Nine minutes. That’s about how long the wait time is for Queen Latifah to start beating down bad guys in CBS’ reboot of The Equalizer. And boy, is it worth the wait.

The pilot episode premiered Sunday following the Super Bowl, and stars Latifah as Robyn McCall, a newly retired CIA operative who is trying to settle into a quiet life of motherhood and school drop-offs. She almost gets her wish until an old handler and mentor named Bishop (Chris Noth) asks to meet up at the Coney Island Wonder Wheel to talk about what turns out to be her surreptitious resignation.

Equalizer Recap

The last mission broke her, Robyn says at their clandestine nighttime meeting, despite Bishop’s message from “The Company” that she can still come back. Bishop even says Robyn can come and work for him, at his private security firm. “When I can’t sleep at night, it’s not the things that I’ve done that keep me up,” a determined Robyn says as she turns down all of Bishop’s offers. “It’s the people I couldn’t save.” And with that, Robyn stays behind to stare into the darkness and ponder about her choices after Bishop leaves.

It’s a good thing she does, too, because that’s when Robyn spots a young woman and a shady-looking dude squeeze through a chain link fence to sneak into the amusement park. Robyn, the mother of a teenage girl around the same age, worries about the underage stranger and follows the two. (As viewers previously learned, the girl, whose name is Jewel, witnessed a murder that she has now been framed for and is meeting with some underworld types to buy a fake ID and passport so she can go on the lam.)

Robyn knows none of this yet but her Spidey senses are still telling her to check things out just in case. See, underworld types don’t play by the rules, and instead of selling the girl the fake documents, the baddie takes her money and decides he and his three friends will rape her first. That is, until Robyn shows up and spoils their sick plan.

Straight out of Central Casting, the Russian-accented head goon tells Robyn to mind her own business. “I’ll tell you, I’ve tried,” Robyn says, inching closer to the goon and channeling her inner Liam Neeson, lowered voice, narrowed eyes and all. “But it turns out, I’m really bad at it. But there are other things I’m real good at. So, why don’t you let that girl go, and I’ll let you walk out of here.”

The goon and his slimy pals laugh at Robyn’s words and pull out their guns — but before they can pull triggers, she disarms the head goon and shoots the others with his gun. Two of them stand up to fight her with a hammer and a wrench, but she beats them up with their own tools to the beat of a fast-tempo rap song. (This is especially cool because Latifah recently told reporters that the musician in her fights villains on the show to a song in her head, and she knows she has to knock them out by the time the hook drops.)

As fans of the original 1980s The Equalizer will tell you, Edward Woodward was a cool old dude, but he couldn’t fight to a drum beat. Utilizing what looks like a fighting style called Wing Chun, Latifah proves she doesn’t have to be muscle-bound to obliterate thugs. She also doesn’t have to be Denzel Washington in the movie versions of The Equalizer.  Or a man at all. Latifah, who clearly knows how to fight, just has to be faster and more skilled than the other guys.

Equalizer RecapThe beatdown also allows Robyn to realize her life’s mission and the purpose of the show — to save people in need who can’t turn to the police. Although there is one cop that is better than the rest (played by actor Tory Kittles), Robyn knows she has to prove Jewel’s innocence first. To keep tensions high on the action drama, Robyn also has to save Jewel more than once and rely on her savvy sidekicks (played by Liza Lapira and Adam Goldberg) from her CIA days. Bishop even lends an assist, but not before another set of villainous thugs douse Robyn’s hair while waterboarding her. Throwing water on a Black woman’s head? Oh, you’re going to die.

Because, make no mistake about it, Robyn is a Black woman in an America with its first Black and South Asian Vice President and a Black woman named Stacey Abrams who helped turn Georgia blue. A Black woman can also equalize all kinds of criminals, play darts and lean on her aunt (played by the incomparable Lorraine Toussaint) to help her raise her unruly daughter. We can’t wait for the PTO to get a load of this mother.

Equalizer Reboot With Queen Latifah in Title Role Gets CBS Pilot Order https://briefnews.eu/equalizer-reboot-with-queen-latifah-in-title-role-gets-cbs-pilot-order/ https://briefnews.eu/equalizer-reboot-with-queen-latifah-in-title-role-gets-cbs-pilot-order/#respond Tue, 28 Jan 2020 12:46:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/equalizer-reboot-with-queen-latifah-in-title-role-gets-cbs-pilot-order/

After hitting the big screen, The Equalizer is headed back to TV: CBS has officially handed a pilot order to a reboot of the late-’80s crime drama, now starring Queen Latifah in the title role, TVLine has learned.

The original series ran on CBS from 1985 to 1989 and starred Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a former covert operations officer who tried to atone for his past sins by offering, usually free of charge, his services as a troubleshooter, protector and investigator (or what we now simply call a “fixer”).

This “reimagining” of the classic series stars Queen Latifah as “an enigmatic figure who uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn.” Castle executive producers Andrew Marlowe and Terri Miller will pen the pilot, and original series co-creator Richard Lindheim is also onboard as an EP. (The reboot was first announced back in November.)

Queen Latifah’s previous TV credits include Star, Single Ladies, Living Single and, most recently, ABC’s The Little Mermaid Live, in the role of Ursula.

The original Equalizer series eventually — and we do mean eventually — spawned a big-screen adaptation in 2014, starring Denzel Washington, as well as the 2018 sequel you are probably first hearing about now, The Equalizer 2.

‘The Conjuring’ Spin-Off ‘The Nun’ Pushed Back, ‘The Equalizer 2’ Bumped Up https://briefnews.eu/the-conjuring-spin-off-the-nun-pushed-back-the-equalizer-2-bumped-up/ https://briefnews.eu/the-conjuring-spin-off-the-nun-pushed-back-the-equalizer-2-bumped-up/#respond Wed, 14 Feb 2018 19:06:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-conjuring-spin-off-the-nun-pushed-back-the-equalizer-2-bumped-up/ the nun release date

Several Warner Bros. and Sony release dates for upcoming 2018 films are being shuffled around ahead of the summer season.

Warner Bros. is pushing back The Conjuring spin-off The Nun, while Sony is moving up the release for Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer sequel.

Warner Bros. Shifts The Nun Release Date

Warner Bros. is moving New Line’s The Nun from its July 13, 2018 release date to September 7, 2018. The film stars Demian Bichir as a priest and Taissa Farmiga as a novice nun who are sent by the Vatican to investigate the suicide of a nun in Romania. There, they confront the demonic nun that terrorized the characters in The Conjuring 2. Like the Annabelle spin-off movies, The Nun will be a prequel to the Conjuring films, set decades before the events of the core movies. This spin-off is directed by Corin Hardy, following up his feature debut The Hallow.

This is an interesting change for the hugely successful horror series, which saw three out of its four previous releases open in the summer to huge success. So it’s possible that this shift to a Fall release date is not out of financial concern, but speaks to a strategy change. After all, a horror movie doesn’t necessarily need the summer movie season to be a big hit, which cannot be said for all major releases.

Current September movie releases that The Nun will go up against include Shane Black’s The Predator and Robin Hood: Origins.

Sony Bumps Up The Equalizer 2

Meanwhile, Sony has moved several release dates, including The Equalizer 2 and Paul, Apostle of Christ.

Denzel Washington returns in the Antoine Fuqua-directed sequel to The Equalizer, originally slated for August 3, 2018, now bumped up to a July 20, 2018 release date. Though that mid-summer release date seems like a vote of confidence for the action thriller, the only competition that The Equalizer 2 will have on July 20 is Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which caters to a markedly different demographic. Sony seems to be taking advantage of the fact that Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel was pushed back from its original July 20 date to December.

The shift for Paul, Apostle of Christ is much smaller, moving the film from March 28 to March 23, 2018 — though much closer to Easter Sunday. The Jim Caviezel-starring religious film will be good counter-programming to Pacific Rim: Uprising, Isle of Dogs, and Sherlock Gnomes, all of which open on March 23.

Syria keep Russia 2018 dream alive with dramatic late equalizer to earn playoff place https://briefnews.eu/syria-keep-russia-2018-dream-alive-with-dramatic-late-equalizer-to-earn-playoff-place/ https://briefnews.eu/syria-keep-russia-2018-dream-alive-with-dramatic-late-equalizer-to-earn-playoff-place/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2017 18:07:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/syria-keep-russia-2018-dream-alive-with-dramatic-late-equalizer-to-earn-playoff-place/

Syria, a nation mired by six years of a devastating civil war, clinched a 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia playoff place, courtesy of a dramatic 93rd-minute equalizer that earned a 2-2 draw against Iran in Tehran.

Striker Omar Al Somah netted a stoppage time leveler to ensure the war-torn nation grabbed 3rd place in their Asia World Cup qualifying Group A and therefore a playoff place for next summer’s tournament.

In the final qualifying match, Syria had been trailing hosts Iran 2-1 despite going 1-0 ahead by virtue of a Tamer Haj Mohamad goal, the midfielder poking home after a free kick was spilled by the Iranian keeper, Beiranvand.

Then two goals either side of halftime from Sardar Azmoun, who plays his club football in Russia for Rubin Kazan, canceled out Haj Mohamad’s goal and returned advantage to the home side.

As the game wore on, it looked as though Syria would fall agonizingly short of a chance of World Cup qualification, an improbable dream for the troubled Arab republic.

That was until the third minute of stoppage time, when Syria surged forward with Mardik Mardikian, who played the ball through to Al Somah on the right side of the penalty area.

From a tight angle, the Syria No. 9 squeezed the ball through the legs of Beiranvand. The ball hit the back of the net. Al Somah wheeled away to celebrate.

As Al Somah sank to his knees, his teammates rushed onto the field from the bench to join him in celebration of the goal, which symbolized a catharsis for a country still very much suffering the harrowing effects of a conflict that has raged since 2011.

Football fans around the world reacted in unanimous celebration for the Syrian side, who had defeated the odds to keep their Russia 2018 dream alive for at least a little longer.

The achievement is made even more remarkable by the fact the conflict in their home country has prevented the team from playing any home games on home soil since 2010, so they have instead taken place in Malaysia – 7,000 kilometers away.

Syria gained third spot on goal difference at the expense of Uzbekistan, who were held to a 0-0 draw against the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in Tashkent. Although both finished with 13 points, Syria’s goal difference was two ahead of Uzbekistan’s.

Sequel Bits: ‘The Equalizer 2,’ ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Avatar 2,’ ‘Terminator’ Sequels, and More https://briefnews.eu/sequel-bits-the-equalizer-2-blade-runner-2049-avatar-2-terminator-sequels-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/sequel-bits-the-equalizer-2-blade-runner-2049-avatar-2-terminator-sequels-and-more/#respond Sat, 02 Sep 2017 05:11:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sequel-bits-the-equalizer-2-blade-runner-2049-avatar-2-terminator-sequels-and-more/ sequel bits

In today’s edition of Sequel Bits:

  • Two stars from The Equalizer are confirmed for the sequel.
  • Info on when the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot starts shooting.
  • A new Blade Runner 2049 poster.
  • James Cameron talks about the Avatar sequels and the future of Terminator.
  • And more!

Equalizer

Denzel Washington is going up against Pedro Pascal (Narcos) in The Equalizer sequel. Perhaps Robert McCall (Washington) will receive a little assistance in his fight from Susan and Brian Plummer, his two friends from his old days in counter-terrorism. Melissa Leo and Bill Pullman, who are now confirmed to return for director Antoine Fuqua‘s sequel, played the couple. According to Deadline, they’ll soon begin work on the thriller, which starts shooting September 14 in Boston – where the first (awesome) movie was shot. Susan and Brian Plummer could’ve felt like an exposition dump with two characters filling the audience in on McCall, but two pros like Leo and Pullman made it natural. It was a pleasant pitstop in McCall’s surprisingly brutal journey.

Blade Runner poster

We’re almost only a month away from entering Los Angeles, 2049 with Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner sequel, which is apparently 2 hours and 43 minutes long. Up until now, the marketing has done a fine job playing things close to the vest. They haven’t revealed more than we need to know about the film, or so it seems. With more TV spots and clips on the way, that may change, but let’s hope not. A new poster has arrived for the film, featuring Officer K (Ryan Gosling), Deckard (Harrison Ford), Joi (Ana de Armas), and Neander Wallace (Jared Leto). It feels like a tastefully done floating heads poster, with the focus on the stars, not the world like the original Blade Runner poster.

avatar universe

A sci-fi sequel far, far away from hitting theaters, Avatar 2, is in “full-tilt production,” director James Cameron told Entertainment Weekly. The sequel comes out in December 2020, and by 2025, we’ll have four Avatar movies. It’s another ambitious undertaking by Cameron, who told EW about scouting in virtual sets:

Oh, we’re in production. We’re in full-tilt production. We’re in what we call ‘scouting,’ which basically is shooting for me. I’m on the stage all day long during the scouting process, because there are no sets or locations, other than in the virtual world, so I do all my location-scouting with a troop of actors that go through the virtual sets, and give me a sense of the scale and position, lighting, that sort of thing. Then, I’m in rehearsals with my principal cast and I start with them at the end of September.

terminator board game

If there’s one thing that’s disappointing about James Cameron spending almost nine years in Pandora, it’s that we won’t see him create another world with new characters anytime soon. He’s already spent the last five years on the sequels, and he has eight or more years of work. During that time, he might find the time for some Terminator sequels. If he’s going to produce more Terminator films, they’ll have to be “top-quality production and [have] really, really good ideas and characters,” he told SYFY.

If someone could help come up with a fresh approach to shock some life into the Terminator franchise, it’s probably Cameron.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Another reboot in the works that doesn’t feature machines sent from the future, or so we think, is coming from Kevin Smith. Smith is going to direct a Jay and Silent Bob Reboot next after finishing up his True North Trilogy. Like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the two buddy drug dealers will head to Hollywood in an attempt to stop a reboot of Bluntman & Chronic. Smith has called the reboot a silly satire poking fun at the film business’ re-do obsession, which I’m sure the writer and director will poke fun at himself for doing as well. He’ll begin shooting the comedy this fall, bringing the two stoner pals back after an 11-year break following Clerks II. The filmmaker, whose last few movies have been divisive to say the least, shared on Twitter he’ll begin filming the reboot before the year ends.

There’s a new droid in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, BB-9E. The pricey remote control toy for the character is already on sell in Australia, according to ScreenCrush. He’s not playing for the good team, though. BB-9E is employed by The First Order. How large of a role he plays in director Rian Johnson‘s sequel, we’ll have to wait and see. The remote control BB-9E is $ 150, but of course a Pop! version of the character is on the way with a far cheaper price tag.

BB-9E

Bulgarian footballer swigs beer thrown onto pitch, goes on to scores last-minute equalizer (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/bulgarian-footballer-swigs-beer-thrown-onto-pitch-goes-on-to-scores-last-minute-equalizer-video/ https://briefnews.eu/bulgarian-footballer-swigs-beer-thrown-onto-pitch-goes-on-to-scores-last-minute-equalizer-video/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2017 10:30:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bulgarian-footballer-swigs-beer-thrown-onto-pitch-goes-on-to-scores-last-minute-equalizer-video/

Some liquid refreshment of the alcoholic kind seemed to do this Bulgarian football player the world of good. After taking a swig from a can of beer thrown onto the pitch, he went on to score a last-minute equalizer.

Ivan Bandalovski, a defender for Vereya in the Bulgarian First League, took a swig from a can of beer hurled onto the pitch during his team’s game against Levski Sofia on the weekend.

The impromptu refueling break happened during the 29th minute of the match, which was briefly halted after fans hurled various objects onto the pitch.

The beer boost appeared to do Bandalovski good – he went on to score a 93rd-minute equalizer for his team.

Sadly for the 30-year-old defender, though, the team ultimately lost the game – which was for a spot in the Europa League – going down 9-8 on penalties.
