Stephen Colbert barely had a chance to react to Nancy Pelosi’s big announcement on Tuesday before his studio audience in New York erupted in cheers and applause. Late Show attendees sprung to their feet after the House Speaker announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, who is accused of trying to extort Ukraine into a political probe of Joe Biden and his son. “Finally, a check on the president,” Colbert said. “Up until now, we’ve only had a check from the president to a porn star.” Colbert opined that this investigation “makes Watergate look like Nixon tried to pass an expired coupon at the Kroger.” What makes it even worse, he said, is that Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s leader took place just one day after special counsel Robert Mueller testified to Congress about Russian interference. “So the idea that a foreign power like Russia shouldn’t interfere in our elections is the only thing everyone agreed on — everyone but Trump,” Colbert said, “because he just moved one country over.” Afterwards, Colbert informed his audience that the whistleblower who raised concerns about Trump’s alleged extortion attempt is poised to speak before the House Intelligence Committee as early as this week. “It’s historic, high-stakes testimony in Congress from someone with intimate knowledge of Trump’s criminal wrongdoing,” he said. “We haven’t had one of those in days.” Press PLAY on the video above to watch Colbert’s monologue in full, then hit the comments with your reactions. Well that was pretty, pretty, pretty fast. HBO on Thursday announced that it has renewed Curb Your Enthusiasm for a 10th season. The announcement comes less than two weeks after the Season 9 finale. “We are thrilled that Larry will be back with his uniquely acerbic wit and comedic sensibility,” Casey Bloys, President of HBO programming, said in a statement. Added Larry David, “As I’ve said many times, when one has the opportunity to annoy someone, one should do so.” All things considered, the Curb pick-up came relatively quick. The eighth season of the HBO comedy ended all the way back in September 2011; a Season 9 renewal wouldn’t come for another five years. Production on Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10 is set to commence in Spring 2018. Are you looking forward to another season of Curb? Surprised it’s even happening in the first place? The surest signal yet that automated vehicles are inching closer to reaching American roads arrives not via a big announcement about testing in New York City nor the deployment of a fleet of hundreds of cars in Phoenix. Instead, it’s the sight of LeBron James relaxing in the rear seat of a driverless sedan. With the basketball season under way, Intel has aired a television ad called “Fearless” (embedded below) that features the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar. In the spot, his initial reluctance to trust a vehicle that pulls to the curb without a human driver transforms into unbridled enthusiasm for the technology in the span of 30 seconds.
–
It might take longer for an apprehensive public to follow his lead. Surveys show a majority of Americans are reluctant to ride in automated vehicles, a problematic figure for industry officials who believe the technology will reach streets sooner than is generally expected. Intel chief executive officer Brian Krzanich said the ad is intended to help establish the trustworthiness of autonomous vehicles.

“The technology is moving quickly, and different types of vehicles are going to start coming out next year,” he told Car and Driver. “Either it will be driverless taxis on relatively fixed routes, like we’ve talked about [doing] with Waymo next year, or we’ll have cars with on-ramp-to-off-ramp capability. The idea is to get people interested and to understand that it is safe.”
–
–
Viewers might first be perplexed to find that Intel, the Silicon Valley chip maker, is responsible for the autonomous-vehicle industry’s first major television spot. But over the past year, the company has spent billions to strengthen its autonomous ambitions and gone public regarding its long-standing role in powering systems designed for Google’s self-driving-car project.
–
Krzanich himself has assumed a larger public role in addressing the broader realm of autonomous driving; he is slated to deliver keynote addresses over the next three months at both the Los Angeles auto show and the CES technology show. We sat down with him in Detroit last week to discuss Intel’s recent push in shaping autonomous driving, regulatory developments, and, perhaps most important, the company’s intention of having a big say in how the technology is presented to skeptical consumers.
–
–
–
Intel forged a partnership with BMW and computer-vision software company Mobileye last year, the latter of which it acquired earlier this year for $ 15 billion. Their alliance, which now includes Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, announced plans to deploy a pilot project involving at least 40 autonomous vehicles by the end of 2017. With little more than two months remaining this year, Krzanich remained tight-lipped on those plans but affirmed they remain on track. “I believe they’re on schedule, with everything I’ve seen,” he said.
–
Separately, Mobileye remains on track to build a fleet of roughly 100 test vehicles equipped with automated systems that don’t require a driver behind a wheel. Those vehicles will be dispatched to locations in the United States, Europe, and Israel, and Krzanich said the first batch will arrive by the end of 2017 and the remainder by the close of 2018.
–
Beyond those test vehicles, Intel already operates a small fleet of test vehicles at its campus in Chandler, Arizona, where researchers conducted a small study, gauging reactions and responses of 10 participants to fully automated vehicles before, during, and after their first rides. Seven key findings emerged from their project. Perhaps most interesting among them was that there were clear contradictions in the way people both embraced and worried about autonomous travel.
–
–
–
Intel plans more research with a larger group of participants. All of this fits within the company’s intentions of preparing the public for these cars.
–
Perhaps the most consequential way to do that is by touting the prospective safety of autonomous cars, which have been widely billed as a moral imperative because they offer the promise of improving safety and reducing traffic fatalities. It’s an alluring message, especially at a time when road deaths are rising. But this promise often remains vague, with few specifics in terms of the savings.
–
Last week, Mobileye published a white paper that marks an exception to that ambiguity. The company’s chief technology officer wrote that the number of traffic deaths in America could be cut from roughly 40,000 per year to 40 if regulators and businesses agreed to standardize some rules for automated vehicles to follow. The paper, “A Plan to Develop Safe Autonomous Vehicles, and Prove It,” says such rules could ensure an autonomous car crash happens about as often as a wing falls off a commercial airliner in midflight.
–
Krzanich said an agreement on common rules would add clarity to crash investigations and help define liability.
–
–
–
–
–
“You can kind of look at it as there’s two ways to build the way the car drives,” he said. “One is, I just respond to what I see. The other way is to look at the environment and have a set of rules that says, hey, I’m driving down a two-lane road, and there are all these cars parked along the side, and someone could run out. I have a rule that says, ‘Don’t exceed this speed based on my stopping distance.’ ”
–
Machine-caused traffic deaths will always draw greater scrutiny, but it’s important, Krzanich said, to get to a point where “society and governments do not focus on the 40 deaths that could still occur but focus on the 39,960 deaths that we’ve prevented and eliminated from the system.”

Larry is pretty, pretty, pretty much a dead man walking by the conclusion of Sunday’s long-anticipated Season 9 premiere of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
HBO
The fictional Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm”—which we imagine is not very far removed from the real Larry David— has many quirks, and has been on many adventures throughout the show’s eight-season run.
In honor of the return of the show after six years off the air, we collected our favorite and most memorable “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episodes.
From an attempt to illegally move his mother’s dead body to a less embarrassing gravesite, to squabbles with Ted Danson, to an epic fight with Diane Keaton’s interior decorator, here are the best episodes of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” which you can watch right now on HBO Go or HBO Now.
These are the best episodes of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”:
HBO
Episode description: Larry gets into a fight with an interior decorator at Diane Keaton’s house.
Original air date: November 12, 2000
Best moment: Larry criticizes the sign-up sheet system at his doctor’s office. They change the system after his complaints, and the new system (which was his idea) doesn’t work in his favor, either.
HBO
Episode description: Larry twice encounters bad luck on the same golf hole.
HBO
Episode description: Larry is changed by a near-death experience, a revelation about his father, and a sandwich named after him.
Original air date: September 25, 2005
Best moment: Larry, disgusted by the contents of a sandwich named after him (onions, capers, white fish, sable, cream cheese), tries to get Ted Danson to switch sandwiches with him. Danson refuses.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is back, and it’s essentially the same as it was when the HBO comedy went off the air six years ago.
While 2011 seems long ago enough to warrant one of those revivals that every popular show seems to be undergoing nowadays, Curb Your Enthusiasm is eschewing all fancy “revival” terms and “fresh” approaches to deliver some good, old-fashioned cantankerous comedy gold with its ninth season.
It’s been so long since Curb Your Enthusiasm has been on the air that the instantly recognizable theme music has become a meme, and creator and star Larry David is has become primarily known for his uncanny Bernie Sanders impression on Saturday Night Live.
Needless to say, there may be pressure on the show to introduce the classic series to a new generation of viewers who ostensibly grew up not knowing the series — much less the fact that David is a minor Hollywood celebrity because of his role as the co-creator of seminal ’90s sitcom Seinfeld. You think I exaggerate because it’s only been six years since Curb Your Enthusiasm took an indefinite hiatus in 2011, but just remember — kids who were born when the series first started in 2000 will soon graduate high school.
So would Curb Your Enthusiasm give into revival fever and do a soft reboot of the series, with an introductory season for all the new viewers? Judging by the Curb Your Enthusiasm season 9 trailer, nope. The promo emphasizes the fact that “nothing has changed” as it introduces the fictionalized antics of the famously cranky David, as he once again pisses everyone off and gets into pointless dilemmas. There’s an extended scene involving his colleague’s (played by Portlandia’s Carrie Brownstein) constipation, and Bryan Cranston — who appeared in Seinfeld — playing David’s therapist.
The trailer can be best summarized by the exchange between fan-favorite Richard Lewis, who returns to Curb as Larry’s #1 hater: “You’re devoid of anything that’s remotely caring or empathetic,” he tells Larry.
“That was a great compliment,” Larry responds with a smile.
It’s a big 180 from the last teaser trailer for Curb Your Enthusiasm, which introduced Larry as the comedy hero this era needs. Instead, it’s just Larry back to his old antics, virtually unchanged since the series went on hiatus. It’s a reliable formula for HBO’s longest-running comedy series, and seems like one they will be sticking to for the foreseeable future.
Curb Your Enthusiasm premieres on HBO on October 1.

Larry David is getting psychological help from… Walter White? Seems about right.
HBO on Sunday quietly dropped the first trailer for Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s long-delayed ninth season and the 90-second promo offers a first look at Bryan Cranston as Larry’s weary shrink. “I enjoy the mind of Larry David,” Cranston’s therapist (sarcastically) opines at one point.
The above clip, which warns early on that “Larry’s back… and nothing has changed,” offers a sneak peek at a selection of the grump’s Season 9 gripes. Among them: soap dispensers, constipation complainers, shoddy shoelaces, flagrant PDA, courtroom etiquette, funeral outbursts and department-store perfume sprayers.
Strangely, the trailer — which was first screened for critics over the summer at the Television Critics Association’s press tour — no longer offers a glimpse of special guest star Judge Judy. (In the version critics saw in July, Larry appears on Judge Judy accusing an old lady of trespassing and stealing his ficus plant.)
Curb Your Enthusiasm returns for Season 9 on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 10/9c on HBO.

Shelley Berman, who played Larry’s father, Nat, on Curb Your Enthusiasm, died Friday from complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 92.
A post on Berman’s official Facebook fan page announced his passing, adding, “He slipped away peacefully, in his sleep, with no pain, as far as his hospice care workers could tell.”
Berman was introduced as Curb‘s Nat in a Season 3 episode where Larry was incensed to learn his mother had died, but he hadn’t found out until days later. He reprised the role 12 more times over the following four seasons, earning an Emmy nomination for his part in Season 6’s “The Rat Dog” episode. His last Curb appearance aired in 2009; his only other on-camera TV work following that was a 2012 episode of Hawaii Five-0.
Previously, though, Berman’s TV resumé included roles on Boston Legal (where he played Judge Robert Sanders), CSI: NY, Pushing Daisies, Hannah Montana, Entourage, Grey’s Anatomy, Friends and L.A. Law.
According to the Facebook post, a public memorial for the actor will follow a private service for family and friends.

You should take everything you read in the IMDB trivia pages with a fistful of salt, but one piece of information has stuck with me in the decade or so since I first read it. Curb Your Enthusiasm saved a man’s life. Literally. Because this man was arrested for a murder he didn’t commit and was facing the death penalty and the only hope of clearing his name meant the producers of HBO’s comedy series finding him in b-roll footage they filmed at Dodger Stadium at the time of the crime. Now that’s trivia worth knowing.
And now, this trivia tidbit has become a new documentary called Long Shot, which is set to premiere at the Telluride Film Festival before making its way to Netflix next month.
Director Jacob LaMendola‘s short documentary tells the story of Juan Catalan, who was arrested and charged with murder in 2003. But his alibi – he was at a baseball game with his daughter – was looking shaky in the eyes of the law, especially when he could not be found in footage from the television broadcast of the game.
Enter comedian and actor Larry David, who was filming scenes for the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode “The Car Pool Lane” in Dodger Stadium that night.
The trailer essentially telegraphs what happens, but I’m fascinated to learn the full story. I especially look forward to hearing David’s take on the whole situation, since he remarked at the time “I tell people that I’ve now done one decent thing in my life, albeit inadvertently.”
I often joke about Netflix making its film buying decisions based entirely on algorithms, but Long Shot feels genetically engineered to appeal to the service. It’s a true crime story, slotting in right alongside Making a Murderer. It’s a Hollywood story, easing in next to Five Came Back. And it’s directly connected to one of the most successful comedians of all time, making it a bizarro companion piece to their ever-growing line-up of comedy specials and shows. Heck, why not make this a double feature with their new Jerry Seinfeld special?
Here’s the official synopsis for Long Shot:
Juan Catalan was arrested for a murder he didn’t commit. To save his life, all he had to do was prove he was one of 56,000 people at a Dodgers Game that night. That’s where Larry David comes in…
Long Shot will premiere at the Telluride Film Festival this week before arriving on Netflix on September 29, 2017.
