After putting in more than 60 hours of research, we enlisted a former barista, aided by Stumptown Coffee’s education crew, to test five espresso machines, four grinders, and a dozen accessories to find the best beginner’s espresso setup for less than $ 1,000. We recommend starting with the Breville Infuser espresso machine, because it makes pulling consistently great-tasting espresso shots easier and more approachable than the other machines we tested. It also comes with all of the accessories you need to get started.
This guide is for someone who likes good coffee and wants to take the time to learn more about the craft. Whether you’ve been making pour-over for years or simply enjoy going to your local coffee shop and learning different espresso tasting notes, our picks will give you a relatively affordable start in the world of espresso making.
i
To figure out just what was needed to make a cost-effective home espresso setup, we started by consulting eight coffee experts, ranging from baristas to roasters to industry entrepreneurs, and reading hundreds of articles, blog posts, and forums.
According to the experts, a semiautomatic, single-boiler machine is the way to go. The best espresso is made by forcing 195 ºF water through finely ground beans with about 10 bars of pressure. A semiautomatic machine heats the water precisely and uses a pump to create the right amount of pressure every time.
Single-boiler espresso machines use only one boiler for both the water for the espresso shot and the steam wand. This means they require some down time between pulling a shot and steaming milk, but they’re significantly less expensive than their double-boiler cousins.
We tested four machines from the perspective of someone unboxing and trying to get familiar for the first time. Each machine had at least an hour to wow us with its setup process, documentation, and ability to create consistently good espresso without too much tinkering. We scrutinized each machine’s portafilter, and used the steam wand to make a cappuccino. We also tested grinders, which are just as important to making good espresso as the machine itself, along with a range of accessories. To learn more about our testing process, please see our full guide to espresso gear.

The Breville Infuser was the best out of all the machines because of its superior performance for both espresso and milk steaming, ease of use, and the fact that it comes with all the accessories needed to get started. It made a consistently flavorful shot of espresso, and it was very easy to set up and use. The experts we consulted were even impressed with how easy it was to pull a decent shot with the Breville—high praise from a group of people experienced with $ 1,000+ machines!
Using the Infuser is a breeze, even if you’ve never touched an espresso machine before. It comes with a straightforward “how to get started making espresso” sheet, a removable water reservoir, preset options for single and double shots, and a manual mode for precision control. Although it didn’t make the absolute tastiest shot of espresso we tried, our testers were impressed with its consistency and pleasant mouthfeel. Every shot we pulled had a good amount of crema on top, as you’d expect from a high-end cafe. And the Breville’s steam wand was by far the best tested, though it does take a bit of time to heat up fully.

Buying a good grinder is just as important as buying a good espresso machine. If the coffee beans aren’t ground to consistent and uniformly sized particles, it doesn’t matter how good the machine is — the coffee will taste bad. Finding a machine that can accurately produce fine espresso grinds is difficult, and even the picks in our drip coffee grinders guide aren’t nuanced enough for a proper grind. You need a rig with burrs that are specially made to pulverize the coffee to a very fine grind of the exact right size, like the Rancilio Rocky, though acquiring such a grinder comes with a steep price tag.
In our tests, the Rocky was great at grinding beans consistently and was easy to adjust. To change the size of your grind from espresso to French press and back again, you simply move a knob on the hopper from left to right. We also liked that the grinder was relatively quiet compared with many of the others we tested.
Knock box
A knock box is basically a small countertop trash can with a bar going across the top for you to hit your portafilter against to eject used grounds. We tested several competing designs and thought the Cafelat was the best. It has a sleek design with a removable bar for easy cleaning, and very few seams for gunk to collect in.
Cups
The real joy of espresso is in the drinking. Personally, I enjoy drinking espresso out of glass because it looks nice and feels modern. The Duralex Picardie—our top pick for drinking glasses—comes in a 3.1-ounce glass that’s perfect for espresso sipping, macchiatos, and cortados.
Tamper
When it comes to tamping your espresso, consistency is key. Thus, it’s helpful to own a tamper that you like. We found Rattleware’s tampers felt good in the hand and had a nice weight, though they’re a bit on the expensive side.
Frothing pitcher for lattes
If you want to make milk drinks, you’re going to need a frothing pitcher. Many look alike, but some are nicer than others. We prefer Rattleware’s pitchers, which are a bit sturdier and have a better finish than other models, but it really comes down to your personal preferences.

]]>The Espressotoria Caprista machine is not the only easy-to-use coffee capsule home espresso maker on the market. Truth be told, it’s not even the first capsule-based home espresso system I’ve owned. But it is the best DIY espresso maker I have yet come across, and I’ll give you three reasons why:
First — and these aren’t necessarily in order of importance; that’s a subjective call I’ll leave to you — the Caprista machine costs only $ 99, which is dozens of dollars cheaper than many comparable systems. Second, using the Espressotoria Caprista is laughably simple; wait until you see the step-by-step instructions below. And third, it makes damn good coffee.
First, let’s take that whole price thing out a bit farther. At $ 99, the Caprista system, which occupies about a third of a square foot of countertop space and comes in black or white, is a good deal less expensive than many similar coffee systems. And thus far, my experience with it proves the machine comparable in quality to systems that cost a good deal more. Now, let’s say you typically order a double espresso on your way to work, which we’ll say costs $ 2 for the sake of argument. If you have a cup of espresso every single day of the year, that’s $ 730. Except on leap years, when it’s $ 732.
At $ 0.83 per Espressotoria coffee capsule, you could be enjoying the same daily serving of espresso for only $ 303 when you make it yourself. That’s a savings of $ 429. And even if you factor in the $ 99 price of the system, it’s still a $ 330 annual savings.
Now let’s talk about how to use the Espressotoria Caprista system. First, you fill the detachable reservoir with water. Then, you switch the system on. Next, drop a coffee capsule into the chamber on top of the system. When the two buttons on top of the machine stop flashing, indicating that it is preheated, you push either the Short (smaller, more concentrated serving) or Long (larger, less intense serving) button and… that’s it. To sum that up: You fill it up, turn it on, put in a pod, push a button, and then drink espresso. Cleaning the system? Well, that’s where things get complicated. Except not: Just follow all the steps above except don’t put a coffee capsule in there, thus running some hot water through the Caprista.
As to why the coffee the Caprista makes tastes so good, first there’s the selection of coffees available. Full disclosure, I have yet to try all of these, so there’s a chance the Latte and Decaf capsules taste like old socks. But I’m going to go out on a limb here and say… they don’t. The other flavor varieties available are Brazilian Breakfast Blend, Colombian Single Origin, Espresso, and Organic. Great coffee selection alone is one thing; it’s the 19 bar pressure pump the system uses to extract every little bit of flavor from those coffees (and all the caffeine, too) that makes the Caprista system truly successful.
One more thing that sets it apart is customization; if you don’t like the pre-programmed serving size of either the Short or Long buttons, you can re-set the duration of the extraction process, thereby changing the size and potency of your beverage, just by holding down a button.

Instagram / @livezolausEver wished you could get energized in the morning without feeling like you have to give up hydration and health in exchange for a little cup of magic (or coffee)?
Ideally, a morning pick-me-up shouldn’t feel like a bargain with your future self, and it would be better if that energy wasn’t accompanied by a “crash” a few hours later.
The more energy you get, the more tired you’ll be — something that sounds straight out of an instructional folktale.
Recently, I realized that drinking coffee and staring at the low pulse of my desktop monitor gives me a persistent headache and started looking into healthier alternatives.
Energy is good — there must be ways to get it that don’t require a heavy compromise.
In my research, I stumbled across a good old-fashioned win-win in the form of Zola’s 100% Natural Coconut Water with Espresso. It has as much caffeine as a 2-ounce shot of espresso, but more potassium per can than a whole banana. And thanks to a public consciousness of athleisure that borders on single-minded, most of us have at least heard that coconut water is really good at keeping you hydrated.
That last part is important because one of the main reasons you feel tired hours after drinking coffee is because it leaves you dehydrated. Zola’s beverages give you energy, while their combination of essential electrolytes like potassium, sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium saves you from feeling fatigued.
Like most win-wins, it feels like you’re cheating. It’s also all natural, gluten and GMO-free, 100% vegan, low in calories, and comes in a BPA-free can.
If you’re concerned about taste, it’s probably helpful to note that I’ve always hated coconut water — as great as it was for your body, I couldn’t bring myself to drink it. But I recently had a chance to try Zola’s newest coconut energy drinks with other fruit influences added, and I actually liked them. I can only speak for my palette, but I didn’t exactly start at a neutral point either and I consider myself a fan now.
All in all, if you’re looking for a way to get your fix of caffeine without the crash — or want a healthier way to caffeinate — this would be a great place to start.

By grinding dried rooibos leaves into a fine powder, the Ethelstons’ company, Red Espresso, has elbowed this wild bush tea into the boutique coffee market. Put their powder through any high-pressure espresso machine and you’ll get all the intense flavor of a coffee-based drink and almost six times the antioxidants and other cancer-fighting properties of regular tea — with none of the caffeine. Of course, it tastes nothing like coffee, but the pressurized rooibos has a potent, aromatic flavor that’s miles from your mother’s cuppa Lipton — and it even forms its own crema. When it’s served with a swirl of honey and a hit of cinnamon, I’d choose it over a high-octane cappuccino any day.

The Ethelstons married “fairly late in life” after establishing successful careers — Pete as an SAP consultant in Asia and Monique as a marketer for large beverage brands in South Africa. Things veered from the script when Pete convinced his bride to hop off the hamster wheel in 2005 for an extended honeymoon in Nepal and Tibet. There, they ventured into the more remote and spiritual corners, and found themselves grappling with the bigger questions. “In our corporate lives we had this nagging feeling that we weren’t doing people or the planet much good,” says Pete.
Then, in a Kathmandu cafe, Pete received an email from Carl Pretorius, a friend and business partner (they own a tree nursery together). The message told how Pretorius — jittery after his sixth coffee that day, but keen for more — had opened a rooibos tea bag and put the contents through his espresso machine. Over several weeks, by using high-quality rooibos and tinkering with the exact grind, Pretorius had produced something that mimicked a real espresso. “Let’s do this thing together,” he emailed, knowing that Pete and Monique had the perfect skillset to bring his idea to market.
It’s a superfood that’s indulgent … I’m still looking for the downside.
Carolina Tristão, Tristão Coffee Company
Pretorius remains a partner in the business, but from day one it has been driven and financed by the Ethelstons. It hasn’t been easy — even with Monique’s marketing background — but they’ve always known they were onto something: “Coffee doesn’t agree with me,” says Pete, “so for years I didn’t go to cafes.” Red Espresso transcends the coffee and health markets like no other product (matcha, a powder made from green tea leaves, is its closest rival but contains about as much caffeine as java). Many of their most loyal customers are coffee junkies.

Their first big break came six months after receiving their friend’s email, when they partnered with the South African retail chain Woolworths to include red cappuccinos on its cafe menu. Since then, Woolworths and Red Espresso have worked together on a number of products, under Pete and Monique’s Red Espresso brand. “They were ahead of the health trend,” says Woolworths’ food product developer Claire Edwards, “and we’ve been able to help them on the retail side.”
The early years were difficult. And expensive. Teaming up with rooibos farmers working at the highest altitude in the world — where the most flavor- and antioxidant-rich leaves grow — they agreed on a pricing structure that, using fair-trade principles, rewarded these fourth-generation producers for their superior product. And they spent a lot of money to secure intellectual property rights all over the world patenting the exact grind of their product. Not to mention equipment costs (rooibos, harder and twiggier than coffee, is hell on grinding blades).

In the midst of the challenges were important wins. In 2008, Red Espresso was voted best new product by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. This prompted offers from major retailers, including Whole Foods, but Pete and Monique turned them down, worried the product would get lost on foreign shelves without consumer education.
The game changer came in 2014 with the arrival of Nespresso-compatible capsules, which eliminated the possibility of human error and allowed consumers to bring the cafe experience into their homes. Red Espresso capsules have seen 154 percent year-on-year growth since launch, according to Woolworths, and the company has added four flavored varieties, all sugar- and caffeine-free. The environmental debate surrounding single-serve coffee has not escaped the Ethelstons’ attention: Their capsules are recyclable (they’re testing biodegradable ones), and they’ve undertaken other green initiatives, including their Red Cedar Project.
And now Red Espresso is redoubling its efforts abroad — starting with its newly launched U.S. online store. The company has partnered with Carolina Tristão, from Brazilian coffee producer Tristão, who spent a decade in advertising in the U.S. before joining her family’s business. The first obstacle is getting consumers to understand the product: “At least everyone in South Africa knows what rooibos is,” says Tristão. And then there’s the fact that Keurig, not Nespresso, dominates the U.S. coffee-at-home market.

On the plus side, tea sales in the United States are projected to reach $ 9 billion by 2020 (up from $ 7 billion in 2015), according to market research firm Packaged Facts, and the National Coffee Association reports that single-serve brands in the U.S. have jumped from 21 percent of dollar sales to 41 percent in the past five years. By using “sniper tactics and micro-influencers,” Tristão is hoping to gain traction in select niches, from sports enthusiasts and yogis to pregnant women and nutritionists. “To understand how amazing Red Espresso is, you have to incorporate it into your life,” says Tristão, who makes red lattes for her kids and drinks red iced tea when she’s trying to cut back on the vino. “It’s a superfood that’s indulgent … I’m still looking for the downside.”
“How difficult can it be to stand out if you’re the only brand in your category?” asks Pete, before recalling just how difficult it’s been at times. But with a product that treats allergies, reduces blood pressure, improves bone health and much more, at least the Ethelstons are no longer dogged by regrets over their lives’ purposes.

Access to coffee is a universal human right, a fact that corporations acknowledge by placing coffee machines in conspicuous locations in nearly every workplace imaginable. To give you some idea of how important coffee is, coffee is available on the International Space Station, despite the absence of gravity, which is necessary for coffee to adhere to cups. (Until recently astronauts sucked freeze-dried coffee out of bags.)
Coffee is also available at WeWork, the popular chain of co-working spaces — as long as you have the password. San Francisco tech entrepreneur Paul Lanzi posted this photo on Facebook today, and I can’t stop looking at it:
/cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/8193839/espresso.jpg)
On one hand, I understand that WeWork sells access, and it can’t just give coffee away to every human being who walks onto the premises. Tragedy of the commons and all that. On the other hand: what kind of dystopian future do we inhabit if part of your job involves learning and then keeping track of the coffee password, which probably has to be changed per corporate policy every six weeks, and must involve a combination of capital letters, numbers, symbols, coffees, and teas.
I asked Paul what the hell was going on in this picture, exactly. (Disclosure: Paul and I are friends.) “They recently installed it,” he told me. “But I think it’s missing some piece and so whenever you press the latte button, it goes into lockdown mode and none of the ‘community managers’ from WeWork have the password.”
Paul’s Facebook friends have suggested any number of plausible coffee passwords, including Coffee123, TK, correct-horse-battery-staple, and GiveMe1CoffeeOrIWillCutYou. So far nothing has worked, and his latte is still on lockdown?
We can put coffee on the moon, but we password-protect it at home. SoftBank plans to invest $ 3 billion in WeWork, it was reported today. At that price someone really ought to tell them the coffee password.
]]>While it may look a bit more like a weapon (albeit a very elegant one) than a spoon, the Modishspoon serves the same purpose as the more common utensil, but works with a bit more precision. Keeping the crema of your espresso not only keeps the beverage hotter for longer, but is also key to the flavor. And keeping the crema is exactly what Modishspoon sets out to do.
More: Sudden Coffee uses freeze-dried beans to make instant brew that doesn’t suck
The beautiful little spoon features an innovative design that allows it to lay right on the edge of your espresso cup. It’s about three times smaller than a traditional coffee spoon and because it shares so little surface area with surfaces that are not your espresso, it promises to be a hygienic option for stirring sugar into your hot treat. The relatively sharp profile of the Modishspoon also allows it to “cut through” the crema of the espresso, which allows it to keep its integrity (which is to say, its thickness and foaminess).
Because the Modishspoon doesn’t have that classic spoon indentation (this is not the right utensil for eating ice cream), it ensures less dripping than a standard spoon. Forged with forged from 18/10 stainless steel and hand-polished by Italian craftsmen, this is certainly a kitchen tool you will want to keep on display.
With more than a month left in its Kickstarter campaign, the Modishspoon is just a couple thousand dollars away from its funding goal. If you’re interested in helping, you can pre-order one of these espresso spoons for $ 5 with an expected delivery date of July.
