense surveillance.”
Meanwhile, an Islamic Cultural Center in Saxony’s capital of Dresden, which is allegedly controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, denied all accusations of radicalism, saying that it supports “non-political Islam.”
The center fully supports democratic values, its spokesman, Muhammed Wellenreuther, told German media. He also said that it welcomes both adherents of “conservative” and “progressive” forms of Islam.
Wellenreuther confirmed that his organization looks for real property for sale, particularly in the rural areas of Saxony, in order to establish Islamic cultural centers and mosques there, as “there is a great demand” for them.
BfV figures show that about 1,000 members of the Muslim Brotherhood are active in Germany, as reported by MDR. They particularly run Islamic centers that are used as venues for political and religious agitation.
More: DxO One update lets you easily slap a watermark on photos before you share them
Watermarks don’t have to look awful, however, assuming you go about implementing them in a subtle manner. Placing a watermark can be a simple or elaborate process, depending on how involved and fancy you want to get. You could use a photo editor and slap some text over it, for example, or overlay a faded icon atop the image in question. Whatever your fancy, here are a few basic ways to add a simple watermark to your photos.
The easiest way to add some form of copyright to your image is to use the text tool in any photo-editing program (heck, even Paint will do the job) and tag your name on it. You can do it discreetly by writing it in a corner, in small font size, or plastering it over the entire photo. Draw a box around it, color it, use a funky font — it’s entirely up to you. This method might not be attractive, but it’s the fastest and easiest way to add a watermark. For a cleaner approach, read on.
You can overlay some text over an image to create a watermark using Microsoft Paint, but we didn’t say it’d be pretty.
Another easy way to watermark a photo is to use an online tool like PicMarkr. Upload up to five photos, or pull them from Flickr or Facebook, and then pick from three watermarking options (text, image, or tiled). Whereas a text watermark is similar to the one previously outlined, an image watermark places another image on top of the original (you’ll need to resize the secondary image beforehand). The issue with using PicMarkr to create an image watermark is that it doesn’t let you choose the opacity of the secondary image, so you can’t blend with the original photo. The third option, a tiled watermark, simply layers a text or image all over the picture.
This method is fast and easy, but it’s not pretty. Another online watermarking tool, PicMark, takes a cleaner approach by creating a watermark frame around an image. Sadly, while the modern approach looks nice, some can still easily copy your image and crop it out of the frame. And, you can’t choose the size of the watermarked image. Watermark.ws, on the other hand, offers the most flexibility in that it lets you drag a text or image watermark anywhere on the photo. The software also lets you adjust the font, color, and image opacity. Of the three mentioned, Watermark.ws gives you the most professional-looking watermark.
Watermarkphotos.net is yet another option for watermarking your photos from directly within your browser. What sets this site apart is that all of the work is done locally, meaning none of your content is transferred to their servers to be watermarked, which adds an extra layer of privacy.
There is watermarking software you can download, which essentially does the same things as the aforementioned online tools. However, because you don’t need an internet connection, you’ll find the process faster and you keep your photos on your local drive. There’s plenty of premium and freemium software on the market that does the same thing, though, each comes with a different set of extras. Check out Alamoon Watermark, which also lets you crop and resize a photo, tweak the image quality, and use a variety of image formats. Alternatives include TSR Watermark and uMark, the latter of which is a premium app that lets you apply graphics and perform batch watermarking. Thankfully, uMark also has a free version with limited functionality.
uMark is a useful downloadable watermark creation software, but you’ll have to pay for extra features (image via uMark).
Before you download new software, however, you may already have something installed on your computer that can create watermarks. IrfanView, a popular image viewer for Windows, has a built-in watermarking feature. Photoshop Elements offers an easy way to create watermarks, too. Regardless, quickly check the image-editing software you’re currently using to see if a watermarking feature is available.
If your photo-editing software doesn’t offer a watermarking feature, you don’t want to download new software, or the online tools are too barebones or inflexible for your creative needs, you can always make your own using an image-editing software such as Photoshop, Gimp, or Pixelmator. How fancy your watermark looks will depend on your is comfort level as a graphic designer, but, for most people, here’s the most basic way to get started.
As we’ve already mentioned, you can simply overlay some text on top of an image with your copyright info, and decrease the opacity of the text between 40 and 60 percent. The watermark should be viewable, yes, but it shouldn’t overwhelm the image (lower the opacity even further if you want it to look nearly invisible). The opacity can be adjusted in the Layers section of Photoshop, but may be found elsewhere in other programs.

The position, size, and color of the text is up to you. If you have pre-made logo — for your business, for example — you can also do the same thing here as you would with text. Simply import or paste the image, and adjust the opacity. You can always experiment with other design features and carry out more complex actions, however, we don’t think you need to complicate things. If you use a program like Photoshop that lets you record an action, we suggest using it as you’re creating your watermark, so you can automate the process for batch images.
When you’re on the go and want to safely share your photo on the web, your best bet is to add watermarks using a smartphone or tablet app. Luckily, there’s no shortage of apps to work with, whether you’re an Android or iOS user.
One of the most versatile mobile watermarking solutions is an app called iWatermark. Available for both Android and iOS, the app lets you choose any photo from your library and add a watermark with just a few taps. You can go with something as simple as your name and the copyright logo, or overlay a custom logo of your own creation. The iWatermark app isn’t the most intuitive, but it gets the job done and offers batch options for those times when you need to watermark a dozen photos at once.

If you’re already invested in Adobe’s Creative Cloud platform, one of the best options for watermarking on a mobile device is to use one of Adobe’s mobile apps. Adobe Photoshop Mix (Android, iOS) provides a simple solution, as the app allows you to add multiple layers to an image and tweak each one independently. But, if you’re looking for something with a little more flair, you could use Adobe’s Spark Post app, which allows you to animate your logo. The only problem with Spark Post is that it’s currently limited to iOS Devices.
Adobe Spark is made more for text overlays and clever quotes, but it can also serve as a great watermarking tool.
While we’re on iOS-specific solutions, one of the most intriguing options available is a productivity app called Workflow. Designed for only the most dedicated of power users, Workflow is an app that helps you automate an incredible amount of functions across the entire iOS ecosystem. In a recent update, the Workflow team even added the ability to automatically watermark photos from directly within the app.
This might not be the best solution if you’re only wanting to watermark one or two photos, but if you’re dealing with an entire album, you could create (or download) a workflow that automatically watermarks an entire collection of photos. What sets this app apart from others is that you can further automate the process so that all photos are automatically uploaded to Flickr, Dropbox, Facebook, or a slew of other social networks. This cuts yet another step from the post-production process.
