Then-US President Donald Trump arrives with then- Vice President Mike Pence for a Make America Great Again rally at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan on November 2, 2020.

  • Liz Cheney in a searing Monday speech skewered Trump and members of the Republican Party.
  • Cheney suggested that Mike Pence was "essentially" the acting president on January 6, 2021.
  • "White House staff knew it, and so did every Republican and Democratic leader in Washington," she said.

GOP Rep. Liz Cheney delivered a searing indictment of former President Donald Trump and members of the Republican Party on Monday in one of her first speeches since her primary defeat last month.

Cheney this week gave the Walter Berns Constitution Day lecture at AEI, a center-right economic think tank in Washington DC, warning that America's freedom is in a perilous position and urging the country to hold Trump accountable for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Cheney, as the top Republican on the House Select Committee investigating the insurrection, has long been one of the few outspoken GOP critics of Trump — a stance that ultimately cost her her congressional seat after Trump spent months propping up her Republican challenger.

But Cheney on Monday did not dwell on her political woes, opting instead to further rebuke Trump's actions, or lack thereof, on January 6, 2021.

"I hope you all heard the testimony in our select committee hearings of Pat Cipollone, corroborated by Cassidy Hutchinson and others on President Trump's White House staff," she said. "Testimony that President Trump was the only person who refused to respond to desperate calls for help, even from his own congressional allies. He refused to come to their aid."

Several witnesses, including Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the committee that they were puzzled by Trump's inaction as rioters stormed the US capitol on January 6.

In her speech on Monday, Cheney suggested that Trump's second-in-command, Mike Pence, stepped into his superior's role.

"If you watched our hearings closely, you understand that Vice President Mike Pence was essentially the president for most of that day," she said. "White House staff knew it, and so did every other Republican and Democratic leader in Washington."

After Trump assailed Pence on Twitter for refusing to reject Electoral College votes for President Joe Biden, rioters throughout the Capitol began chanting "hang Mike Pence." Hutchinson testified earlier this summer that Trump defended the insurrectionists' call for violence, saying that "Mike deserves it."

In his recent autobiography,  "So Help Me God," Pence wrote that he was not afraid, during the events of January 6, but angry.

"I was angry at what I saw, how it desecrated the seat of our democracy and dishonored the patriotism of millions of our supporters, who would never do such a thing here or anywhere else," Pence wrote.

According to "The Divider," a new book by Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker, Trump has said he would not pick Pence to be his running mate if he launches a 2024 campaign.

"It would be totally inappropriate" to pick Pence as his running mate, Trump said, according to the book. "Mike committed political suicide," the former told Glasser and Baker.

In her speech, Cheney also urged people to rewatch testimony from the committee's summer hearings and listen to what several of Trump's former officials said about the then-president's post-2020 actions while under oath.

"How could Trump's refusal to act, his betrayal or our Republic, of our Constitution, of our principles, come with no cost?" she said.

The $ 4050 that Acura cut from the asking price of its 2018 RLX Sport Hybrid is the most significant change the brand has made to its refreshed all-wheel-drive sedan. Introduced as a 2014 model, the largest Acura sedan receives changes aimed at making it more competitive with other premium mid-size players such as the Mercedes-Benz E-class, the Audi A6, and the BMW 5-series. Two RLX models are available, the Sport Hybrid, which we drove in Southern California’s Santa Monica Mountains, and the front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-steering P-AWS model. READ MORE ››

World’s Largest Movie Theater Chain Essentially Admits to Not Caring About Theatrical Presentation https://briefnews.eu/worlds-largest-movie-theater-chain-essentially-admits-to-not-caring-about-theatrical-presentation/ https://briefnews.eu/worlds-largest-movie-theater-chain-essentially-admits-to-not-caring-about-theatrical-presentation/#respond Mon, 06 Nov 2017 23:49:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/worlds-largest-movie-theater-chain-essentially-admits-to-not-caring-about-theatrical-presentation/ theatrical presentation

(Welcome to The Soapbox, the space where we get personal, political, and opinionated about anything and everything. In this edition: AMC Theaters admits that they don’t care about masking, and why this is bad.)

We’re aware there are terrible things happening in our country right now, and yes, complaining about movie theater screens is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. But damn it, instead of getting overwhelmed by those things, cinephiles occasionally want to lose ourselves in a terrific theatrical experience. And when the world’s largest theater chain has basically admitted that they no longer care about the way their movies are presented to audiences, that’s worth grumbling about.

Chances are pretty high that when you go see a movie, you see it in an AMC Theater. That company has the largest market share of American theaters and is the biggest movie theater chain on the planet. You may assume that because of this lofty position of power they hold in the industry, AMC might want to set a good example by exhibiting movies in the best possible quality in an attempt to lure more customers; after all, attendance is declining and while theaters make the majority of their money in concessions, humans are still a necessary component of their business model.

But as you may have gleaned from this article’s headline, that’s not the case.

Filmmaker Mike Williamson took a photo calling out AMC’s lack of masking in one of their theaters, and instead of the chain seeing that complaint and ensuring their paying customer that they’d work to correct the problem, they essentially admitted that they simply no longer care about the way their movies are exhibited.

For those who don’t know anything about masking, I recommend reading this ScreenCrush article from last year. Here’s the gist: masking is the process of expanding or shrinking the borders of a screen to allow a film to fill the entire screen. Movies are most filmed in one of two different aspect ratios (“full” or “scope”), and most theaters are equipped to present either on any given screen, traditionally using motorized curtains to completely surround the image. This is a key part of the presentation because it allows the audience to have a much more immersive experience. Lately, though, some theaters haven’t been bothering to mask their movies as often, resulting in experiences like Mike Williamson’s, in which distracting gray bars are visible throughout the entire movie.

As Williamson pointed out in a subsequent tweet, letterboxing in a theater gives the appearance that you’re watching something on a television screen at home – and with the rise of digital projection, complaints about movies looking like TV have been flying around for years already. This certainly isn’t going to help, and for AMC to cop to their lack of masking and try to hide behind the “clean lines and edges” of their digital projectors is embarrassing. Are they actively trying to drive consumers away at this point?

How can a company acknowledge something that looks like complete garbage, nod and smile, openly state that they’re making it look like that on purpose, and then charge you a premium price for your ticket? Unless there’s a big enough uproar about this that AMC reverse this policy, audiences have lost yet another battle in the ongoing war of simply trying to have a high quality theatrical experience. When the world’s largest theater chain is so open about their disdain for presentation, it’s no wonder people aren’t going to the movies as much anymore.

Me, Myself & I Essentially Cancelled at CBS; Man With a Plan Called Off Bench https://briefnews.eu/me-myself-i-essentially-cancelled-at-cbs-man-with-a-plan-called-off-bench/ https://briefnews.eu/me-myself-i-essentially-cancelled-at-cbs-man-with-a-plan-called-off-bench/#respond Wed, 01 Nov 2017 17:21:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/me-myself-i-essentially-cancelled-at-cbs-man-with-a-plan-called-off-bench/ Me, Myself & bye.

CBS is pulling rookie sitcom Me, Myself & I off the air after six low-rated episodes, TVLine has learned. The new Monday entry starring Bobby Moynihan, John Larroquette and Jack Dylan Grazer premiered in September to 7.5 million total viewers and a 1.6 demo rating, but at last tally delivered under 4 mil and a 0.7 — placing last for the night among CBS’ new Monday sitcom block.

According to CBS, Me, Myself & I “will return to the schedule at a later date.” (The series will remain in production, fulfilling its initial 13-episode order.)

Freshman comedy 9JKL shifts to 9:30 pm on Nov. 6, replacing Me Myself & I. A Big Bang encore will air at 8:30 that night in its place. Then beginning Nov. 13, Man With a Plan will come off the bench and kick off its second season in the now-vacant 8:30 time slot.

Here’s how CBS’ revised Monday schedule will look as of Nov. 13:

8 pm Kevin Can Wait
8:30 pm Man With a Plan
9 pm Superior Donuts
9:30 9JKL
10 pm Scorpion

Still Star-Crossed Essentially Cancelled as ABC Banishes Drama to Saturdays https://briefnews.eu/still-star-crossed-essentially-cancelled-as-abc-banishes-drama-to-saturdays/ https://briefnews.eu/still-star-crossed-essentially-cancelled-as-abc-banishes-drama-to-saturdays/#respond Thu, 22 Jun 2017 23:08:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/still-star-crossed-essentially-cancelled-as-abc-banishes-drama-to-saturdays/

The sky is falling for Still Star-Crossed: ABC is shipping the Shondaland period drama off to Saturday nights… which means it’s as good as cancelled.

Star-Crossed will make the move to Saturdays starting July 8, according to our sister site Deadline, after airing just three episodes in the post-Bachelorette slot on Monday nights. A sequel to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Star-Crossed stars Lashana Lynch as Rosaline Capulet and Wade Briggs as Benvolio Montague, who are being forced to marry each other to defuse the raging feud between their families.

With Shonda Rhimes on board as executive producer, Star-Crosseddebuted last month to 2.3 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating, and has eroded in consecutive weeks, most recently posting 1.6 mil and a 0.3 — a far cry from the 2.6 mil/0.6 that Mistresses averaged leading out of The Bachelorette last summer.

What’s more, the cast’s contracts are set to expire next week, which makes this scheduling move a clear sign there won’t be a Season 2. Star-Crossed was originally announced by ABC back in May 2016.

Trump ‘essentially declared war’ by firing James Comey, but the worst may be yet to come https://briefnews.eu/trump-essentially-declared-war-by-firing-james-comey-but-the-worst-may-be-yet-to-come/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-essentially-declared-war-by-firing-james-comey-but-the-worst-may-be-yet-to-come/#respond Thu, 11 May 2017 08:09:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-essentially-declared-war-by-firing-james-comey-but-the-worst-may-be-yet-to-come/ Donald TrumpChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

The fallout from FBI director James Comey’s dismissal appears to be just getting started.

Multiple news outlets on Wednesday night began detailing the months, weeks, and days leading up to President Donald Trump’s bombshell decision to kick Comey out of the bureau. The action has already produced shockwaves worldwide but, as told by a number of US officials, the worst may be yet to come.

Reaction from Justice Department and FBI officials ranged from “raw anger” to fear, according to The Washington Post. Trump “essentially declared war on a lot of people at the FBI,” said one official cited by the newspaper.

“I think there will be a concerted effort to respond over time in kind,” the unnamed official said. It was not immediately clear what that official was implying.

Amid the White House’s conflicting narratives in the immediate aftermath of Comey’s firing, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was said to have threatened to resign, The Post said, citing an unnamed source close to the White House, after Rosenstein was painted as the “prime mover” of the decision to get rid of Comey.

The narrative emerging from sources cited by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Post on Wednesday described Trump as having grown increasingly angry with Comey, who was the most visible US official in ongoing investigations of potential collusion between Trump associates and Russia.

“To a president obsessed with loyalty, Mr. Comey was a rogue operator who could not be trusted as the FBI investigated Russian ties to Mr. Trump’s campaign,” The Times reported.

Comey gave explosive testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, offering broad themes of some of the FBI’s work in the Trump-Russia investigation. During that testimony, Comey also said that it made him “mildly nauseous” knowing that his handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe last year may have had an impact on the US presidential election.

That admission, The Times said, set Trump off: “Mr. Trump burned as he watched, convinced that Mr. Comey was grandstanding.” The president reportedly took Comey’s remark as a slight against his November electoral victory.

The Russia probe has remained a thorn in Trump’s side. The president has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing — at points chastising lawmakers and the US intelligence community’s work on the matter.

Multiple people have been entangled in the Russia investigation, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was subpoenaed by the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday.

Carter Page, once a Trump foreign-policy adviser, is also among the persons of interest, as well as former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who during his confirmation hearings failed to disclose campaign-trail meetings he had with a Russian ambassador, has recused himself from Russia-related investigative matters.

In his dismissal letter to Comey on Tuesday night, Trump claimed that Comey informed him, “on three separate occassions,” that he was not under investigation, but according to Comey associates cited by The Wall Street Journal, that assertion was inaccurate.

“They said Mr. Comey never gave Mr. Trump any such guidance, which would violate longstanding policies on criminal investigations.”

“That is literally farcical,” one associate said of Trump’s assertion.

The accounts were given as the Justice Department interviewed five candidates to take over as interim FBI director on Wednesday. Current acting director Andrew McCabe was among the them, in addition to FBI managers from Chicago and Virginia The Journal reported.

A permanent replacement will require Senate confirmation, a process that may be fraught with conflict in a deeply divided chamber.
