Dan Crenshaw had the last laugh when NBC’s Saturday Night Live invited the Navy SEAL-turned-Texas congressman to return fire against cast member Pete Davidson.

During a Weekend Update segment on the Nov. 4 SNL, Davidson offered his “first impressions” on several candidates running for office in the midterm election.

Referring to a picture of the eye-patched Crenshaw’, he said, “You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate in Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie.” Davidson then cemented his fate as a target for criticism and controversy by adding, “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war, or whatever. Whatever.”

Crenshaw earlier this week dismissed the dis, saying, “SEALs don’t get offended. That’s just not what we do. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t offensive, but let’s stop demanding apologies and firings of people. Let’s just… demand that comedy actually be funny, but let’s be good people.”

SNL‘s Weekend Update nonetheless handed him a forum to zing Davidson back, as seen below. Did he give better than he got?

After Sunday’s poorly attended ‘Unite the Right 2’ white nationalist rally, CNN host Chris Cuomo argued that violence perpetrated by Antifa, while wrong in the eyes of the law, was morally superior to the violence of “hate.”

In his closing monologue on Monday night, Cuomo delivered a criticism of all violence from those on both sides of the political spectrum but argued that the violence perpetrated by anti-fascist activists was at least morally superior to the “violence of hate” by the far-right.

“People who show up to fight against bigots are not to be judged the same as the bigots, even if they do resort to the same kinds of petty violence,” Cuomo argued.

The CNN host’s comments came one day after the rally in Washington, DC attracted approximately two dozen white nationalists, a fraction of last year’s turnout in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The 2017 rally resulted in several clashes between white nationalists and anti-fascist activists. Later in the day, one woman was killed and 19 people injured when a 20-year-old white nationalist plowed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters.

Cuomo described this year’s counter protest as generally peaceful, with masked members of Antifa “peppered in the crowd.” Some launched fireworks and bottles at police and attacked journalists. Others screamed abuse at the police.

Several journalists reported being attacked by Antifa. NBC News’ Cal Perry was called a “snitch a** news b*tch” by one protester, who attempted to smack Perry’s camera out of his hand.

While calling Antifa’s attacks on journalists and police “wrong,” Cuomo added a caveat that “all punches are not equal.”

Cuomo, whose brother is the Democrat governor of New York, framed the comments in the context of criticizing President Donald Trump for not calling out the “violence of hate” in the aftermath of last year’s rally. By doing so, the CNN host argued, Trump helped “elevate” the far-right.

“Fighting against hate matters, and how you fight against hate matters too,” he said. “But drawing a moral equivalency between those espousing hate and those fighting hate because they both resort to violence, emboldens hate… and elevates what should be stamped out.”

He finished with a warning to white nationalists: “Be aware there are many more of us who see you as unequal… because what you are about is wrong, and fighting you is right.”

Cuomo’s monologue has been mocked by some on Twitter as hypocrisy and moral relativism. “An #Antifa bat to the head feels just like any other bat to the head,” one commenter pointed out.

Responding to criticism, Cuomo doubled down, arguing that “violence is wrong but the motivation matters.”

In January, President Donald Trump announced an end to the temporary protected status of some 200,000 El Salvadorans who had been living and working legally in the U.S. since two powerful earthquakes killed hundreds in El Salvador in 2001. The decision reminded Americans of the small, troubled Central American country and what awaits those being forced to return to it.

In the Americas, only Haiti, Bolivia, Honduras and Guatemala are poorer than El Salvador, where more than a third of the population lives in poverty. And, in 2016, the nation of 6.4 million had more than 81 murders per 100,000 people — a total of nearly 5,200 deaths — making it the most violent country in the world that isn’t a war zone.

But there is one Salvadoran metric that has improved since those earthquakes hit 17 years ago — one that puts the country ahead of its giant northern neighbor. According to World Bank data from 2015 (the most recent available):

From 2000 to 2015, El Salvador reduced its income inequality by 20 percent — and now it has less disparity than the U.S.

Here’s how the numbers break down. In 2000, El Salvador had a Gini coefficient of .510, which is a measure of income inequality (0 means everyone has the same amount of wealth, while 1 means one person owns everything, and everybody else owns zip). By 2015, though, that number had dropped to .408 — meaning inequality had decreased 20 percent in 15 years. In Latin America, only Argentina and Bolivia had greater reductions in income inequality. And for the U.S.? By 2015, its Gini coefficient had risen to .415, from a .404 in 2000, making it more unequal than El Salvador.

“There have been small moves in the right direction, but the feeling is that those can be moved backward,” says José Artiga, who fled to the U.S. in 1980 during the civil war and now works at the California-based SHARE, an NGO trying to increase the economic sustainability in his native land. Most people in El Salvador still live on the edge. Americans might be conscious of inequality if they see their boss’ new Audi. In El Salvador, “what people put on the table would be a simple way of measuring,” says Artiga. As in, when was the last time a family had fresh fruit? Or someone might become aware of disparity when he or she needs medical care and can’t afford private treatment, he says.

El Salvador isn’t unique in the region for cutting inequality, according to Eduardo Ortiz-Juarez, a researcher at the Commitment to Equity Institute at Tulane University in New Orleans. Although Latin America remains the region with the greatest income disparity in the world, 16 of 18 countries have seen an increase in equality since 2000. On average, the region’s disparity declined by 1.07 percent annually from 2002 to 2015. El Salvador’s 1.6 percent decline during that time outpaced the average. This progress occurred even as inequality has increased in many countries around the world besides the U.S., including China and India.

When you are poor, your think your life is worth less. And you might want to get quick money. And then you end up with another problem: That’s violence.

The reasons behind this trend in Latin America are complicated. But a couple of factors seem to play a big role — and likely contribute to El Salvador’s improvements. According to Ortiz-Juarez, they boil down mostly to higher wages from a more educated workforce and more progressive government transfers of wealth to the poor. He’s crunched the numbers: On average, more than half of El Salvador’s reduction in its Gini coefficient is the result of changes in income, and around 21 percent is from government transfers. Remittances also surely play a role, as they represented a record 17.1 percent of El Salvador’s economy in 2016.

The Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front abandoned its leftist guerrilla roots and, in 1994, became a legitimate political party in El Salvador — one that has jockeyed with the rightist National Republican Alliance for control of the legislature since 2000. As with other countries in the leftist “pink tide” that swept the region, El Salvador has seen an increased focus on social programs, if not their efficient delivery. President Salvador Sánchez Cerén, a former guerrilla and teacher, prioritized education and subsidies to the poor when he entered office in 2014. To varying degrees, programs such as providing school meals and supplies have likely helped equality in the country, say experts.

Artiga notes other policies that produced “small changes in a good direction,” including increased salaries, improved medical care and redistributed land titles that people can use as collateral for mortgages.

It’s in everyone’s interest for El Salvador to continue on a path toward equality and prosperity, he explains. “When you are poor, you think your life is worth less. And you might want to get quick money. And then you end up with another problem: That’s violence.”

It’s pretty simple and potentially useful — if a little expensive — for times when you don’t have pockets. Just don’t expect to win any fashion contests with the Wrist Fit and AirPods on your arm. Hey, maybe we’re being too harsh though. After all, fanny packs are ugly as sin and they’re somehow making a comeback.

Canadian teenage swimmer Taylor Ruck matched the record for most medals won at a single Commonwealth Games by any athlete when she reached the podium for the eighth time in Australia on Tuesday.

The record-tying medal came in the women’s 4×100 medley relay on the final day of swimming events. Ruck, 17, anchored teammates Kylie Masse, Kierra Smith and Penny Oleksiak to the silver medal, setting a Canadian record of 3:55.10 in the process.

“I’m just so honoured to be able to win that many medals,” Ruck said. “This meet has been so much fun, and I’m so glad to finish it with these girls by my side.”

Ruck’s eighth podium finish moved her into a tie with four other swimmers: Canada’s Ralph Hutton (1966) and Australians Susie O’Neill (1998) and Emily Seebohm (2010). It also broke the 52-year-old single-Games record for Canada women she had briefly shared with Elaine Tanner.

Ruck, who was born in Kelowna, B.C., and lives in Arizona with her Canadian parents, will leave Australia’s Gold Coast with a gold, five silver and a pair of bronze. The gold came in the 200-metre freestyle, where she set both a Canadian and Commonwealth Games record in the final.

Ruck already owns a pair of Olympic relay medals from 2016 and is positioning herself as the Canadian swimmer to watch leading up to the 2020 Games. At the 2017 world junior championships she won six gold medals (including one individual, in the 200 free) and added a silver in the 100 backstroke. She also helped Canada win a pair of relay gold medals at the 2016 short-course worlds.

Medal count

Ruck and the relay team’s silver was one of seven medals won by Canada on Day 6 of competition. The Canadian team now has 44, trailing only host Australia (130) and England (74). Canada, though, ranks sixth in gold medals with eight, behind Australia (50), England (24), India (11), New Zealand (nine) and South Africa (nine).

Closing the gender pay gap isn’t as simple as championing equal pay for equal work.

The US Census Bureau’s latest data indicates women earned 82% of what men earned in 2016. According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), women earn about 57% of what men earn globally. The global gender pay gap is widening, and at the rate things are going, WEF predicts the economic gap between men and women won’t be closed for another 217 years.

Barcelona eased off in the second half, perhaps with the midweek clash at the Stadio Olimpico on their minds, and Leganes hit back midway through the second half.

Former Liverpool winger Nabil El Zhar cut inside and fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box despite slipping as he shot.

But the home side finished off the match as a contest late on with Messi completing his third hat-trick of the season in style.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner chested down Ousmane Dembele’s pass and dinked the ball over Cuellar with consummate ease.

Barca will now turn their attentions to avoiding a disaster in Italy as they defend a 4-1 first-leg lead, still bidding to complete the treble with a Copa del Rey final against Sevilla to come in a fortnight’s time.

Earlier on Saturday, Sevilla’s hopes of qualifying for Europe next season took a hit with a 4-0 thumping at Celta Vigo.

Vincenzo Montella’s side were taken apart by former striker Iago Aspas’ hat-trick, as the ex-Liverpool man strengthened his claim for a place in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Sevilla face Bayern Munich on Wednesday’s at the Allianz Arena needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit to reach the Champions League semi-finals.
