President Donald Trump’s surprise trip to Iraq to visit US troops, his first combat-zone visit as president, fell short among some political commentators, including one of the most highly decorated officers in the US Army.
Former US Army four-star Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who was awarded three Purple Heart medals, two Distinguished Service Crosses, and two Silver Stars, described Trump’s visit as “embarrassing” and “entirely inappropriate.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

A digital studio called Hello Velocity has created a typeface that embraces well-known corporate logos and is still somehow far less annoying than Comic Sans. The studio says it creates “thought-provoking internet experiences,” and its Brand New Roman font is a clever statement on consumerism.
Each letter and number draws from a corporate logo, and much of the branding will be instantly recognizable for many of us, highlighting just how ingrained these companies are in our day-to-day lives. In fact, identifying each of the 76 logos makes for a fun game. The lowercase “a” is obviously Amazon‘s branding, and the zero is Target‘s logo. In between, you’ll see branding from Disqus to Disney, Reece’s to Rockstar Games, and Monster Energy to McDonalds. Typing a double “d” gives you the Dunkin’ Donuts logo, while Hello Velocity snuck in its own branding in place of “hi.”
If you’d like to download the font, it might be best to hurry — companies that are protective of their branding may already have their corporate lawyers drafting cease and desist letters. You can also install Chrome or Firefox plugins that turn entire webpages into a logo-filled experience, but given how Engadget’s homepage looks with the font, that’s maybe not the best idea.

Here’s a nasty rumor that’s actually true: After a delayed start, Paramount Network has decided not to air the upcoming Heathers TV reboot at all, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The network ultimately decided that the reboot’s satirical depiction of violence inside a high school “didn’t feel right,” Paramount Network president of development and production Keith Cox tells THR. The reboot was set to debut back in March, but was delayed in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Last month, a new July 10 premiere date was announced, but now the project has been scrapped entirely.
Based on the iconic 1988 film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, the new-look Heathers starred Grace Victoria Cox (Under the Dome) as teen Veronica Sawyer, who takes on her school’s mean-girl trio — aka “the Heathers” — with help from her unhinged new pal/lover J.D. (played by Quantico‘s James Scully). Original co-star Shannen Doherty was also onboard to make an appearance in the reboot.
Prince Philip, 96, may be absent from most of the royal wedding on May 19 2018, a palace insider has revealed.
The husband of Queen Elizabeth, 92, is believed to be attending the wedding ceremony of Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, at St. George’s Chapel.
However, he will “retire” after this point, the source told Express.co.uk in an exclusive interview.
While it might be assumed this is for health reasons, after the Duke of Edinburgh’s hip operation last month, the real reason is said to be more complex.
It is said to be the Duke’s “very independent” personality that prevents him from attending the rest of the wedding.
“He’s getting better but we don’t know will he go for the whole day,” said the source.
“He’s still in a bad way and it takes a long time to recover. The thing with the Duke is he will not want to be seen in a wheelchair publicly.
“He’s a very independent person, he likes to do things himself.
He’d rather miss the wedding than be seen out in a wheelchair.”
The source explained the Duke would most probably attend the nuptials, but not the celebrations afterwards.
“He’ll go for the wedding itself at St. George’s Chapel but then he’ll retire after that.
This means the Duke of Edinburgh will most likely miss the wedding reception at St. George’s Hall, the source added.
Prince Philip was pictured on Friday this week for the time since he left King Edward VII hospital in London on April 13, following a hip operation.
He attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show, which is held in the private grounds of Windsor Castle.
However, he did not leave the Range Rover in which he was seated, choosing to remain in the driver’s seat and watch the show through binoculars.
It is believed Prince Philip is a fan of Meghan Markle, his future granddaughter in law.
The Duke of Edinburgh, who is grandfather to Meghan’s fiance Prince Harry, 33, is said to have “got on” well with the future royal.
The pair spent time together at Sandringham, where the royal family traditionally spend the Christmas period together. It was Meghan’s first Christmas with the royals.
But what was it that helped Meghan to ingratiate herself with the Queen’s consort and husband? It is said she used a clever tactic.
Rather than simply discussing the royal family she is marrying into, Meghan chose to quiz Prince Philip on his own personal background.
The tactic is said to have worked a treat, according to the source, and Prince Philip was also said to have warmed quickly to Meghan’s confident personality.
“The Duke of Edinburgh really got on with her,” the source revealed to Express.co.uk.
The Turkish military and allied forces have taken full control of the Syrian city of Afrin, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Sunday. Kurdish YPG forces had previously maintained control of the area.
The pro-Turkish forces entered the city before dawn and faced no resistance from Kurdish fighters, who had already withdrawn, according to reports.

WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange has pinned the blame for the website’s releases ahead of the 2016 presidential election on the Obama administration, as it put him in such conditions where he had “nothing to do but work 24/7.”
Assange made the quip on Twitter Friday, responding to a two-week-old anti-Russian post by the former Attorney General Eric Holder.
Holder, who headed the Department of Justice from 2009 to 2015, put forth the usual set of allegations against Moscow, claiming Russia would interfere with the upcoming US midterm elections.
Russian threat to our upcoming elections: do something! Do anything. Impose sanctions overwhelmingly approved by even this dysfunctional congress. Are you simply unfit, without the necessary nerve or do they have something on you? We were attacked!
— Eric Holder (@EricHolder) February 20, 2018
Apparently addressing President Donald Trump, Holder demanded new sanctions against Moscow, which were “overwhelmingly approved by even this dysfunctional congress.”
“Are you simply unfit, without the necessary nerve or do they have something on you? We were attacked!” Holder wrote on February 20.
“Attacked? By what? The truth?” Julian Assange replied on Friday, adding that ultimately the US case against him, which followed WikiLeaks’ release of US classified documents in 2010, was to blame.
Attacked? By what? The truth?
It’s entirely your own fault, Eric. Thanks to your unconstitutional grand jury against @WikiLeaks you left me with nothing to do but work 24/7, in harsh conditions, for years–and I’m good, very good, at my job.
— Julian Assange
(@JulianAssange) March 9, 2018
Barack Obama was president and Holder was attorney general at the time. Their efforts to prosecute WikiLeaks and Assange personally over the publication of US diplomatic cables and military documents about Iraq and Afghanistan resulted in Assange seeking asylum at the embassy of Ecuador in the UK.
Over the six years in London, Assange said, he’s had “nothing to do but work” round the clock – which resulted in WikiLeaks revealing more secrets of the US establishment. In the summer of 2016, WikiLeaks published internal Democratic Party emails, followed by a month-long drip of emails from the private account of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta, in the month prior to the presidential election.
Podesta, Clinton, and much of the Obama-era US establishment, however, has called WikiLeaks a “cutout” for Russian intelligence and blames Moscow for the alleged “hack” of the emails. No solid evidence to back up the claim has been produced. Assange has rejected those claims.
“Next time, not that there will be one, try following the constitution you swore to uphold,” the WikiLeaks co-founder advised the former AG in a subsequent Tweet.
He posted a link to a 2014 article describing his call for Holder to drop the case against WikiLeaks altogether. The DOJ ignored the request and the case remains open, while Assange continues to live in his embassy exile.

Like hedgehogs and wood frogs, many beloved vehicles go into hibernation in the winter. This garaged slumber protects them from predators such as potholes and road salt and from sliding into ravines, and it allows for the completion of deferred maintenance—or its continued deferral. But in the spring, they are awakened from their respite, flushed with fresh fluids, and driven or shipped to events around the world, where they are venerated, ridiculed, and raced and generally given the opportunity to break down or crash and remind their owners of the fragility of life, which is a lesson that can’t be learned too often.

Founded in 1996 as an upstart southern competitor to California’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Amelia Island has grown significantly in size and stature over the past 22 years to the point where the vehicles on display here are as prestigious as those at the world’s top car shows. Because it’s a bit less traditional, Amelia is often more adventurous in its classes and curation, so you’ll see unique concept, coachbuilt, and celebrity cars. And because it takes place on a tiny barrier island off the coast of northeast Florida, it is more self-contained than other such gatherings. Everything occurs at the Ritz-Carlton—auctions, art exhibits, lectures and discussions, sales of ephemera, manufacturer rides and drives, black-tie galas, excessive drinking, and the concours itself. This means less time slogging through traffic and more time ogling beautiful cars. The crowds have grown considerably in recent years, but the location and scale allow the event to maintain a hospitable sense of intimacy and accessibility.

Five years ago, two-time Le Mans class winner Patrick Long and his friend Howie Idelson decided to put on a car show. As, like just about everyone else, they love air-cooled Porsches, they focused their event on them. They named it Luftgekühlt because that word has uniquely complex combinations of consonants and because it happens to mean “air cooled” in German. They then invited cars that represented an obsessive’s history of air-cooled Porsches to the parking lot of an L.A. cycle shop and told friends to stop by. Now in its fifth year, this pop-up show has become the event for Porschephiles but somehow retains its compelling combination of cool congeniality, insider exclusivity, and extremely good taste in Porsches. Celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld and Patrick Dempsey mix with tuners, artists, brand ambassadors, fanboys, and the kind of hip concessioners usually absent from concours. Sign up for updates online so you’ll be in the know when this year’s location is revealed.

This crazed mountaintop race is the second-oldest continuously operating American motorsports event after the Indianapolis 500. With the notable exceptions of the years during which the world wars were being fought, plus 1935, it has been held annually since 1916. The Hill Climb is aptly named, as it entails racing up a 12.4-mile slog that features not only 156 turns but a gain of nearly one vertical mile of elevation. It ends at the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, among the tallest in the continental United States. The air is thin at the summit, with 41 percent less oxygen than at sea level, so drivers and their vehicles have to work harder to maintain power, speed, and focus. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, and quads all participate. In fact, unlike most sanctioned races, there are no limits on the type of vehicle that can enter; drivers have made the climb in overpowered semis and homemade EVs. Gravel sections used to add to the course’s harrowing nature, but since 2011, for better or worse, the entire route has been paved.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has been wowing car lovers since 1950. In the intervening seven decades, the event has developed from a small sports-car show and race into a weeklong car-and-lifestyle bacchanal that blankets the Monterey Peninsula in plumes of blue smoke and champagne spume. The actual concours is a must-see, and the ancillary events are more than worthwhile. Concorso Italiano showcases vintage Italian cars, with rows of overheating De Tomasos and Lancias. Legends of the Autobahn does the same for the Germans, but with less wasted fluids. The Quail is an exercise in elite excess for the oligarchic and overrestored—cars and humans alike. The Concours d’LeMons revives beloved and maligned baroque vehicles, mostly from the ’70s and ’80s. Auctions from Bonhams, Gooding, and RM Sotheby’s feature record-setting eight-figure classics. But our favorite show comes with admission to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca: the chance to wander around the paddock and see, hear, smell, and feel vintage cars of every era starting up, revving, running, and racing.

There was little surprise at the recent news that Porsche had axed its last remaining diesel vehicles in Europe, with the diesel versions of the Macan and Panamera being withdrawn from sale. It was a move in keeping with the tide of history; the Dieselgate scandal has affected sales of compression-ignition engines on both sides of the Atlantic, and Porsche’s adoption of the technology came more from market pressure than from any great enthusiasm for it.
–
Yet, it seems, those reports were wrong—or at least premature. Porsche in Great Britain, the source of the original report, has released a clarifying statement that it is still planning a diesel version of the new Cayenne.
–
“Currently, the demand for diesel models is falling, whereas interest in [gasoline] and hybrid models is increasing significantly,” the company’s statement said. “In light of these facts, Porsche has adapted its product planning. This decision means that Porsche currently does not offer any vehicles with diesel engines. However, it does not mean a diesel exit at Porsche. As announced, the new Cayenne is set to feature a diesel powertrain. The exact time of the market launch is not yet clear.”
–
–
–
–
–
Which is good news for Europe’s lovers of frugal luxury SUVs but of little direct bearing to those of us on the other side of the Atlantic. The Volkswagen Group has already said it won’t be bringing any of its diesel engines back to the States, and Porsche exclusively uses VW-sourced diesel powerplants.
