Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 got real in the promo released Thursday ahead of the sister series’ November 12 premieres. The clip, you see, doesn’t just feature the ABC shows’ fictional life savers, it also shines a spotlight on actual essential workers from across the US. “We all have heroes,” begins Grey’s leading lady Ellen Pompeo’s voiceover, “people we aspire to be… the ones who fight… who help us to survive… “When it matters, the ones who always show up to save the day,” she concludes. “Thank you.” It’s not just the video that’s paying tribute to essential workers, either; Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy and Season 4 of Station 19 — which are kicking off with a two-hour crossover event — are also being produced in their honor. “This season, our work is dedicated to the healthcare workers who put their lives on the line every day to try to save ours,” explains Krista Vernoff, showrunner for both dramas. “Wear a mask, save someone else’s life.” In an Instagram post, Pompeo added that “since we shut down filming [in March], 7,000 healthcare workers have died from Covid. I dedicate my Season 17 to all who have fallen and to every one of you who by the grace of God is still standing… “This season is for you with humility and a bit of humor to get us through,” she continued, “and endless amounts of gratitude. I hope we do you proud.” Previously, Vernoff told TVLine that the pandemic would play into both series. It’s “a whole new world for our hospital and for all of our characters.” Regardless, she promised that at least Station 19 was moving into a lighter season than its previous one. “The team pulls together and finds a lot of joy despite the heaviness of the world.” Press PLAY on the video above to check it out. Then hit the comments with your hopes for Season 17 of Grey’s and Season 4 of Station 19.

The Newton Mail subscription service might be dead, but its owner just found an unusual lifeline. Essential has acquired Newton developer CloudMagic for an unspecified amount. The phone maker didn’t say just what it would do with its new purchase, but said it was constantly searching for companies that could “accelerate [its] product roadmap.” Terms of the deal aren’t public.
This doesn’t necessarily herald the revival of Newton Mail. While it had clever features (such as resurfacing unanswered emails and recalling sent messages), it had roughly 40,000 paid subscribers — and some of its features were available for free through competitors like Google’s Gmail. However, it does hint that Essential might be looking for more ways for its devices to stand out. The Essential Phone had eye-catching industrial design, but its only distinguishing software feature was a camera app that was widely regarded as sub-par. This might give it email features that you don’t always see out of the box, such as emailing people on your behalf.
Essential is making the acquisition at a difficult time. Although the company is starting to hint at plans for a new phone, it has largely been quiet since releasing its first handset in 2017. Sales haven’t been stellar, and the company recently laid off nearly a third of its workforce. Moreover, it’s still dealing with accusations of sexual misconduct against its founder Andy Rubin. The firm is clearly betting that investments now will help it provide more compelling products and convince the public to focus on its future, rather than its troubled past.

You might know some of them, but there are certainly some hidden gems that you wouldn’t have heard of before. Once you start using them, you will notice how easy navigating and operating on windows has become.
If you think I have missed out your favorite ones, do hit me up in the comments section.
In case you haven’t known these, let’s start with the most basic shortcuts first.
Irrespective of what you are doing, or where you are doing Ctrl + Z is a lifesaver. One possibly can’t survive without this function.
Whatever program you’re running – this function helps you get back to your last input. So don’t worry about all the mistakes. P.S. not all function keys wear capes.
Again, irrespective of which program you are running, this shortcut key selects all the text, files or folders or elements in the program depending on what you are using.
No need to drag the mouse everywhere now. It is useful more than you actually think.
You’ve selected what you wanted to. Now what? You’d like to copy it of course.
This is probably one of the top shortcut key people would use when working on their windows system. Easily copy whatever you like and it stays with you until you are ready to paste it where you like.
Paste easily all that you have copied. It could be text, file, image or folder. A very useful feature to bring every thing together.
If you would like to paste plain simple text, without original formatting just add Shift to it. i.e. Ctrl + Shift + V.
Don’t want a piece of text/table/image/file at the particular place?
Simply select it and use the shortcut Ctrl + X. The piece gets removed and copied. Then simply use the paste shortcut to paste it anywhere you like.
This one has been around for a while and has been enhanced with upgrades in the windows OS. Simple press Alt and then the Tab key and you will switch to the next tab/screen.
While holding on to the Alt button and tapping on Tab let’s you choose between multiple screens. Talk about multi-tasking!
What happens when an application starts to lag or stops responding or just your windows OS stands still and you can’t move a thing. You summon Ctrl + Alt + Del. When you press them together a magical box called task manager opens up.
You can then check out which programs/apps were making your pc slow and shut them down from the task manager itself. Bringing your PC back to life!
This shortcut has been around for decades now! Simply press alt plus the function F4 key and you will see the application that you are on closes.
However, it is smart enough to ask you to save your work before it shuts down. It also works almost on anything right from your browser to games and custom applications.
Typed in something that you cannot find? Or simply you are looking for a particular keyword on a document or a browser? Ctrl + F is the handy shortcut that will open a quick bar where you can type in the keyword and it will show you all the results in the document matching that keyword.
You not only want to find some keywords, but also replace them? Not a problem at all. The Ctrl + H shortcut comes in handy.
Just hit the keys and a box will open. You can simply type in the word that you need to find and replace. Works for most document types.
Whether you are in your file explorer or browser, pressing Ctrl+E will select your search/navigation bar and you can directly start typing into it. Just go ahead and try it now!
Pressing Ctrl+N together will open up a new file or a window depending if you are working on your browser or offline. This window keyboard shortcut works well with most offline application and online browsers made for windows.
Text too small? Want to see the details more clearly? Perhaps, viewing an infographic that requires zooming in? This shortcut provides exactly that.
If you are on your this command will make your files and folders appear larger and if you are on your browser, it will simply zoom in to the page. Talk about attention to detail!
The above round up the basic keys that you ought to be using while operating windows. Most of them work on browsers or any other custom software you might be using.
Stepping away, but don’t want to shut down or put your system to sleep? Win + L is a great shortcut. It helps you lock down your screen and unless you re-enter your password nobody can open it. (Assuming you have a password set for your system)
It is actually a quick minimize option. No matter how many tabs/windows are open, this shortcut quickly minimizes all of them and shows you the desktop and allows you to access files/application in a couple of clicks.
Very close to what Alt + Tab does but it is a more advanced level windows app navigator. When you press it you will see tiles of all the open programs and most used programs.
You can scroll or jump between them by additionally pressing the shift key with the Win + Tab command.
Fan of Voice? Use Cortana extensively? You can simply summon her by using the Win + C shortcut and then ask away what you need to know.
While Prtscn allows you to take a screenshot, pressing the windows button along side allows you to automatically save the screenshot. There is a folder named screenshot in your pictures destination, where PNG files of the screenshot will get saved. No need to add another screenshot tool!
Need to quickly open the settings tab? Now, you don’t need to browse through 3-4 destinations to reach the settings tab. Just hit Win + I and you can open up the settings menu for windows.
You will always have that file or application that you can’t find on your PC. For this, windows introduced the search bar.
You can easily open it up by pressing Win + S and type in the file name you want to look up. Additionally, since Cortana is integrated with search, you can use it to ask additional questions as well.
Depending on the hardware manufacturer, F2 keys perform various tasks like, volume up/down, turn wifi off/on. However, using the Fn + F2 you can quickly use the Rename file option when a file/folder is selected. Say good bye to the right click.
Your PC stuck is stuck and the processor can’t keep up? Refresh is a good old method to get things moving. Pressing Fn + F5 can refresh windows or if you are working on your browser, it can refresh that too.
Did you know that windows had a hidden menu! Press Win + X and see it pop-up. It will give you access to all the essential areas of the system.
If you have configure notifications and alerts on your systems, this shortcut will help you easily toggle through all of them. Extremely useful for people who are loaded with notifications.
You’re working and a notification pops up that needs your attention. Well just use Win + Ctrl + B and the explorer will switch to the application that sent you the notification. Swift.
You might be excited to start using all of them right away. While I advise you to try them all out, it entirely depends on how you engage with your system and what work you do on it. (But honestly you will be using a handful of them.)
Carefully select 7-10 shortcuts from the list apart from the ones that you already use and make the keyboard work for you.
]]>You know what you want and you’re interested in hearing exactly how you can bring your dreams to fruition.
Your primary problem is time and the demands of everyday life. For every person who delays their journey to success, there are bills to pay. Your invention goes uninvented, your book remains unwritten, because you have to pay the bills right here and now. Once you’re done working, it’s hard finding motivation to work more on your dream; you’re tired and you just don’t feel like it.
Now’s your time to change. There is no key to success — there are multiple keys to multiple doors, multiple steps, each one leading to the next:
Wait, isn’t accomplishing goals all about personal motivation? How will you succeed if you’re not motivated?
Here’s the problem with motivation:
It’s subject to whims and feelings. If the only thing motivating you is an internal desire to achieve results, you won’t achieve results when desire is not there. Then, there will be times when your desire is strong, but you’re caught up in some other task. You can’t drop that task because if you do, you don’t get paid.
Aytekin Tank, founder of JotForm, recommends relying on “systems” instead of intrinsic motivation.((Aytekin Tank: “There’s No Such Thing As Motivation”)) Intrinsic motivation is self-motivation to take action, and Tank points out that “there are probably moments when you don’t want to take action.”
Instead of merely relying on desire, set up a system and follow it no matter how you feel. Here’s a quick synopsis of how Tank runs his system:
For many of us, the hard part is saying “no” to those inevitable and attractive distractions. Tank recommends concentrating on what you love about your dream. Why are you doing this to begin with? Practice concentrating on what makes your goals great.
Not learning from successful people is the same as ignoring directions from locals in a city you’re visiting for the first time. It makes no sense.
Regardless of how adventurous you are and how much of a rebel you want to be, you must have mentors. Learn how they did it, start basic, and then find ways to differentiate yourself.
According to Ohio University, some of the most successful self-made business people share common traits including:((Ohio University: “Self-Made Business People — How They Did It”))
If you’re having trouble deciding who to emulate, the above traits are good ones to cultivate.
Eventually, the more you observe and talk to successful people, the more likely you are to find a mentor or role model.
Look for the traits that make them great, and work on cultivating these in yourself.
There’s no doubt you need other people to help you succeed. No one — and no one’s great idea — exists in a vacuum. That said, there’s a right way to build your network.
If you approach networking the wrong way, you’ll walk away frustrated, even hurt. Never underestimate the emotional gamble you’re undertaking when building a network.
Sounds daunting, but effective networking is easier when you have a set of guidelines. Rutgers University has a number of networking tips to consider:((Rutgers University: “5 Networking Tips for Business Professionals”))
Networking is its own journey and each step is just as important as the destination.
Be mindful of the moments, pay attention to what people say and do, and build relationships with the people who are passionate and full of purpose.
You know you need to practice to excel at anything — your teachers, parents, and coaches drove this into you while you were growing up. But chances are they didn’t give you an accurate picture of right practice.
After all, this is a discussion on how to actually achieve your dreams. Your dream isn’t to be mediocre or proficient, your dream is to really nail something to the wall with excellence, finality and precision.
Don’t just practice. Practice doing it the right way and practice it that way again and again.
In Doug Lemov’s book Practice Perfect (co-authored with Erica Woolway and Katie Yezzi), the author points out it’s not just about practicing a lot — it’s about how you practice. He provides some valuable tips on training yourself to succeed:((Doug Lemov, Erica Woolway, Katie Yezzi: Practice Perfect))
To practice perfection, it helps a great deal to have someone providing feedback. If you don’t have a mentor or coach, consult the information readily available in libraries and online.
If you expect to do nothing but succeed, you’ll be sorely disappointed.
Anything worth doing is difficult, and failure is a part of the process — an important part. Failure grants you valuable insight on what not to do.
Even if you can’t figure out what you did wrong, there are probably external/environmental factors that contributed to your failure.
Now’s your chance to analyze what those factors might be. Once you fail, you’ll analyze these things:
Analysis and learning aren’t necessarily easy, which is why you should be prepared to fail multiple times.
As step 4 says, optimize your practice. Failure will become less frequent the more you practice each part of your process with the correct method in mind.
Realistic goals and objectives are the checkpoints you can meet on your way to success. If your goal is to be a rock star or a celebrity, that’s not something you can immediately realize. It’s a dream.
Without realistic goals that bring you ever closer to your dream, it won’t become reality.
A study published in ScienceDirect found that people experience higher levels of depression and anxiety due to goal conflicts and ambivalence about goals.((Personality and Individual Differences: “Goal conflict, ambivalence and psychological distress: Concurrent and longitudinal relationships”))
In other words, you might have a dream of success, but your immediate goals may conflict with each other, and when that happens, your mental health suffers.
Additionally, you may be ambivalent about your current goals because they don’t align with what you truly value. Evaluate your goals and ask yourself what you truly want out of life. Are your goals in line with what you truly want?
You could be facing an issue that blurs your vision, in which case your dreams and the steps to success fade into the background as you continually confront your immediate issue.
About 18 percent of people suffer from anxiety disorders at some point in their life, yet only 37 percent of sufferers seek help.((Fiscal Tiger: “Dealing With Anxiety at Work: Tips, Resources, and Coping Strategies”))
Anxiety and other common disorders, such as depression, can affect your ability to perform at work, and can hurt your home-life. In turn, your focus fails as your disorder looms in the foreground.
Oftentimes, those who suffer from anxiety are thinking about the future too much. The path to achieving your dreams will not open until you focus on your immediate goals and objectives. Set out immediate steps — e.g. I will write 500 hundred words a day from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. — and concentrate on the action in front of you.
Additionally, consider mindfulness meditation to help alleviate anxiety.
Distractions are a big part of goal conflict. Strangely enough, you find yourself scrolling your Facebook news feed when you’re at work. You decide to go drinking when there’s an important conference the next morning.
Sadly, Facebook and drinking have nothing to do with advancing your career — but improving your work has everything to do with your dream.
Eliminating distractions can be as simple as loading a productivity app on your phone or tablet. Or, you may need to physically remove distractions from your workspace — whatever it takes to concentrate.
You need to eliminate distractions while you’re focusing on objectives, but you also need to give yourself time to refresh.
The best type of downtime helps rejuvenate your brain. Take walks in nature, play a game with friends, exercise, read a book — anything you enjoy doing that’s not unhealthy for you.
When you’re working on objectives, that’s all you’re doing. When you’re networking, that’s all you’re doing. When you’re taking time to relax, you’re not responding to work emails.
Compartmentalization enables you achieve maximum focus and heightens your passion.
The binding thread of these steps to success — the single factor that brings your dreams to fruition — is focus.
Determine simple objectives that will bring you closer and closer to what seems like a fantastic dream. As you work on each objective, practice complete focus.
You’re practicing for those moments that pop up, seemingly by chance, the moments that bring you to the doorstep of your dream.
Repetition is the key to focus. Practice building your skills the right way, listen to advice from others, build in mechanisms to make yourself work, and build your network. Each small step will eventually add up to something huge.
]]>I love unwinding at night in my room, and there’s no better way to set the mood than with a diffuser. Pop in your favorite essential oil and within minutes you’re enveloped by a soothing scent almost as comforting as your coziest throw. While there’s no medical evidence that aromatherapy can cure any diseases, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say it improves your general happiness and well-being.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

It’s Amazon Prime Day, and that means a large collection of deals that may or may not be a great value. We have a big post covering much of the tech stuff, but I wanted to highlight this insane Essential Phone deal that lets you have a 2017 flagship smartphone for $ 250. Less than a year ago, this phone was $ 700. A comparable Snapdragon 835 phone from Samsung (the Galaxy S8) is $ 500. Today, you can buy two Essential Phones for the cost of the Galaxy S8.
We found the Essential Phone to be a very interesting product when we reviewed it last year. It had a new-age notched display, a minimal design, a unique ceramic body, and felt really well made, especially for something from a brand-new company. It ran stock Android and came with a promise of two years of software updates.
