Square Enix will no longer offer three of its mobile games in Belgium after the country banned loot boxes this year. You’ll no longer be able to pick up Mobius Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts Union X or Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia in the nation.
The publisher said in a statement in the games it’s removing them because of “the present uncertain legal status of ‘loot boxes’ under Belgian law,” according to the Guardian. Back in April, Belgium’s gaming commission declared that loot boxes, which reward players with randomized in-game items, in some games broke gambling rules. The move has affected several titles, including Guild Wars 2, while the Netherlands has also banned them in certain games.
Some other countries and jurisdictions are considering steps to regulate loot boxes. While the UK has determined that they aren’t a type of gambling if players can’t sell the virtual items they receive for real money, it’s keeping tabs on the issue.
With that in mind, it’s worth considering how publishers might react if key markets such as the UK or the US banned loot boxes. While they might not completely remove titles that use them, they’d certainly have to retool their games, particularly if they adopt a free-to-play business model that relies on such microtransactions or include a pay-to-win aspect.

Square Enix’s mysterious Left Alive project has been pushed back from an ambiguous “2018” release date to February 28th, 2019 in Japan. The delay isn’t a huge surprise given how little we’ve seen of the game. Square Enix did, however, show a new cinematic trailer today during Sony’s pre-Tokyo Game Show event. Set in the fictional city of Nova Slava, it follows three characters as they try to endure a futuristic warzone filled with soldiers and mechs. The teaser had no gameplay (boo) but did show some impressive-looking robots sliding around. Which is no surprise, really, given the game’s director is Armored Core legend Toshifumi Nabeshima.

Square Enix news includes an Octopath Traveler stock update as well as the latest on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3.
Octopath Traveler released last month to critical and commercial success on the Nintendo Switch.
Express.co.uk gave Octopath Traveler a 4/5 rating and said it’s a “wonderful game with excellent characters, evocative music, an engaging battle system and a beautiful art style”.
The JRPG has been a huge hit for Square Enix so far, with physical copies selling out around the world fast.
In the UK physical copies of Octopath Traveler are like gold dust, while in Japan it has sold like hot cakes.

Kingdom Hearts 3 developer Square Enix has revealed more about the game’s run time.
A new report on Geek.com suggests that the upcoming Disney and Square adventure will be the biggest in the series yet.
The initial report claimed that Kingdom Hearts 3 would take players between 40-50 hours to complete.
Venturing off the beaten path and exploring the game’s secrets could potentially take that number up to 80 hours.
Square Enix has since downplayed the report, telling fans that an exact run time is yet to be finalised.
Either way, Kingdom Hearts 3 looks like it will be a big game with hours and hours of entertainment.
New Final Fantasy 7 Remake details may have been revealed as part of a recent job listing.
The description for the role describes the Final Fantasy 7 Remake as an “action game”.
The gameplay trailer for the FF7 Remake showed an old school combat menu system appear during certain scenes.
So it was thought that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake could feature a modern version of the turn-based combat featured in the original.
However, the new job description may indicate that the FF7 Remake will feature an action-orientated combat system similar to FF15.
FF7 Remake director Tetsuya Nomura previously spoke about the approach he is taking to developing the battle system for the upcoming PS4 game.
Nomura-san said: “Battles are not command-based, they’re action-based.”
Speaking about the game’s cover system, he added: “Regarding cover actions, there are places where they can be done on the map, but they are not required.
“Because it’s seamless, I showed that there can be actions in response to various scenes.”
Just Cause 4 developer Avalanche Studios has ruled out multiplayer for the upcoming release.
With a huge world to explore and lots of inventive ways to eliminate enemies, Just Cause 4 seems like a great fit for multiplayer.
But speaking exclusively to Express Online, executive producer Adam Davidson said that the studio was focus solely on perfecting the single-player campaign.
“This time around we’re focused entirely on putting an excellent single-player experience together, so as of right now we’re just focused on that,” he said.
Davidson said the studio would look at it in the future if there was enough demand, but there are no plans as of right now.
Just Cause 4 has a December 4 release date on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
The game is developed using the brand new Apex Engine, which will allow for a wider range of weather effects.
This includes tornados that tear through the world leaving a trail of destruction.
In many ways, Square Enix’ Go titles were textbook examples of how to make good mobile games: for a little cash up front, you’d receive a truly mobile-friendly experience that felt like it received just as much attention as a blockbuster console release. However, that strategy has apparently run out of steam. Square Enix Montreal head Patrick Naud told PCGamesInsider.biz in an interview that his studio has stopped working on the Go series. The premium mobile game market is “diminishing,” Naud said — there are too many genuinely high-quality free games for many people to pour money into games unless they’re riveted by the concept. While Hitman Go, Lara Croft Go and Deus Ex Go had strong reviews and “great revenue,” only a small number of people played them.
This doesn’t mean the Montreal outfit has given up on mobile games. However, Naud wanted the studio to push for more innovative experiences. If it worked on a familiar property, it would have to “somewhat reinvent” the game mechanics.
It’s not hard to see why Square Enix would back away from what seemed like a surefire recipe for success. When a free release like Fortnite provides a deep, polished experience and rakes in massive profits, it’s hard to justify charging money no matter how good the gameplay may be. Free-to-play gaming has evolved to the point where it’s frequently just as good as the paid games, and mobile developers might not have much choice but to adapt.

The Kingdom Hearts 3 release date is still not know, although fans are hoping for a big announcement soon.
Square Enix have teased in the past that they will be revealing some projects in the Spring, ahead of E3 2018.
And this could include the Kingdom Hearts launch, which is apparently scheduled for 2018.
The game has a ton of fans, including Spider-Man creative director, Bryan Intihar.
He was asked during a recent interview if Spider-Man would be featured in Kingdom Hearts, with Intihar responding with enthusiasm for the idea.
“That’d be awesome. They’ve got to start putting the Marvel worlds in there, right?” he told Game Informer.
“They’ve added the Pixar stuff, right, so we need Star Wars, we need Marvel… That’d be awesome to have Sora dressed as Spider-Man! That’d be great. That’d be awesome.”
For those fans interested in the idea, it has been confirmed that it is possible to feature Marvel characters in Kingdom Hearts.
However, that doesn’t mean we will see content from the Marvel and Star War universe appear in the final product.
Tai Yasue, co-director and game designer for Kingdom Hearts 3, had this to say on the two Disney properties:
“They’re all under consideration. Nothing’s off-limits, we’re considering all of the worlds.
“There are so many wonderful concepts. We’re happy about that, but at the same time it’s really tough to choose.
“For each world there has to be some meaning for it, in the plot; in Birth By Sleep, for instance, in the Cinderella scene, the characters learn something specific by relating to Cinderella.
“Also, gameplay-wise, is that world something that would make gameplay fun? There’s a lot I can’t say, but there’s so much to consider.”
When it comes to news regarding Square Enix’s other big game – Final Fantasy 7 Remake – it’s a bit more thin on the ground.
The latest update concerning the development of the game includes the Final Fantasy 7 Remake team hiring personnel to help boost the quality of the game.
Job listings have been found for level planners for the game, which are apparently being hired in a bid to meet fan expectation for the project.
It’s fair to say that there is a lot of hype surrounding FF7 on PS4, which was first revealed back in 2015.
“We’ve come to the conclusion that in order to meet fan expectations we must increase its quality another step higher,” reads the translated job statement.
“Therefore, in addition to the current members for the Final Fantasy VII Remake development, we must establish a core group that includes level planners, battle planners, designers, engineers, and various types of jobs to tackle on the production of the big title.”
The job will include brainstorming level designs for each location, although this isn’t apparently a bid by Square Enix to avoid a bottleneck when it comes to workload.
What we can take from this new announcement is that the full game is still a long way off from being released.
And while we may get an update on the project in 2018, it certainly doesn’t like it will be ready for launch.
There’s the chance that Square Enix will release the game in chapters, in a bid to avoid a long wait time for fans.
This could push forward the release date for the first part of the game, although fans will have to wait for an update from the publisher themselves to find out more.
Square Enix have plenty of new announcements in 2018 to talk about, although two long awaited projects top the list.
In a recent update, it was revealed that one of these is still looking to make improvements before its launch.

Kingdom Hearts 3 fans have been hoping for a release date announced this week, as part of the franchise’s anniversary.
This didn’t surface though, with March 28 passing by without any big news being released.
The series celebrated its 16th anniversary, after the original Kingdom Hearts made its debut on March 28, 2002.
It was recently suggested that the Kingdom Hearts 3 release date would be announced before E3 2018.
And whether we already know the release date or not, the game is likely to take centre stage at this year’s big LA gaming expo.
In fact, the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra plans to kick off its world tour in Los Angeles on June 9 – just days before the start of E3.
Kingdom Hearts 3 fans might also want to grab this month’s issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, with the highly anticipated title on the cover this month.
As part of the feature, game director Tetsuya Nomura reveals how Rapunzel’s hair can be used to aid traversal and combat.
That’s on top of new details about the Keyblade transformations in the Tangled world, not to mention Mirage Staff transformation.
Likewise, the Kingdom Hearts director talks about a boss fight against a Zurg-themed Heartless spaceship in the Toy Story world, and about the Gummi Ship.
The new and improved Gummi Ship features 360-degree movement, as well as brand new customisation elements.
In terms of development, Kingdom Hearts 3 is split into three parts, the first two of which are almost complete.
It’s believed that the company’s Osaka studio is working on the game, plus 100 people from Square’s Tokyo studio.
Mobile games like Nintendo’s Fire Emblem Heroes and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Brave Exvius aren’t pushing out updates as expected on iOS devices today. This is likely because Apple’s new App Store guidelines, which stipulates that developers must disclose the odds of getting certain items in loot boxes.
Apple’s updated guidelines say: “Apps offering ‘loot boxes’ or other mechanisms that provide randomized virtual items for purchase must disclose the odds of receiving each type of item to customers prior to purchase.” GamesBeat has reached out to Nintendo, Square Enix, and Apple for comments and will update this article when we hear back.
The key detail is that developers must detail the odds of each item. A post on the gaming industry forum ResetEra speculates that the games that aren’t updating are affected because they weren’t thorough enough in their disclosure. Only a handful of games seem to have paused updates, and titles like Blizzard’s Hearthstone aren’t affected. Android users have received the updates as expected.
Apple revamped its App Store guidelines in response to the ongoing debate about loot boxes. Many free-to-play games depend on these types of in-app purchases as a major part of their monetization strategy. But some have compared loot boxes to gambling, calling for more protection and transparency for players. Games are the biggest earners on mobile, raking in $ 48.3 billion of revenue last year out of the $ 58.6 billion spent on apps overall. And mobile games are slated to grow to $ 72.3 billion by 2020.
Players can pay real money for in-game currency or to purchase loot boxes directly. The haul is usually randomized, with special or rare items appearing infrequently. The App Store rule is aimed toward letting players know how likely they are to get certain items to make better purchasing decisions.

Here’s a game industry move you probably weren’t expecting: Sonic the Hedgehog co-designer Yuji Naka has joined Square Enix. He’ll continue to pursue game development, but he isn’t exactly dropping many hints as to what’s next. Naka wants to make an “enjoyable game,” which sounds like a good goal to shoot for. It’s not clear what will happen to his game studio, Prope, with the change in career path.
Whatever he does, Naka will bring a lot to the table. He started at Sega in 1983 and quickly developed a reputation for his programming skills, which proved instrumental to games like Sonic — the game’s signature loops and curves were the result of his work. He eventually became a producer who managed titles like Nights into Dreams and Phantasy Star Online. Naka left to form Prope in 2006 simply because he wanted to create his own games that weren’t Sonic-related. Prope’s titles weren’t as high-profile, of course, but they covered a wide range of platforms ranging from TV consoles to the 3DS and iOS devices.
Naka isn’t likely to have much direct hands-on time at Square Enix given his stature and the size of the company — this isn’t an indie outfit. However, it won’t be surprising if he leaves his mark on whatever his new project might be.

Square Enix have at least two games that fans are desperate to find out more about.
While the Kingdom Hearts 3 release date has been given a vague 2018 launch window, fans are still waiting to find out when it might drop.
And it’s the same case for the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is going to be a very big game when it launches.
The most recent update for the FF7 release on PS4 comes from a recent event held by Square Enix.
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is currently making an appearance at the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Exhibition.
Held from January 22 to February 28 in Tokyo, new image boards from the game are on display.
Some of which have made it online. And while not the best quality, they clearly show some of the progress being made by the development team.
These new Final Fantasy 7 Remake images show scenes from the Sector 5 Church from FF7.
There are also images of how some of the early rebel characters look in-game, or at least did at one point during development.
It follows recent rumours on how Square Enix plan to launch their new FF7 project.
It’s now been claimed the first episode of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be released in early 2019.
The alleged leaker said the first episode could even be released before 2019, and that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake would include a total of three episodes.
This is the same amount of PlayStation One discs the original Final Fantasy 7 game had to be divided across.
Square Enix have already said they would reveal release dates for some major upcoming games before E3 2018.
So a timeline for an announcement before June 2018, and then a release date in late 2018 or early 2019 does tally up.
However, as exciting as these rumours are, they should still be taken with a very big pinch of salt until Square Enix reveal their plans.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is another big Square Enix game that fans are hoping to see arrive in 2018.
While there have been rumours and retail leaks suggesting that the Kingdom Hearts series would finally return this year, there have also been a few recent hints from Square Enix themselves.
A new tweet from the official Square Enix US Twitter account highlighted the game as one which media publication Destructoid were looking forward to seeing in 2018.
The fact that Square Enix are willing to highlight this year as when Kingdom Hearts 3 will be released suggests that it’s a real possibility.
Unfortunately, that’s about as far as you can go with it, as it can’t really be seen as an official announcement, or endorsement.
“Dragon Quest! Kingdom Hearts! Check out @destructoid’s most anticipated games of 2018 and let us know what game you’re looking forward to,” the tweet reads.
Currently only confirmed for PS4 and Xbox One, the popular Square Enix project has seen a lot of delays in its development cycle.
The new launch window does put the Kingdom Hearts 3 release date during 2018, although fans are still waiting for a crucial update on what month it will arrive.
