The buildup to Saturday’s match (Sunday AEDT), which sees defending Six Nations Grand Slam champions Ireland up against an improving England at the start of a year culminating with the World Cup in Japan, has been stoked by a series of pointed comments from both sides.
Former Ireland scrumhalf Stringer, who played alongside flyhalf Farrell at English giants Saracens in 2011, said that while the flyhalf was a fine player, “you can rattle him.”
The 98 times capped Irish rugby great’s remarks came on the back of England head coach Eddie Jones promising “brutality” from his side at the Aviva Stadium and his defence coach John Mitchell telling the BBC that Ireland will “try to bore” England to death.
Ireland are favourites to prevail having beaten England in their last two meetings and won 11 out of 12 Tests last year, including a historic home victory over world champions New Zealand.

— ‘Loses the rag completely’ —
“Eddie will have them fired up, and you see the likes of Owen Farrell: he’s in charge of everything they do, being captain and having all that responsibility, but he is a hothead,” commented 41-year-old Stringer, speaking at a sponsor’s event in Dublin.
“I’ve played with him, he loves that physical side of things, but you can get under his skin, you can rattle him.
“He is a guy they’ll be looking to get after.”
Stringer, who was no shrinking violet himself during a stellar career which included a 2009 Six Nations Grand Slam, said Farrell’s fragile temperament was a serious weakness in a captain.
“If things go well for Farrell, on the front foot he’s a great player but going backward he’s a guy who loses the rag completely, which you don’t want from your captain,” he explained.

Stringer, who formed a world class partnership with Munster teammate flyhalf Ronan O’Gara for the bulk of his career, said it was all very well to promise “brutality” but warned several other England players could be provoked into losing their cool.
“You can get under a lot of these guys, you can rattle them.
“Ireland’s discipline is very good, England’s not so much — they’ll be looking to start a scrap at every opportunity, just to rattle Ireland,” said Stringer.
“It’s going to be intriguing, and how Ireland deal with it will be fascinating, because that brutal nature England always bring will be heightened this year.
“They’ll be hurting, they won’t want to see Ireland doing well and going to the World Cup as favourites.”

Drugs such as cocaine and marijuana are commonly used by England’s top flight footballers amid claims that the FA does not take drug-testing seriously, according to an expert in researching the use of drugs in sport.
Professor Ivan Waddington, who works at the University of Chester, has spent decades analyzing the impact of drugs on sport. He says that the use of recreational substances is rampant among Premiership footballers, citing an anonymous survey conducted in 2005 with the Professional Footballer’s Association in which numerous players admitted to drug use.

This comes after recent reports in which an England international footballer was allegedly asked to leave a nightclub after being found to have taken cocaine at his club’s pre-Christmas night out. The FA have said that they are investigating the matter and have asked witnesses to step forward.
“The FA doesn’t take drugs testing as seriously as it ought to,” Waddington told The Independent.
“And I certainly don’t think the football clubs take drug testing seriously as seriously they ought to. And again, individual clubs will deny that.
“In both our studies the professional footballers told us that the use of recreational drugs is widespread. There can be no doubt about that.
“The recreational drugs which are most used are cocaine and marijuana. There’s no difficulty about picking up marijuana. The test is technically sound and there’s no difficulty about picking up cocaine.
“We know that large numbers of these players are using these drugs because they told us so why aren’t they being picked up?“

Maradona feeling ‘well’ after brief hospitalization for internal bleeding
UK Anti-Doping conducted almost 2,000 drug tests on Premier League footballers last year, with six players failing for various recreational drugs. Per their policy, the names of those who failed were not released.
Meanwhile, the FA insists that instances of players failing drug tests are rare and they maintain that anyone with information about a player violating their anti-doping laws should report it to the relevant authorities.

The rising number of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel has been declared a “major incident” by the UK home secretary, Sajid Javid. Javid also asked for an urgent call with his French counterpart to discuss the issue and appointed a gold commander to deal with the crisis. The Home Office said there was “concern that it is only a matter of time before people lose their lives.” At least 221 migrants have attempted to cross the Channel to the UK since the start of November. Campaigners and charities have warned about increasing desperation among those attempting the crossing.
]]>Meanwhile, one Super Lig side are hoping to capitalise on Mesut Ozil’s Turkish roots with the aim of luring him away from the Emirates.
All that and more in another edition of Rumour Mill!
BLUES CHASE SUPERSTAR DUO
Chelsea are holding talks with AC Milan and Juventus over Gonzalo Higuain while also chasing Lyon star Nabil Fekir.
According to The Sun, Higuain could join the Blues on loan in January with Alvaro Morata heading to the San Siro in a short-term swap deal.
The Argentine is currently on loan at Milan for the season, but with the Italians struggling to adhere to FFP rules, may offload him.
And with just 18 months left on Fekir’s current contract at Lyon, the Frenchman could be tempted to join the Blues — if the fee is right, of course.
OZIL WANTED IN AUDACIOUS MOVE FROM TURKISH SIDE
Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir are considering a shock move for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.
Real Madrid and Inter Milan have also been linked with the German playmaker but it’s Basaksehir that have emerged as surprise contenders for Ozil’s signature.
According to TeamTalk the club are hoping to capitalise on the Gunners ace’s Turkish roots with reports that Ozil would happily take up ano offer to leave Arsenal in January.
Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are also interested in signing the 30-year-old — but after being named captain this weekend, a move away could be unlikely.
THREE HUGE EURO HEAVYWEIGHTS EYE ENGLISH YOUNG GUN
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all keeping tabs on England star Jadon Sancho.
The Three Lions youngster is being chased by Europe’s top clubs after an astonishing season so far at Borussia Dortmund.
Sancho earned his first England cap this season as he continues to justify his move away from Manchester City in 2017.
The 18-year-old has scored seven times in 24 appearances for Dortmund this season to become one of the first names on the teamsheet.
And his form hasn’t gone unnoticed either as the likes of Real, Barca and Bayern are all lining up to make their move come January.
FRENCH CHAMPS ADD PL DUO TO GROWING WISHLIST
PSG have identified Merseyside pair Fabinho and Idrissa Gueye as potential January moves, according to French outlet L’Equipe.
With Adrien Rabiot expected to leave in January, the French champions are desperate to sign a holding midfielder and it’s understood the duo fit the bill.
Rather than let Rabiot go for free in the summer, the Parisian side want to cash in on him an dhave lined up several huge big-name signings.
Gueye and Fabinho are the latest names on PSG’s growing wishlist along with Southampton star Mario Lemina, Frenkie De Jong, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Diadie Samassekou.
CHERRIES PAIR ON THE WAY OUT
Bournemouth forwards Josh King and Callum Wilson could be snapped up in the January transfer window.
King will be on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s radar next month, after the Manchester United caretaker insisted he “will have an input” on transfers.
According to The Sun, Solskjaer is a massive fan of the fellow Norwegian — the pair worked together when hen the striker was coming up through the ranks at Old Trafford.
King isn’t the only man establishing himself on the South Coast, with Wilson’s recent form earning him an England call-up.
The Blues are said to be confident of securing a deal for the one cap, one goal, Three Lions star, with Sarri hoping Wilson can finally solve their striker struggles.
The French don’t like speaking in foreign languages, but the host of a popular comedy show remembered his English lessons and pulled no punches in the telling US President Donald Trump that he wasn’t welcome in Paris.
The ‘Quotidien’ (Daily) program aired on TMC channel ahead of Trump’s arrival to France for the Saturday’s 100th anniversary since the armistice of World War I.
The host, Yann Barthes, began his show in French, but then switched to English so that the US President, whom he claimed could’ve been among the viewers, would understand him.
“Hey, hello there! Welcome to TMC Channel. My name is… Sean,” Barthes said and then introduced all of his co-hosts using fake Americanized names like “Ashley,” “Clarissa” and “Hot Bunny.”
“We all work for the porn industry here in France. You came to the right place because we like your style from the beginning,” he said, with the remark followed by a montage of exclamations and other unintelligible noises taken from the Trump’s public speeches.
After that, Barthes instructed Trump on how to find Fox News on TV at his Paris hotel. But he then suddenly switched his tone, saying: “Oh, and one last thing. Go and f*** yourself. You’re not welcome in this country.” The crowd in the studio erupted in laughter and applause.

Leeds made only £7million in television income in 2017 when they pull in more viewers than many Premier League clubs who receive a minimum £100m-a-year and media mogul Radrizzani insists is demanding change.
And 10 years after the rebellion that almost brought down Premier League overlord Richard Scudamore, the Elland Road chief is preparing fresh mutiny.
He said: “We should concede that a club like Leeds United is watched by 500,000 to 600,000 people live on Sky, but getting only £2.5 million (of their TV deal with clubs).
“We are actually penalised because we are on TV more than 20 times, so maybe we should reconsider the system because it doesn’t work.
“We are creating a show that is high interest for everyone, yet we lose money.
“I think other chairmen would love to open a discussion because the time is getting ready to consider what to do to move forward.”
Asked if he had already held meetings with other club owners to plot a course for revolt, Radrizzani – owner of emerging TV rights contenders Eleven Sports – warned: “No, it’s just my belief, you should ask other clubs.
“But I’m sharing these (ideas) with other chairmen, and they agree.
“The Championship model should be reconsidered because it is not sustainable – there are huge gaps between the clubs coming down with parachute payments and other teams on lower budgets.
“Maybe they need to consider another way to create value, Premier League 2 or something, that is sustainable even for the clubs who are not promoted.”
Radrizzani, speaking at the Leaders Sport summit at Stamford Bridge, claimed Leeds United had doubled in market value since he paid £45 million to buy the club from excitable predecessor Massimo Cellino 17 months ago.
And he acclaimed the impact of new manager Marcelo Bielsa, whose charisma has given fans a standard-bearer to rally round the White Rose standard.
He said: “I think we have progressed in terms of everything – management,
facilities and the sporting side is doing better – so the big impression is that the club is catching up to be a modern club.
“Soon, if not this season then maybe next year, we will be ready to go in the right direction for promotion.
“After last year, I really wanted to have a manager to give us strong leadership, to be a catalyst for the whole club and the players.
“I thought we needed to change the culture of the entire club and very quickly he has achieved this objective, so I am very happy with that.”
Bielsa has presided over just one defeat in 12 League games, leaving Leeds just two points off the Championship peak.
According to ScreenDaily, the movie has opened with £8 million – of which £5.6 million was the Friday-Sunday weekend period, and the rest was previews on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Tom Hardy-fronted movie, based on a popular Marvel Comics favourite, had received cold reviews from critics, winning only a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
But it seems to have resonated much more with moviegoers: it has a B+ score from viewers on CinemaScore, and in the US it easily shattered Gravity’s record to earn the best October opening of all time.
For comparison, Spider-Man Homecoming – the title character of which shares a universe with Venom in the comics – opened to £9.4 million in 2017.
That movie went on to earn £30.7 million overall in the UK, and though it seems unlikely that Venom will go quite that high, bosses will no doubt be relieved that the negative buzz from critics didn’t affect ticket sales.
It was a tough marketplace this weekend, but Johnny English Strikes Again managed to beat A Star Is Born.
The third movie in the Rowan Atkinson-starring spy comedy opened to £4.1 million, over a million more than Bradley Cooper’s drama.
A Star Is Born, which also stars Lady Gaga, made £900,000 from previews as well, putting it overall at £4 million in this country so far – £100,000 behind Johnny English 3.
For comparison there, Johnny English’s first film opened with just £3.4 million back in 2003, while Johnny English Reborn in 2011 arrived to the tune of £5 million – so this latest instalment has arrived in between the two.
Despite coming third, though, forecasters expect A Star Is Born to have much longer legs and hang around in cinemas significantly longer than its rivals – particularly if the ongoing Oscars buzz is maintained.
Elsewhere, former number one The House With A Clock In Its Walls dipped to No4 in its third week on the market; earning another £902,203 to rack up a cumulative total of £6.8 million.
The Top 5 is completed by last week’s chart-topper Night School, dropping to £859,330 in its second week on release.
Hitting screens this coming weekend are Bad Times At The El Royale, an all-star thriller starring Jon Hamm and Dakota Johnson among others.
First Man, another Oscar-bait movie, is also out – with Ryan Gosling reuniting with the La La Land director to portray Neil Armstrong.
In more family-friendly viewing, high-profile animation Small Foot also lands on our shores on Friday.
Jenna Coleman is a famous English actress who has appeared in multiple top-rated TV shows including Doctor Who and Victoria – but how much do you know about the 32-year-old?
Jenna was born on April 27, 1986, and grew up in Blackpool. She attended theatre company Yer Space while she was at school.
Her first big role was Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale in 2005. However, she left the soap to play “hard girl” Lindsay James in Waterloo Road.
Jenna made her feature film debut in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011.
She then became the new assistant of the eleventh Doctor Who, played by Matt Smith, before leaving to take on the role of Victoria.
Thanks to her very successful career as an actor, Jenna has amassed a sizeable fortune.
According to CelebrityNetWorth, Jenna is worth $ 5million (£3.8 million).
Audiences can see Jenna tonight in her brand new BBC show The Cry which begins at 9pm on BBC One.
The Cry stars Jenna as Joanna, a mother caught in a media circus after her baby is abducted in Australia.
Alongside Coleman is a cast of actors from the UK and Australia.
Series executive producer Claire Mundell told media including Express.co.uk at an event: “I think we knew right from the beginning that we wanted Jenna to play the role.
“Whoever was going to play Joanna would be someone who could convey the complexity and the layers of emotion that that character has to experience and the journey that she has to go on.”
Jenna is currently dating British actor Tom Hughes, 32. They met on the set of Victoria, where they play on-screen couple Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Tom also played the lead in the 2014 BBC Cole War drama The Game, and has also starred in Agatha Christie’s Marple, ITV drama Trinity and BBC legal drama Silk.
Jenna previously dated Scottish actor Richard Madden, 32, who recently starred in police drama Bodyguard – coincidentally in the same TV slot as Jenna’s The Cry.
The Cry also stars Ewen Leslie, an Australian actor who has previously appeared in Top of the Lake and in The Cry director Glendyn Ivin’s last series Safe Harbour.
Ewen plays Joanna’s flinty partner Alistair, who is trying to fight to get one child back when he loses another.
Mundell said of Leslie: “We watched [his] previous show Safe Harbour and just we were blown away by it really… I think that was the easiest cast approval to get ever.”
Alistair’s ex-wife, Alexandra is played Asher Keddie – an Australian actor described by fellow cast member Stella Gonet as, “an absolute goddess,” who has previously appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as well as popular series in Australia like Offspring and Love My Way.
In the show, Alexandra is trying to raise her difficult daughter Chloe while dealing with her resentment over his infidelity with Joanna before their marriage broke down.

It was Louise Bennett’s first public performance. The 17-year-old recited one of her poems in patois, a radical act in mid-20th-century Jamaica, where a mastery of standard English was considered essential for social and economic advancement. For Bennett’s captivating performance that Christmas Day in 1936, Eric Coverley, 25, a well-known Jamaican actor and comedian, presented the student with a prize of two guineas. Ever the pragmatist, Bennett used the money to buy a pair of shoes.
Neither performer nor presenter could have foreseen that, 18 years later, they would marry — a union that lasted 48 years — and that Bennett would become an accomplished actor, a celebrated radio personality, “the first lady of Jamaican comedy,” an educator, folklorist and icon of Caribbean culture.
Louise Bennett-Coverley, affectionately known as Miss Lou, was, and remains, a forceful presence in Jamaican and Caribbean literature. Instead of writing in standard English, as was the custom, Miss Lou challenged the expectation that Caribbean authors should write in the language of their colonizers. By expressing herself in patois, Miss Lou unapologetically made her poetry, novels and plays into acts of subversion.
I believe in laughter.
Louise Bennett-Coverley, aka Miss Lou
Born in Kingston and educated at local schools. Miss Lou did not limit her boundary pushing to poetry and other writing. In 1945, she won a scholarship to study in London, becoming the first Black student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Within months of her arrival, she landed her own radio program on the BBC.
When she returned to Jamaica, she worked for the Social Welfare Commission and taught folklore and drama at the University of the West Indies before resuming her radio career. From 1965 until 1982, she hosted “Miss Lou’s Views,” a four-minute program of monologues that aired up to three times per week and made her one of the islands’ most prominent radio personalities. Her children’s television program Ring Ding, which ran from 1970 to 1982, made her the voice of a generation. In 1960, somewhat ironically for those familiar with her humorous but subversive work, Miss Lou was made a Member of the British Empire for her contributions to Jamaican theater and literature.
While Miss Lou enjoyed a long and varied career, the obstacles she overcame to achieve success were formidable. Jamaica in her era was not always a welcoming environment for those who embraced their Caribbean heritage, as European hegemony reigned supreme in all aspects of society. The Jamaican education system was deeply influenced by the English model and was initially designed to integrate formerly enslaved people into the empire.
Thus, education was mandated in English, and teachers had no patience for the use of patois. This attitude also prevailed in print media. The Gleaner, a popular Kingston-based newspaper founded in 1814, initially rejected Miss Lou’s patois poetry, although the editors eventually came round and published her work for the first time, in 1943, when the 24-year-old was studying Jamaican folklore at Friends College in Highgate, St. Mary. The newspaper later contracted her to contribute a regular column.
The disconnect between the formal English that Jamaicans were exposed to in media and literature and what they heard in their homes and in their communities stoked a growing appetite for authentic artistic representations of their lives and language. Miss Lou provided a provocative and often comedic bridge.
Fittingly, one of her best-known poems is “Colonization in Reverse,” a humorous meditation on Jamaicans’ mass immigration to England in the 1950s and ’60s.
By de hundred, by de tousan / From country and from town, / By de ship-load, by de plane load / Jamaica is Englan boun.
The poem, better consumed in spoken than written form, remains hugely popular among Jamaicans of all ages and backgrounds. Given that it’s taught in literature programs around the world, the title gains added meaning. While the Jamaican government may not be physically colonizing former colonizers, the fact that its literature is universally recognized and respected is a disparaging clapback to the empire. When Jamaican schoolchildren recite the poem, they are further embodying this clapback by demonstrating the education system’s rejection of standard English and European cultural dominance.
The literary movement Miss Lou launched has survived. In 2015, diGJamaica, the online edition of The Gleaner, published an article titled “5 Poets and Storytellers Carrying On Miss Lou’s Legacy,” which highlights artists who continue her tradition of patois and folklore. In 2017, more than a decade after her death in 2006, the Jamaica Observer called her the “mother of Jamaican culture.” The country’s love for Miss Lou runs so strong there’s even a Miss Lou bar in Montego Bay. Be it her effervescent personality — “I believe in laughter” was one of her favorite phrases — or her exceptional literary prowess, Miss Lou remains a poignant symbol of a decolonized Jamaica.
In the early 1980s, Eric Coverley and Miss Lou relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and then, in 1987, with Coverley’s health declining, to Toronto for its more affordable care. While she was sorry to leave her island home, Miss Lou saw Jamaica as more spiritual than physical: “Any which part mi live — Toronto-o! London-o! Florida-o! — a Jamaica mi deh!” (Wherever I live — Toronto, London, Florida — I am in Jamaica.)
