“As Kiwi Farms has felt more threatened, they have reacted by being more threatening,” Prince told The Washington Post. “We think there is an imminent danger, and the pace at which law enforcement is able to respond to those threats we don’t think is fast enough to keep up.” On the company’s blog, Prince said that Cloudflare saw an increase in targeted threats “unlike we have previously seen from Kiwi Farms or any other customer before.”
Kiwi Farms was founded in 2013 by former 8chan administrator Joshua Moon. In the decade since it went online, at least three suicides have been linked to harassment campaigns that originated on the forum. In recent weeks, Kiwi Farms has gained widespread notoriety across both sides of the US political spectrum. After she was the target of multiple swatting attacks that originated on the website, trans Twitch streamer Clara Sorrenti began a campaign to shut down Kiwi Farms. She used the hashtag DropKiwifarms to urge Cloudflare and other critical internet infrastructure providers to stop serving the website.
“There are countless people suffering because of this website,” Sorrenti told The Post on Saturday, moments after police arrived at her home in the wake of another swatting attempt. “Kiwi Farms isn’t about free speech, it’s about hate speech. The majority of the content on the site is threads used for targeted harassment against political targets.”
Separately, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia called for the forum’s shutdown after a user claiming affiliation with Kiwi Farms sent police to her home. “That website needs to be taken down,” Greene told Newsmax during an interview. “There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy."
Earlier in the week, it appeared Cloudflare would not take action against Kiwi Farms. The company published a blog post on Wednesday detailing its policies on abusive content. Without directly mentioning the forum, Prince and another executive argued that withholding security services from websites the company and public find reprehensible would ultimately harm oppressed and marginalized voices.
On Saturday, Prince described Cloudflare’s decision to block Kiwi Farms as a “dangerous one that we are not comfortable with.” He told The Post he would have preferred to take action in response to a court order but added it was an easier call than when Cloudflare decided to drop the Daily Stormer and 8chan. As of the writing of this story, Kiwi Farms is still online after moving to DDoS-guard and a Russian domain.

“I saw that report. I cannot confirm that it is accurate. I hope that they did not,” the State Department’s spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, said, referring to the Russian military, as she responded to a question about the S-300.
“That would be a sort of a serious escalation” of the situation on the ground in Syria, she added, while refusing to comment further on the issue. Earlier on Tuesday, the Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that the Russian military have completed the delivery.
The hardware supplied to Syria consisted of 49 pieces of military equipment, including radars, control vehicles and four S-300 launchers, he added. A unified air defense control system will be created in Syria by October 20, while training of the Syrian crews will take three months, according to Shoigu. The new air defense systems will be particularly able to suppress satellite navigation, radars and communications systems of enemy aircraft over the Mediterranean Sea, in what might be a source of particular concern for the US and its allies.
Russia’s move follows the downing of the Il-20 reconnaissance plane over Syria. It was shot down by a Syrian air defense system while the Israeli jets used it as a cover during an air raid striking targets in the Latakia province. Tel Aviv denied responsibility for the tragedy while the Russian Defense Ministry presented a detailed report on the incident and radar data showing that an Israeli jet indeed used the Russian plane as a cover.

Enlarge / Donald Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping in Beijing in November.
The Trump administration is looking to widen its trade war with China by restricting Chinese access to US technology, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
“The Treasury Department is crafting rules that would block firms with at least 25 percent Chinese ownership from buying companies involved in what the White House calls ‘industrially significant technology,'” the Wall Street Journal says. A separate proposal would institute beefed-up export controls preventing Chinese companies from buying these technologies from US firms.
The policies could be announced as soon as this week, the Journal says.
]]>The conflict in Syria remains a source of a major international security concerns as “global powers are at play” there, and some regional actors, such as Israel, who also pursue their own aims in this situation, Ben-Shalom, an Israeli Lieutenant Colonel in Reserve and a columnist for the Jerusalem Post, told RT’s Oksana Boyko.
With so many interests intertwined, the possibility of a “miscalculation” in the policy of one of the players is growing, which, in turn, could make the situation quickly “deteriorate into a regional war,” he said. At the same time, he called the fears of a potentially looming global conflict exaggerated, adding that the possibility of a world war over Syria is unlikely.
The Israeli Air Force veteran also justified his county’s violation of its neighbors’ sovereignty, and particularly strikes against facilities in Syria, by saying that Israel just has no other choice. “The only reason to enter the Syrian airspace would be to take specific targets threatening us,” he said.
“With all due respect, at the end of the day, we have sometimes to go and do what needs to be done because there is an imminent threat,” Ben-Shalom said while justifying the Israeli actions. “At that time we have to act and diplomacy must be put aside,” he added.

What is most alarming, both in terms of the politicians and spokespeople on both sides, is that nobody seems to understand the danger of this steady escalation between the US and Russia, former US diplomat John Graham told RT.

LONDON (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Theresa May called on Tuesday for a “long-term response” by the West to the security threat from Russia as NATO followed member states in expelling Russian diplomats over the poisoning of a double agent in England.
In the most sweeping such action against Moscow since the height of the Cold War, the United States and European Union members plan to expel scores of Russian diplomats in action against the Kremlin for the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter which they have blamed on Russia.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

President Donald Trump has tweeted in reaction to the terrorist attack in Manhattan, “I have just ordered Homeland Security to step up our already Extreme Vetting Program. Being politically correct is fine, but not for this!”
In the wake of the vehicular terrorist attack in Manhattan that killed eight and injured at least 12 others on Tuesday, Trump has taken to Twitter to announce stricter restraints on granting entry to the US.
I have just ordered Homeland Security to step up our already Extreme Vetting Program. Being politically correct is fine, but not for this!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 1, 2017
The terrorist suspect’s identity has yet to be confirmed by police, but widespread reports citing law enforcement sources claim the suspect is 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbek native who gained legal status in the US in 2010.
Saipov allegedly came to the US under the Diversity Visa Program, which provides visas to people from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States, according to ABC News.
Trump’s “extreme vetting” of refugees and immigrants from select countries has been challenged multiple times in federal court, and the US Supreme Court has before it his travel ban policy against several Muslim-majority countries and Chad, North Korea and Venezuela.

Trump called the attacker “a very sick and deranged person.”
In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!

A congressional committee investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election has stepped up its probe over the past month, requesting that an agency that combats financial crime turn over confidential banking information on nearly 40 individuals and businesses, including at least nine who are American, BuzzFeed News has learned.
Senator Chuck Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network — FinCEN for short — on September 29, seeking information about any suspicious financial transactions banks may have flagged on the individuals and businesses since Jan 2015. Banks are required by law to flag such transactions for FinCEN.
The Judiciary Committee is one of three congressional committees looking into Russian interference. Its investigation only recently got off the ground after months spent negotiating the scope of its probe, two staffers told BuzzFeed News.
“The Senate Judiciary Committee is conducting an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, as well as the Department of Justice’s enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act,” Grassley’s letter says. “I am requesting a copy of any and all documents relating to Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) that have been filed regarding the following individuals or entities.” They include:
Rinat Akhmetshin, and Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian-American lobbyist and the Russian lawyer who met with Donald Trump, Jr. at Trump Tower in June 2016.
Robert Arakelian, another lobbyist who works with Akhmetshin.
Human Rights Accountability Global Initiative Foundation, the Washington, DC-based nonprofit headed by Veselnitskaya whose stated goal is to “restart American adoption of Russian children” but has lobbied to repeal the Magnitsky Act, the 2012 law that imposed sanctions on Russian officials.
Glenn Simpson, Thomas Catan, Peter Fritsch and their private investigation firm Fusion GPS, which commissioned the so-called “dossier” that alleged the Russian government had been “cultivating, supporting and assisting” President Donald Trump.
Christopher Steele, the former British intelligence agent who collected the intelligence for the dossier; his business partner, Christopher Burrows; and their firm Orbis Business Intelligence.
Perkins Coie, a law firm that reportedly retained and paid Fusion GPS on behalf of the Clinton campaign for research that ended up in the dossier.
Prevezon Holdings, a Russian-owned company that was charged with money laundering and settled with the Department of Justice earlier this year, and eight of its related companies.
The law firm Baker Hostetler, which was hired to defend Prevezon, and two of the firm’s attorneys, John Moscow and Mark Cymrot.
Banks, hedge funds, casinos, and other financial institutions are required under the Bank Secrecy Act to file suspicious activity reports with FinCEN when money laundering or fraud is suspected. They are also required to file SARs for certain cash or wire transactions of $ 10,000 or more, even if those transactions seem legitimate. SARs contain personal financial information, such as bank account numbers and a record of financial transactions. FinCEN may not have SARs on all the individuals and businesses the Committee named.
A spokesperson for Grassley, Michael Zona, did not respond to requests for comment about the committee’s investigation. Simpson, the Fusion GPS co-founder, declined to comment. Simpson’s business partners, Fritsch and Catan, did not respond to requests for comment. Burrows declined to comment on behalf of himself, Steele, and Orbis. Neither Cymrot nor a spokesperson for Baker Hostetler responded to requests for comment. Moscow, the other Baker Hostetler attorney, declined to comment. Akhmetshin, Arakelian, and Veselnitskaya also did not respond to requests for comment. Officials at Prevezon could not be reached. A spokeswoman for Perkins Coie did not respond to requests for comment.
Grassley’s letter set an October 13 deadline for FinCEN to turn over the financial information to his committee. But according to three sources, no suspicious activity reports have been sent to the committee.

AVDIYIVKA, Ukraine — “Attack. Counterattack. Attack. Counterattack.”
That’s how Kyiv regiment commander Yevhen Deydey described the battlefield maneuvering taking place on February 2, as Russia-backed separatists stepped up attacks against Ukrainian government forces in this embattled eastern Ukrainian city for a fifth straight day.
Ukraine bolstered its defenses with scores more troops and large-caliber artillery, including main battle tanks, which were seen by RFE/RL trundling toward the front line and positioned in the courtyard of a nine-story apartment building pocked with massive holes from direct artillery strikes.
These sorts of heavy weaponry are supposed to remain well back from here, under a 2-year-old cease-fire deal that international monitors say has been routinely violated by Ukrainian forces and the Russia-backed separatists they are fighting.
“Our tanks are preparing for battle,” Deydey said inside the Ukrainian Army’s forward-most command center, peering out a shattered window at his arsenal standing by in the courtyard. “This is a real escalation.”
The outburst of violence since January 29 has shattered a monthslong relative lull in fighting, pushed the city of Avdiyivka to the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, and heightened fears that full-scale warfare could reignite at any moment.
The racket of small arms, mortars, howitzers, and even tank fire — collectively referred to by soldiers as “the disco” — never let up here on February 2, and, in fact, grew in intensity throughout the day. The rumbling of Grad rockets pierced the winter chill and came crashing down on military positions and civilian homes not in ones and twos but by the truckload. Each multiple-launch rocket system carries up to 40 of them.
Ukraine’s military said fighting had pushed the death toll to at least 23 people, including civilians, since January 29 and closer to a total of 10,000 since the war erupted in April 2014.

Yulia Paevska, a volunteer medic who goes by the nickname “Tyra” after the U.S. supermodel-turned-TV-personality Tyra Banks and calls her colleagues her “angels,” told RFE/RL she had not seen fighting on this scale in Avdiyivka for two years.
“There is so much Grad. And it’s so expensive. I have no idea who pays for it,” she said in a nod to Russia’s putative — but stridently denied — support for the separatists.
Paevska said her team treated five wounded soldiers on February 2, including one with a serious shrapnel wound to his leg. She had been awakened four times overnight by incoming shelling.
Deydey saw a Russian hand in the tactics employed by fighters on the other side, who he said made several attempts to outflank his soldiers but were repelled by the Ukrainians.
“When the artillery strikes are especially accurate, and repeatedly, we know it’s professional [Russian] army guys,” he said.
Deydey displayed evidence of what he said was Russian psychological warfare targeting Ukrainian defense forces: text messages sent from mysterious numbers addressed to Ukrainian soldiers that read, “You are just meat to your commanders,” “Your body will be found when the snow melts,” and, “You’re like the Germans in Stalingrad.”

He shrugged off the messages and said he did not want to have to fight and would prefer peace.
“We have tried for a cease-fire,” he said, “but each time it is broken in minutes.”
Russia has denied direct involvement in the fighting, and President Vladimir Putin at a news conference in Budapest on February 2 accused Kyiv of provoking the latest lethal bout and using it as a ploy to win support from new U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump’s flattery of Putin has prompted considerable anxiety in Kyiv, which fears the new U.S. administration may lift sanctions imposed against Russia after its seizure of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
The new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, sought to assure Kyiv and others of Washington’s commitment to Ukrainian territorial integrity on February 2. In her first public statement from the UN Security Council, Haley called Crimea “a part of Ukraine” and vowed, “Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control of the peninsula to Ukraine.”
She said the “dire situation” in Ukraine as fighting surges “demands clear and strong condemnation of Russian actions.”

Residents of Avdiyivka who have been without electricity, water supplies, and heating in temperatures well below freezing since January 29, when shelling knocked out power to this city of around 22,000 people, would love nothing more than a respite from the violence.
But within hours of Haley’s remarks in New York, Avdiyivka residents Tamara and Olena told RFE/RL early on February 3 that they had spent the night in a cellar.
“The artillery was nonstop,” Tamara said, the worst since January 29.
Another local, Serhiy Kovalenko, thrust a gloved hand out to show two pieces of shrapnel that he said came from a blast overnight in the courtyard of his mother’s apartment.
“Return this to Putin and tell him the sad people of Avdiyivka say thank you,” he added.

Oleksandr, a pensioner who lives in the old town that butts up against the front line, said on February 2 that the level of fighting was “probably worse” than it was in 2014. He did not provide his last name out of fear of being seen as critical of Ukraine’s government.
“Unfortunately, [this violence] is nothing new,” Oleksandr said, gesturing to the summer kitchen in his yard that was obliterated by a shell late on February 1. “We have been living this nightmare for two years.”
And yet, like most people here, he won’t leave.
“I was born here and I will die here,” he said. “If it’s [by a shell], so be it.
“We all end up in the ground somehow.”
