The 2022 edition has so many upgrades that it’ll make anyone who bought a Kindle in the last year (like me) bilious with envy. First up, there’s a new 300 ppi display, up from the 167 ppi found on its predecessors, giving it the same resolution as the last few Paperwhites, boasting “laser-quality” text and graphics.

Amazon’s generosity is matched elsewhere on the spec list, with the on-board storage doubled to 16GB. You’ll also get a longer, six-week battery life, a lighter frame, adjustable front-light and the long overdue addition of a USB-C port for charging. If that wasn’t enough, buyers will also get a four month trial to Kindle Unlimited, although that offer is only available for a limited time.

As the Kindle gets an update, so does the junior edition of the e-reader, with the Kindle Kids getting the same specs as its parent. Each unit comes with a year’s subscription to Amazon Kids+, with a library of thousands of age-appropriate books and the usual parental control features.

Amazon is also boasting about the sustainability credentials of the new Kindles, saying that both are built from 90 percent recycled magnesium. Plus, all of the packaging is now 100 percent recyclable, made with material from responsibly-managed forests.

If there’s one downside, it’s that — at least right now — you won’t get a discounted Kindle if you opt for a version with ads. Amazon’s press release says that the new Kindle will start at $ 99.99 in Black or Denim, while the Kindle Kids will set you back $ 199.99.

Canon’s entry-level Rebel T7 DSLR targets social media users https://briefnews.eu/canons-entry-level-rebel-t7-dslr-targets-social-media-users/ https://briefnews.eu/canons-entry-level-rebel-t7-dslr-targets-social-media-users/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 05:31:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canons-entry-level-rebel-t7-dslr-targets-social-media-users/

On top of its M50 mirrorless with 4K video, Canon also took the wraps of its latest DSLR, the Rebel T7. The successor to the two-year-old, 18-megapixel Rebel T6 now has a much bigger 24.1-megapixel sensor, making it more attractive next to excellent smartphone cameras on the iPhone X and Galaxy S8+, for instance.

The Rebel T7 makes it fairly easy to take photos with “Scene Intelligent” and auto modes, then share them on social networks via WiFi and NFC. Other specs remain largely unchanged, including the 9-point phase-detection autofocus, 3fps burst shooting speed and 1,920 x 1,080, 30fps video. Clearly, this is a camera for beginners, albeit beginners that have developed high expectations because smartphone cameras are so good these days.

The Rebel T7 also arrives in April of 2018, and will only be sold as a kit with the the EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens for $ 550. For around the same price, however, you might be more tempted by Nikon’s D3400, which has a similar sensor and offers slightly better performance.

Zeiss’ entry-level VR headset is about to get a lot more fun https://briefnews.eu/zeiss-entry-level-vr-headset-is-about-to-get-a-lot-more-fun/ https://briefnews.eu/zeiss-entry-level-vr-headset-is-about-to-get-a-lot-more-fun/#respond Thu, 08 Feb 2018 15:17:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/zeiss-entry-level-vr-headset-is-about-to-get-a-lot-more-fun/

Normally when people talk about Zeiss, it’s regarding the company’s optics business — which has been around for more than a century. However, Zeiss is making inroads into the VR space as well. Last year, the company introduced its One Plus VR headset. This entry-level device retails for $ 70 and, like the Google Cardboard or Daydream, leverages your smartphone as both the processor and display unit.

What sets the One Plus apart is its optics. Most headset lenses have a focal point, which is why you have to fiddle with knobs and dials after you put on the VR gear to get to everything in focus. The ones in Zeiss’s headset have a focal plane, meaning that as soon as you put on the headgear, you’re ready to dive into your VR experience — no further adjustments necessary.

Now, that’s all well and good, assuming you don’t mind limiting your VR experiences to only what’s available through the Cardboard/Daydream or Gear VR app platforms (which really isn’t much). And, until now, unless you wanted to throw down a couple hundred bucks on either a Vive or an Oculus Rift — and the hardware to run them — Google’s offering was about the best you could hope for. But, come this May, One Plus owners will have an entirely new library of VR titles to play with.

Zeiss plans to introduce a new accessory for its current headset, dubbed the VR One Connect. It includes a pair of Bluetooth-enabled controllers (each offering three degrees of freedom), a 12-foot USB cord and the necessary software to tether your phone to your laptop and access your Steam account. Setup is straightforward. You install the Zeiss app (either iOS or Android), plug your phone into your gaming laptop so that the Zeiss and Steam apps can communicate, then slot the phone into your headset. Once you calibrate the Bluetooth controllers, you’re good to go.

This offers a significant advantage over similar VR setups. One, since the processing duties are offloaded from the phone to the PC, your phone won’t run hot 15 minutes into the gaming session. And the fact that the phone is tethered to the computer means that will remained charged regardless of how long you play. I spent around 30 minutes with the One Plus strapped to my face as I shot at drones in Space Pirate Trainer and demons in Doom VR. And, while my face did get a bit sweaty from the exertion of ducking and dodging, the iPhone we used stayed cool (and fully charged).

Don’t let the One Plus’ price point fool you, however. I didn’t experience nearly the same degree of the “screen door” effect that one does with the PSVR. What’s more, the latency with using the One Plus was far lower than what you’d get with a Cardboard/Daydream headset running everything from a smartphone. Granted, the quality of the VR experience is going to depend a bit on what handset you’ve got inside it — we had an iPhone X for the purposes of this demo — but the One Plus accommodates a variety of screen sizes. Basically, any iPhone after the 6, most of the Galaxy Notes, and even the Galaxy S 8 will work with the One Plus.

The VR One Connect is slated to hit retailers this May and will go for $ 130 when it does so. However, Zeiss will also offer both the headset and the Connect bundled for $ 150 at the same time. So even if you’re not a heavy gamer, or just want to see what all the hubbub about VR is without spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars, the One Plus and VR Connect make for an attractive entry-level option.

2019 Mercedes A-Class revealed, and it doesn't look entry-level inside https://briefnews.eu/2019-mercedes-a-class-revealed-and-it-doesnt-look-entry-level-inside/ https://briefnews.eu/2019-mercedes-a-class-revealed-and-it-doesnt-look-entry-level-inside/#respond Sat, 03 Feb 2018 01:45:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2019-mercedes-a-class-revealed-and-it-doesnt-look-entry-level-inside/

A few days ago, we showed you a thinly-obscured “teaser” shot of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class that didn’t leave much to the imagination. We’d already seen the interior well before that, and it looked sharp. Now, as promised, the company has shown the production 2019 A-Class in Amsterdam, and it marks the debut of the interestingly named MBUX infotainment system.

Mercedes says the A-Class represents an evolution of its evocatively-named “Sensual Purity” design language. It’s handsome enough, blending some D-pillar lines we’re more familiar with on the Volkswagen Golf with elements that are unmistakably Mercedes. To American eyes, this hatchback would probably be better described as understated than sensual, and the rear end is especially plain. But we won’t get this hatchback at all, so that’s a bit academic.

What we will get are a family of vehicles based on this platform: another CLA and GLA, and a new A sedan. There is even a rumoredGLB boxy crossover, as we’ve seen in spy shots, although it doesn’t officially have a name yet.

While in Europe a range of diesel engines will be available, we’re most likely to get the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four paired to the company’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. 4Matic all-wheel drive is optional in Europe and will likely be an option on most of the A-Class-based vehicles in the U.S.. Suspension is MacPherson up front, and while entry-level models will have a rear torsion beam, more powerful or all-wheel-drive models will get four-link in the rear — either way, fairly standard stuff. Active damping control is available on some versions.

Where things get really exciting is the interior. It looks much more like its bigger, more expensive stablemates than an entry-level Mercedes. The twin, freestanding LCD screens look positively gorgeous, although the complete effect of the MBUX-equipped A-Class interior is a bit busy. There will almost certainly be bargain-basement A-Classes that are not equipped with this dashboard, but it’s too early to say which A-Class variants will get it, and in what trims, in the U.S.

The A-Class hatchback itself might not be of terrible interest to Americans (although Canadians will be able to buy one), but we’re excited to see what vehicles it’ll spawn and if AMG will get involved. Spoiler alert: Of course they will. In the meantime, if you’re in Europe you can buy most versions of the 2019 A-Class starting in March.

Few auto companies manage to produce such consistently good-looking cars as does Aston Martin. Barring the strange decision that was the Cygnet (a Scion iQ minicar with an Aston grille), it is becoming increasingly hard to remember the last time the British sports-car specialist turned out something that wasn’t either handsome or gorgeous. It’s a streak that the new Vantage, set to go on sale early next year, definitely isn’t going to break. READ MORE ››

SCG 004S opens the entry-level door at Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus https://briefnews.eu/scg-004s-opens-the-entry-level-door-at-scuderia-cameron-glickenhaus/ https://briefnews.eu/scg-004s-opens-the-entry-level-door-at-scuderia-cameron-glickenhaus/#respond Sun, 19 Nov 2017 22:19:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scg-004s-opens-the-entry-level-door-at-scuderia-cameron-glickenhaus/

Two years ago, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus raised eyebrows and heartbeats with the SCG 003 race car that doubled as a road car. The all-carbon beast with the ferocious nose demanded two million euros to purchase, and had to be imported to the US in pieces as a kit car. With the introduction of the three-seater, 650-horsepower SCG 004S sports car this week, the tyro Scuderia affirms its evolution toward small-volume carmaker. SCG’s certification as a Low Volume Manufacturer means the 004S will be built in the US and stamped with a VIN.

Yes, we wrote “three-seater.” The SCG 004S places the driver in the center of the cockpit, between two staggered outboard seats, swiping a page from the McLaren F1‘s long list of killer apps. A running prototype isn’t due until mid 2018, so specs are approximate for the moment: a mid-mounted 5.0-liter, twin-turbo engine gets around 650 hp and 531 pound-feet of torque, hitting its redline at about 8,200 rpm. That should provide expeditious acceleration, the carbon chassis and body in the 004S keeping weight down to around 2,600 pounds. A six-speed, three-pedal, gated manual comes standard, a paddle-shift can be specced. The benchmark SCG 003 S road car uses a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 with 800 hp and 627 lb-ft working through a seven-speed sequential gearbox.

The 004S exterior design combines a front aspect reminiscent of the bespoke SCG P4/5 Competizione with a rear end directly descended from the SCG 003. The middle features a bubble glasshouse anchored by flying buttresses winging down into rear fenders. The buttresses will remind some of the new Ford GT (or BMW i8 or Acura NSX), but in recent design history Jason Castriota’s Ferrari 599 design put functional buttresses back on the map, and Castriota’s Stile Bertone Mantide gave those winged elements top billing.

Inside, a lengthy row of analog dials, toggle switches, and knobs dominates the SCG 004S instrument panel. The only digital concessions appear to be a rearview camera, and race information panel to the right of the driver’s seat, just above an iPhone dock. In contrast to the new-school carbon exterior, the streak of white gauges – fronted by a steering wheel that Steve McQueen might have handed over between driving stints – channels a hardy old-school racer ready for hard old-school driving.

SCG will be pleased to engrave your name in the pre-order books right now, taking a $ 40,000 deposit against the 004S base price around $ 400,000. Sometime in 2019 should see the delivery of 25 Founders Edition coupes, and a European racing program that includes the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. The company plans scale production of 250 cars per year by 2021.

2019 Lamborghini Huracan: What the Refreshed Entry-Level Lambo May Gain https://briefnews.eu/2019-lamborghini-huracan-what-the-refreshed-entry-level-lambo-may-gain/ https://briefnews.eu/2019-lamborghini-huracan-what-the-refreshed-entry-level-lambo-may-gain/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 21:43:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2019-lamborghini-huracan-what-the-refreshed-entry-level-lambo-may-gain/ 2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante aerodynamics

–

Flush with Audi technology and betting the Urus will double company sales, Lamborghini is willing to radicalize the Huracán beyond a typical supercar refresh.

–

When an updated Huracán arrives in late 2018 or early 2019, it could adapt rear-wheel steering from the Aventador S and a 48-volt electrical subsystem similar to those in the Audi SQ7 and Bentley Bentayga. As we’ve experienced, Lamborghini’s rear-wheel steering shrinks the Aventador’s impossibly wide, truckish footprint to that of a lighter, smaller sports car, so imagine what it could do for the lighter, smaller Huracán. According to a senior Lamborghini engineer, the issue of cost—even in a Lamborghini—has executives wavering since the Huracán is supposed to be the “entry level” supercar.

–

2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante

–

As for the higher voltage, next-generation Lamborghini models will employ a 48-volt subsystem that runs concurrently with the primary 12-volt system. Since the Urus will share much of its hardware with Bentley, it’s likely that the 200-mph SUV will feature adaptive anti-roll bars that twist by means of high-powered electric motors. The Huracán may introduce this feature—or others powered by the 48-volt subsystem, such as Audi’s electric rotary dampers—before it is replaced, although the complexity of adding a secondary battery, a belt-alternator starter, and more wiring may not fit so neatly in a mid-engined Lambo.

–

If the engineers can make it work, don’t expect the Huracán to use a hybrid assist as on the 2019 Audi A8. Lamborghini is more concerned with wringing every last pony from the 5.2-liter V-10, although our source tells us that engine—which started life in the Gallardo and peaks at 631 horsepower in the Huracán Performante—is reaching its limit.

–

2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante

–

Regardless of whether Lamborghini increases power and rewires the entire car, the team is also considering a GT3 version that would be more hard core than the rear-wheel-drive Performante introduced this year. Lamborghini executives started promising rear-wheel-drive Huracán variants as soon as the car debuted for 2014, and while the LP580-2 and Performante are as raw as ever, a true Superleggera is in the cards. Picture a street-legal version of the latest Super Trofeo Evo race car in the vein of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and you’re not far off.

–

–

But like all of these proposals, the GT3 hasn’t been okayed for production. Whatever final form the refreshed Huracán takes, it’ll no doubt keep us out of breath for several more years.

–

Since 1994 when it arrived, more than 1.2 million copies of the Hyundai Accent have been sold here in the United States, with the company gradually refining and improving its entry-level subcompact through four generations. While its exterior dimensions and price point pit it against the Toyota Yaris iA, the fifth-generation 2018 Accent’s 104 cubic feet of total interior volume are large for its class. The Mexico-built Accent also boasts added torsional rigidity (32 percent more, Hyundai claims), offers the sort of connected technology that today’s customers demand, and, most pleasingly to us, is the beneficiary of some solid engineering juju on the chassis tuning.
