All eyes will be on First Lady Melania Trump as she headlines Night 2 of the 2020 Republican National Convention.

Four years ago, the wife of then-candidate Donald Trump closed out Night 1 of the RNC with remarks that were partly cribbed from the speech that Michelle Obama delivered at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. The following day, Tony Award winner Laura Benanti went viral when she made her first appearance as Melania on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and offered a written apology with even more borrowed lines.

FLOTUS is among 15 of President Trump’s most vocal crusaders who are scheduled to address the nation on Tuesday night. The list also includes her stepchildren, Eric and Tiffany Trump, as well as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.

As previously reported, President Trump will appear nightly to “present his optimistic vision for the next four years,” according to the RNC. “The celebration will culminate in the historic renomination of the president and vice president in Washington, D.C.”

A few additional RNC speakers are sure to turn heads. Among them is Nicholas Sandmann, the Covington Catholic High School student who made headlines in early 2019 when a confrontation with Native American activist Nathan Phillips went viral. The full list is below:

* Former Attorney General Pam Bondi of Florida
* Attorney General Daniel Cameron of Kentucky
* Abby Johnson (anti-abortion activist)
* Jason Joyce (Maine lobsterman)
* Myron Lizer (VP of the Navajo Nation)
* Mary Ann Mendoza (We Build the Wall consultant)
* Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez of Florida
* Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky
* John Peterson (owner of Schuette Metals in Rothschild, Wis.)
* Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
* Gov. Kim Reynolds of Iowa
* Nicholas Sandmann (Covington Catholic High School student)
* Eric Trump
* First Lady Melania Trump
* Tiffany Trump

A Million Little Things Recap: Maggie Finally Learns the Truth About Eric https://briefnews.eu/a-million-little-things-recap-maggie-finally-learns-the-truth-about-eric/ https://briefnews.eu/a-million-little-things-recap-maggie-finally-learns-the-truth-about-eric/#respond Fri, 07 Feb 2020 06:04:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-million-little-things-recap-maggie-finally-learns-the-truth-about-eric/

RELATED STORIES

Two events that desperately need to happen do happen in this week’s A Million Little Things, and both come as a gigantic relief.

The first: Gary visits his mom, realizes that she’s not the monster he imagined (though she’s still kind of a garbage person), remembers that he’s been a Bitter Betty about everyone/everything lately and starts to make nice with Maggie.

The second: Maggie finds out that Eric doesn’t actually have her brother’s heart beating in his chest. And that scenario unfolds as you might guess it would.

Plus, Marcia Gay Harden and Sutton Foster guest-star, and Rome eats a cocktail shrimp in the most amazingly baller way ever. Read on for the highlights of “Guilty.”

HAVE YOU NO HEART? | Let’s deal with Maggie’s crisis first. When Eric won’t answer her calls, Mags stops by his apartment and realizes that he’s in the process of moving… and hadn’t told her. He talks about how he wants a fresh start, and that moving out of the place he shared with Chloe would be a good first step. He also tells her about the lawsuit Gary discovered in the last episode: Chloe’s parents are suing him, blaming him for her death.

A chagrined Maggie apologizes for kissing him, explaining that it’s complicated to have feelings for someone who’s in possession of your loved one’s vital organ. Still, she maintains, it felt like they had a connection. “Am I wrong? Is it just me?” she wonders, but Eric sadly says no: He felt something, too.

That’s when Maggie, who’s been wandering around the apartment in her nervousness, notices a framed photo of him, shirtless, taken on New Year’s Eve 2017. “Where’s your scar?” she asks, looking at him as though she’s never seen him before. Eric tries to explain, but Maggie doesn’t want to hear it. She leaves in haste.

A-Million-Little-Things-Recap-SEason-2-Episode-13-guiltyERIC’S ADMISSION | Eric makes a beeline to Maggie’s apartment, but she won’t open the door for him. So he stands outside and tells her the truth. Yes, Chloe (the aforementioned and delightful Foster) was his fiancée, and yes, she was very badly injured in that motorcycle accident (which we saw via flashback at the top of the episode). But she didn’t die then. So Eric and Chloe were at the hospital the day Chad was brought in, but it was because they were waiting for a donor heart, which she sorely needed.

“The best day of my life was the worst day of yours,” he tells Maggie. And when the donor network contacted Chloe, Eric got the letter and developed a kinship with Maggie’s mom. Or, as Maggie puts it, “So you lied to her.” They’re both crying on opposite sides of her door as he tells her that “my feelings for you, our connection, that was real.” Then he leaves.

HIT THE ROAD | Meanwhile, Gary has reached the “eating potato chops, lying on the couch and watching bad legal thriller movies” stage of his sulk. Eddie, Delilah, Rome and Regina all converge on his apartment in an impromptu intervention: Apparently, when he’s really low, he watches a film called Quincy’s Lie so he can yell at the actress who plays the jury foreman… and that actress just happens to be his mother, Alice. (Side note: Harden is doing some impressively bad acting on purpose in the movie-within-the-show, and it’s hilarious.)

Gary brushes off everyone’s concerns, but Delilah isn’t having it. “After a certain point, Gary, the problem isn’t everyone else. The problem is you,” she tells him, gently but firmly. It works. “You think I don’t know that?” he replies, more hurt than anything else. She points out that he might not want to talk to his mom, but he might need to — and oh, look at that, Alice is starring in a play in Brooklyn right now!

When D suggests a quick road trip to deal with Gary’s mommy issues, Rome is instantly on board: His producer friend, Jerry, stole his script and is getting it made into a movie, and Rome wants to chat with him about it real quick. On the way, Gary muses that he hasn’t seen his mother in person since she abandoned him when he was 7. And that bears out, because when he approaches her via the autograph line after her matinee, she doesn’t recognize him until he says his last name.

A-Million-Little-Things-Recap-SEason-2-Episode-13-guiltyALICE IS KINDA THE WORST | Gary and Alice retire to her dressing room, where she tries to explain how overwhelmed she felt as a 20-something new mom. He angrily asks why she never came back, but she says she did: She watched him play hockey with some friends and thought she would’ve wrecked his peace if she got out of the car, so she turned around and left. “I smiled with some friends, and that was enough to convince you I didn’t need you?” he says, incredulous. She apologizes and begs him to let her try again, perhaps starting with dinner after her evening performance? Gary reluctantly agrees.

But when a big producer shows up, Alice asks if Gary will take a raincheck so she can woo the bigwig into putting her show on Broadway. I can’t tell what’s more grotesquely selfish: the request, or the self-involved way she ignores how let-down her son is by her actions. P.S.: Your play isn’t the next Hamilton, lady! Gary leaves, and she barely notices.

A-Million-Little-Things-Recap-SEason-2-Episode-13-guiltyIn the car, Gary comes to terms with the fact that his mom was always awful, and it wasn’t his fault that she abandoned the family. Then he apologizes for treating Delilah & Co. so badly. He’s just about to get out and go into his apartment when Maggie calls D.

A THAWING? | But instead of Delilah, it’s Gary in the hallway when Maggie opens her apartment door. “How much did Delilah tell you?” she asks. “Enough,” he says, eyes soft. “I’m sorry.”

They chat a bit, and Gary says he’s sorry for being insensitive to her need for closure (see also: the whole megillah with the psychic). Then Maggie asks him to get dinner, but he backs off and says he can’t stay. He does add, however, that he could’ve handled himself better (“IN SO MANY WAYS,” I yell at my TV), then he leaves. After the door closes, though, he pauses in Mags’ hallway for a minute or two. That’s gotta mean something, right?

ROME’S REVENGE | Wondering what happens between Rome and Todd, the producer friend he’d shared his script with? Todd starts out denying that he stole the work from Rome — though he totally did — then winds up berating him for being an “ideas” guy who never actually gets things done. So based on something Rome overhears while in the producer’s waiting room, he crashes Todd’s dinner with the big-deal actor he’s wooing to star in the film.

A-Million-Little-Things-Recap-SEason-2-Episode-13-guiltyRome chows down on a cocktail shrimp plucked off their seafood tower as he explains what happened by adds that he doesn’t even mind, because Todd can’t really steal Rome’s story, because it’s Rome’s story. Later, the big-deal leading man (hi, Being Mary Jane‘s B.J. Britt!) calls Rome and says that he’s interested in the original version of the script — and that he just might want to produce the movie, as well.

And while everyone is off in New York, Regina has lunch with her mom to tell her about Rome and Regina’s decision to adopt. Her mom is uncharacteristically happy about it… until Regina starts talking about wanting to adopt a child that looks like her and Rome. The grandma-to-be takes offense at this, interpreting it as though she did a terrible job raising Regina, who admits that her mixed heritage meant she never felt like she fit in anywhere. Later, though, Regina’s mom apologizes for pretending race wasn’t an issue for her daughter, and they hug.

Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Sound off in the comments!

Little Mermaid Live!’s Graham Phillips Dives Deep Into Those Prince Eric Songs You’ve Probably Never Heard https://briefnews.eu/little-mermaid-lives-graham-phillips-dives-deep-into-those-prince-eric-songs-youve-probably-never-heard/ https://briefnews.eu/little-mermaid-lives-graham-phillips-dives-deep-into-those-prince-eric-songs-youve-probably-never-heard/#respond Wed, 06 Nov 2019 02:34:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/little-mermaid-lives-graham-phillips-dives-deep-into-those-prince-eric-songs-youve-probably-never-heard/

At the time of this publication, Graham Phillips — as The Little Mermaid Live!‘s Prince Eric — is belting out the final notes of “Her Voice,” an emotional ballad that establishes Eric as a multi-dimensional character, one who feels just as trapped in his own world as Ariel is in her’s. Beautiful as it may be, “Her Voice” isn’t exactly a household favorite, but that’s only because very few households have ever heard it before.

“It’s really exciting that I get to premiere a lot of these songs for people who haven’t gotten a chance to see the Broadway musical,” Phillips tells TVLine. “And it’s liberating that I get to explore a bit more of where Eric is coming from. If you watch the movie, you don’t really understand his perspective. It’s Ariel’s story, but like any good love story, there are always two sides of the coin. It’ll be nice for everyone to get a clearer sense of why Eric is so bonded with this girl that he’s only heard. A lot of stories are love at first sight, but this is love at first sound. He has some idea of what she looks like, but really, it’s the sound that drives his search. So it’s nice that I have a whole song, ‘Her Voice,’ that allows me and the audience to explore how much Eric is looking for Ariel.”

Of course, this is just one of several songs Eric sings in The Little Mermaid Live! that won’t necessarily be familiar to viewers. Later in the broadcast, he’ll join Auli’i Cravalho for a song called “If Only,” which was written as a quartet for the Broadway version (with Sebastian and King Triton), then converted to a duet for ABC’s live production.

“Getting to sing with her is awesome,” Phillips says. “Her voice is super expressive, and she has this uncanny ability to convey exactly what she’s feeling without broadcasting it. Everything just comes across really effortlessly, and there aren’t many people who can do that. Anyone can push an emotion out, but to get to sing with someone who has such an honesty in her voice is contagious, because I try to meet her at that level.”

Working on The Little Mermaid Live! has felt “like a homecoming” for Phillips, who performed in musicals and operas long before landing the role of Julianna Margulies and Chris Noth’s son on CBS’ The Good Wife. “The theater is my home,” he says. “Getting to return to my roots after a decade-long hiatus — between The Good Wife and college and everything — is really nice.”

‘Bird Box’ Screenwriter Eric Heisserer on Building a Mysterious Post-Apocalypse and Working With Netflix [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/bird-box-screenwriter-eric-heisserer-on-building-a-mysterious-post-apocalypse-and-working-with-netflix-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/bird-box-screenwriter-eric-heisserer-on-building-a-mysterious-post-apocalypse-and-working-with-netflix-interview/#respond Fri, 21 Dec 2018 17:28:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bird-box-screenwriter-eric-heisserer-on-building-a-mysterious-post-apocalypse-and-working-with-netflix-interview/ bird box early buzz

Bird Box is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the exact cause of the apocalypse is never shown. Something out there causes people to kill themselves when they look at it, and much of the world commits suicide in the first days. Malorie (Sandra Bullock) ends up in a stranger’s house where a group of survivors covers the windows, and the audience never sees the monstrous forces in Bird Box.

Screenwriter Eric Heisserer adapted Bird Box from the novel by Josh Malerman. He previously adapted Arrival from Ted Chiang’s story The Story Of Your Life (and received an Oscar nomination), and made his directorial debut with his original script Hours, starring Paul Walker.

Heisserer spoke with /Film about adapting Bird Box, some of his upcoming screenplays, and his memories of Walker. Bird Box is available to stream on Netflix right now.

Hours is very well represented in the documentary I Am Paul Walker.

Fantastic. I was unavailable during the production side of that thing but I gave them as many resources as I could.

Oh, I wasn’t questioning why you weren’t interviewed but I was glad they acknowledged what a turning point that would have been for him.

At the press event for that, he told me about all the amazing job offers that he’d gotten based on people that had seen the screening. He was like, “I’m finally in the direction I want to go.”

So Bird Box falls into my favorite genre of post-apocalyptic survival. Is it one of yours too?

Absolutely. The novel certainly is. I was just trying to do it justice.

Each of these are unique because whatever the apocalypse is, people have to adapt to the new world. Are there infinite possibilities depending on the cause of each apocalypse?

Certainly that could be explored. What I liked about the novel and what I tried to represent in the adaptation was that the biggest hurdle for us, the cause of the apocalypse is really our need to know. Our innate curiosity as humans, our struggle to understand why or who or what, that is of course our demise in this. The moment we surrender to decide to see what it is, then we failed.

Was a lot of the coping mechanisms – hanging strings, covering the windows, going out blindfolded – dictated by the book?

Some of it was and some of it I came up with as a cinematic expression of that. The coiled string that Malorie uses.

What are some differences between the world of the book and the world of the film?

They’re going to bleed through in my brain because I started on that in July of 2013, nine months before the book actually got published because I was given early galleys of it. I started a pretty strong working relationship with the author where I would start pitching him ideas. Every now and then he would say, “That should go in the book. Is that all right?” I’d be like, “Well, take it.” We had a pretty strong relationship that led into not only the publication of the book, but developing the script.

My favorite part of this genre is when they go looking for supplies. So was the supermarket scene in the book?

Yeah, with the vampire car.

Were you able to elaborate on it?

Sure, that was an idea of mine that Josh Malerman found really evocative when we walked through how to be as smart as possible with that. Even down to making sure that someone taped over the rearview camera for instance. It harkened back to one of my favorite moments in The Hunt For Red October. There’s a Russian navigator in the Red October who talks about how if you gave him a stopwatch and a map of the Grand Canyon, he could fly a plane with no windows through it. That’s essentially what we did with the car here where they had to rely entirely on GPS.

Is the entity ever described in the book?

No. There was a moment in the screenplay where we decided to try and have our cake and eat it too in which Malorie is confronted in sort of a home invasion by one of the creatures and she sees it. Then she wakes up and we realize it’s a nightmare. It’s about what people imagine it is.

Does that go back to what was made most famous in Jaws, that what you imagine is scarier than anything you can describe or show?

Right, that’s the corner we painted ourselves into. We realized the moment that one of us started talking about even small features of what the monster might be, or the antagonist, down to a specific silhouette of a shadow or an appendage that entered the frame somewhere, there was always someone else in the room who would say, “Well, that isn’t scary to me.” So it defeated the purpose. We kept pulling back.

Did the book come with a clear set of rules for how this thing works?

Not inasmuch, no, because it’s kept confined to the POV of the characters involved. They have very limited information. Now and then, from maybe some isolated radio DJ you’d get a little bit more about the world and the rules. Again, that was filtered information from one person so you didn’t know if you could trust it. It allowed everybody to come up with their own belief system or their own theory about what the unknown is.

Did you come up with a bible of the rules?

Yeah, I had to do a fairly deep dive on that. It’s interesting writing a lot of supplementary information that doesn’t necessarily go into the script but is just there as reference.

Are there any cool reference materials that didn’t make it into the film?

Well, there was a character who didn’t make it into the final cut. He was an older man, Edgar. He was also in an early version of the novel that got pulled from the novel, and I thought maybe he would survive through the film as well. He showed up at the same time as Olympia. He acted as if he had encountered one of these already. He seemed a little unstable but he didn’t seem crazy. The fun reveal we had later on was that he has early onset Alzheimer’s so he had forgotten what the thing looked like, which saved his life.

Did you get some of the graphic ways people kill themselves from the book, or invent some of your own?

Some of that was new to me even. Obviously things change during shooting so they came up with some other ideas during production. I would say I tried to base as much of my script on the novel as possible because I think that was the space where Josh Malerman was particularly horrific. Especially in the double childbirth scene.

You’ve been a studio screenwriter. Was working for Netflix the same as doing films for Warner Bros., New Line and Universal?

No. It seemed like Netflix is fairly hands off. I didn’t get to experience much of that because so much of the script had been developed under Universal that by the time Netflix acquired it, they were going to go off and shoot it. Even then, I will say Netflix seemed to want it simply because they didn’t want to mess with it.

bird box review

Did Sandra Bullock have some good ideas when she came on?

Yes, definitely about her character, about Malorie and her motives. I feel like she had some personal experiences to draw upon that made it emotionally resonant for her. It was my job just to reinterpret that character for her. I think it made it better. Her performance is amazing.

Was the structure of present day and five years earlier in the book that way?

It was definitely there. My job was just to try and link those two timelines as much as possible in terms of transitions.

Did you write the Van Helsing script for Dark Universe or was that only announced?

I did that several years ago, yes.

Since we’ll probably never see it now, what was your take on Van Helsing?

Oh, man. I want to talk about it and yet I hope that maybe someday someone will come in there and excavate it and be able to do some version of it. Rather than jinx it, I’m going to hold off.

Is there any movement on Lights Out 2?

There is a little but until someone’s deal is closed I can’t talk about that either.

So you haven’t started writing.

Oh, no, I have a finished draft. I feel like that script is better than Lights Out, the first movie, in a lot of ways. I’m really proud of it.

Where were you able to go with a sequel?

I expanded.

Is Bloodshot your next film in production?

Let’s see. They’re aiming for February 2020 release date on that. I don’t know if anything’s going to sneak in before then. So probably. That was an assignment and I think I was the second write on. Jeff Wadlow did a lot of heavy lifting earlier on. I came in and stuck with it for quite a while. It’s based on the Valiant comic book title.

What else are you working on?

Oh my goodness. I’m developing two pilots right now. I’m hoping to hear today on one of them. Of course, I’m now in a more producorial role. I’ve partnered up with Lawrence Grey and we’re producing projects together. I’m still working on the Your Name adaptation, the anime adaptation for Bad Robot and Paramount. I have two other features that I’ve written that are currently top secret that I wish I could talk about.

Would you direct either of the pilots?

Not the pilots but I’m really gearing to direct at least one or two of the episodes during the season.

Is the Your Name adaptation a tough one to crack?

Oh sure, but I love that movie. I’ve found it an interesting challenge what the Japanese rights holders wanted in an adaptation.

What are they asking for?

You have to find the best iteration of that story based on the fact that they want an American live-action version of the film. They stated if they wanted a Japanese live-action version, they would just do it themselves. But they want to see it through the lens of a western viewpoint.

And the hubub over the Ghost in the Shell movie didn’t scare them off from Americanizing it?

Well, I think I was one of 20 or 30 people that pitched them a version of the adaptation. So they had a lot of choices. I can say that mine was not a Ghost in the Shell-like version.

Decorated Olympian Éric Bédard named Canadian men's short track coach https://briefnews.eu/decorated-olympian-eric-be%e2%80%8bdard-named-canadian-mens-short-track-coach/ https://briefnews.eu/decorated-olympian-eric-be%e2%80%8bdard-named-canadian-mens-short-track-coach/#respond Wed, 01 Aug 2018 19:03:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/decorated-olympian-eric-be%e2%80%8bdard-named-canadian-mens-short-track-coach/

The success of Samuel Girard and his Canadian short track teammates at the Winter Olympics earlier this year has fueled former Canadian speed skater Éric Bédard's excitement of overseeing the men's squad.

On Wednesday, Speed Skating Canada announced the appointment of the three-time Olympian as national head coach, effective Aug. 13.

"We saw the great potential that this team has with Samuel Girard and his gold medal in the 1,000 [metres], his two fourth-place finishes and with the relay team that came back from Pyeonchang [South Korea] with a bronze medal," Bédard said in a prepared statement.

The 21-year-old feels the pressure of nation heading into his first Olympic Games 0:59

"My work will be to ensure the continued progress of this team, but also the next generation [of athletes] to continue Canada's tradition of excellence in short track moving towards the 2022 Games and beyond."

To have the opportunity to coach the best speed skaters in the world is something that makes me quite proud.— Canadian national men's team coach Eric Bedard

Bédard had served as manager of the short track high performance programs at Calgary's Olympic Oval since 2015 while doubling the past two years as high performance director at the Ontario Speed Skating Association.

The native of Saint-Thècle, Que., won four medals over three Olympics: gold in men's relay and bronze in the 1,000 at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan, relay gold in 2002 at Salt Lake City, Utah, and relay silver four years later in Turin, Italy.

International experience

"To come back to the Maurice Richard Arena and Montreal after so many years of being away following my retirement in 2006 is very special," said Bédard, a 2008 Speed Skating Canada Hall of Fame inductee. "I remember my beginnings in Saint-Thècle … and now to have the opportunity to coach the best speed skaters in the world is something that makes me quite proud."

Bédard, 41, is excited to contribute to the success of Canada's athletes after guiding short track teams from Germany and Italy at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics in Vancouver and Sochi, Russia, respectively.

He was also head coach of the French team in early 2015 before returning to Canada.

"Eric brings a wealth of experience gained internationally to elevate our men's program to achieve podium performances at World Cups, world championships and Olympic Games," said Speed Skating Canada's chief sport officer Shawn Holman.

"This, coupled with his fire and passion that propelled him to his athletic success and continues in his coaching roles, will certainly make him a great addition to our team."

In 2004, Bédard was a Canadian Olympic Committee Hall of Fame inductee and seven years later was inducted into the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame.

  • The NYPD filed departmental charges against officer Daniel Pantaleo, local media outlets reported Saturday.
  • A case against his supervising NYPD sergeant, Sgt Kizzy Adonis, is still pending.
  • The charges come four years after 43-year-old Garner’s July 2014 death, which sparked protests about police treatment of black people.

The New York Police Department reportedly filed formal departmental charges against an officer who placed Staten Island man Eric Garner in a fatal chokehold.

The NYPD charged officer Daniel Pantaleo with violating department regulations, WABC reported Saturday.

“I’m a real actor now.”

That’s what Caitlin FitzGerald says she thought after her experience as a young actress filming Law & Order: SVU.

Though she’s now been a series regular on major television shows like Masters of Sex and UnREAL, FitzGerald and many others like her count SVU as one of their first small-screen credits. The NBC procedural has opened its seemingly endless revolving door to many of your favorite actors and actresses over its 19-season, 434-episode (and counting) run. Whether they’re a former star of Will & Grace, an Emmy-winning character actress or an aspiring actor looking for an opportunity to be seen, chances are they spent some time with the members of the Special Victims Unit.

Over the years, TVLine has interviewed many stars about their favorite roles and — no surprise — a host of them brought up their time on SVU. From the kind and welcoming nature of the cast to the awesome props, these memories meant a lot to these actors personally and professionally. Now, these are their stories.
