The bubonic plague years and the breakout of two World Wars were terrible times. But these were not the worst periods to be alive, scientists claim in new research. It’s the year 536. The 6th century year is thought to have been the beginning of bizarrely cold and dark summers, blamed for causing crop failure in Ireland, Scandinavia and China. Amazingly, the unusual weather was perhaps caused by volcanic material such as ash blocking out parts of the sun and wreaking havoc with the environment. “It was the beginning of one of the worst periods to be alive, if not the worst year,” medieval historian Michael McCormick, of the Harvard University, told Science Magazine. His Antiquity study suggests the reason for the onset of the ‘Dark Age’ literally and metaphorically was a volcanic eruption. Evidence of volcanic material dating back to 536 was found in sample ice cores taken from the Colle Gnifetti glacier on the Swiss-Italian border. While scientists are unsure of the origin of the tephra – its thought it could have come via winds from North America or Iceland – the findings point to drastic cooling resulting in famine and a decline in human fortunes. The bizarre weather is reported to have continued for decades, with researchers now said to be continuing their search for the volcano that may have helped bring about the Dark Ages. While the study paints a gloomy picture, the same ice glacier also tells of a respite for Europeans, at least during the 600s. Lead levels around 640 indicate an upturn in the economy through the smelting of silver coins, according to the study, authored by Michael McCormick and Christopher Loveluck. Like this story? Enlarge / Italian scientists detected red and black mineral incrustations in victims’ skulls—the iron from human blood. (credit: P. Petrone et al.)
The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD wiped out several nearby towns and killed thousands of people. It has long been supposed that the vast majority died from asphyxiation, choking on the thick clouds of noxious gas and ash. But a recent paper by Italian archaeologists concludes that at least some of the Vesuvian victims died instantaneously from the intense heat of fast-moving lava flows, with temperatures high enough to boil brains and explode skulls.
As bioarchaeologist Kristina Killgrove notes over at Forbes, this new analysis, led by Pierpaolo Petrone of the University of Naples, builds on the Italian team’s short 2001 paper in Nature. This is when they first broached their hypothesis, noting that the body postures of many victims unearthed in waterfront chambers in the town of Herculaneum, near the foot of Vesuvius, showed evidence of thermal shock. There were telltale flexed body parts, like curled toes and charred bones, indicating sudden death from a blast of extreme heat.
It is estimated that the eruption of Vesuvius released 100,000 times the thermal energy of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, ejecting many tons of molten rock, pumice, and hot ash over the course of two days. In the first phase, immediately after the eruption, a long column of ash and pumice blanketed the surrounding towns, most notably Pompeii and Herculaneum. By late night or early morning, pyroclastic flows (fast-moving hot ash, lava fragments, and gases) swept through and obliterated what remained, leaving the bodies of the victims frozen in seeming suspended action.

The deadly eruption of Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire has affected more than 1.7 million people and created havoc in surrounding municipalities, sending thousands of people fleeing for their lives through streets buried in ash.
As least seven people have been confirmed as killed so far – including two children who were burned to death while standing on a bridge watching the eruption unfold – and dozens have been injured, as the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) continues rescue efforts to locate those reported missing.
Most affected by the massive fall of volcanic ash were the municipalities of Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, Conred spokesman David de León said. A change of wind caused ash to descend on the capital, Guatemala City, before proceeding to eastern and northern regions of the country.
After the Volcan de Fuego discharged ash more than 10,000 meters into the air, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation was forced to suspend all incoming and outgoing flights to the La Aurora International Airport, to “guarantee the safety of passengers and aircraft.”

The army has been mobilized to support the evacuation of people affected by volcanic lava in the villages of El Rodeo, El Porvenir, Los Lotes and El Zapote. The General Directorate of Road Safety and Protection is also assisting the rescue efforts. So far, more than 3,100 people have been evacuated.

The village of El Rodeo has suffered the worst, after lava and ash reached the village. Emergency services are now treating the injuries mainly suffered from burns caused by pyroclastic flows. A number of people there also remain missing, after a river of lava overflowed its banks at the village. Cars were also swallowed up in the strong torrents.

A number of houses have been affected in the natural disaster. Authorities, meanwhile, have confirmed damage to two electrical networks and one bridge.
While President Jimmy Morales said a national emergency response in underway, people are advised to wear masks due to falling ash, to take precautions and to evacuate to safe areas if instructed by authorities. Locals are also advised to avoid river banks and to cover food and containers where water is stored for human consumption. After the eruption has finished, authorities urge the locals to clean the roofs of houses.

Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano has experts paying attention and asking those in proximity to the eruption to be prepared. On Tuesday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) raised its alert level to “red,” indicating that “Major volcanic eruption is imminent, underway, or suspected with hazardous activity both on the ground and in the air.”
Still, at Volcano Golf and Country Club, some ambitious golfers found the time to sneak in a few holes as ash flung into the air behind them, leading to some stunningly asynchronous images captured by Mario Tama for Getty Images. You can take a look at the wild scene below.

Over the last 24 hours, Heather Nauert has unleashed a massive anti-Russian campaign on Twitter: Blaming Russia for civilian casualties in Syria; praising the controversial Oscar-winning ‘Icarus’ documentary for exposing Putin’s “disregard for international rules”; and glorifying Ukraine for its sacrifice to “ensure reliable gas delivery to European customers” in the face of Gazprom aggression.
While anti-Russian rhetoric coming out of Washington is nothing new, the latest Twitter spasm has raised eyebrows at the Russian embassy in the US.“We always assumed that Heather Nauert closely follows events in the world and inside the State Department. However, in the last couple of days, something seems to have broken in her department,” the embassy said, in a statement to RT.
“We hear a stream of ‘fake news’ – about Russia’s atrocities against the peaceful population of East Ghouta, about the gas ‘heroism’ of [Ukrainian President] Poroshenko, and sincere joy over the Oscar award to the story about the inventor of an alcohol doping-cocktail.”
The embassy has been particularly concerned by the “disinformation” surrounding a possible meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his US counterpart Rex Tillerson.
“Our relationship with Russia is not at a point where it looks like it is going to be normalized anytime soon,” Nauert said on Tuesday, during a press briefing, claiming that Tillerson never received an invitation from Russian officials to meet with Lavrov during his five-day tour in Africa this week, during which both officials will be in Ethiopia at the same time on March 9.

The Russian Embassy argued that Moscow had sent a request for a possible meeting to the State Department on March 2. In its statement to RT, the embassy emphasized that this would be a great opportunity to discuss a range of accumulated issues on regional and global agenda “not through the press, but directly.”
“In any case, we congratulate Nauert and, of course, all female employees of the State Department on International Women’s Day!” the embassy cheerfully added.
