The latest protests by defiant yellow vests seemingly caught Swedish Ambassador Veronika Wand-Danielsson somewhat off-guard, as she apparently discovered that some demonstrators had set up a fire “in front of the embassy” of Sweden’s and Tunisia’s diplomatic mission.
“Where are the police?” Wand-Danielsson asked in a tweet that was accompanied by photos of what looks like a pile of litter burning on a street not far from the embassy. After delivering a rebuke to French law enforcement, the diplomat expressed her gratitude to upstanding French citizens, who had lent a hand to put out the blaze in an act of “solidarity.”
As of Sunday morning, the ambassador’s tweet seems to be scrubbed from her account following a flurry of furious comments from French users.
Many people on Twitter had rushed to offer their sincerest apologies to the ambassador on behalf of the country, while calling the actions of the protesters “inexcusable” and saying that those who lit the fire “do not represent France.”
Others rallied to the defense of police by saying the officers were needed elsewhere and were “working hard” to prevent much more serious damage.
Some respondents, meanwhile, noted that the ambassador’s criticism was just a little bit misdirected, and suggested she call firefighters instead.
“For your information: It is not the police who extinguished fires but firefighters,” one man wrote. “Did you call the Fire Department?” another person asked.
Others also said that Wand-Danielsson might have slightly exaggerated the danger actually posed by the blaze. “I hope you were quick to extinguish [it] as this little bonfire would have burned out in 10 minutes,” one man, who appears to be a Swede, said. Another person said the fire looked “pretty small,” adding that it would “go off all by itself in half an hour.”
One tongue-in-cheek comment also sarcastically praised the ambassador’s resolve as she had to deal with the situation all by herself. “Thank you Madame Ambassador for coming out with a bucket of water to douse the burning box. A true Viking!” it said.
Elsewhere in Paris, the situation spiraled out of control as a crowd of masked protesters broke into the office of the French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux. The rioters used a forklift taken from a nearby construction site and rammed it into the building to make their way into the office, prompting an ’emergency evacuation’ of the official, who was unharmed in the incident.
Saturday marked the eighth weekend of the Yellow Vest protests. Started in mid-November as a protest against a proposed hike in the cost of fuel, the movement then grew into a force opposing Macron’s policies, protesting against a general decline in living standards.
The Yellow Vest rallies have frequently been marred by scuffles with police. This time, the protesters also pelted the officers with bottles and stones, prompting the police to respond with tear gas and pepper spray. At least 103 demonstrators were detained following the protests in Paris alone.

Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno has terminated the credentials of his UK ambassador, who has been at the center of negotiating the fate of WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange, as concerns mount over the whistleblower’s safety.
The decree, with which Moreno effectively sacked Ecuador’s London ambassador Abbad Ortiz, was published by WikiLeaks on Wednesday. The document does not offer any explanation as to why Ortiz, who had been his country’s ambassador to the UK since 2015, is now being permanently recalled. Nor does it name a successor for the outgoing diplomat. The decree is effective immediately.
WikiLeaks tweeted that Abbad, appointed to the office under President Raffael Correa, was the last diplomat the long-term self-exiled editor knew in the embassy. “All diplomats known to Assange have now been transferred away from the embassy,” the whistleblowing site claimed.
This new and sudden twist in the Assange saga has been met with concern by his supporters, with some suggesting that Moreno is doing Washington’s bidding by removing people who might have stood by Assange and opposed his potential handover to the British police – which is expected to bring about a swift extradition to the US. The dismissal has been called “a silent pro-US coup.”
Meanwhile in #Ecuador@Lenin Moreno has replaced judges and election officials. Anyone still loyal to former President @MashiRafael Correa must be purged. This is a silent pro-US coup.

One user argued that sending off diplomats Assange might have bonded with and surrounding him with complete strangers is a form of “psychological torture.”

Assange’s prolonged stay in Ecuador’s London embassy, where he has enjoyed protection from possible arrest and persecution in the US since 2012, has been hanging in the balance since the election of Moreno in 2017. Moreno, a former ally of Correa, has distanced himself from the anti-American policy of his populist predecessor and sought to reboot relations with the US. Ecuador is looking for US support in getting $ 3.9bn in international loans, and there have been reports that Washington’s assistance would be conditional to Ecuador’s handling of the Assange case.

There have also been reports of intense negotiations between senior UK and Ecuadorian officials over the prospects of Assange’s eviction. The Times reported in summer that the talks were held at Foreign Office level. While Moreno has described Assange as “more than a nuisance” and “an inherited problem,” he repeatedly stated that Ecuador would not withdraw its protection unless the whistleblower breaches a set of stringent rules, which restrict his freedom of expression and visitation rights. The rules, which Assange described as violating his fundamental rights and freedoms, were laid out in August, demanding he stays away from discussing politics and pays for his own medical and other expenses. Late October, an Ecuadorian court rejected Assange’s appeal to revise the “protocol”

“That was not our direction,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters on Thursday, adding, “we expect some information when he gets back.”
The Khashoggi case has the “highest level attention” from the US government, Nauert added.
Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who wrote for the Washington Post and lived in Turkey, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week. Ankara has accused Saudi Arabia of murdering the journalist. Riyadh has rejected the allegations as “baseless.”
Ambassador Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud is the son of King Salman and younger brother of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
On Wednesday, 22 senators from both parties sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding an investigation into Khashoggi’s disappearance under the Global Magnitsky Act. The administration has four months to complete the investigation and send a report to the Senate, including recommendations for any sanctions against individuals or countries found responsible.
Trump had already been asked to look into the matter by Khashoggi’s fiancee. “It’s a very sad situation. It’s a very bad situation. And we want do get to the bottom of it,” the US president told reporters Wednesday. “We cannot let this happen, to reporters, to anybody.”

The Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, has expressed his regret over the US envoy Nikki Haley’s surprise resignation. “That was her decision. We have to respect it,” he told journalists, adding that the two had good “working relationships despite the existing differences.” Earlier, the US President Donald Trump said he accepted Haley’s resignation, adding that she wanted some time off.
]]>The ministry has demanded an explanation from the Norwegian ambassador Rune Resaland over the arrest of the man identified as M. Bochkarev at Oslo airport. Moscow wants the “absurd” and “fictitious spy charges” against the man to be dropped and that he be released “immediately.”
Bochkarev travelled to Norway to take part in an international seminar held in the Norwegian parliament on September 20-21. The man, who works in the Central Office of the Russian Senate, was invited to the event by the European Center for Parliamentary Research and Documentation, the ministry’s statement says, adding that the event was public and was attended by “parliamentary representatives from a dozen countries.”
“It is incomprehensible why the presence of a Russian representative at the seminar has led to such provocation,” the ministry said, adding that a “wave of spy hysteria” that has recently engulfed the West had taken a particularly “despicable form” in Norway. It also said that Oslo’s move would not be “left unanswered.”
Norway then rushed to explain that the arrest of the Russian man accused of “gathering some data” has nothing to do with politics and is treated as a criminal case. “This is not a political issue,” Prime Minister Erna Solberg told the Norwegian NTB news agency.
Several western countries have, indeed, gone on an apparent spy hunt, with mainstream media at times dominated by headlines on alleged “Russian agents.” Swiss and Dutch newspapers reported mid-September that the two countries carried out a joint operation with the UK, resulting in the Netherlands expelling two suspected Russian spies in March. This was later confirmed by Switzerland’s intelligence agency, which claimed it had foiled “a Russian plot,” targeting a Swiss laboratory which tests nerve agents such as Novichok.
The details provided by the western media and officials were so scant that it prompted the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to call on them to “present some facts” first, so that Moscow could respond to these allegations.
Meanwhile, the British authorities tirelessly accuse Moscow of being behind the poisoning of the former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter. Most recently, London presented the CCTV footage of two men it claimed were agents of the Russian military intelligence, the GRU, and accused the two of poisoning the Skripals.
The men, identified as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, gave an interview to RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, where they said they claimed to be businessmen and tourists that got wrongly accused by the UK. Their explanation, however, appeared to be not convincing enough for London, which immediately rushed to denounce it as a blow to the “public’s intelligence.”
Meanwhile, across the pond, the US authorities are still looking for proof of Russia’s alleged interference in the US 2016 elections but have failed to find any so far. As part of the Russiagate scandal sweeping the US, a Russian gun rights activist, Maria Butina, got arrested. Butina, who has been accused of being an unregistered Russian lobbyist and basically a Russian agent, has been kept in prison for more than two months without any solid evidence of her guilt being presented.

Beijing “cherishes” the freedom of navigation principle but will not remain idle as Western powers use it as a pretext to show off their “military might” and “create trouble” in the South China Sea, China’s UK ambassador has said.
“Some big countries outside the region did not seem to appreciate the peace and tranquility in the South China Sea. They sent warships and aircraft all the way to the South China Sea to create trouble,” Ambassador Liu Xiaoming told the annual Induction Programme for Commonwealth Diplomats, held in London.
China, the Ambassador stressed, has no problem with freedom of navigation and actually “cherishes” the principle, which allows “hundreds of thousands” of ships to sail through the disputed waters of one of the world’s biggest trade arteries. Beijing is only concerned when the US vessels and those of their allies brazenly breach the territorial waters of the of the Paracel and the Spratly chain of islands, where China has been building up military infrastructure to protect its territorial claims.
“Under the excuse of so-called ‘freedom of navigation’, they ignored the vast sea lane and chose to sail into the adjacent waters of China’s islands and reefs to show off their military might,” the ambassador said, calling such actions a “serious infringement” of China’s sovereignty and a threat to security as well as the peace and stability of the region.
‘Play by the rules’: UK Defense Sec sends warships to South China Sea in veiled challenge to Beijing
“Freedom of navigation is not a license to do whatever one wishes. Freedom of navigation is not freedom to invade other country’s territorial waters and infringe upon other country’s sovereignty. Such ‘freedom’ must be stopped. Otherwise, the South China Sea will never be tranquil,” the Chinese envoy to the UK warned.
The resource-rich South China Sea is the subject of conflicting and overlapping claims by a number of countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The US has been sending its vessels and airplanes to carry out patrol missions in the disputed area, repeatedly causing outcries from Beijing.

American allies, namely the UK and Japan, have also agitated China by shows of force in the disputed waters. Just last week the Maritime Self-Defence Force of Japan held submarine drills in the region, with the participation of destroyers. In early September, Beijing was forced to dispatch a frigate and two helicopters to escort the UK’s HMS Albion through the South China Sea.

“Evidence continues to amass that weapons are being smuggled [to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group in Syria] from outside, including through semi-legal organizations or even under the patronage of security services from other countries,” Nebenzia told the United Nations on Thursday. He said Moscow hopes to have a “meaningful discussion” about putting an end to this malicious practice during an international conference on combatting illicit arms trafficking in Moscow on September 3-4.
“Moreover, IS continues to receive funds from outside sponsors, acting under the guise of charity funds, religious organizations and other non-governmental structures,” he added.
Even though the terrorist organization lost its foothold and has had its main sources of income significantly crippled, as the Syrian army –with Russia’s support– regained control of the bulk of the country’s territory, according to Nebenzia IS continues to represent a considerable threat.
“IS militants are going all-in, often dragging minors into conducting terrorist acts, including kids younger than 12. Quite possibly the frequency of terrorist attacks, especially in the Idlib area, may increase,” Nebenzia warned.

The veteran actor’s task will be “to contribute to the further development of Russian-American relations in the humanitarian sphere, including interactions in the fields of culture, art, public and youth exchanges, among other things,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its Facebook page.
Seagal won’t be receiving any payment for doing the job, which the ministry described as “the case of people’s diplomacy meeting with traditional diplomacy.”
The 66-year-old action star, who appeared in more than 60 movies, including ‘Above the Law’ and ‘Under Siege,’ said that he was “sincerely grateful” to the Russian Foreign Ministry for the opportunity.
“I’ve always tried to do everything possible to help Russian-American relations to improve,” Seagal, who hold both Russian and US passports, said.
“I was working towards without having an official status and now it is a great honor for me to do the same officially.”
Seagal has been a long time supporter of Russia, visiting it regularly as he opened a chain of the Planet Hollywood franchise in Moscow in the 90s. In 2013 he became an ambassador for Russian firearms manufacturer Orsis.
The Hollywood star, whose family originally hails from Russia, received citizenship in 2016 and signed his passport in the presence of Putin.

On Thursday, the Press Association reported that British investigators believe they identified “the suspected perpetrators” of the March poisoning of ex-double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury. After analyzing CCTV footage, they reportedly came to the conclusion that some “Russians” are involved in the attack.
Commenting on the media claims, the Russian envoy said that official London remains silent on the issue, stressing that media reports often fail to find any confirmation.
“These are media reports, unfortunately there are no official statements from the British side. I want to hear from Scotland Yard, from the Foreign Office. Many versions [published] in the newspapers are not confirmed on the official level,” Yakovenko told journalists in Moscow.
The envoy also warned that Moscow “will exert pressure” on London, including through official requests and dialogue, over the Skripal case, as it is “a political issue.” He also plans to discuss the issue during the meeting with the UK’s new foreign minister, Jeremy Hunt.
The Skripal case was not on the agenda during the recent Putin-Trump summit in Helsinki as London failed to provide evidence not only to Russia, but even to its allies, Yakovenko noted.
“If the British had managed to provide any official information regarding the ongoing investigation, it might have been a topic for [Trump-Putin] discussion,” the envoy said. “But because the British side still does not provide anything to the Russian side, and moreover, presented nothing to its allies, then what is there to actually discuss?”
Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned by a nerve agent in Salisbury in March. In late June, a British couple, Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess, were exposed to the same substance in the town of Amesbury, around 12km from Salisbury. After Sturgess died on June 8, the Russian embassy in the UK said that a leak at the Porton Down chemical laboratory, located some 8km from both Salisbury and Amesbury, might be to blame for the incidents.
The UK authorities have pointed a finger at Moscow for the Skripals’ poisoning since March, while still failing to present any evidence. Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attack, asking to share the data on the incident, but still has received nothing but allegations so far.

Kay Bailey Hutchison, the Trump administration’s envoy to NATO, told reporters on Thursday that there is “nothing being said at all about the troop alignment in Germany or anything that would change,” the Washington Post reported. Commenting on speculations relating to potential troop withdrawal, Hutchison said: “I’ve heard nothing on that score.”
Earlier media reports suggested that President Donald Trump floated the idea of scaling down or withdrawing the 35,000-strong US contingent from Germany. Speculations arose that it was because the president was frustrated by the fact that Germany and other NATO allies do not pay their ‘fair share’ into the alliance’s budget, the Washington Post reported.
But the US military pushed back on allegations that the audit had been commissioned by President Donald Trump’s National Security Council.
“We regularly review our posture and we perform cost-benefit analysis to make sure that we’ve got the right forces in the right place with the right capabilities. That’s a constant process across DOD’s footprint,” said Pentagon spokesman Colonel Rob Manning.
“Germany is host to the largest US force presence in Europe. We remain deeply rooted in the common values and strong relationship between our countries.”
Trump has stepped up his criticism of NATO ahead of the organization’s annual summit scheduled for July 11-12 in Brussels. “Germany has to spend more money. Spain, France. It’s not fair what they’ve done to the United States,” he said aboard Air Force One last week.
Earlier, he lashed out at Berlin on Twitter, saying the American army is defending Europe “at great financial loss.” Though Trump’s harsh stance had made European officials jitter, some wondered whether it might be just an aggressive negotiation tactic ahead of the key talks in Brussels.
