  • Yellow vest protesters took to the streets across France on Saturday, in what quickly devolved into violent clashes with police.

For the fourth weekend in a row, yellow vest protesters took to the streets across France to demonstrate against President Emmanuel Macron, high taxes, and economic inequality.

The weekly protests have steadily grown more violent, and French officials said by the end of Saturday, dozens were injured and hundreds arrested.

Thousands of police officers were deployed to control the riots, eventually firing tear gas and rubber bullets, and repelling demonstrators with water cannons.

The so-called “Yellow Vest” movement was first sparked weeks ago, when protestors began demonstrating against a planned fuel tax increase.

Some people just seem to have an innate sense of calm, remaining totally cool whatever the circumstances. This guy chowing down while a bus is consumed by flames right beside him though really takes it to another level.

This incredible footage, recorded in a cafe in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk on Friday, shows a restaurant patron calmly enjoying his lunch as total carnage continues just outside the window. The diner nonchalantly eats his meal, barely taking a second glance at the inferno raging mere meters away.

And, incredibly, our unperturbed diner is not the only one totally unfazed by the blaze nearby. Two other patrons of the eatery casually walk past the camera with no appearance of urgency or alarm. The person filming the fiery scene is also clearly not too bothered.

Some Instagram users wondered if our unflappable diner was the driver of the bus, taking a break while his vehicle burned down. Others suggested he was just “warming up” the engine before returning to the flaming wreckage.

Multiple explosions have rocked an ammunition depot in Azerbaijan, where a fire broke out on Sunday morning. Evacuation of injured people from the scene is being hampered by the danger of the explosive materials.

A group of first responders is currently at the scene to ensure safety and investigate the causes of the fire, a statement by the country’s defense ministry said.

The Azeri national emergencies service said it sent several fire brigade units in response to the incident.

The authorities would not specify the location of the depot, but local media placed it in the Siazan District of north-eastern Azerbaijan.

Health officials said they had been informed about casualties of the incident, but could not risk sending ambulances closer to the scene due to the threat posed by the continuing explosions.

“Ten ambulances are currently directed to the blast area, however they cannot arrive at the incident cite due to additional explosions,” said Miralam Jalalov, who oversees the nation’s ambulance service, as cited by APA news agency. “Additional ambulances will be involved if needed.”

A motorway linking the Azeri capital Baku with Russia was shut off in the wake of the incident. Footage published by the news website oxu.az shows a road with cars passing by a massive column of smoke rising in the distance.

DUBAI (Reuters) – A fire ripped through one of the world’s tallest residential towers in Dubai on Friday, the latest in a series of fires in tall structures in the United Arab Emirates, the Gulf’s tourism and business hub, over the past three years.

Flames shot up the sides of the Torch tower in the second blaze to hit the high-rise since 2015, forcing hundreds of occupants to flee as burning debris showered down the sides of the 1,105 foot (337 meter)-tall, 79-storey structure.

“We were sleeping and we woke up to the fire alarm and people screaming. We ran down the stairs and it took us about 10 minutes to reach from the 50th floor,” a resident who gave his name as George told Reuters.

“It was very bad. The fire was very strong at that time, about 1 a.m. Then it started calming down over the next two hours,” he added.

The tower was evacuated, no injuries were reported, and there was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze.

But the incident may revive questions about the safety of materials used on the exteriors of tall buildings across the wealthy Gulf region and beyond.

An investigation by the management of the Torch after its 2015 fire found that most of the damage was to the cladding, exterior paneling used for decoration or insulation.

Dust, Debris

Police in Britain have said they believe the system of insulation and cladding panels added during a refurbishment of London’s Grenfell Tower may have contributed to the rapid spread of a fire there in June in which 80 people died.

The UAE revised its building safety code in 2013 to require cladding on all new buildings over 15 meters (50 feet) tall be fire-resistant, but older buildings are exempt.

Most of Dubai‘s approximately 250 high-rise buildings use cladding panels with thermoplastic cores, UAE media have reported. Panels can consist of plastic or polyurethane fillings sandwiched between aluminum sheets.

Such cladding is not necessarily hazardous, but it can be flammable under certain circumstances and, depending on a skyscraper’s design, may channel fires through windows into the interiors of buildings.

Dubai‘s civil defense authorities said firefighting squads put out the blaze around 4.00 am (0000 GMT) and were cooling the building.

Firefighters and police sealed off surrounding streets, which were partially covered by dust and debris.

By 4.00 a.m. the exterior of the building showed no sign of fire as residents and onlookers stood around staring up at the building, according to a Reuters witness.

Shelter

Another resident, whose gave his name as Mohammed and lives on the 12th floor, said the top part of the tower caught fire first and then lower levels followed as debris fell.

The government said it was working on providing shelter for those affected by the fire.

Dubai is one of seven emirates that make up the UAE, where several residential compounds and hotels have been hit by fire in recent years. In some of those cases, experts said the flames may have been encouraged to spread by exterior cladding.

In August 2016 a fire swept through a 28-storey building under construction in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, injuring 13 people, including 10 emergency service personnel.

Earlier that same month, a fire damaged part of a multi-storey building under construction inDubai and in July 2016 a fire broke out in Dubai‘s residential 75-storey Sulafa Tower. On New Year’s Eve 2015, a blaze hit a Dubai hotel.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is upgrading and expanding a probe into 1.33 million Ford Explorer SUVs over reports of exhaust odors in vehicle compartments and exposure to carbon monoxide that may be linked to crashes and injuries.

The auto safety agency said in a statement on Thursday it was aware of more than 2,700 complaints and three crashes that may be linked to exposure to carbon monoxide and 41 injuries among police and civilian vehicles in the probe covering 2011-2017 model year Ford Explorer sport utility vehicles.

Ford has issued multiple technical service bulletins related to the exhaust odor issue to address complaints from police fleets and other owners, NHTSA said.

Ford said in a statement a dedicated company team is working with police, NHTSA and others “to investigate reported issues and solve them.”

The probe was opened in 2016 into 638,000 vehicles and upgraded on Thursday to an engineering analysis, a step before the agency can formally demand an automaker conduct a recall if it believes vehicles pose an unreasonable risk to safety.

NHTSA said it “is actively working with law enforcement agencies that use these vehicles to determine if this issue is related to a potential safety defect.”

The agency said it had “no substantive data or actual evidence,” such as a blood test “supporting a claim that any of the alleged injury or crash allegations were the result of carbon monoxide poisoning.”

But NHTSA has obtained preliminary testing that suggests carbon monoxide levels may be elevated in certain driving scenarios, “although the significance and effect of those levels remains under evaluation.”

The agency said it was examining vehicles used by the Austin, Texas, police department and “using professional grade detectors to monitors carbon monoxide under different driving scenarios.”

KXAN-TV in Austin reported this month that Austin police had pulled 40 Explorers from service and more than a half dozen officers became ill after reporting exposure to carbon monoxide.

NHTSA has conducted field inspections of vehicles and crashes involving police units that occurred while the officers were on duty.

NHTSA also said it recently learned that the Police Interceptor version of the Ford Explorer was experiencing exhaust manifold cracks, “which appear to present a low level of detectability, and may explain the exhaust odor.”

The agency said the reported injuries include “loss of consciousness, with the majority indicating nausea, headaches, or light-headedness.”

Police have reported two crashes that may be linked to carbon monoxide exposure, including a rollover incident, and a third incident involving injuries related to carbon monoxide exposure.

A huge blaze, falling debris, and people reportedly still trapped inside – terrifying footage of the inferno at the massive block in West London has emerged online.

“The fire started happening on the third floor. We called the fire brigade. They came 20 minutes later. And then the whole thing just went off. An hour and a half later I saw a kid on the 22nd floor on fire. He went to the window and jumped,” Greg Stevens, an evacuee, told Ruptly news agency.

Another video featured a figure in a window of the burning Grenfell Tower in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Another evacuee, Daniel Williams, described how fire brigades were battling the blaze.

“They’ve come down, and they’ve tried to put the fire out but they weren’t reaching it… As the fire got higher, then they decided to use the ladders. But even then, the fire has just gone up. And now half of the building is gone,” he told Ruptly.

As of early Wednesday morning, the building is still engulfed in flames.

At least 45 fire engines and over 200 firefighters and officers have been deployed to the scene, the London Fire Brigade said.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses are working extremely hard in very difficult conditions to tackle this fire. This is a large and very serious incident and we have deployed numerous resources and specialist appliances,” Assistant Commissioner Dan Daly said.

The 54-year-old had another day out of the BBC studios to deliver the morning forecast at the picturesque site.

Wearing a chic navy blazer and floral blouse, Carol looked as stunning as ever as she was engulfed by tropical plants.

The weather presenter told viewers most of us today will have sunshine and showers.

At 9:00am in Scotland it will be a largely dry day, although there will be a few showers dotted around plus a little bit of cloud.

Northern England will see dry weather first thing this morning but Cumbria and Lancashire will have some showers.

In the Midlands it will be a chilly start, however temperatures will pick up quickly.

Down the east coast to East Anglia and Kent, there will be some cloud around with the odd spot of drizzle.

The west will see a lot of dry weather and sunshine but in the south west there will be one or two showers whereas Wales will remain largely dry.

Northern Ireland will also see a chilly start and through the course of the day showers will develop.

It will feel quite pleasant in the sunshine today with highs of 20 degrees celsius but tomorrow will begin with rain in the east counties. 

And viewers couldn’t help but comment on Carol’s appearance in the beautiful location as one person wrote: “@carolkirkwood Scotland’s best weather girl still looking good doll don’t know about this weather but hope it’s no raining lol xxxxxx.”

One view from Stephen’s room on the third deck showed the waves completely blacking out the windows as the side of the ship was submerged. 

The video has gone viral since it was shared online. 

It has been viewed more than 5.5 million times on YouTube, with hundreds of viewers sharing their own reactions. 

One viewer commented: “For the life of me how do you keep so calm? I’d be in serious panic mode.”

Others were more impressed, sharing: “Awesome video, amazing view!” and “What an incredible experience!”

One viewer had personal experience with the event, writing: “My wife and I were on that ship!!! It was crazy scary but I will definitely cruise again.”

Another viewer wrote: “I’m nearly having an anxiety attack just watching this, yet you’re all so calm.”

Royal Caribbean released a statement in February last year after the incident occurred.

The cruise line said it was “grateful for the safe return” of the guests and crew.

It added: “We apologise for exposing our guests and crew to the weather they faced, and for what they went through. 

“Our ship and our crew performed very well to keep everyone safe during severe weather. Of more than 6,000 people on board, only four minor injuries were reported.

“The severity of Sunday’s storm, with its 120-mph winds, far exceeded forecasts. Even so, it is our responsibility to eliminate every surprise we possibly can.”

An avalanche slammed a group of Japenese students on a school trip in north Tokyo on Monday, local media reported.

NHK reported that the students were on a mountain-climbing excursion when the avalanche engulfed a ski resort in the Tochigi prefecture. Six high school students were found with no vital signs and three others were injured.

Local authorities said about 70 people, including about 50 students and their teachers from seven high schools, were on the mountaineering trip.

Rescuers are combing the area for more injured or missing people.
