The largest offshore wind farm to date has officially opened off of the Cumbrian coast in the Irish Sea and it has the ability to power 590,000 homes. The 659-megawatt Walney Extension takes up an area roughly the size of 20,000 soccer pitches and is made of 87 wind turbines. “The UK is the global leader in offshore wind and Walney Extension showcases the industry’s incredible success story,” said Matthew Wright, the UK managing director at Ørsted, the Danish company that developed the wind farm. “The project, completed on time and within budget, also marks another important step towards Ørsted’s vision of a world that runs entirely on green energy.”

While Walney Extension may currently be the largest offshore wind farm in the world, it won’t be for long. A number of other larger projects are in the works including ScottishPower’s East Anglia One and Ørsted’s Hornsea Projects One and Two. East Anglia One and Hornsea Project One, which have capacities of 714 megawatts and 1,200 megawatts, respectively, are both scheduled to be operational in 2020. The 1,400-megawatt Hornsea Project Two is scheduled to be operational by 2022 and will be capable of powering 1.8 million homes.

The sound of silence isn’t easy to find, but city-dweller Richard Mellor heads to England’s supposed most tranquil spot for a dose of wilderness. Is it really as quiet as they say?

I sit beside Channelbush Sike, a boulder-strewn stream of transparent water, and listen. The current rushes down a couple of chutes. A bee buzzes by; a cuckoo cuckoos. Every so often, I think I hear a car approaching along the track—but it’s just wind sighing through surrounding forest. Other than that? Nope. Nothing.

And that was my hope in visiting this remote corner of Northumberland, found just inside the Cumbrian border and less than 10 miles from Scotland. It’s known as the Kielder Mires (or the Border Mires) thanks to around 60 peat bogs—which store precious amounts of carbon, thus negating the effect of global warming—speckling the boundaries of Kielder Forest.

And one particular 500-meter-by-500-meter-square of one particular Mire (its precise location a secret but somewhere nearby) was specified as Britain’s most peaceful spot in 2006 when the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) produced a ‘tranquillity map’ of the country.

All of which led me to think I desperately needed some quietude. So, reinterpreting the CPRE’s tranquility map as a treasure map, I decided to make for Northumberland. Rather than aiming for a beach or museum, I was traveling specifically to seek wilderness. The nearest rentable cottage to many of the Mires was The Bothy, a spacious, cosy affair inside the three-building Churnsike Lodge, where Victorian grouse hunters have been replaced by ultra-friendly couple, Dawn and Stephen, plus Stephen’s mum, a dog, a cat, some hens and the odd red squirrel.

I took the train to Newcastle, then the charming Tyne Valley line—the narrowing waterway to one side, remnants of Hadrian’s Wall on the other—on to Haltwhistle. From here, a pre-booked taxi ferried me north along single roads. We crossed RAF Spadeadam, Europe’s largest Electronic Warfare practice range and the place where Blue Streak missiles were assembled. Targets, including a mimic Middle Eastern hamlet, littered the hillside. Then past farms, conifer thickets and thrillingly desolate moorland. “I’ve never been this far up,” said the local cabbie.

There are areas which have recently been ‘cleared’ by the Forestry Commission, a mass of shocked, depilated plains of cleaved trunks and fallen branches. The sense is of an atrocity having recently been committed. Walking across one such, I hear weird drumming noises and encounter mini-gusts of wind. The stillness suddenly feels eerie, and I want to make a phone call, to hear another voice. Too bad: There’s no phone signal for miles.

Mostly, though, I smile. The views are often wonderful—as far as the Lake District while atop White Preston, and to the North Sea from Stripe Sike quarry—and the air blissfully fresh. Instead of London Underground fumes, I smell perfumed pines; instead of car alarms, I hear the prissy calls of a buzzard whose hunting has been interrupted. She swoops off in front of me, maroon-colored and mightily big. I turn in at 10pm after admiring star-filled skies—this is part of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park—and sleep unusually deeply, feeling faintly primal.

When my three days conclude, I feel energetic and brimming with ideas. On the train home, phone-shouting passengers annoy me less, and simple kindnesses—a door held open, a bag brought down—delight me more. It’s as if I have been recharged, or even restored. Bring it on, London.

LONDON — As expected, the Bank of England left interest rates on hold on Thursday, but signalled — in the eyes of most commentators and many in the markets — that a rate hike at the next meeting of its MPC is all but guaranteed.

After hiking rates for the first time since the financial crisis last November,  the bank spent much of the rest of the year signalling that it will likely raise rates further in 2018.

It’s a super slow ball, sometimes clocked at below 70 kilometres an hour, that captain Heather Knight describes as “probably the most effective ball I’ve seen in world cricket.”

The whiff comes in so slow that opposing batters find it difficult to hit with any power.

It was a handy weapon during England’s run toward its World Cup victory and it proved useful in England’s win during the third ODI on Sunday that saved the visitors from an early Ashes demise.

Having set an imposing target of 285 in that match, and with Australia tracking well at the start of the second innings, it was Gunn’s whiff that helped slow the Aussie run rate and increase their desperation for boundaries.

And, it claimed Australia number six Alex Blackwell, who was caught on 37 after she skied an attempted pull shot to the deep off the delivery and picked out the safe hands of Natalie Sciver.

Despite all that, Knight said Gunn would prefer to use other methods when she’s bowling.

“She (Gunn) doesn’t like saying she’s made a career out of it but she has, she’s been brilliant,” the captain said.

“She hates bowling it but it’s the most effective ball on big boundaries, and as the wicket got slightly slower towards the end.”

Australia’s Alyssa Healy has enjoyed facing the new ball this series where there’s plenty of pace for her to use, unlike her teammates lower down the order.

The wicketkeeper said after the third One Day International that overcoming the effectiveness of the whiff is something her team simply has to do.

“For us, especially heading in to the T20s at the back end of the series it’s going to be important for us to look at that and look at ways that we’re going to be able to score and combat that,” Healy said.

“Jenny Gunn has done that pretty successfully in the last 12-18 months.

“We’ll just sit back, watch a bit of footage and work out a plan as to how we can combat that and still score quite freely.”

ENGLAND match-winner Dawid Malan said Australia’s Adam Voges gave him the hope of making an international debut he thought would never come.

Malan marked his first senior England appearance with a superb 78 off just 44 balls in a 19-run victory over South Africa in Cardiff on Sunday that sealed a 2-1 Twenty20 series win.

It was the highest score made by an England Twenty20 debutant and helped justify regular captain Eoin Morgan’s decision to drop himself in favour of his fellow Middlesex left-hander.

But it was a conversation with another Middlesex batsman in Voges, who didn’t makes his Test debut until he was 35, which helped persuade Malan, who turns 30 in September, that he would get a chance to play international cricket.

“I didn’t think this day would come,” Malan said after a man-of-the-match display at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens.

“I actually had a chat about two-and-a-half months ago with Adam after the North v South (domestic) games which I contributed really well to.

“Then they (England) rested a few players for the Ireland matches.

“I spoke to Adam and said ‘Look, I don’t know what else I can do. I can only score so many runs in the games that I’m given’.

“He gave me a few tips as he was in the same position with regards to Test cricket in Australia.

“He was a late bloomer so he told me what he did. Fortunately I was given another chance and I took it,” added Malan, who on Sunday struck 12 fours and two sixes – the first off just his second ball in senior international cricket.

“You probably have your best years from 28 to 32 as a batsman,” explained Malan.

“You start knowing your game, what your strengths and weaknesses are.

“So hopefully my best years are still ahead of me and I can get a few more opportunities to push for a regular place,” said Malan, who stressed that playing Test cricket was “still my ambition”.
