  • Turkish President RecepTayyip Erdogan promised to reveal the “naked truth” regarding journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s death on Tuesday.
  • “We are looking for justice here and this will be revealed in all its naked truth, not through some ordinary steps but in all its naked truth,” Erdogan added.
  • Several members of Erdogan’s ruling AK Party also vowed not to “allow a cover-up” of what really happened to Khashoggi inside the Istanbul consulate during his final moments.
  • Erdogan’s statement comes after Saudi Arabia officially admitted that Khashoggi died inside their consulate, claiming that he got into a “fistfight” which turned deadly.

Turkey will reveal entire truth about Khashoggi's death on Tuesday – Erdogan https://briefnews.eu/turkey-will-reveal-entire-truth-about-khashoggis-death-on-tuesday-erdogan/ https://briefnews.eu/turkey-will-reveal-entire-truth-about-khashoggis-death-on-tuesday-erdogan/#respond Sun, 21 Oct 2018 15:33:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/turkey-will-reveal-entire-truth-about-khashoggis-death-on-tuesday-erdogan/

Turkey will reveal the full truth surrounding the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Tuesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, according to AFP. The announcement comes just two days after Erdogan spoke with Saudi King Salman, where both agreed to continue cooperation with the investigation into the journalist’s death. On Saturday, Omer Celik, a spokesman for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), also stated that Ankara would “reveal whatever had happened” to Khashoggi, saying that “nobody should ever doubt about it.” Turkey previously stated that the journalist was killed by a Saudi assassination squad, while Saudi Arabia has said he died in a “fistfight” inside the consulate. Khashoggi, a Washington Post journalist who was critical of the Saudi royal family, was last seen on October 2 when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Bad news for golden Erdogan statue in Germany – first defaced, now gets removed (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/bad-news-for-golden-erdogan-statue-in-germany-first-defaced-now-gets-removed-video/ https://briefnews.eu/bad-news-for-golden-erdogan-statue-in-germany-first-defaced-now-gets-removed-video/#respond Wed, 29 Aug 2018 15:10:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bad-news-for-golden-erdogan-statue-in-germany-first-defaced-now-gets-removed-video/

Firefighters in the central German city of Wiesbaden removed a controversial golden statue of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan overnight. Local authorities said “security could no longer be guaranteed.”

Public broadcaster ZDF reported that police had to “protect” the statue from angry residents, as well as separating some Kurdish and Turkish Germans following a “fierce confrontation.”

Footage obtained by Ruptly shows at least two dozen police officers in protective gear walking from the statue towards a group of demonstrators in order to push them away from the square on Tuesday night. Firefighters then arrived to remove the statue using a crane and flatbed truck shortly after midnight.

Tensions between the president’s supporters and opponents had resulted in a “slightly aggressive atmosphere” throughout Tuesday, a police spokesperson told DPA news agency.

The four-foot edifice of Erdogan was erected in the city’s German Unity Square (Platz der Deutschen Einheit) on Monday as part of the Wiesbaden Biennale art festival. It was intended to stay in place until the end of the festival on September 2.

Crafted in a pose that resembles the famous statue of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein that was pulled down by US troops during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, organizers had hoped it would provoke public debate about this year’s festival theme of ‘bad news’.

But the debate erupted right on the surface of the statue. It was vandalized with profanity and male genitalia on the night of its erection, with graffiti saying “f*** Erdogan” and “Turkish Hitler.”

Erdogan represents a polarizing figure in Germany, which is home to at least 3 million people with Turkish roots. His crackdown on political opponents, civil servants, and journalists in the wake of 2016’s coup against his regime has garnered much criticism from European nations, including Germany.

After reaching a diplomatic low point with EU members in 2017, when Ankara accused both the Netherlands and Germany of “Nazi practices,” diplomatic relations have been moving towards normalization.

Erdogan is set to visit Berlin next month, where the agenda sets out a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, military honors, and an official state banquet.

Seafood diplomacy? Erdogan invites ‘dearest friend’ Putin to meet at fish restaurant https://briefnews.eu/seafood-diplomacy-erdogan-invites-dearest-friend-putin-to-meet-at-fish-restaurant/ https://briefnews.eu/seafood-diplomacy-erdogan-invites-dearest-friend-putin-to-meet-at-fish-restaurant/#respond Sat, 25 Aug 2018 00:27:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/seafood-diplomacy-erdogan-invites-dearest-friend-putin-to-meet-at-fish-restaurant/ Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan may soon be discussing the S-400 anti-air systems deal while eating fish or lobsters, as Putin has been reminded of an arrangement to meet at a certain Istanbul restaurant.

An invitation from Erdogan, delivered to Putin by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavusoglu on Friday, said: “Your dearest friend, Mr. Erdogan, has asked to convene his greetings and best wishes, he is hoping for your visit to Istanbul in the near future. You have an arrangement to go to a fish restaurant.” Cavusoglu was addressing the Russian leader at a high-profile meeting in Moscow.

The ‘fish restaurant’ story goes back all the way to the BRICS summit in July. Back then Putin reminded his Turkish counterpart that once Erdogan invited him to dine at a fish restaurant. When Erdogan stressed that the invitation still stands, the Russian president pointed out that the issue with meat exports to Turkey must first be sorted out.

It seems Erdogan took the hint: In late July Russia started meat exports to Turkey – so now he may actually deliver on the fish restaurant meeting too.

Relations between Russia and Turkey have been growing closer, which has seemingly angered Ankara’s longstanding ally, the US. Ankara and Washington ties are on downward spiral as they lock horns over Turkey’s decision to buy –ahead-of-schedule, even– Russian S-400 missile systems. Erdogan’s government is also adamant on pushing ahead with the purchase of American F-35 jets, which US lawmakers are trying to block, due to Ankara’s S-400 deal.

Earlier this week Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport revealed that Turkey will receive its first batch of S-400 air defense systems next year. Following the statement the State Department’s Heather Nauert noted that the US had already made it “very clear what could trigger sanctions for other countries and entities around the world,” if they go ahead with buying the Russian systems.

Talk Turkey: Erdogan suggests adding ‘T’ to BRICS https://briefnews.eu/talk-turkey-erdogan-suggests-adding-t-to-brics/ https://briefnews.eu/talk-turkey-erdogan-suggests-adding-t-to-brics/#respond Mon, 30 Jul 2018 08:54:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/talk-turkey-erdogan-suggests-adding-t-to-brics/ Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on leaders of BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) to allow Turkey’s accession to the group.

“We are in the G20 with five of those countries. I wish they would take the necessary steps to let us in and we could take our place in BRICS,” the Turkish president told the Hurriyet Daily News on the sidelines of the group’s forum in the South African city of Johannesburg. “If you take us in the name of the platform would become BRICST.”

According to Erdogan, the suggestion was warmly welcomed by the member states, especially by China. He reportedly said that the BRICS members had been considering adding other nations in the group.

“Especially China says that it stands in favor of enlargement. I have seen that they are considering involving other countries in this platform. They are not opposed to it,” Erdogan said, as quoted by the media.

Turkey was invited to the 10th annual meeting of the group of emerging economies, which took place on July 25-27, as the term chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The Turkish president attended the summit together with the country’s foreign minister, finance and treasury minister, defense minister, commerce minister, and the ruling Justice and Development Party.

The multinational grouping was founded in 2006 during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Initially, it was formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining the group in 2010. The current participants represent more than 40 percent of the world’s population and 25 percent of global GDP.

Erdogan warns US will lose a ‘strong & sincere ally’, accuses Trump of waging “psychological war” https://briefnews.eu/erdogan-warns-us-will-lose-a-strong-sincere-ally-accuses-trump-of-waging-psychological-war/ https://briefnews.eu/erdogan-warns-us-will-lose-a-strong-sincere-ally-accuses-trump-of-waging-psychological-war/#respond Sun, 29 Jul 2018 01:00:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/erdogan-warns-us-will-lose-a-strong-sincere-ally-accuses-trump-of-waging-psychological-war/ Turkey’s president has warned the US that it will lose a valuable ally unless it changes its approach to the case of an American held in Turkey on espionage charges. Washington is threatening Ankara with sanctions over the issue.

Talking to Turkish media about US threats of sanctions if Ankara doesn’t release Pastor Andrew Brunson, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said US president Donald Trump is waging a “psychological war,” the Daily Sabah reports.

Washington would lose a “strong and sincere ally” if the administration there does not change its attitude regarding Brunson, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, after Trump threatened to impose sanctions against its NATO ally.

Pastor Andrew Brunson, who has lived in Turkey for over twenty years, is currently being held on charges of supporting a group that Ankara says was behind the failed military coup in 2016. The pastor, who maintains his innocence, faces up to 35 years in jail if found guilty. While he was recently transferred to house arrest after being held in a Turkish prison for nearly two years, his trial on terror and espionage charges continues. The fate of the Evangelical pastor from North Carolina has been the subject of calls from President Donald Trump and US officials for his release.

After US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed the fate of the American pastor with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Çavuşoglu on Saturday, Erdoğan insisted that Brunson’s release was never used in a possible prisoner swap deal with Washington.

A day after Brunson’s custody was commuted from a prison term to house arrest, Trump threatened Ankara with sanctions. Threats of “significant sanctions” were also voiced by Vice President Mike Pence.

“The United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson, a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being. He is suffering greatly. This innocent man of faith should be released immediately!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“We will never tolerate threats from anybody,” Çavuşoglu replied in a post, before having a phone discussion with Pompeo.

No F-35s for Turkey: US Senate blocks sale of fighter jets to Ankara

Erdoğan’s government is also adamant on pushing ahead with the purchase of American F-35 jets, which US lawmakers are trying to block, over Turkey’s plans to buy S-400 surface-to-air missile systems from Russia. Ankara would seek justice by international arbitration if the US fails to deliver the fighter jets, Erdoğan noted.

Arms sales and the Brunson case aren’t the only points of contention between the US and Turkey. Ankara demands that the US hand over Fethullah Gulen, a prominent dissident cleric who currently resides in Pennsylvania. Turkey considers him and his followers to be terrorists, who tried to overthrow its government two years ago.

Turkey has also been resisting US pressure to stop importing Iranian crude, which the State Department has demanded from its allies, by November 4. Ankara believes that US foreign and economic policy decisions are not binding for Turkey, arguing that any Iranian sanctions must be conducted under the UN-mandated international law.

‘Such racist treatment for his religious beliefs is unacceptable’ – Erdogan wades in on Ozil affair https://briefnews.eu/such-racist-treatment-for-his-religious-beliefs-is-unacceptable-erdogan-wades-in-on-ozil-affair/ https://briefnews.eu/such-racist-treatment-for-his-religious-beliefs-is-unacceptable-erdogan-wades-in-on-ozil-affair/#respond Tue, 24 Jul 2018 12:09:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/such-racist-treatment-for-his-religious-beliefs-is-unacceptable-erdogan-wades-in-on-ozil-affair/ Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has hit out at the “unacceptable treatment” of Mesut Ozil, which he believes stems from prejudice towards the former Germany midfielder’s religious beliefs.

Ozil walked out on his international career after what he saw as “racism and disrespect” for his Turkish roots and claiming he had been made a scapegoat for the team’s World Cup failures after a meeting with Erdogan.

“Such racist treatment towards a young man who has given his all to the German national team for his religious beliefs is unacceptable,” Erdogan told reporters in parliament on Tuesday.

He said he spoke to Ozil on Monday night and described his approach as “beyond any form of admiration,” Reuters reported. He added that Ozil’s critics “could not stomach” the photograph of the football star and Erdogan that prompted criticism ahead of the World Cup.

The pair were photographed together in May, after which Ozil was called back from his holiday to explain his actions to German football association (DFB) bosses, which the player labeled a “patronizing” experience.

The DFB released a statement on Monday, admitting it had not done enough to protect the 29-year-old, and thanking him for his part in the country’s 2014 World Cup success in Brazil, although it rejected claims of racism.

“Mesut Özil played a key role in Germany lifting the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and so the DFB is and always will be incredibly grateful for his outstanding performances in Germany colours,” the statement read.

“We self-critically acknowledge that the DFB played a part in that when dealing with this issue. We also regret that Mesut Ozil – unlike Jerome Boateng – feels as if he wasn’t given enough protection when made the target of racist slogans.”

Erdogan aide tells congressman Adam Schiff to ‘shut up’ https://briefnews.eu/erdogan-aide-tells-congressman-adam-schiff-to-shut-up/ https://briefnews.eu/erdogan-aide-tells-congressman-adam-schiff-to-shut-up/#respond Tue, 26 Jun 2018 21:42:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/erdogan-aide-tells-congressman-adam-schiff-to-shut-up/ Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman has sharply rebuked Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff who bemoaned Turkey’s “descent into autocracy” after Erdogan’s presidential election win.

“Erdogan ‘won’ reelection in Turkey this weekend only by decimating the opposition through arrests, violence and squashing freedom of the press. Turkey’s descent into autocracy is another reminder that democracy is under assault worldwide,” Schiff tweeted on Monday.

,

Schiff followed this up with the all-caps warning “DO NOT CONGRATULATE.” This part was likely a dig at president Trump, as the White House is currently working to set up a call between Trump and Erdogan to “reaffirm our strong bond,” Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday.

Schiff’s Twitter feed is a stream of anti-Trump sound bites, delivered multiple times daily. The California Congressman regularly blames ‘Russian trolls’ for his country’s misfortune, and blasts the President for his foreign policy dealings with China and North Korea.

Ibrahim Kalin, President Erdogan’s adviser and spokesman, fired back at Schiff, telling him that the Turkish electorate had spoken, and that he should “shut up.”

Kalin’s slap drew cheers from his supporters on Twitter and, back in the US, Schiff’s comment drew a mixed reaction. “You have to respect Turkish people’s choice,” read a reply from Bilal Kenasari, a journalist with Turkey’s Andalou press agency.

Erdogan was re-elected as president on Sunday, winning 53 percent of the vote. Erdogan now faces into a further five years in power, while his AK party and its allies secured a parliamentary majority.

Sunday’s polls are the first since Turkey switched to a presidential system of governance after an April 2017 constitutional referendum. The plebiscite effectively split Turkish society in half, as the amendment package passed by a close margin, securing 52 percent of the vote.

The victory allows Erdogan to further consolidate political power and implement constitutional reforms. The powers in question include the abilities to pick cabinet ministers from outside of the legislature, pass laws by decree, single-handedly declare a state of emergency and launch extraordinary elections. The post of the prime minister is also set to be abolished.

While opposition leaders see Erdogan’s reforms as a power-grab, Erdogan sees them as the will of the people.

“Turkey is staging a democratic revolution,” he said. “With the presidential system, Turkey is seriously raising the bar, rising above the level of contemporary civilizations.”

Just days into Erdogan’s first term under Turkey’s new presidential system, Turkish authorities ordered the detention of 132 people, in a nationwide crackdown targeting supporters of a failed 2016 coup against the President. According to the UN, Turkey has jailed 160,000 people since the coup attempt.
