A KLM flight flying to Amsterdam from Abu Dhabi had to be escorted by two fighter jets from the Dutch airforce after a fight broke out on board. A 29-year-old American man caused the fracas when he became “aggressive” after being asked to return to his seat. The fight broke out 30 minutes before the flight was due to land at Schiphol airport, Amsterdam early on Saturday. Joanna Helmonds, a spokeswoman for the country’s border police, told AFP: “A scuffle broke out and the cabin crew, together with other passengers, managed to restrain the man.” Dutch television news service RTL Nieuws reported that the man “started punching everyone around him.” According to a flight attendant who spoke to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the man “started screaming and hitting wildly” after the crew managed to get him to his seat. “His behaviour was very threatening from one moment to the next,” she added. The cabin crew member also said that the man didn’t seem to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Helmonds said several passengers were lightly wounded, two of whom were left with black eyes. The Dutch air force sent two F-16 fighter jets to escort the flight to the airport. The jets, which are armed with air-to-air missiles, are on high alert but are only used in highly unusual cases, the Dutch air force said. Normally such jets are only sent in “exceptional” cases when air traffic control can’t contact the plane, or if there’s no thirdly if the pilot does not identify themselves, an air force spokesperson told RTL Nieuws. The KLM Airbus A330-200 jet was given special clearance to land immediately at Schiphol airport. Police arrested the man on arrival and he was examined at the airport, said Helmonds. Officers said that he was disoriented and was admitted to a psychiatric institution for observation, she added. A spokesman for KLM told AFP the airline “regretted the unpleasant incident”, but that cabin crew followed the normal procedures when dealing with an unruly passenger. “Passengers and crew have laid a complaint against the man,” Heleen Makkinga said. Express.co.uk has contacted KLM for further comment on the incident. Last month a man on a flight from Mumbai to Kolkata in India was kicked off a plane after he attempted to enter the cockpit as the aircraft prepared to take-off. He tried to enter the cockpit and said he needed to charge his phone, which constituted as “security violation,” the carrier has said. It’s believed he was drunk.

Last fall, Ken Block teased his next big project, a custom rally-spec Ford Escort RS Cosworth. This isn’t just some 25-year-old economy car. The Escort RS Cosworth was a fully homologated rally machine. Block’s is one of just a few thousand that were ever built. This isn’t just some show car, either. Block plans to race it in several rally series around the world. The Escort RS Cosworth will also star in “GymkhanaTEN” sometime this fall.
In America, the Escort is mostly known as a cheap economy car with about as much flavor and jazz as a bologna sandwich. On the other hand, the European Ford Escort had a much more exciting history. Yes, most were just basic economy cars like the American model, but there were some really hot ones like the Escort RS1600 and this RS Cosworth.
The latter added all-wheel drive, a 227-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged Cosworth engine and an almost comically large rear wing. The car’s top speed was 150 mph and it could hit 62 mph in just 5.7 seconds. In racing trim, the Escort RS Cosworth won races with rally heroes like Carlos Sainz and Tommi Mäkinen.
Block’s Escort was painted by Death Spray Custom, the same artist that did some of Block’s Focus rally cars. The lightning-bolt design is an evolution of last year’s livery.
Block will race the car in both American Rallycross and the World Rally Championship race in Spain.

Much of the virtual reality film GFE takes place in luxury San Francisco hotel rooms — softly lit, cozy spaces — while soothing music lingers in the background. There’s only one main character: a young woman who narrates her experience as a high-end escort, providing a “girlfriend experience” of dates, conversation and intimacy. She walks through Union Square in purple boots and a short skirt, sits across from the viewer at a cafe, applies lipstick in a hotel mirror. At times, the camera’s point of view places you as a neutral observer; at other moments you’re the implied client, locking eyes with the woman.
The closeness you feel to subjects in virtual reality is heightened here, for better or worse. Your level of potential discomfort is “a bit of a Rorschach test” for how one feels about sex work, said director Michael Jacobs. “I wanted to try to find a story or a character or an idea that would really push the viewer to confront something.”
Premiering at SXSW, the film is described as a fictional “documentary fantasy” by Jacobs. The premise is to take you, in just under five minutes, through what it’s like to have a liaison with the woman, who regularly works as an escort in real life and is anonymous in the film. She narrates her own experiences unscripted, but the scenes were all staged; there were no real clients involved.
About two-thirds of the way in, she appears in lingerie, with the viewer assuming a first-person point of view. She looks directly at the camera and removes her bra. The film cuts to the woman kneeling on the bed, naked. You have to physically look downward to see a following scene of her lying down while languidly stroking her right thigh.
The nude scenes last less than a minute and aren’t more explicit than what may appear in an R-rated movie. Yet the same levels of intimacy that have fueled porn as a major early application of consumer VR may instead unsettle viewers here. Viewers demoing the film at SXSW’s virtual cinema were visibly uncomfortable, shifting their weight from foot to foot and wrapping their arms tight around their chest. It’s a fine line to walk: Sex workers are a frequent source of fascination in the media, but depicting them on camera — especially with VR’s sense of presence — invites a prurient and exploitative male gaze.
“I think that can be provocative … what those emotions do to you and how you examine that. Do you find it compelling? Are you disgusted? Is it a version of an erotic fantasy? Does it reaffirm everything you believe about escort work? Or does it bump up against that?” said Jacobs, who described the piece as sex positive. “I love the idea of demystifying escort work and bringing a sense of empowerment to escorts, to women who do this work, and men.”
The production process came with strict conditions. There were two men on set — Jacobs and the director of photography — with four women forming the rest of the crew. It took two months of negotiation with the escort before the shoot last summer in which Jacobs went through the same vetting process as any of the woman’s clients, including providing his wife’s contact information as a reference. They met only once, at the shoot, and have never spoken on the phone. “I don’t know her name. I don’t know where she lives. I don’t know where she’s from,” Jacobs said.
This anonymity — even to the filming crew — adds another level of intrigue: How do we know that this is an authentic experience, and that the escort’s stories are true? Jacobs says the mystery is itself part of an authentic girlfriend experience. The woman who stars in this film is skilled at performing a certain persona while keeping her true identity unknowable, he told me. She allows clients to project their fantasies onto her. In GFE, the question remains, does virtual reality invite the viewer to do the same?

The virtually unused 1980 Mark II Escort RS2000 Custom is in immaculate condition and has previously been owned by two Ford collectors who just liked to look at it.
The motor has maintained it’s original diamond white paintwork and there are even marks on doors and the underside from the factory sponges used during its pre-delivery inspection.
There was a huge crowd in attendance as the RS200 was brought out and it drew gasps from an awestruck audience.
An inevitable and intense bidding war then got underway with interest on the phone, online and in the room.
It was eventually sold on the phone to a UK collector, who paid a hammer price of £87,000.
With fees added on the total price paid by the buyer was £97,000.
The sale represents a huge hike from when it was first bought in 1980 when Mr FN Dunstan, of Nottingham paid just £4,993.80 for the car to order.
Mr Dunstan covered just 700 miles before selling it to a keen Ford collector, who stored it in an air-tight chamber to perfectly preserve it, in the 1980s.
It remained in his ownership until around eight years ago, when he decided to sell it to a fellow Ford collector, with whom it had remained with until last week.
The white rally car has a four-cylinder 1.8 litre Cosworth engine which gives it a top speed of 108mph.
It has a chocolate brown interior typical of the era and the dashboard is lined with leather, however the seats are predominantly cloth.
There is no radio or aerial.
The car was sold by Silverstone Auctions, Warwickshire, who say the Escort was a true one-off.
The auctioneers’ classic car specialist, Joe Watts, said: “I’ve never seen anything like this car – it even smells new inside.
“It is like it just came out of the factory.
“In perfect showroom condition and with only 900 miles on the clock, there is just nothing else like it.
“It has almost mythical status among Ford fans and it had bidders fighting over it.
“We had bids on the phone, on the internet and in the sale room but it eventually sold to a prominent UK collector who won the car with a phone bid.”
Brisbane police thought they had come across a “halloween prank” when they found an Australian man ‘cooking’ his dead wife’s feet in a pot after he allegedly killed her.
An inquest into the death of Mayang Prasetyo, a pre-operation transgender sex worker, was told that police encountered a particularly gruesome scene when they visited the couple’s apartment.
Police were alerted to disturbances at the apartment by an electrician who was called on to fix the electricity supply, which was blown during a cooking mishap as Marcus Volke, 27, attempted to dispose of Prasetyo’s body back in 2014.
“Yeah, I’ve got a bit of a problem. Umm, I was cooking on my stove. It’s an electric stove and the stock boiled over, dripped down and umm, got in the oven,” Volke explained in a call which was released following the murder.
“And it basically made this big bang and then all my power turned off. Does it sound like something you’d be able to fix today?”
The tradesman got the power back online but alerted the building manager over bottles of bleach, rubbish bags and a foul stench in the apartment. The manager then contacted police.
When officers arrived, Volke fled the scene armed with a knife, and his body was later found in a rubbish skip after apparently killing himself.
“I thought it was a sick prank, some kind of Halloween [thing],” Constable Liam McWhinney said of finding human feet in the pot. “When I put two and two together, I realised it wasn’t a prank.”
Prasetyo, originally from Indonesia, and Volke had both been working in Australia as escorts.

The Courier Mail report that the couple married while they were living in Denmark in 2013 before moving to Bali and eventually Brisbane. Volke’s family, who live close to Melbourne, were reportedly not aware of his wife or his profession.
The inquest heard that Volke went to a doctor for anxiety, depression and a sleep disorder two weeks before the murder. The coroner is expected to make a final ruling on the case later this month.

]]>Amidst Uber’s recent problems surrounding its workplace culture, a new incident involving a company trip to a South Korean escort bar has been brought to light, according to a report published by The Information. The 2014 incident prompted a complaint to the company’s human resources department, and recently came to light when company officials tried to get their stories straight with former employees.
The report outlines a trip by a group of Uber employees to a Seoul karaoke-escort bar in 2014, which included company CEO Travis Kalanick and his girlfriend, Gabi Holzwarth. After arriving, several male employees picked escorts to sit with, and went to sing karaoke. Uncomfortable, a female marketing manager, who was part of the group, left after a couple of minutes, while Holzwarth and Kalanick left after an hour. The manager later complained to the company’s HR department, noting in the exchange that “[I]t made me feel horrible as a girl (seeing those girls with number tags and being called out is really degrading).” In another exchange to Holzwarth, the manager noted that she didn’t realize what was going on until they “got into that room.” According to The Information, it’s not clear how the issue was resolved.
Following a blog post by a former employee that highlighted the company’s sexist workplace culture, Uber’s senior VP of business Emil Michael reached out to Holzwarth, who has since left the company. He asked if she had spoken to reporters, and if she would tell people that they had just gone to for karaoke, and that they “had a good time,” if asked. Feeling pressured by the exchange, Holzwarth spoke with the company’s public relations executive, Rachel Whetstone, as well as Kalanick, saying that she wouldn’t lie if asked. She told The Information that “she wouldn’t have considered speaking publicly had Mr. Michael not attempted to ‘silence’ her.”
An Uber spokesperson said in a statement to The Information that “this all happened nearly three years ago. It was previously reported to human resources and in early March was referred to Tammy Albarran and Eric Holder,” while Michael noted that he had only intended to get ahead of the news cycle, and that his purpose for the call was misunderstood. In 2014, Michael made headlines after he suggested that the company should target reporters who write about the company negatively.
The intense focus on Uber’s internal workplace culture has sparked an investigation led by former US Attorney General Eric Holder and Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington, and has prompted company executives to leave. However, that investigation has been criticized by Uber employees, who were concerned about Huffington’s ability to remain impartial during the investigation, and after an interview with CNN in which she claimed that sexual harassment wasn’t a systemic issue at the company.

Allegations of sexual harassment, among other issues within Uber, have been particularly persistent since the beginning of this year. A new report paints Uber’s toxic culture as a problem that goes all the way to the top.
The attention to the ride-sharing startup’s alleged culture of sexual harassment began when a former engineer named Susan J. Fowler published a detailed account of what she describes as her boss soliciting her for sex and the subsequent nonreaction from Uber’s human resources. Board member Arianna Huffington addressed the allegations and announced that former Attorney General Eric Holder would lead an internal investigation to determine what needs to change.
Yesterday, the Information published a new story that recounts the time, in 2014, that Uber CEO Travis Kalanick allegedly visited an escort-karaoke bar in Seoul along with five Uber employees. According to the report, four of the employees were male managers who proceeded to participate in the bar’s system of calling out women by their designated number to accompany them for the evening. The fifth employee was a female marketing manager who felt uncomfortable in the situation. Reportedly, Kalanick left with his girlfriend, Gabi Holzwarth, about 45 minutes later. Holzwarth confirms the story.
According to Holzwarth, the female manager that was present reported the incident to Uber’s HR chief a year later. Holzwarth also says that she discussed what had happened with the manager via instant message afterwards and the Information was able to view the exchanges. “[I]t made me feel horrible as a girl (seeing those girls with number tags and being called out is really degrading),” one of the messages reads.
The reason this incident is coming up now is because Holzwarth says that she was contacted by Uber’s senior VP of business Emil Michael just three weeks ago. From the report:
Emil Michael—who was in the Uber group that visited the escort-karaoke bar—called her and said he feared the South Korea incident would be discovered by the press. He repeatedly asked her to tell anyone who asked about it that the group had visited a karaoke bar, she says.
“I just want to make sure that if this story comes out,” that she would say they went to karaoke and “had a good time,” Mr. Michael said, according to Ms. Holzwarth…
“I’m not going to lie for them,” she said in an interview with The Information this week. In the interview, she described Mr. Kalanick as “part of a class of privileged men who have been taught they can do whatever they want, and now they can.”
Michael told the Information that his intentions weren’t to silence Holzwarth but just to give her a heads up in case reporters contacted her. He says that he’s “very sorry if the purpose of my call was misunderstood.”
It’s unclear what (if anything) was done about the manager’s complaint at the time. An Uber spokeswoman told the Information: “This all happened nearly three years ago. It was previously reported to human resources and in early March was referred to Tammy Albarran and Eric Holder.” Albarran and Holder are leading the internal investigation of Uber.
Holzwarth says that while they were still dating, Kalanick told her that the employee “must have a lawyer and wants something.” To which she explained that “sometimes it just takes time for women to talk about these things.”
Holzwarth also allegedly had a recent exchange with Kalanick in which she explained how Michael’s call had upset her and she asked if Kalanick might consider stepping down from his CEO position. Kalanick suggested that 2,000 employees might want him to go, but more than 10,000 want him to stick around. “You’ll know when you’re a mother,” he reportedly said.
Uber employees are reportedly looking for ways out but the company’s reputation has become a black mark on a resume. Its president, Jeff Jones, unceremoniously quit last week saying that “the beliefs and approach to leadership that have guided my career are inconsistent with what I saw and experienced at Uber.”
Employees have also recently voiced displeasure with board member Arianna Huffington’s approach to the internal investigation. Some feel that she appears to be running defense for the company rather than truly seeking to change the culture. But those people are surely not part of the 10,000 that “need” Kalanick and his fatherly ways.
In case you were counting, it has been more than a month since Uber CEO Travis Kalanick announced an investigation into claims of sexual harassment and discrimination within his company. Tonight The Information reports that in 2014, Kalanick senior VP of business Emil Michael and several other employees visited an “escort-karaoke bar.” Within minutes of that article being published, another report from Arizona revealed that one of the company’s self-driving cars has been involved in an accident.
In a story recounted by Gabi Holzwarth, a professional violinist and business development manager who was dating Kalanick at the time, four other men in the group picked out their favorites from a group of numbered women and proceeded downstairs to sing karaoke. Holzwarth and Kalanick left the rest of the group behind after about 45 minutes. A female Uber manager in the group was “visibly unhappy,” quickly left and made a report to HR about it a year later.
All of this has become news now, apparently, because in the last month Michael contacted Holzwarth in an attempt to stop the trip from becoming public knowledge, telling her to simply say they went to karaoke and had a good time. His statement, which is quoted in the article, reads: “Given the intense news cycle I thought it was the right thing to do to reach out and let her know that reporters may try to contact her directly. I have known her for a long time, consider her a friend and did not want her to be taken by surprise. Her recollection of this conversation was different from mine and I am very sorry if the purpose of my call was misunderstood.”
A statement from Uber says that “This all happened about three years ago and was previously reported to human resources. In early March it was referred to Eric Holder and Tammy Albarran as part of their review.”

As far as the accident, a picture posted on Twitter showed one of Uber’s self-driving Volvo SUVs laying on its side in the road. It’s next to a Ford Edge showing serious damage along the passenger side. The Arizona Republic spoke to a policeman who says that a vehicle failed to yield while making a left turn and collided with the self-driving car before a third car was hit by one of the first two vehicles. Thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported. The company is aware of the incident, but so far we don’t have any other information and don’t know if the car was in self-driving mode at the time of the accident.
As I noted the last time Uber had two negative stories break almost simultaneously, a slew of self-inflicted wounds have already damaged the company’s credibility. Emil Michael is the same exec who openly discussed hiring investigators to dig up dirt, and these Volvos are on Arizona streets because California temporarily banned them.
We keep hearing that Uber and its executives — including Kalanick, who just met with Jesse Jackson on an apology tour — will change, but the bad stories seem to stay the same, whether they’re about internal obliviousness about the problems with its workplace culture or making sure its self-driving cars are safe before they’re let loose on public streets.
