While oil has not been included on the list of bilateral tariffs, Chinese refiners have been staying away from buying crude from the US.

“We are one of the major carriers for crude oil from the US to China. Before [the trade war] we had a nice business, but now it’s totally stopped,” Xie Chunlin, the president of CMES, said on the sidelines of the Global Maritime Forum’s Annual Summit in Hong Kong, as quoted by Reuters.

“It’s unfortunately happened, the trade war between the US and China. Surely for the shipping business, it’s not good,” the CMES president said.

He added that the trade war was also forcing China to diversify its soybean supplies. Beijing is now buying most of its soybeans from South America.

China’s crude oil imports from America reached an average of 334,880 barrels per day through August, making Beijing the second-largest buyer of US oil after Canada.

In fact, China may be the largest buyer of American crude since much of the oil imported by Canada is re-exports – Canadian crude that briefly crosses into the US on pipelines before re-entering Canada. After ending a 40-year ban on oil exports in late 2015, the US has ramped up sales to two million barrels per day (bpd).

China buys most of its crude from Russia, with imports soaring from 665,000 bpd in 2014 to 1.2 million bpd last year. Beijing’s other major suppliers are Saudi Arabia and Iran.

  • Saudi Arabia has expelled Canada’s ambassador and frozen all new trade and investment with Ottawa over an escalating dispute centered on jailed human rights activists.
  • The feud appears to have begun on Friday, when Global Affairs Canada tweeted that it was “gravely concerned” about a new wave of arrests in the Kingdom targeting women’s rights activists.
  • In response, Saudi Arabia issued a fiery statement and gave Canada’s ambassador 24 hours to leave the country.
  • Saudi Arabia has come under scrutiny in recent months for arresting several prominent women’s rights activists just weeks before lifting its longstanding ban on women drivers.

Saudi Arabia has expelled Canada’s ambassador and frozen all trade and investment with Ottawa over an escalating dispute centered on jailed human rights activists.

Dutch parliament recognizes Armenian genocide, escalating row with Turkey https://briefnews.eu/dutch-parliament-recognizes-armenian-genocide-escalating-row-with-turkey/ https://briefnews.eu/dutch-parliament-recognizes-armenian-genocide-escalating-row-with-turkey/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 23:27:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dutch-parliament-recognizes-armenian-genocide-escalating-row-with-turkey/ The Dutch parliament has voted to recognize as genocide the 1915 massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire. The move deepens a diplomatic row between the Netherlands and Turkey, which has seen envoys recalled.

The motion, which was passed with the support of all major parties, comes after the Turkish government summoned the Dutch charge d’affaires in Ankara on Saturday to express its anger at the motion.
Turkey’s foreign ministry on Thursday condemned the motion’s approval, saying that it would not be legally binding or valid.

Armenia has long sought recognition for the killings as genocide, with the country saying it left some 1.5 million Armenians dead. The Turkish authorities refuse to recognize the events, which took place at the height of World War I, as genocide, arguing that there were atrocities on both sides.

As many as 29 countries, including Russia, Canada, much of the EU, and South American countries, as well as 48 out of 50 US states, have recognized the Armenian genocide.

The motion’s passage comes amid an increasingly tense relationship between the Netherlands and Turkey. Earlier this month, the Dutch Foreign Ministry formally withdrew its ambassador to Ankara and announced that it would not accept the appointment of a new Turkish ambassador.

The ministry’s announcement came after the diplomat was barred from the country following a dispute that began last March, when the Netherlands blocked visas for Turkish officials campaigning for votes among expatriate Turkish in the lead-up to the constitutional referendum which ultimately granted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeping powers.

Erdogan said at the time that the Netherlands must pay for its actions. “Sooner or later, they will pay for this, but we will rapidly bring the Netherlands to account by diplomatic means. We cannot let this go adrift,” he said.

The Turkish president also called the Netherlands “very nervous and cowardly” after it declined to let the country’s foreign minister enter the country. “They are Nazi remnants, they are fascists,” he told supporters at a rally in Istanbul. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte responded by demanding an apology from Ankara, stating that such comments were unacceptable.

Chris Christie defends Robert Mueller over escalating attacks against the Russia investigation https://briefnews.eu/chris-christie-defends-robert-mueller-over-escalating-attacks-against-the-russia-investigation/ https://briefnews.eu/chris-christie-defends-robert-mueller-over-escalating-attacks-against-the-russia-investigation/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2017 08:45:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chris-christie-defends-robert-mueller-over-escalating-attacks-against-the-russia-investigation/ chris christieScreenshot via MSNBC/Twitter

  • Chris Christie defended special counsel Robert Mueller amid attacks from President Donald Trump and his allies as the Russia investigation heats up.
  • The New Jersey governor and former Trump transition official suggested attacks on Mueller are misguided, because the special counsel could eventually exonerate the president.
  • Trump supporters have escalated their criticisms of Mueller and the Russia investigation at large in recent weeks after it was revealed that one of the prosecutors on Mueller’s team expressed what were seen as anti-Trump sentiments in text messages with an FBI lawyer.

Chris Christie, one of President Donald Trump’s close associates and a member of his transition team, defended special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russia’s meddling in the US election.

“I believe he’s an honest guy and I believe he’s going to try to do a good, honest, fair, just job,” Christie said of Mueller during an interview that aired Tuesday night on MSNBC. Christie made the comment when asked to respond to accusations that the Russia investigation is biased against the president.

“Bob Mueller is a good man who I think will try to do the right thing by this investigation but that doesn’t mean he’s perfect,” Christie added, pointing to text messages between an FBI agent and an FBI lawyer that indicated a possible bias against Trump. The agent, Peter Strzok, had worked on the Clinton email investigation and eventually joined Mueller in the Russia probe, but has since been removed.

“By allowing folks into the investigation who can be charged, based upon their own words, with having a bias towards Mrs. Clinton or against President Trump, that’s an issue,” Christie said.

Watch a portion of the interview below:

Trump himself has publicly criticized the FBI, Mueller, and his team of prosecutors. His assertions that the FBI’s reputation was “in tatters” and the “worst in history” were seen by critics as an attempt to discredit Mueller ahead whatever findings they may reach once the federal probe into Russia’s interference is complete.

Among other things, federal investigators are trying to determine the extent of Russia’s intervention in the 2016 US presidential race, which they believe was part of an effort to help get Trump elected. Prosecutors are also trying to determine whether anyone on the Trump campaign willfully cooperated with the Kremlin.

Additionally, Mueller is said to be pursuing an obstruction of justice inquiry over Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey and the president’s alleged attempts to get the FBI to back off of his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who has since pleaded guilty to charges and is now cooperating with Mueller.

Trump and people close to him who have landed in Mueller’s crosshairs have denied any wrongdoing.

Christie suggested Trump and his allies’ attacks on Mueller and the FBI are shortsighted: “I think they think, well, if we discredit him, then anything that happens will be discredited,” Christie said, “… this could turn out that Mueller exonerates the president. You don’t want to discredit the guy who might in fact exonerate you.”

Escalating North Korea tensions were ‘a match to light the fire’ — now markets are at a crucial crossroads https://briefnews.eu/escalating-north-korea-tensions-were-a-match-to-light-the-fire-now-markets-are-at-a-crucial-crossroads/ https://briefnews.eu/escalating-north-korea-tensions-were-a-match-to-light-the-fire-now-markets-are-at-a-crucial-crossroads/#respond Sun, 13 Aug 2017 11:10:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/escalating-north-korea-tensions-were-a-match-to-light-the-fire-now-markets-are-at-a-crucial-crossroads/ kim jong un

  • Mounting tensions between the US and North Korea threw markets for a loop on Thursday before settling on Friday. Now risk assets are at a critical juncture.
  • While the market reaction was swift and punishing, market experts don’t think it’s time to panic — yet.

Mere days ago, risk assets looked unstoppable. Now, amid escalating tensions between the US and North Korea, the market finds itself at a crucial crossroads.

The mounting conflict came to a head on Thursday, fueled by some fiery rhetoric from President Donald Trump and aggressive threats from North Korea, serving as a reckoning of sorts for some of the world’s most closely-watched markets.

The S&P 500 snapped out of an unprecedented streak of calm that day, falling 1.5%, the most since May. Treasury yields took a dive, while the yen — generally viewed as the world’s haven currency — strengthened. Gold, the ultimate safety destination, surged to a nine-week high. Meanwhile, the CBOE Volatility Index — or VIX, a gauge of stock market fear — spiked more than 40%.

“You just needed a match to light the fire, and that’s what North Korea did,” Komal Sri-Kumar, president of Sri-Kumar Global Strategies and the former chief global strategist at Trust Company of the West, told Business Insider by phone. “You didn’t have any ongoing stimulus measures, and at the same time we’re in an overvalued market. The market was all set for perfection, and it was no longer perfect, so we got a big decline.”

Then, on Friday, risk assets turned in a meager recovery, with stocks and Treasury yields rallying early in the session before petering out into the weekend.

That they didn’t rebound in fuller fashion isn’t particularly surprising to Kumar, who sees the market bunkered down in wait-and-see mode, not wanting to make any sudden movements that could be derailed by a new development out of North Korea.

Now, he views the path forward in the immediate term as a binary outcome. One possible result involves US officials scaling back the level of rhetoric, which would quickly move the market back to stability, lowering the price of gold and boosting stocks back toward record highs.

On the flip side, further goading by either the US or North Korea would ratchet tensions even higher, leading to further pain for risk assets. The price of gold will swell, while equities and Treasury yields could drop well below the levels they saw on Thursday, Sri-Kumar says.

If recent history is any indication, investors may view weakness in risk assets as an attractive entry point for buying more. This has been particularly true for US stocks during their ongoing eight-year bull market.

Back in May, the S&P 500 took just two days to almost fully recover from its biggest drop in eight months. The dynamic also played out in June 2016, when stocks sold off following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, only to make it back in a week. Not to mention China’s unexpected currency devaluation in August 2015, which saw the S&P 500 rebound from a 11% correction in a mere two months.

“The market’s buy-on-dips conditioning is strong,” Mohamed El-Erian, the chief economic advisor at Allianz, told Business Insider. “As such, it would take a worsening of the North Korean tensions to amplify the pressures on the VIX.”

Brad McMillan, chief investment officer of Commonwealth Financial Network, which oversees $ 114 billion, is similarly optimistic. He says we’re “probably not that close yet” to any sort of world-altering conflict. And while he acknowledges that South Korea will feel the biggest impact from any escalation, he doesn’t see US military action directly affecting US companies or corporate earnings.

Still, he recognizes that we’re talking about some highly volatile elements — most notably Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but also increasingly fragile financial markets characterized by crowded trades and abnormally low volatility.

“The chances are high that after a short-lived pullback, markets will recover,” McMillan wrote in a recent blog post. “Although risks are rising, they are not immediate. That said, we do need to keep an eye on this situation, as it really could be different this time.”

Trump is reportedly considering a ‘war room’ to hit back at the escalating Russia controversy https://briefnews.eu/trump-is-reportedly-considering-a-war-room-to-hit-back-at-the-escalating-russia-controversy/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-is-reportedly-considering-a-war-room-to-hit-back-at-the-escalating-russia-controversy/#respond Sun, 28 May 2017 01:01:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-is-reportedly-considering-a-war-room-to-hit-back-at-the-escalating-russia-controversy/ Donald TrumpAP

President Trump and his top advisers are reportedly considering creating a White House “war room” and a staff shake-up to combat current and future revelations related to the Russia controversy, The Washington Post reported on Saturday.

The primary goal of the “war room” will be to more aggressively fire back at fallout in the wake of Trump’s abrupt firing of FBI director James Comey on May 9.

Following Comey’s firing, the White House was besieged by a slew of negative news stories that raised further questions about the president’s and his associates’ ties to Russia.

That included Trump’s statement that “this Russia thing” had been a factor in his decision to fire Comey, who was spearheading the FBI’s investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign; reports that Trump shared highly-classified intelligence with Russian officials; and reports that Trump asked Comey to drop the FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn back in Feburary.

Recently, it emerged that Trump reportedly asked top intelligence officials to publicly push back against the Russia probe, and that senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner met with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak to discuss the creation of a secret “backchannel” between the US and Russia through Russian facilities in an attempt to bypass US surveillance.

The proposed war room, Axios reported, will be filled with “experienced veterans from the campaign trail who recognize the gravity of the situation.”

In an apparent acknowledgment of the seriousness of the situation, Trump staffers have reportedly begun using the phrase, “Go to the mattresses,” a line from “The Godfather,” meaning to go to or prepare for war.

The White House could turn to figures like former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and former deputy campaign manager David Bossie, for help in the “war room,” the Post noted. Lewandowski was fired last year after a series of campaign trail blunders, and Bossie is known for his 20-year-long investigation into Bill and Hillary Clinton.

White House chief strategist and former Breitbart leader Steve Bannon is reportedly spearheading the “war room” effort.

The White House also may be considering a shake-up of its communications strategy and staff, the Post reported.

That includes introducing more rallies across the country so that Trump can speak directly with voters.

“The conventional ways of communicating are not working for them,” one adviser told the Post. “They have to get the campaign brand back” and be able to communicate with an audience instead of having the report on it, the adviser added.

Aides have also floated possible changes to the daily press briefing and a downsized role for press secretary Sean Spicer. Some have discussed the option of having Spicer take on a more discreet and behind-the-scenes role following a series of press briefings that were widely-panned.

If Spicer is demoted, he will likely be replaced by deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who took over Spicer’s role in a number of press briefings as revelations continued to emerge in the Trump-Russia story.

Kushner, the Post noted, has advocated a proposal to have more Trump surrogates speak out on his behalf and to create a group within the White House whose goal is to push back against continuing Trump-Russia revelations.

“The bottom line is they need fresh legs; they need more legs,” Barry Bennett, a Trump campaign political adviser, told the Post. “They’re in full-scale war, and they’re thinly staffed.”
